Very easy.
Just install a Pocket PC Video Converter application onto your PC such as, Apex Free Pocket PC Video Converter.
Then use this application to transform or convert all video files to PDA playable format.
Of course, afterwards, you need to copy the outcome to PDA to play..

the best tool for converting video is Spb Mobile DVD it has very good converting profiles and for tcpmp also and you can decide if you want to cut 16:9 or 4:3 but its not for free. you should buy it or use google to gain it, maybe you get it..
the video size decrease to ~270mb for 1 hour movie

Look into some free alternatives that will transcode videos. Try Super, MediaCoder, or PocketDivXEncoder.

Here's what i do
I use DVDshrink (freeware) to rip the main bits off a dvd to my hard drive
I then use AutoGordianKnot (AutoGK) Freeware to convert the dvd rip into an avi and play it using TCMP or coreplayer.
I've ripped Monsters Inc entire movie into 400k and it's perfectly watchable!

400k!!!! That's some SERIOUS compression. I'll have to blow the dust off my old 3.5" floppy disk drive and start using it for movie storage. Are you sure it wasn't 400MB? That'd be typical of high quality Xvid, Divx or WMV compression at or lower than 640x480.

I have a few 700mb movies on my computer and I want them on my ppc, but they are too big. So if you could post here how did you do this, then I will be vey happy!!!

I'm very interested in bying this HTC Touch, basicaly for it portability but i'm very concerned about it CPU and general perfomance.
I now have the HTC 3600 and i'm very happy with it's perfomance. My usage is normal, not many programs at the same time but i like to see some movies some times and i'll like to use TomTom via bluetooth if i bye the touch.
What do you think? Am i get perfomance issues with tomtom or to see some movies?

matumartin14 - I've had very good results using pocketdivxencoder (0.3.96). I've converted several DVD's (VOBs), divx movies and divx tv shows for use on my Elfin. I have a lot of experience using old school tools, but pocketdivxencoder does everything I need fast and painlessly. I can whip up a short guide if you like.
Hugo RSF - I've actually been fairly impressed with the video performance of the Elfin. For years I used a Dell X5 basic which has a 300MHz Xscale (overclockable to 400MHz) and I've notice no loss of performance with my 201 MHz OMAP, other than the smaller screen (2.8" vs 4.0").
I've used an external GPS with my Elfin on several occasions (using Nav4all), but never TomTom so I couldn't comment on that.
Prism Video Encoder also works well. Basically convert anything to anything and wickedly simple to use. Usually convert to MP4 and Elf plays them in good quality no problem at all.

If I have a 700mb movie and i convert it, then how small would it be??? MB???
Depends on the quality of the video and audio that you can live with. A full length movie can be compressed down to around 165 MB and still be fairly watchable if your hurting for space. I'm pretty picky about quality and shoot for around 250 to 350 MB for a full length movie.
I'm in the process of converting X-Files episodes and so far they are ending up around 110 MB in size (approx. 45 min each).
You can get much better compression with MP4 (h.264), but from what I can tell, the Elfin is too slow to decode h.264 without dropping frames. My h.264 testing was done using streams created by RipBot and meGUI.
As far as a conversion guide, should I start a new thread or just post one here?

I've purchased DVDs (strictly legal) and want to view them on my Touch - but can't with this software. I have a package to convert DVD to iPod format, but the playback on the Touch is jerky.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

TheNorm - Your correct in that PocketDivxEncoder cannot convert directly from an encrypted DVD. You would require a separate tool to first 'rip' the DVD to your HD. (DVDFab HD Decrypter is the best by the way, www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/225/59/). Also if you happen to own DVDFab HD Decrypter Platinum, it will do DVD to Divx all in one step.
As far as your iPod tool, it is converting your DVDs to MP4 (AVC/H.264). Although CorePlayer can handle H.264 videos, the Elf/Elfin OMAP 850 can't quite decode videos in the format fast enough. If you disable the AVC deblocking filter in CorePlayer, you will get better performance at the loss of quality which may help the jerkiness.
Menu/Tools/Preferences/Advanced/Disable AVC deblocking filter
Also ensure you are using 'Raw FrameBuffer' under the Video settings. This is all assuming your using CorePlayer. AVC deblocking can not be disabled in TCPMP.
I've searched but came up blank. Does anyone have an optimal setting to rip video for playback on the Advantage? I've tried a few settings and some didn't work at all, some playback with a stutter. I thought I'd see if anyone here has discovered a best setting.
I'm trying to play them back on pocket player or tcmp.
I'm using CorePlayer (it appears that it's actually using the ATI Imageon for hardware video acceleration) and am getting great results (smooth playback, almost no frames dropped) with H.264 at 25 or 29 FPS with 320x240 resolution, but TCPMP seems to play the files well too.
as most people here, i use Core player or TCPMP, depeniding on the ROM i'm using at the time.
But most common one i use is coreplayer 1.21.
DivX or Xvid encoding at between 600 & 750 kbps for the video, 128kbps aac or MP3 for the sound.
-0.200 delay on the audio in coreplayer/TCPMP and they are as smooth as butter.
Pisses the ipod touch owners at work off something rotten when they see the video on my athena!!
I use Pocket DVD for PPC & Palm at these settings:
Audio: 24 kbps, 22 KHz, Mono
Video: 512 kbps, 24 fps, 464X288
Never had any problem in any of my devices.

