I was thinking that it might be a good idea to have a list of things that will leave you with a shiny paper weight.
I'll start:
If you have an EBI1 Phone and flash a new rom without flashing an EBI1 Kernel - You will brick your phone.
Perhaps a mod could sticky this if it gets bigger.

No, You wont. If you don't flash an EBI1 kernel, you just won't boot up into the ROM. Just go into recovery and reflash the working kernal and you will be fine.
What will brick your phone is
1. Disturbing your phone and interupting a SPL flash.
2. Flashing the wrong radio update to your phone.
Also flashing the danger spl before the newest radio should take care of that pesky fuctionality.

hahahaa wow. um using it on your GF? lollololol jk immature much sorry
um seriously yeah if you have the old radio and flash the new SPL...
flashing the new SPL by itself too, to keep from bricking gotta flash the newest radio right before the SPL, whether or not you had the newest radio
Here's a fun one: set up a script that uses fastboot to flash a radio image via fastboot. Set it to choose a random number between 1 and 10, if it chooses the correct number for the old radio it's buh-bye G1. Just sure you have 1.33.2005 SPL installed.
If you hadn't noticed I'm bored.

i know right?
Haven't tested this but i assume it would work.
1. Get an spl.
2. Have a hex editor.
3. Open spl with hex editor.
4. Randomly replace values in the spl.
5. Sign the spl.
6. Flash the spl.

im wondering if i could get the non "raped" version of the 1.5 firmware for my dream and actually have a google phone... and not some half assed rogers mess.
right now i have a brand new HTC dream with 1.5 rogers, build 1.85
easiest way to unbrand it?
I wouldn't exactly call it a mess...Rogers hasn't done a lot to "brand it". 3 icons and a splash screen? I have seen way worse.
But to answer your question, check the developer forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=448
You'd need to root it, then you can flah any Google source based build you want.
You'll want to start here
Don't be doing what is in that link, it involves writing a phone-killer spl to it.
You don't need to change the SPL or radio.
Root it, write on a boot.img with a kernel built from HTC's kernel source, and install your most preferred system.img.

Do you know where we could find this file? Also, if we already installed the danger spl and updated radio how can we go back? My radio locks up sometimes so maybe the new radio for the rogers dream will fix this issue.

Look in the various community builds to see if they mention having an HTC sourced kernel.... if you can't find one, download the source from developer.htc.com and compile it yourself.
As for going back from deathspl, I think I saw an official rogers nbh floating around somewhere... installing that should put the thing right back to stock and shouldn't be much risk of bricking.
I know you might not like Rogers rom,but I'd highly recommend the Rogers rom you can see in my signature,it's really nice, you can remove the Rogers apps, while you have apps2sd and all the goodies. That's the version I have been using for a couple of weeks and is really nice, plus the Hero theme is very nice.

Does anyone here know if the radio image distributed with the hero 2.1 update would work on the magic? I'm not eager to test, since if it does not, it will brick the phone, but the previous 6.35 radio images DID work, and we knew they work before HTC came out with 1.5 sense update.
How did that came to be? And is there any idea we can find this out before flashing ?
Some brave soul needs to actually try it. I don't believe there is any other way of knowing other than trying.
since when does a radio brick the phone?
ive erased my radio fully, multiple times..
now if you screw up fast boot.... then your hosed.
wyefye : if you're feeling bold then, how about you be the first one to try If you do succeed, and it works, please post pictures. If not, post too, so we may offer you condolences

DO NOT FLASH THIS IF YOU DON'T WANNA RISK BRICKING YOUR PHONE!! WE DO _NOT_ KNOW IF IT WORKS!!
But what's the point? AFAIK this radio is just a regional variation of the 6.35.xx.xx we all know and use.
I try to flash the new radio but when i reboot the radio its still the same.
Can some one try and see what happen.
well did it flash it ? What message did you get ? Did the loading bar appear in fastboot corner on the phone ?
Loading bar all the way trough, but it wont update.
And what did it say in cmd window ?
I flash the radio, boot, system and userdata but no luck, it wont load.

Why did you expect it to work? The ROM is made for the Hero, not the Magic. This thread concerns only the radio, not the full ROM.

