Android 2.0 - G1 General

I remember a few post for porting Android 2.0. Any word on the development or if it is being continued? I can't seem to find the post anywhere. Just people randomly mentioning 2.0 in topics, search feature doesn't work to well. I wouldn't mind following the development of one of these.

Im sure you will know if/when someone is truely working on it...

How did search "not work too well"?
http://www.google.com/cse?cx=000825..."2.0"&sa=Search&cof=FORID:0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

I'm not stupid, I know how to use the search function. I said it didn't work to well because it didn't provide me with what I was looking for. I found Maxima's Ecliar dump, but never a thread with developer progress.

I never said you were stupid... I just pointed out all the threads I found when I searched. You could narrow down your results to just the dev section if that's what you wanted. But you seemed to have answered your own question.

Your first post implied that I was ignorant for saying, "search did not work to well" and I don't believe I did answer my own question, I stated what I found. Again, I know how to use the search function, I have narrowed down the search to just the Dream Development Section.
As I was saying, I remember seeing a topic on the development process of 2.0, but I could not find it with search, that's why I am asking if anyone knows of a topic or if someone is working on a port.

the eclair dump might be worked on by some devs, but I believe a lot of them are waiting until the official AOSP 2.0 release to start toying around with it so they can avoid legal troubles.

NEW USERS!

We've got a lot of new users appear on here lately, it looks like in search of updated roms for the x1.
PLEASE IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS THEN DO NOT FLASH A ROM
without
A) reading
B) reading some more
C) reading even more!
All the roms should come through the SE Update Service, please use that as it is a simpler method and if something goes wrong, then you can go to SE to complain..
Please use the search if you have a problem, if you don't find what you want the first time, then search again, maybe try searching around the subject.
There's a very very good chance that the question has already been answered several times!
If you can't find the answer then flick through the older pages on the thread, if it's something to do with the operation of the X1 then there's a good chance it's in the oldest pages of the forum.
Experienced members get upset by people starting new threads with the same moans or questions because it really clogs up the great search system with all manner of wasted threads. If there's an existing thread than use that please! If the questions already been asked don't ask it again!
This forum is not a SE support forum, no-one (that will admit to it anyway) is from SE so if you have issues with them why not raise it with them?
If you want to know how you X1 does various stuff try one of the operators online guides.
If you flash a custom rom or another rom obtained from here, despite being warned not too. DO NOT go running off to MS or SE complaining that it's all gone wrong, they
A) won't likely listen
B)won't like us very much
Ta.
You should keep this on the very first ROMS subforum page fards
I know It's already written everywhere... old problem... but many people falls in parachute here, landing directly inside the ROMs post from external links. XDA DEVS is da bomb
And no newbies seem to read anything but exclusively what they are looking for

Hmmm...a rather sweeping generalisation methinks...
I'm a noob here, I'll admit that. However, I'm a board Admin elsewhere in cyberspace so I know exactly where you're coming from. I've done my time reading, understanding, occasionally asking relevant questions in the relevant places, and trying to help out where I might have some answers.
Your advice is spot on, and anyone who is inexperienced should tread slowly and carefully. There is all the time in the world to learn how to get it right, but it takes very little time to totally stuff things up.
"Use the search, Luke"
Instead of telling new guys to read, you could've put the same effort into and making a nice thread for them instead.
Maybe a list on where to start reading and so on!
This thread has no meaning whatsoever. New guys will probably just read first lines skip it and ask a question.
And remember we have all been there, not knowing how to flash etc.
Also searching can be a very time consuming thing to do, and asking and getting an answer is often way faster.
this thread doesnt make sense without any links to where to read...
This forum is where you read. it is a development forum, not a help forum!
you read the first thread that the moderators try to get EVERY NEW USER to read, this was a gentle reminder to get people to do just that.
People are not here to act as customer service for people who are too lazy to use the search facility on this site.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=681487&postcount=1
try that and the one below for starters.