using mono audio would really lose the 3d effect on movies, which imho is what most people want/expect nowadays. this is really a big plus on action movies.

For me, anytime it is coreplayer now. It lets you search and play youtube in very high quality without lag. Not to mention that it is also visually a lot more appealing.
Thanks for the reply eaglesteve. So why are there so many die hard TCPMP fans (I myself up until now)? Are there any advantages "at this point" that TCPMP have over its successor Core?

May be because one is free and the other is not.
Makes since. I guess when I became a fan, it was when Core was just released. Folks over at the Aximsite.com at the time explained that there were advantages that TCPMP had because it was still beta, "free", was able to add plugins, things that I was told Core didnt have on its first lauch.
I guess I never kept up with the improvement over the time.
BTW....thanks for your input. Last night I purchased Core....I'm excited to use later today. Would it be wise to get the Core Pro for desktop? I have been using the DVD Decrypt and AutoGK for my video conversions.
I currently use Nero recode for mp4 which is very good in my opinion plus the video qualityis great, but need one that can handle HD rips, any pointers will be appreciated.
Try mediacoder its open source and its free, very powerful tool to convert videos.
Not sure if SUPER does mkv, but it's free and has loads of options.
Thanks have tried mediacoder but keep getting no output file error, ve played around some with no success...

What am I doing wrong in Winmenc, every time I encode something using either xvid or x264...and i copy over to the desire when i explore using astro, i cant find the files...

I tried Winmenc today and it didn't fly for me either. 1st-pass runs fine but 2nd pass immediately renders a 0-bytes file. It's the same with single pass encoding. Perhaps we are missing some obligatory codecs for this program to function properly.

Thanks for this will give it a shot, but 2000kbps is a lot of bit rate and lot of memory card space, i will edit the settings and reduce the bit rate to around 750 for the video and bout 96 for audio..
I just use Handbrake.
800 x 480, 1500kbps data rate, 128 audio at 48khz
are you able to save a profile out.. haven't used HANDBAKE before so being a little lazy

I also like Format Factory. But Desire doesn't play video as nice as HD2 does...
Hope a real good player will come out soon...
Have you tried mvideoplayer off the market, runs nicely.
Yes, I have now. It does work ok, but still seems that HD2 perform better.

Super simple totally worth it. Otherwise I just used handbreak which I still do for larger files which I want to tweak more. Miro Video Converter is soooo easy though and nice if you just want to drag and drop a file to get what you need.
Sadly I cant post a link yet since I'm a "new" user, though I've looked at this site for years. Wonder how long it'll take to be verified?

wow that does look really good, it even has a Nexus One profile which should work perfectly!

edit: tried it and dont like it. It gives you no control over bit rate/quality and as such transcoding a large file ends up in a file almost the same size.

Hi thanks for the .ini, I changed the bitrate to 1000, framerate to original and the audio bitrate to 160. looks nice. I am going to play around with the video bit rate and see how low I can take it.
What is interesting is that the Desire will play these x264 encodes but not my handbrake x264 encodes, wonder what I am doing wrong.....

I have been messing about with different settings and think i have found the solution to perfect video convertions but some other fault always appears.

