Unable to Edit/Save APN - myTouch 3G, Magic General

In my Rogers HTC magic, Edit/Create/Save APN doesn't work. Every time I try anyone of this APN list goes empty or doesn't save the changes.
Does anyone have similar issue?
I did try couple of ROM's and it's the same.

Am I having an unique HTC Magic!!!
Is editing APN via adb the only alternative?

i have a backup of my apn by adb
adb pull /system/etc/apns-conf.xml D:\android\APN\
then you can open it in notepad
when i flash new rom i use
adb push D:\android\APN\apns-conf.xml /system/etc/
BUT then when i get to google log in i go to apn settings and its blank
just press menu and select RESTORE DEFAULTS and hey presto its there
hope this is what you are looking for if not....

Backup and restore sms [.apk request] [SOLVED]

Hi!
I need to do a factory reset on my Hero, because it has lost the association with my gmail-account. And this is the only way according to the HTC support. But before i do that, I would like to backup my sms messages to my sdcard and later be able to restore them into the phone.
Now here is the problem: Since my Hero's connection with the gmail account is lost, I can't even get into market. So I was wondering if someone could be kind to post an apk-file for a program that can do this (both backup and restore, e.g. "SMS Backup & Restore" v 1.7). It's a free app, but I cannot get into market at all...
I think that if you have the program installed, there are apps that can backup the apk-file to your sdcard.
Thanks in advice!
All you have to do is hook the phone to a computer & do the following commands:
Code:
adb remount
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db mmssms.db
This will pull the SMS database file to your computer.
Once you want to put the SMS back all you have to do is.
Code:
adb remount
adb push mmssms.db /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
Yeah, but that requires root, doesn't it?
I already fixed the app from a friend though, so problem solved.
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Google Apps > Clear Data
Then go into the market. I'm pretty sure that will re-associate your phone with your Gmail.

Can some on please help me with my motorola droid flashed on metropcs 2.1android root

I have a motorola droid that already been flashed too metropcs but the enternet & my picture messaging don't work any more on my motorola droid rooted 2.1 android they all was working earlier today i deleted a file in my sd memory card by accident an it reeboted my phone and took of my enternet an picture messaging settings by mistake i had too look for a wi-fi connection to sign in to use my phone again over the wifi connection but the phone still can make calls an regular text but no more mms messaging or internet any more if you can help me to put it back on send me a message on here
hey if you get info can you please help me out
I don't know any specific info related to MetroPCS, but I had a similar situation a while back. I would re-flash the stock ROM that came with your phone and start from scratch with whatever process you followed before.
I seriously doubt that the file you accidentally deleted is the source of this problem, but I would start from scratch either way.

Stable ROM w/Backup Assistant?

Are there any stable ROMs that have Backup Assistant? My son just bought a Droid X and I rooted it for him. I have an Incredible and it seems like I have so many more choices as far as ROMs go. I put a couple ROMs on his X but they both had Backup Assistant removed and he really needs to have it.
I'm not sure of any of the ROM's currently that have Backup Assistant still in it. I think most of the ROM's have taken out all/most of the Moto Blur features and a lot of the "bloatware" that verizon throws on their phones. MY guess would be that most devs are pulling this out of the phone. If you really want to add it back in, I would try this...I have never had to do this for Backup Assistant, but I have manually added Facebook back in like this...
NOTE: If you have the phone rooted, I would make sure that you have koush's bootstrap installed and make a backup of the phone in its current state in case something goes wrong. Then you have a backup you can restore.
The usual...I take no responsibility if your phone gets messed up from following this...
Open a command prompt with the phone attached using Charge only USB mode.
Type the following commands:
1) type: adb shell (press enter)
2) tyep: su (press enter)
3) type: mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
You will need the android sdk installed, and open up ANOTHER command prompt to the sdk/tools/ folder. Paste the attached .apk and .odex files for backup assistant in the tools folder. You will need to rename the .odex.zip file to just .odex
make sure that ithe phone recognized by adb (at command prompt, type adb devices)
From command prompt at C:\<sdk location\tools\
1)type: adb push BackupAssistanceClient.apk /system/app
2)type: adb push BackupAssistanceClient.odex /system/app
switch back to the first command prompt where you typed adb shell (MAKE SURE NONE OF THIS IS MISPELLED! the slightest error can brick a phone!
1) type: cd /system/app
2) type: chmod 644 BackupAssistanceClient.apk
3) type: chmod 644 BackupAssitanceClient.odex
4) Type: exit
you may need to type exit one more time, but make sure it returns you to a normal command prompt. Then type adb remount
This will remount the /system portion of the phone back to the normal read-only state.
Then you will need to reboot the phone. When it loads up, this should have the app reloaded for you to use.

Either they do not know how to do this, or they don't want their contacts with Google
I would suggest syncing with Google over using the Backup Assistant
Log into the Backup Assistant web site
Somewhere you will find export contacts
Export as a csv file
Log into GMail
Go to Contacts
Click import
Find your downloaded csv file
Import
Run the merge and clean option
And you are done
I BELIEVE Apex still has Backup Assistant, not 100% sure though as I've been running GummyJAR for a while now:
http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...id-x-running-running-fast-can-12-16-10-a.html
Honestly if you just want to be able to keep track of your contacts, I would just back them up to the SD card, load up a different ROM (my personal favorite after having tried them all is GummyJAR at the moment), load the saved contact list then make sure your Google account is backing them up. It's what I do and I prefer it over relying on Verizon's software.
Yeah gmail.contact sync is super easy... but apex has backup assistant on it still, fyi
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
My favorite would be chevyno1's SSX 1.1 at the moment.