A perfect example of not reading. The purpose of this thread is not to reference, it's to inform.

and unfortunately it gets harder the more threads we get asking exactly the same thing over and over again.. ;P
Yea that is true. I was searching PIE6 and i ran across about 13-14 threads of the same question. i was on like page 3 or 4 of the search before i got the right hit.
maybe xda-newbies.com should be registered as a none development and referance site? lol

which reminds me the pie8 files that sun_dream posted in his BA 6.5 thread work, when copied over on itjes 6.5 (it's still pie6 core I think. but a bit snappier).
How about a period of not being able to post when registering ?, a day or three would give new members with their questions a little time to cool down and search/read for the answers which will usually be found here somewhere.
Just an idea.

I actually think that's not a bad idea, was just suggesting it to a couple of other members. Only drawback I think is that it couldn't be restricted to one sub forum such as the x1 from my experiences with vbulletin..
So it would restrict some of the truly amazing first posts that have come from some of the great genii?? on this site..
Alternatively we could have another Sub-forum, in the X1, with for newbies to ask the same questions of each other (like a creche) and anyone found straying outside of that forum until they've learnt to search and read would get electrocuted.. or something..
you mean, something like asking a question about an advanced feature, if you have it right then you're allowed to the real forums?
Well to be honest, the only thing a noob should read are the stickies. I learned to flash, edit, modify, type, behave, proof read, error correction, ask nicely, say please thank you cookie i love you, by reading those stickies.
Actually I think it's a good idea to have a sub-forum for the newbies, and then bomb them with the 'READ THE F-WORD STICKIES OR DIE' *going too far here...
Search ?? No thanks

But to search efficient you have to know what to search for, the keywords are important in a search engine. And when you're a newbie those terms might not be known to you. Or you might not understand a lot of them.
And beeing sarcastic about my comment is not helping anyone that is just pure immature.

Lets face it. Most people that come here with questions like "how can I flash my ROM?" just didn't bother to look. And trust me, there's plenty.
The bothersome thing is not that people ask questions, that's normal in a developer environment. What does bother me, and most - if not all - others is that they ask questions they can answer themselves by putting just a wee bit of time into it. Instead, they had rather have other people spend time doing everything for them. I can see where this attitude comes from - it's easier, but you get my point.

If people manage to use a search engine to find this site then they can manage to use a search engine to find the answers to their questions.
Not knowing or being too lazy to be independent enough to search is the real immaturity.

where did the tutorials for hero go

wtf???!!! i was using one then the page refreshed and its gone and now im stuck with a half done phone...what gives
Everything was merged into the main hero thread.
Thread locked and moved.
This Ridiculous
There were multiple threads, each taking a different approach , about various issues concerning the HERO rom. I know the mods are doing their job but this is extremely frustrating when a thread is actually helping you. I managed to get HERO rom working with Lawrence's thread and then I tried to push a new VK through another Tutorial thread but guess what ? It was removed and now my VK doesn't work. How am I suppose to ask questions? Where did the thread go?
If you are going to delete a thread, move it, or merge it, it would be extremely helpful if there is a sticky or something letting us know.
they were all saying the exact same thing in 40 dialects, it's repetitive useless information and doesn't really do anything but clutter the forums.
I dont see one thread with the information i am looking for? where is the consolidation? where are they merged?

I totally agree. This deleting of the threads is getting out of hand. I was almost done with the step by step instructions by lawrence when the thread was deleted!!
I guess the short answer to your question is don't venture into uncharted waters, i.e. messing around with a beta ROM that you have no idea how stable it will be, and not really having an understanding of exactly how to troubleshoot on your own. This is a developers forum, not a place to ask a thousand questions, each of which has either been asked or answered already.

that's my point. its too bad because the only reason i got hero to run was because of Lawrence thread. now where is it?

