thanks for the info
Oh, thank god! Just imagine how long we should have waited for 2.0 otherwise!
The whole 1.6 release seemed a bit odd to me. Especially now 2.0 is so fast released after 1.6. In this case I have to agree with HTC.
But I do hope that in the future they keep up with the normal updates. Otherwise it will be a bit of a guessing game "will HTC give us this update yes or no?!".
at least 4 months to get 2.0 damn. i wud love to get 1.6 now. its tough to live with a phone without new things to play with.
Happy x-mas
Sweet looks like HTC will be playing santa this year and giving us 2.0 as a present
this looks amazing. genius. pure genius. i cant wait for this
I cannot wait for this!
I saw in

Motorola Droid (First Android 2.0 Device) wil start shiping in 6 November. so posible we have android 2.0 for next month.

Indeed, you should buy the new droidphone, it has android 2.0 as first of all...
1.6 wouldn't make that big of a difference, also there will be some cooked 1.6 roms I think.
It's the most logical choice for htc to make, it has no use spending a lot of manhours making a 1.6 rom when it's only used for a few months.
Patience is a virtue, and my hero on 1.5 still works like a dream. Stop nagging and be happy for the fact it's comming!
the hero will get 2.0 at the release of the moto droid and the g1 wont get an update to 2.0 because the ram is not enough for 2.0 i think
and tmobile in germany so hadnt released the 1.6 for the g2 touch because they will direct update the g2 touch to 2.0
2.0 with sense that would be very nice
bye

I take it that is a guess ?
I wonder how long HTChave had the 2.0 code. Being such a major Android hardware partner they should have had it for at least as long as Motorola have.
I imagine that the 'please bear with us' is HTC trying to point out that 2.0 will not be released next week at same time as Droid. We'll have to wait a few weeks more.
As someone who's Hero has been away for repair for a week I'll settle for 1.5 in my hand now. How did we ever live without our smartphones ?

bro just see how long htc took to release source code for hero. and this source code just came out last week. so does it really takes so much to guess that 2.0 wont come in 1-2 months?
i wont be less happy than u in any way if comes earlier than i am expecting. but why expect so much and get disappointed?

It's not so sure... It's a RUMOUR that it won't fit (just like he rumoured that 1.6 won't fit on G1 but it does fit after all!)...
So wait for google/t-mobile to something about it... And the user/dev-group of the G1 is so much bigger then the hero (10/20x bigger?) and 2.0 will come to G1, maybe offical maybe by devs! SO it's not a question IF it happens but WHEN it happens!
Sense is not so good at all, just some extra widget's but that's all, like plain (and faster) launcher better then sense

I personally hope we wunt have to rely on Custom Roms to make it faster.
I'm delighted with 1.5 on sense UI as it is, still think its better over stock 2, but I do like pretty things, don't mind waiting a bit longer, maybe they will release it Christmas day
with the leaked 2.1 update to some of the devs, it just got more intense like.
Personally I think that the existence of a leaked "official HTC" 2.1 build for Hero is very encouraging. I'm sure we'll find out more about it over the next few days as those devs who have the build play around with it, but it shows that HTC are definitely working on it and that a release probably isn't too far away.
That being said, I'm personally still happy with the Hero's "sensified" Cupcake build anyway!

Dave

hehe Nexus One is a HTC device so "never buying HTC devices again" but "Buying Nexus One" is kinda stupid
Although I must say, I would prefer Nexus One over the Desire just because I know Google will "always" make sure it'll get new software updates and the Desire updates will be postponed just like the Hero ones due to business agreements and SenseUI issues and more...
I have been using Legends n Eris's ROMS ported onto Hero, so far.. But all that I want is a stable 2.1 ROM from HTC.. Instead of releasing new phones like Legend (Which is just a metal upgrade for HTC Hero + 1GHz proc) they should have concentrated on releasing update for Hero which has a large customer base. And I even read somewhere that Both Sprint Hero n GSM Hero have won awards in their respective categories.. This aint happening..

This isn't a press release - it's rumour and supposition, the same as all the rumour threads on this site.
It may well be that the update doesn't come until April, but this poorly written article isn't an official HTC missive and therefore should be treated as hearsay at best and a fabrication at worst.