I've got my DHD today. I'm familiar with Android as I have used Leo and Desire with same OS. Now I really like the screen on DHD! I want to convert movies and other epic movies/clips I have on my PC. Last year I've ripped all my DVDs to my external hardrive.
Which settings and converter program is best?
Size is not a big deal, 32GB here, quality matters
I'm on costum ROM, overclocked to 1,5GHz. Just so make clear I won't have any issues with playback for lager file sizes. I remember I had this on my Leo while I was on WINMO. :/

Haha same. The HD2 was the only WinMo phone I actually enjoyed using! Hmmmm well you can convert videos in either 800x480 or 720p, as the Desire HD can playback both. However our phone has a screen res of 800x480, so best to go with the native res. Anyways, for high quality, I always use MP4 video format. Codec, Mp4 or h264. Bitrate, CBR. Approx. 1500kbps. Sound, 128-320kbps. You can also crop video to remove black bars, that's your choice. My arsenal of video converters includes: Pinnacle Studio, AVS, and most of the time DVDPean and Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate. Hope I helped
Note, too high values for audio and video bitrate can cause your device to lag. Keeping your phone OC'd above 1.22ghz while watching a video for 1hr plus may severely overheat your phone.

It looks a little silly, and nags you everytime you exit, but it makes beautiful movies at native res (800x480) from just about any format (avi,mp4,mkv,mov,wmv). It's also a bit slow, due to only using 1 core (I got 8 on i7).
All converted movies can play in the default player, with hardware decoding of course.
The settings I use is the preset for HTC Desire, Nexus One. Havent had to try any other formats.

I play games on my phone @ 1,5Ghz Or, I did on my Leo. It did get pretty hot(!) but never caused a damage. So I think it will be safe Atleast, I hope so

I still play GTA IV, have done that for 3 years now. And there is a few pro players left. But it is like, everyone knows everybody. I also do have CoD BO, but not fun as GTA IV. Sub for more vids
DHD native player doesn't play flv format. Unconverted 700Mb video doesn't play smoothly on my DHD. It seems to lag badly.
I have no problems playing video's on my DHD.
It's still stock and i use Rockplayer to play video's.
I download a TV-show from the internets and i put it on my phone and it plays almost without lag.
Okay, guys, I'm back now. I had to flash a new ROM as it did not support HQ video playback. Now, I'm on Android Revolution HD, with LeeDroid Kernel. Overclocked to 2Ghz (!) I'm getting exlent performance.
I had totally forgot that I had Any Video Converter Professional, bought years ago. However, I'm now converthing a 1h 16m long Top Gear epsiode, just to give it a try.
Settings are;
Video Codec: mpeg4
800x480
Video Bitrate: 2500 (just testing it out )
Video Framrate: 25 (what do you think? This is default, should I change it?)
Audio Bitrate: 320
Sample Rate: 44100 (?)

I've rolled back to 1,2Ghz, as I did really not see any big improvment @ 2Ghz. Heat vs. performance ratio is not worth it.
However, I'm still converting that video. The problem is that the output file is about 1GB now And the input is 699 MB
It must be the high video bitrate!
UPDATE:
The quality is amazing! The final size was 1,44GB. But it is just perfect! I'm now converting even more

The avi files I have converted is in amazing quality. Now I'm converthing a Blueray movie. Lets see how this ends up

I'm currently using Handbrake and using the Apple 2TV preset and its working fine. I don't plan on changing since its easier to just have one preset and using the same file with my Ipad, Xoom, and Apple 2TV.

Also used DVD Fab8 Video Converter/MP4/genericMP4-h264. Used single pass, made filesize 4000mb, and make sure to use the stereo or Dolby II setting for audio.
Speaking of Handbreak, that app is not shy. Thought my i7 was going to burst into flames.
I've used Handbrake to encode from a DVD but I haven't gotten past the trying out different settings phase. When I get home I will have to post the settings I've come up with that worked for me.

1. Just using the Universal settings.
2. Av Bitrate 4000 Codec AAC (Faac) Samplrate 44.1 bitrate 128 and DRC 0 Motion Est Meth - Diamond
3. Av Bitrate 2200 Codec AAC (Faac) Samplerate 48 Bitrate 160 and DRC 4 Motion Est Meth - Diamond
These have all come from diff posts I've seen from others. Anyone got the mouthing on?
AppleTV2 preset works with the native video player, except for some choppiness. The instructions posted in my link above didn't work at all, not even on my PC with VLC.
AVI's play just fine with RockPlayer.

I use #3 and it works great. Videos are clear.
And depending on the source resolution you may or may not get full screen.
BTW, these are converted from 7GB+ MKV files.
I have tried converting some 720 shows with handbrake under the appletv2 settings as mp4 qqplayer was unable to see the file, Rockplayer Light was able to play the file with slight video lag, and audio lag.
I also tried using e.mote's script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11768975&postcount=8 and it produced unusable file for both players

I was also able to try out dvdcatalyst you can grab a free trial here http://www.tools4movies.com/ This has been the best converter so far, it was a simple setup and has a dedicated xoom profile. granted i have only tried one video so far but it looks to be promising