I dont want to ask questions; i just follow the developers own tutorials and thats it. but im forced to ask questions when the thread im using is removed.
JustAnotherCrowd - HERO ROM
There was a thread on a rom JustAnotherCrowd was about to release, looked real promising but now its been deleted.... What's up with that?
i swear people really? are you fing serious?
read the instructions, understand what they are doing, then do it. this stuff is beta, its not even suppose to work on the g1. if you want a stable os on your phone then dont fck with it.
creating threads crying about how somethingdidnt work just looks childish.
if you want to ask a question, goto the irc where people are there to help each other. creating thread after thread or posting after posting isnt going to solve your problems...
As someone who is NOT rushing off to unstable hero builds, I for one do like the cleaning up of those threads. If its hero related, it should be kept in hero thread. There was one hero thread, and 4 'how to fix hero' threads. This clutters up the forum. Everyone is rushing to an unstable build to get to rosie UI and not realizing flashing to hero requires some knowledge and following directions extra carefully.
Either people should STOP making new threads for fixing hero, or people actually read before flashing it to see EVERYTHING that is required to do before loading it.
Thanks mods.
mods are deleting **** for joke lol
stop creating threads asking where threads went.

Amen brother. Unless you have an apk of this, and it might help development with android 2(Link to developing Google apps because of sync api commands in maps app? I don't know.) What I'm trying to say is...don't make a new thread if it has NOTHING TO TO WITH DEVELOPMENT. Thanks.
Seriously. DEV or GTFO.
I kind of disagree; I think this is important for the development section:
It could inspire developers to work a way into porting android 2.0 to G1. It may inspire some genius into converting the g1 into a multi OS system that can switch between a GPS NAV and a Phone, in a simple way “switch Rom”. I left it open without a comment because I rather for everyone to use his imagination and transform this into development!!!

I’m aware of that and the problems associated with porting 2.0, but I also believe in the XDA development Team. I would like to remind everyone where we have been and where are we now in terms of android, just imagine flashing back to stock RC 28 .
Just a note to OP, any dev that would even conjure doing this would more than likely look @ android.com or other android related sites with news and other articles just like you linked for us, granted you were trying to share what you have learned, it is completely irrelevant to this forum. Gladly take this thread to a "general"disscussion. Besides its still early look @ 2.0 and will be a bit before we see progress, and was hoping this thread meant somone was porting already, yet, to my dismay another off topic discussion that let my hopes fall to the bottomless pit of irony.

Why not either do 1 of 2 things. Learn how to search or learn how to dev. Either one will help this community out. Because you clearly didnt search as there are TONS of post just in the Kaos Froyo thread about this and how he is trying to have it resolved in his next kernal. And before you ask when he going to release it....he will release it when he does.
And last, why post this here? Wrong section. This has nothing to do with dev...this is just a nag, which belongs in General.

[Q] Being a noob: where and how should I post mod related questions?

yep, my first post here. I fell this post doiesn't belong here, but due to forum restrictions I can't post in the correct forum (yet). So please take my apologies...
Just found this brilliant Virtous G-Lite Rom which appears to turn mir Desire Z into exactly what I bought it for in the first place. Unfortunately the ROM isn't supporting my hardware keyboard (no ä, ö, ü, ß not even ? can be typed here). I've literally been through all 40 pages of the ROM's thread and found a few posts addressing the same issue. However, there's no truly satisfying answer. I tried various additional keyboard setting apps but they didn't help at all with the physical keyboard.
So my only question is: will this ever be addressed at all or should I better give up and stick to CM7 or MIUI or even my stock ROM?
Any help is welcome, and if someone could try to transfer this question into the correct forum, I'd be a happy person.
welcome.
and your best bet is to start contributing to the forum and when you can get into the OS Dev forums, you can post your question there. Considering that you actually went through and read the whole thread and couldn't find anything, it is definitely grounds to post a question.
The biggest rule of thumb here (atleast from my experience) is SEARCH first then ask if you can't find anything. (Searching includes searching the thread itself, searching the subforum, and all that).
I can tell you though that since you're talking Virtuous, then Do a quick search in RMK40's other threads. He also does Virtuous Unity, 1.02, and a one more (can't remember). search those forums and see if anyone is running in your problem as well. I hope that helps.