Latest reply from HTC Customer Care regarding 2.1 Update for HTC Hero
New Response From [ Anthony (UK - Ireland Support (Tech)) ]
Dear Customer,
We understand that now that a phone running Android OS 2.1 is available that you are excited to get an update for your Hero. We are still hard at work building Sense for this new version but we expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon. Please understand that it takes time to customize any Android version to ensure you have the intuitive experience Sense provides, and we hope you can be patient for just a little while longer.

Inquiry Description Hi, I have been waiting for Android 2.1 Update for my HTC Hero from last 3 months. All that I have got is news of update being getting postponed. Recent one told me that the update is coming in "LATE APRIL". :-( Harsha S
Issue Date & Time
2010/03/17 10:05
I think that HTC should schedule two differents update for each android device, one with clean android OS and optimized drivers focused on specific hardware, and one with optimized senseUI and others HTC customizations... in that case, it could follow OS upgrade very fast and satisfy who want to be updated with OS, and then take all required time to optimize and develop custom UI...
anyway... it is exciting to test and try custom 2.1 roms and the developers here at xda are doing a great work!
but it is also frustrating to wait for HTC official update!
Yeah getting access to a new kernal would be nice
Is this update so important???
We can flash HERO with a good working port rom and we have 2.1
I do not see the problem haha

Sure we have some nice 2.1 roms at the moment but they are inherently buggy with things that will definitely be fixed when we can lay our hands on an official rom things like battery life and 3d graphics.

I've seen that too! I've seen all the threads, and not one of them has an "official" date in it.
The simple fact of the matter is that HTC customer care do not have a clue. Take anything you read as coming from them with a large pinch of salt.
Regardless, this doesn't change the fact that the "press release" you linked to is clearly not an official HTC statement.

dave
What!?
Ok so this has pi**ed me off. I have been waiting for the 2.1 official update to be released now for a LONG time - the issue really is that it was "meant" to come around about now (mid March). It's the fact that it's seeming been pushed back and now artificially put on hold because they don't want to affect the freaking Leg-end. I'd much rather they just announced the update wil be available on a specific date - 23rd July for e.g. and then if it's early its a bonus. They must be aware/accept that Android users are going to be more tech-savvy than most and will therefore not appreciate being jerked around and left in the lurch while users of other Android handsets have 2.1 already and have for a while now = no real technical reason for the delay as far as I'm concerned.
Having said all the above - what do HTC care? If someone from HTC reads these forums then the above is my 2 cents and I think they would create a lot of GOODwill instead of resentment if they were more transparent with their customers. I'm seriously doubting whether to buy HTC or HTC made again because I *like* to be up-to-date with functionalities etc. A platform like Android was *made* to be upgradeable and improved upon and this is a clear case of HTC's beuracracy getting in the way of their customer service. They don't have to do jack sh*t for their customers though because of course once you've bought a phone you're usually locked in - but they sure as hell could learn a thing or two about engendering customer appreciation and loyalty.
So there will be people out there who think "What's the problem?! Your phone runs fine!" Well if you're asking that question then you're probably not reading this forum in the first place because then why would you have any interest in phone OS development and all the joys it brings.
I hope this report is wrong. I hope the ROM comes very soon because I guarantee HTC (not that they care) that delaying it much longer will do quite a lot to put people off their SenseUI phones and HTC in general. Apple is due to release 4.0 soon and Microsoft is about to unleash Winmo7 series so it's not like there's a lack of competition.
You all know what i MEAN - even if i didn't say it right!
I haven't yet found a single 2.1 rom that is stable enough to use daily and that includes my respect and reverence for the talent and hard work that goes into making these cooked roms.
Ola!

