I think the original Gmail application has push, but it doesn't work well with the Hero's leds. HTC mail works well with leds but it doesn't have push.
Any idea?
K-9 Mail Beta has push with IMAP IDLE. I'm using the Beta but I think they are close to doing a market build that incorporates the new push code. The green LED flashes when you have mail (in addition to an audible alert, etc.).
Thanks for K-9 app, but I guess the orginal Gmail also has green led flashing, but the trackpoint's led doesn't flash.

It's the server end that "pushes", and HTC Mail does support push email using MS Exchange sync. Gmail now supports this protocol too, so you can have you Gmail "pushed" into the HTC mail app if you wish.

Thanks Dave I'll give it a try.
Alright, I didn't know this. I'll give it a try too, and report it back! Thanks!
Hi, it's still the same. No PUSH in ActiveSync. I sent an email from one account to my Gmail. After 10 mins, I didn't see any notification. I get the email when I do it manually or wait for 15 mins (as in the send/receive setting)
Any idea?

I use Exchange to sync all of my mails, contacts, calendar appointments with my Hero.
I have my sync settings set to check every five minutes and any new messages etc do come through every 5 minutes. If I was to set it to 'As Items Arrive', mails come through in seconds.
Push works for me.

So you didn't change your send/receive settings "As items arrive"?

I used to have the sync settings set to As Items Arrive and it worked perfectly. I've changed to sync every 5 mins purely to get a little extra battery life out of my phone.
My Hero is currently pinging away every five minutes with emails from XDA Developers with email updates on the threads I'm subscribed to.
Thanks! it's sloved!

So I am a bit confused. I am setting up Cingular Xpress mail which uses push technology like the blackberrys. What I am confused about is what exactly is push email. Is there a way for emails to get sent to my phone directly when they have been sent versus having to send/recieve everytime i want to get my email? Thanks.

Push email - Email is received on your device the very moment it gets sent to you from the "sender".
Standard email - You set up your device to receive email in increments of time (check every 15 minutes or 30 minutes, etc.)

Yes there is. That's exactly what push email does. Cingular Xpress is a good cheap way to go about that too.
That's just a really simple explanation. Does that clear it up a little?
Thank you. that clears it up... however when using xpress mail from cingular, it doesn't automatically show me my emails. I use the "other pop" option to try and get it running with xpress mail. But once again it only gives me my new mail when I say "send/receive" I know my email client for school supports imap idle so does that mean I need to setup xpress mail for an IMAP account? I am just using hte xpress mail setup on the phone and not the personal edition that requires a running desktop. Thanks.
Is it possible to change the function of the Send / Receive button (on the e-mail manila tab) so that it synchronises ALL of the e-mail accounts you have on your phone?
Bump for help. Surely this should be possible. It is pretty pointless to have to select each mailbox and press Send/Receive for each one
I was thinking this too, I would love a button that synced both my accounts. Surely for someone that knows what they are doing this would be quite easy?

Also interested. Anyone?
Isn't syncing emails a bit old fashion?
I find the battery on the HD is fine to use push email (constant connection) so you get your emails immediately.
I use www.seven.com (their beta program which is free)
This converts any imap, pop3, gmail, works exchange server (emails, contacts, calendar), etc email into push email.

How do you find this with data costs etc. Do you ever go above your monthly limit etc?
Don't really need any new solutions. Personally giving my details to a third party so they can send me the emails as I receive them doesn't appeal to me. If I receive an email a couple of hours late, not harm will be done
Still no updates on the original post?
I just set my emails to download every 30 mins and push email for Exchange.
Why is it so hard to push send/recieve if you want it for each account. How many email accounts do you need to have? I have 4 - its not big deal.

hi, sorry!
i have a question here.
i have three accounts from MS.
1 live.com 1 msn.com 1 hotmail.com
How can I set them up in the BS?
I can only receive/send one account at one time by signing the Windows live messenger and selecting to synchronize email.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Hi all.
Is there a way to set up Gmail account on HERO to get emails straight on me mobile and not have gmail to check every 5mins for them ?
It really annoys me that Im not able to get it done and have to wait for the mobile to sync every 5minutes...
I had nokia e71 before and it was working like a dream..and not to have Google system and not be able to do that???...
Thanks for any help
I take it you are not using the Gmail app, and are using HTC's email app?
Google sync now support ActiveSync for Exchange, so you can set up Gmail as it it were an exchange server, and have your email pushed out to you.
See here. The instructions don't include Android, but you should be able to work out what you need to do from the iPhone set up.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks,
I have one exchange account setup already and it looks like I can not set any more ?
There is this 'google mail' app on my hero and it is the one that is set for gmail at the moment.I can not change any setting in it (or can I ? I had a look and could not find anything)

Hi guys,
i got an issue that i cannot solve and the search function didnt give any solutions.
I got gmail IMAP Account on my HD2 and when i click on send and receive, only the unread emails are downloaded.
I should be able to see all emails if i go to the folder "all emails" and press send/receive again, but altough it connects, it doesnt download anything.
So the question: Is there a way to see your already read emails on your mobile phone in wm6.5 with the hd2
Thanks in advance,
Ali
are you checking teh mail from another machine? (PC perhaps) that could be removing the messages once you send and recieve from there.

i do, but it doesnt remove or download them.
When going into my gmail account online, i still can see all entries.
i checked that already
Are they in the inbox or in "all mail" in Gmail?
Only those in the inbox will display. If your other PC moves them out of it (or gmail does it on its own once the mails are retrieved by the PC) they wouldn't show.
Must be such an issue, because I use 3 imap accounts on my HD2, that are also used by 2 other PCs, and everything's fine. Those are on my own server though.
If you use gmail on the HD2 you might want to use activesync instead of imap though....