Ok, so i just flashed the yetirom on my phone. Its supposed to be the stock rom. So could i flash the nexus one update on my phone? will there be any side effects?
I'm not positive, but I believe if you flash a rom that isn't made for your phone, it'll brick the phone. Something about flashing a different radio. So i wouldn't do it, but i'm not an expert.
You need to do a search before posting... If you did, you would have learned that you need the proper hardware configerations installed within the OS for your phone otherwise it won't work...

Alright thanks. That helps. I was soooooo close to flashing the manual nexus one froyo rom. Ah, well. Looks like ill need to wait a bit. So if i did this would it render the phone useless? (like the moto flashing days?) or do i just go into recovery and reflash?

From what I hear, flashing another radio onto your phone will brick it completely and is not recoverable.
GSM and CDMA
Doesn't sound like they mix.
They don't. The Sprint CDMA Hero is a very difficult phone to brick...unless you flash a GSM Hero Rom. It isn't the rom that screws it up...it's flashing the radio.

Hi to anybody who might read this ,i have already searched and only found one post and they went completely off topic
I want to know if there is maybe some way of installing an android rom onto my htc wildfire without rooting (rooting will void the warranty and the phone is like a few days old)
I want to get a different mod because the one i currently have is the stock one and it sucks i have always admired the people of xda for the creativity and knowledge in the roms so please help
Short answer: No
Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
You need to root in order to be able to install any custom rom.
You can always unroot, if you need.

well if rooting is realy soooooooooooooooo important then could u guide me through this plz and what are the dangers of rooting(bricking etc)
well if you tell us what hboot version you have we might be able to tell you if you can or not by software.
turn off your phone.
press volume down and power on.
release volume down.
then write here what hboot version it is.
but i tell you, if hboot version are 1.01.000x you can't root it by software, and you'll need to get it done by someone that owns an xtc clip (piece of hardware).
But i dont quite get youre statement that there is only one thread about this subject and it goes off topic fast.
I think there are several threads about both rooting, hboot versions and much more. And all stuff that you need to know are actually in there.
Switch off your phone:
Press the volume down button + power.
The Phone will start.
Let us know what you see
Rom 2.2+ <-?
Hboot 1.+ <-?
s-on / s-off <-?
If your rom is 2.2(+/up) you will have the Hboot 1.(+/up) so there is no way atm to root it.
i have the same problem, we have 2 wait
(yes, threre is NO WAY at the moment)
If you have rom 2.1 (and lower) /hboot 0.8 (or something lower than 1.) its possible to root it to use a custom rom.
How to root it / use a custom rom:
Sorry in these Forum are tons of guides

if done properly.. the chances of bricking are very less. i ve rooted my phone over 3 times now.
I had a dead row in the lcd so had to get it replaced under warrenty. Installed a RUU and got it under warrenty.
Then rooted again.
The replaced display was dull, not bright enough, installed the RUU and got it replaced again under warrenty.
Then rooted again,
Broke my led. ( was trying the strobe mode in a high brightness led app.. he he)
Installed the RUU and got the led replaced.
Then, Rooted again .
Now i have a feeling the camera is not functioning rite. i see white patches here and there in the images, and the image is not crisp. i can see pixels.. i gues its time for me to RUU again.. he he..

Just how long you've been using your Wildfire? That's a lot of issues.
Been using mine for 5 months and no problems so far except some scratches on the body due to me dropping it violently. Time to RU.. oh wait.

its been 7 months now. Problem with the dead row was unfortunate, but led was my mistake. i knew high brightness strobe would break it. still i went for it.
and camera, perhaps the service guys mishandled it while fixing the led? or perhaps its just dust inside, thought its not prominently visible.