Yeah ApeX is definitely the way to go !! and it indeed does have Backup assist.

To the OP, this is what I would suggest. Gmail backup is much easier. Once you log in to the phone with your Gmail account, your contacts will automatically come up.
Yes I would suggest Gmail contacts as well. I ROM all the time and my contacts always get sync'd to my phone as soon as I add my Gmail. Once I add my FB it also syncs with their profiles and adds/updates pictures.

[HOW TO] enable non market apps

I don't know about you, but SuperOneClick's Allow Non Market Apps feature didn't work for me. When I went to setting>applications there was no check box for Unknown sources present. I got it by using Root Explorer and SQLight Editor (both on the market)
1. Use "RootExplorer" take you to
/data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db/settings
2. click on the "Value" colum of "force_only_market_apps"
3. Press "menu" button and select "Edit Field"
4. Change "1" to "0", then save.
Without even doing a factory reset or just a regular reboot you should have an unknown sources box available in your settings>applications.
That's not how it works. When you use the option in SuperOneClick, it enables that option for you, even if it doesn't show up in settings>applications.
Thanks. When using SuperOneClick I was able to root, but I wan't able to allow Unknown Sources through Settings->Applications.
Now it works!
thanks, sideloading didnt work for me using aroot.
i rooted using SOC a while ago, and DLed the official PSN apk yesterday since it's not on the US market, and installed it by clicking the apk in file manager with no problem.
Thank you so much! This finally worked! Using aRoot/GladEnable/SuperOneClick , all of them SAID it was enabled but it clearly wasn't ... when I navigated to the db field it was still at '1' .. thanks for this, finally it's working
i am on gingerblur, and when clicking the menu button i don't get a dialog to do anything. Maybe a bug of the theme?
So i can't use root explorer to do this, but anyway this is useful since now i know the database name and can do it by hand...
For those that want to do this by hand:
-connect your phone via usb, enable usb debugging
-from a command line, go where you have adb installed (android sdk or many scripts on this forum)
-run adb shell, then su. accept the message on the phone if prompted.
-type: sqlite3 /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "UPDATE settings SET value=0 WHERE name='force_only_market_apps';" then enter, and you are done

I tried this and it did not work just said sqlite3 not found. Type exit and type exit then type sqlite3 /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "UPDATE settings SET value=0 WHERE name='force_only_market_apps';" it just locked up terminal. If I type sqlite3 before adb shell it finds it.
Used root explorer and copied settings.db to sdcard. Once there used as a disk drive on computer. Edited it with navcat for sqlite and saved it. Then disconnected it for computer used root explorer and copied it back to data and overwrote existing file. Rebooted and all was fine.
I did everything, but I am not able to edit the field...
"Thanks

Thanks for this instruction...
Even though this thread is a little old it did help me and therefore want to add my two cents worth to possible help others who may be having issues. I have a rooted Motorola Flipside.
I purchased SQL Lite Editor from the market and was able to change the value directly in it. Here's how:
1. Download and install SQL Lite Editor from the market.
2. Start SQL Lite Editor to display a list of the applications installed on your device.
3. Look for the application titled Settings Storage (and in smaller print underneath it will display "com.motorola.android.providers.settings".
4. Select Settings.db.
5. Select Settings.
6. In the list of columns scroll down to item #70, "force_only_market_apps" and select it.
7. Click the shortcut menu on your device and select Edit Record.
8. Change the value from 1 to 0 then save and exit SQL Lite Editor.
9. Go to Settings > Applications. Unknown Sources will be visible and you will be able to check it.
Hope this helps anyone else who has issues.
Regards,
Greg

Titanium Backup Restore Fingerprint issues

So on my old phone i had a fingerprint lock set. I got my replacement phone back to today and restored it.
After I restored the new phone phone it asks for a pin number. I unlock with the pin from the old phone but when I go to re enable the fingerprint it flashing the fingerprint/pin screen then returns to settings.
Anyone else have this happen?

Try wiping all prints then redoing it.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?
This is something I have just ran into after swapping what I think was a bit of a lemon Atrix for a new one; I did a quick Titanium Backup prior to the swap, went about restoring everything, and now I cannot enter the "Change Screen Lock" section of Settings, nor can I "Clear stored fingerprints" as that option isn't allowed.
My thanks for any advice or help that anyone can offer. I'd prefer not to resort to a Factory Reset; after all, I just got things up and running again, and I have no idea if that would even help anything.
Thank you,

You probably will have to and then not restore your settings. For future before you swap out your device due to a glitch remove the security. Also I would recommend submitting a bug report to the developer.
I also have the exact same problem. Has anyone found a solution to this issue?
I had this same problem. To fix I had to flash SBF. Don't think there is a way to fix it once you've restored it. Make sure when you make a new back-up before you flash that you remove security or not back it up. In this instance, since you can't disable it, you'll have to remove it from back-up.
Yeah I had the same issue. when TiBu backed up my stuff it backed up even sys files and settings messing a lot of things up, forcing me to flash 4.1.26 and start over. So what I had to do is manually pick what TiBu backs up and leave sys settings and files out.