Unless they need to make some changes for the hero that we haven't considered?
Can't think what though
What's wrong with 1.5?
Why is everyone so desperate to get 2.1 on their Hero. The 1.5 ROM works very well for me anyway and I don't have any battery or any other problems.
I've tried all the various 2.1 ROMs on this board and while they are very well done I haven't found any to have the battery life of 1.5 so have always reverted back to the shipped ROM.
Now if 1.5 was full of bugs then I could understand all the fuss. As it's not - I can't.
Don't get me wrong I shall upgrade to 2.1 as soon as it's released I just can't understand the rush.
Is there some "must have" facility that I'm missing on the 2.1 ROM?
Froyo will not be released today according to the Android Developer Blog and Google Press Release. Likely in the next few weeks.
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/android-froyo-with-some-sprinkles.html
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/05/android-22-and-developers-goodies.html
"As I said at the beginning, Android 2.2 will be here soon, and some devices will get the update in the coming weeks."
Nexus One update in June, no doubt. What a great update, I can't wait!
If only they'd do some battery work and redo the interface; it would be perfect.
Man if they can give away 5,000 HTC Evo's to people there, they should have given Froyo out to every one else that was at least watching the keynotes on youtube... T.T
Thats weird, I have been reading that it will be available to Nexus One users today as an ota update. I thought the waiting thing was for all the other phones. If I cant get my hands on some Froyo, its gonna be a long few weeks.
Not sure how reputable this site is, but they arent the only ones saying it. and if its on the internet, it must be true.

Not hugely impressed by this to be honest. After being screwed around by HTC with the Hero (which, interestingly, I note is still on 1.5 and will be for the forseeable future) I bought the Nexus One for the precise reason of being first in the queue when updates are released.
Unfortunately, if you're a Nexus One user I wouldn't get your hopes up about a release any time soon. If it was going to come, I imagine it would have been ready for the keynote. The Evo 4G is now Google's favourite toy and I should think that's the only way to get FroYo now.

I think the issue is that blog says the ROM is out today when in fact it is the SDK and NDK. A ROM can be cobbled together from the SDK as is being thrown around twitter, but it is not stable.
Hopefully some developers (CM) start to play with these tools and get us Froyo-lite.

N1 is still going to be first - The Evo runs Sense and will have to go through HTC before it will get a ROM release. I'd put good money that the OTA for the N1 will be available first.

either way, it runs sense and not vanilla android like the nexus so it goes through htc before release.

Christ, a little dramatic don't you think? Froyo was announced mere hours ago! And Google employees have said that devices will be getting it over the next few weeks and they demoed it ON THE NEXUS ONE! Why do you believe that we shouldn't get our hopes up and that the Evo will be the only way to get it now? Are you seriously that depressed, or is this just another troll? I can't tell.
The SDK is here today, and I'm sure Google is working hard at polishing up the firmware update for the Nexus One and will push it out in due time. No need to panic yet.
With Android 2.3 Gingerbread due out before the end of the year. How long do you think it will take HTC to push out the upgrade ?
IMO HTC are not the fastest of companies to update their OS the latest google offerings.
The new Samsung is rumored to be running 2.3 out of the box.
Whats your thoughts ?

when I see that my working colleagues with a HTC legend are still on android 2.1 I doubt a software update in the first year... :\ Although DHD may be (one of their) top phones. But lets hope HTC improves on that, I would even pay for Android version upgrades...
Isn't Gingerbread rumoured not suppose to allow for any overlays.? If so then I doubt it will come to the DHD.
in my experience owning HTC handsets with sense, there will only be 1 update during the life time of the gadget. being 2.3 or 3.0, don't expect it to be any time soon, especially when current DHD is not every widely available yet.
I say 6-8 month at least.
Its one annoying aspect of owning HTC sense phone, they are not a software specialist.
However, the fact that Samsung is getting Nexus Two with Gingerbread probably means HTC is under pressure to have at least one cracking phone with 2.3. We can only wait and see if they choose to update DHD or launch a new line.
Really hated Galaxy S and gutted that's what the Nexus Two will be based on
People always say HTC isn't the best with updates... but who is, aside from google with the nexus one?
I agree no one is quick in getting software updates so no reason to just slag off HTC.
I really hope HTC don't take too long. But then again i plan on rooting and loading a custom gingerbread rom, stock of course. Now about that root...

I have to diagree.
HTC is the first and biggest androids producer. They made Nexus One which is great when it comes to software support. If anyone they should be setting the standard not dragging the progress. They said it themselves that they wanted to benefit from the "Google Experience", and frankly speaking they are the last brand on earth to have excuses for not keeping up with android progress.

Isn't Gingerbread rumoured not suppose to allow for any overlays.? If so then I doubt it will come to the DHD.