Hello everyone
I just bought a used HTC Dream G1, before that i had a Blackberry 8310 and before that an HTC TyTN.
The G1 i just got is kinda slow...It's using the cyanogen mod and i wish to install a newer and hopefully faster operating system on it.
I really need help, like step by step help and i am willing to provide any info you might require in helping me.
Thanks ahead, much appreciated
EDIT:
just some info on the phone/operating systen
Android version: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-cyanogenmod
mod version: cyanogenmod-6.1.0-RC1-DS
build number FRG83
ok sounds good, first thing you need to do is power off your device, than reboot holding the camera+power buttons untill you the 'Bootloader' screen...
On there you will find the provided information we will need to know what the next step is for you
If i dont reply back fast enough and you feel crazy enough to try this on your own, a good place to start is in the guide provided in my signature! Helps you root, un-root and many other things... also may give you a little better understanding of how things work for the device..
anyway, depending on your radio and spl is how we know what you need to do next so get that information for us and im sure we can all help you.

that's all that the screen had to show, there was also an "hboot" button and a <back> FastBoot Mode button.
tried reading about it all a bit, but it seems far too confusing...doesnt seem even remotely similar to how my old hermes used to get flashed...
lol ok, well if thats your phone stats and you say you have cyan running that means you have the minimum rooting done, so your next step is to find out what you would like to do? there are many older roms you can flash that are compatible with your radio/spl.... but they are old...
or you can take the next step and upgrade your radio and spl to flash the latest roms... which kick ass for todays standards of the G1...
basically what you want to do is pick up on step 1 of that guide to flash the 'Danger spl', than continue on with the radio's and hboot files untill your device is at 2.22.28.25 and 1.33.0013d
if you need any help on the proccess let me know, before you cause any harm (bricking) your device... first things first!!! is your g1 a US or UK model?
hmmm...i'm not sure actually, it has a T-Mobile logo on it...
any way for me to check?
uhhhhmmmm im not sure exactly... google? lol i have the US model and it also says tmobile across it... but i dont want to assume you have us, so just check that and let me know... i can help you if its a us model lol
I think i figured out a way to figure it out (that sounded weird)...
Does your phone have a QWERTY keyboard or a QWERTZ keyboard?
Did a little poking around, and since my G1 has a QWERTZ keyboard, i guess it comes from germany and when i did a hard reset to day it reverted to german language, so i'm pretty sure it's german
ooo yup ok thats def not us model lol uhhhmmmm i know with rooting and stuff there are some files on my guide that shouldn't be flashed on your phone... im sure there's many guides out there to help you though... you still want the same goal, which is radio 2825 and spl 0013d, so than you can flash good roms
Thanks for the help
I'll give it a go tomorrow seeing as how it's 4AM right now
k, if you need help let me know
Hello there,
just wanna ask if you have upgraded already your radio and spl? i have the same info on my G1 as yours, im afraid to brick my phone, since i once brick another G1 already
Nah, i haven't done it yet, i'm too scared of bricking the thing. But i'll be sure to post in this topic if i do get the courage to do it.
Damn...i still don't know which rom/other things i'm suppose to use...anyone wanna help?
@jhenards: well, it turns out that i didn't need to update my radio or SPL. I just needed to flash a new ROM on it.
I'll link you to the tutorial i used.
Before you do anything else, make a backup in Titanium Backup so you can just restore your apps later.
Also make one in Nandroid (here's a tutorial for that http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Using_the_Recovery#NANDroid_backups)
Download Cyanogenmod 6.1.0DS ==> http://goo-inside.me/cm/dream_sapphire/stable/update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed.zip
Download Google Apps (tiny) ==> http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-mdpi-tiny-20101020-signed.zip
Then flash those using this tutorial ==> http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Installing_CyanogenMod_5+#Installing_CyanogenMod_ROM
And after everything is done restore your backups using Titanium Backup and use this tutorial to make your phone very very fast:
http://nctritech.wordpress.com/2010...rmance-no-swap-compcache-or-10mb-hack-needed/
That's how i did it
if you dont upgrade your radio/spl then you should consider either super d or super e, they dont get much better than these with the older combo
also try super csdi and even though lots of people disagree, there are some nice sense roms out there that run pretty fast and stable on the older radio/spl
but if your ready to update there is a ton of awesome roms out there that will bring the g-1 back to life!
good luck!
You should definitely upgrade your radio and spl.it gives you more ram to work with, how can you go wrong with that when all you want is a faster phone. But do take your time with the learning curve

Unfortunately my G1 died...and no, i did not brick it, the phone was running amazingly fast...until some idiot raced through a puddle (read lake) next to me and got both the phone and me soaking wet...so now the phone can't read the microsd (which works perfectly when i plug it into my computer) and it's stuck looping the CM logo...which means it can't boot.