They are not moved out, in my gmail account i can see all emails in "all mail" and "inbox"
But even if, the mobile email app also has a "all mail" folder of gmail so it should work anyway
The active sync thing is not a thing you can use when you arent at home. i would like to read new emails on my phone too.

I think I see what you mean, I encountered the same "issue" and found the solution "by accident": by default the Gmail account is set to keep emails from the 3 or 6 previous days, so that it erases the messages older than 3 or 6 days on you HD2. You can set a different time period, up to 30 days I think, but no sure...
The thing is I can't remember where it is... sorry, but that may be a lead...

No, it's actually better than just imap as it enables mail push. So instead of having to check mail every X minutes it's in permanent connection through activesync over data, and you simply receive mail as soon as it arrives on your gmail account.

oh! i didnt know that, do i have an "imap-like" function with it too even if using a non imap client such as "pop"? I mean are mails erased after syncing them to my mobile phone from server?
i ll go and start googling how to setup my mails through active sync ...
thanks for the hint!
hmm, no good finding in xda with google.
Kilrah, can you tell me where to set it up?
Its not the usual sync-email feature where you connect your phone to the connectivity center.
is it the "outlook" account when in email tab??
If yes, whats the server adress?
im confused )

Yes, works pretty much like imap.
Regarding how to choose for how many days it will display, it's still there, still at the same place. Don't forget to scroll the menu down

Wow, this rocks, thanks a lot.
One last off topic question. Where are the emails saved to and how can i change it if it is the main memory?
Ok... so I've recently migrated to Android after several years of WinMo Standard - Windows CE - 5.0 - 6.0 - 6.1 - 6.5.
So far I like Android and I love this phone... never had anything has fast or with such a great screen.
With that being said I'm having several issues that I wanted to run by the people here and see what ya'll thought.
Quick setup background - I have two email accounts I like to use - Gmail and Yahoo. I have all of my conacts in gmail organized the way I like it. Also, I recently gave up on using MS Outlook to manage my contacts and calendar and now use Gmail and Google Calendar to manage those two exclusively.
So here goes my impression/questions/issues - hoping someone can shed some light on it.
In the past with WinMo I could set up POutlook to sync with gmail/g-calendar/google contacts by configuring m.google.com as my activesync/exchange server. Everything seemed to work great. Now however I cannot decide if I should set up the accounts on the INC to sync via exchange or google.
So first question - when using HTC Mail and setting up my gmail account as an exchange server account is it "true" push?
If it is why would anyone want to use the gmail app?
Next - when I set my calendar to sync via exchange it randomly takes my entries and duplicates them on places the duplicate on the day before the original one. Any idea why? When I remove the active sync calendar and have it sync with my google account everything is correct... this is strange to me since its pulling the same data from the same place, my google calendar.
I'm sure I'll add more confusing and rambling thoughts after I continue to mess with this thing.
Thanks!
from my understanding the gmail is instant push and the htc mail app refreshes every 5 minutes (minimum). if this makes a difference to you then it should make your decision easier. hope this helps

i had issues with gmail not pushing properly when set up as an exchange account via HTC mail. other than the push issue, i consider the HTC app superior in every way.
I just set the HTC mail to manual, turn off the notifications to HTC mail. I set gmail it notification on, then every time gmail pushes in the mail I check it with the HTC mail. After I check it the notification goes away.
This way you can still use HTC mail without it waisting battery power every 5 minutes pull checking.
I just set the HTC mail to manual, turn off the notifications to HTC mail. I let gmail push it notification still on, then check it with the HTC mail. After I check it the notification goes away.

If you set up your gmail account as an exchange account using m.google.com you can get push by changing your check frequency to "as arrive".
The issue I'm having is that the HTC Mail application wont open any attachments from my gmail account set up through exchange. I just get a message "The file cannot be opened because it is corrupted."
If I open with the gmail application it works fine
As a regular Gmail user, I find the Android Gmail app is superior to the HTC mail app. It gives me the same features I have when using a computer... like marking a star on a conversation, viewing different labels, and since I have multiple email addresses that my Gmail account polls, the Gmail app lets me see which of my email addresses was the recipient. It's right there in the label on the email list, without having to open each mail and look at the address information.
If you don't use Gmail, or have multiple email addresses that AREN'T automatically polled by your Gmail account, I'd agree that HTC Mail is nice. But for me it takes away too many of the nice Gmail features that I use. My $.02

This doesn't push. It pulls. If you look closely you will see a refresh icon flash in your notification bar every 5 seconds. Extreme battery usage.
As far as opening up your attachments, set it for Imap. Its the only way I got it to work for attachments.

Gmail...
I found using the Gmail app and the HTC Mail separately, I was killing my battery faster.
What I ended up doing, was having GMail PULL my pop mail, and then I'd just pull it all through the gmail app. Helped my battery life a great deal.
Pro's - Everything in one place, Easy batch delete
Con's - I have to TELL it to load the entire message (Show Picture). In HTC I didn't have to do that.
Other than that, I'm happy to have everything centralized.