That doesnt make any sense the os is supposed to be free to anyone to use any overlay or luncher they want to use
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I ve heard the same thing as well. supposed to be one of google's way to resolve the OS fragmentation problem. However I heard that's going to happen in Honeycomb, not Gingerbread.

ooh interesting, that would be stir things up a bit becuase that would mean if samsungs phones are the same as htc (software), then they have to either battle on hardware or price
but no sense

It's a debunked rumor. AOSP interface has barely changed with Android 2.3
My guess is 2-3 months, One of the reasons I chose HTC was because they are among the fastest to update ( I love Sense ). Samsung just started rolling 2.2 out, Sony Ericsson haven't even updated to 2.2, Sony Ericsson getting 2.1 this weekend..

Yes,but then again, the Hero was an old, outdated device then.Desire had already come out and there were many better devices out there.Remember that the Desire was one of the first phones to get Froyo(I think second after the Nexus One).Don't be so sure it will take much time...

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but my point being people buying DHD shouldn't put too much hope in getting gingerbread immediately. DHD hardware is superb and the sense overlay on 2.2 has got lots of great features, and its probably just a matter of time before DHD get rooted and 2.3 be ported over anyway.
I f none of these matters as much as getting 2.3 straightaway, hold on for a couple more weeks and get the Nexus Two is probably a better idea(and wear the pain of a samsung phone, I m not falling for that again)
if i recall gingerbread was roughly estimated for december/janurary
thought there were still issues with oracle and google over android using dalvik vm?so I thought, yes me only- not starting a rumor- that that might have delayed it as dalvik is part of java and ISN'T open source?
anyways your device doesnt get 1 update only
look at the mytouch 3g? had android 1.5, 1.6 and 2.2 3 upgradeds in its life?
now look at the desire, htc call it a high end product. it was on 2.1 is running 2.2 and will definately get gingerbread when it comes out, but no time scale will be given for that.
HTC are better then any company in giving updates if anything compared to other companies.
when an company decides to put its own overlay is when things get delayed. if they keep it vanilla releases would be quick and easy, but how do you make your device unique? what features do you add to make you stand out the crowd?

You're the man!
The big ol' unsourced, unconfirmed, who-knows-if-it's-true rumor of the past week or so has been that Android 2.3 -- Gingerbread -- will be announced/released/something today. It's just about lunchtime, and no sign of anything sweet yet -- though as you can see from the Google analytics above, it looks like it's still pinging around out there.
Will we see it today? Dunno. Will we see it tomorrow? Dunno. Are our fingers crossed? Absofrigginlutely.
http://www.androidcentral.com/gingerbread-coming-today-its-still-pinging
YES PLEASE !
I'm excited to see how it is, no fingers crossed since I'll be waiting for Sprint to push it .
Cyanogenmod will push it before sprint. Our evos are sense devices, so it will take htc some time to get sense on it and sprint.... luckily we have cyanogen

This. Although I'm going to be conflicted between running Cyanogenmod with Android 2.3 but no 4G and the fact that a technician is coming to my work tomorrow to install a Sprint 4G repeater
Damn.... hopefully cyanogen will have 4g done by the time he compiles 2.3
Well I guess the new OTA update released today has something to do with it...
Posted from my EVO 4G running Azrael 2.4 with Dell Stage

new ota???
Remember the great modders here beat HTC to releasing 2.2 with sense here! I really wouldn't doubt they won't do it with 2.3 also.
I don't think it is coming out today. Wouldn't the employees release it during their normal shift hours 7-3 or whatever. That is just my thought lol I think they will release it tomorrow when apple releases their upgrades ios 4.2

you wont see a 2.3 with "sense" for a while. HTC is too busy pushing the new "sense" out. U may get a 2.3 "sense" leak by Feb. or March.
Man i wish it came out yesterday :|. Well let's hope its well worth the wait.
oh well for that!! lol.
wouldve been nice if they at least gave us a teaser screenshot or a bit of information to hold us over.. dang..
I don't know why people always get so down on HTC so far they have been great with pushing updates. If an update is coming I don't think it will take 3 to 4 months. Some thought Froyo was going to take a long time too and we got it on a few weeks. If your going to speculate how about speculating that the cup is half full.
From watching all of the handset manufacturers out there HTC is by far and away the fastest to provide updates to their phones.
Samsung still doesn't have 2.2 and Motorola isn't that fast either.
Is there anywhere there is a guarantee that the EVO will be getting the next update?
My guess is yes mainly because it is still Sprint's best Android phone.
