New to the whole PUSH email stuff.... - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

So I am a bit confused. I am setting up Cingular Xpress mail which uses push technology like the blackberrys. What I am confused about is what exactly is push email. Is there a way for emails to get sent to my phone directly when they have been sent versus having to send/recieve everytime i want to get my email? Thanks.

Push email - Email is received on your device the very moment it gets sent to you from the "sender".
Standard email - You set up your device to receive email in increments of time (check every 15 minutes or 30 minutes, etc.)

Yes there is. That's exactly what push email does. Cingular Xpress is a good cheap way to go about that too.
That's just a really simple explanation. Does that clear it up a little?

Thank you. that clears it up... however when using xpress mail from cingular, it doesn't automatically show me my emails. I use the "other pop" option to try and get it running with xpress mail. But once again it only gives me my new mail when I say "send/receive" I know my email client for school supports imap idle so does that mean I need to setup xpress mail for an IMAP account? I am just using hte xpress mail setup on the phone and not the personal edition that requires a running desktop. Thanks.

I don't know much about this but heres my attempt to help:
push email is using activesync as far as I know... So i think the answer is, youre using both
I have tried two varieties of "push mail", the sms based one (asks you to provide an email address for alerts, the exchange server sends alert-emails to this address and they are converted to sms messages by your gsm provider, and are then sent to your phone. When the phone gets the sms, it connects to gprs unless youre already connected to the internet, and it retrieves the email, (and it doesn't show you the sms message)). This one was expensive (when it worked) and very unreliable (my gsm providers "mailtosms" service is absolutely rubbish)
Then theres the AKU2 push email - the real push email (which requires an active gprs (data) connection. The exchange server uses this connection to tell your phone that you have new email, and activesync then syncs the exchange account. Very similar, but usually cheaper, since gprs traffic costs less than an sms usually. You can start/stop this one by using "comm manager" on your phone.) I just started using this one today with a free mail2web.com account
I tried sending myself a message. Within a minute it beeped in my phone.
I then tried sending myself another message. Within a minute it beeped in my phone again. Since it received two messages in about two minutes, i concluded that the mail was pushed to my phone, and not retrieved at regular intervals (the shortest interval in activesync is 5 mins).

Real simple. Make sure your handset is not hooked up to your PC. Add a calendar item in Outlook on your PC. Within a couple of minutes Activesync will auto-start on your handset, and the new calendar item should arrive.
With SMS alerts, you only get auto-starts on AS when a new email arrives.

Tremendous help, thanks guys!

auto send/recieve after a set time?

is there anyway to get my wizard to automatically send and recieve (via gprs) on my new hotmail messages every say 20 mins?

Yep standard feature. Look in the manual.
Not true. For hotmail, there is no preset send/receive period - only POP/IMAP accounts support this. There must be another way.

Cant you sign up for pop3 with hotmail ?
can you?
i want to use an existing account. the only thing i can think of the msn service of a text everytime i get a new email. but thats obviously fairly useless.

Synchronising emails

Is it possible to change the function of the Send / Receive button (on the e-mail manila tab) so that it synchronises ALL of the e-mail accounts you have on your phone?
Bump for help. Surely this should be possible. It is pretty pointless to have to select each mailbox and press Send/Receive for each one
I was thinking this too, I would love a button that synced both my accounts. Surely for someone that knows what they are doing this would be quite easy?

Also interested. Anyone?
Isn't syncing emails a bit old fashion?
I find the battery on the HD is fine to use push email (constant connection) so you get your emails immediately.
I use www.seven.com (their beta program which is free)
This converts any imap, pop3, gmail, works exchange server (emails, contacts, calendar), etc email into push email.

How do you find this with data costs etc. Do you ever go above your monthly limit etc?
Don't really need any new solutions. Personally giving my details to a third party so they can send me the emails as I receive them doesn't appeal to me. If I receive an email a couple of hours late, not harm will be done
Still no updates on the original post?
I just set my emails to download every 30 mins and push email for Exchange.
Why is it so hard to push send/recieve if you want it for each account. How many email accounts do you need to have? I have 4 - its not big deal.

I have 6
The reason I need it is because I don't use data in Bahrain or Cyprus, so I update e-mails via WiFi
hi, sorry!
i have a question here.
i have three accounts from MS.
1 live.com 1 msn.com 1 hotmail.com
How can I set them up in the BS?
I can only receive/send one account at one time by signing the Windows live messenger and selecting to synchronize email.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

PUSH for htc mail?

I think the original Gmail application has push, but it doesn't work well with the Hero's leds. HTC mail works well with leds but it doesn't have push.
Any idea?
K-9 Mail Beta has push with IMAP IDLE. I'm using the Beta but I think they are close to doing a market build that incorporates the new push code. The green LED flashes when you have mail (in addition to an audible alert, etc.).
Thanks for K-9 app, but I guess the orginal Gmail also has green led flashing, but the trackpoint's led doesn't flash.

It's the server end that "pushes", and HTC Mail does support push email using MS Exchange sync. Gmail now supports this protocol too, so you can have you Gmail "pushed" into the HTC mail app if you wish.

Dave

Thanks Dave I'll give it a try.
Alright, I didn't know this. I'll give it a try too, and report it back! Thanks!
Hi, it's still the same. No PUSH in ActiveSync. I sent an email from one account to my Gmail. After 10 mins, I didn't see any notification. I get the email when I do it manually or wait for 15 mins (as in the send/receive setting)
Any idea?

I use Exchange to sync all of my mails, contacts, calendar appointments with my Hero.
I have my sync settings set to check every five minutes and any new messages etc do come through every 5 minutes. If I was to set it to 'As Items Arrive', mails come through in seconds.
Push works for me.

So you didn't change your send/receive settings "As items arrive"?
Regards,
Dave
I used to have the sync settings set to As Items Arrive and it worked perfectly. I've changed to sync every 5 mins purely to get a little extra battery life out of my phone.
My Hero is currently pinging away every five minutes with emails from XDA Developers with email updates on the threads I'm subscribed to.
Thanks! it's sloved!

Will HD2 US do aol / yahoo push mail? I've looked at the manual and no mention?

I've looked all over..and can't find a section that mentions push mail from yahoo, aol, etc.
I'm coming from the iPhone so the push mail works on the Yahoo side and I believe on the aol side.
I know that MS exchange has push feature to the phone but what about the other standards? gmail?
I noticed on Cookies HT there is a push mail icon but that did not work (i take it that's for ms direct push?)
Lastly...is there a setting or app that allows ALL mail to send / receive vs just doing one account at a time (annoying)?
Thank you!
the microsoft direct push functionality (supported on ALL windows mobile devices in at least the past 3-4 years) works with ANY microsoft exchange server.
this means it will work for gmail (i am using it myself!) because google has the exchange server on their end. google itself provides a generic windows mobile tutorial on how to set it up and you can find a video guide on youtube specifically on how to set it up on a stock HD2 (technique should work on custom ROMs too). my only additional advice is to back up your contacts (either to microsoft myphone or using pimbackup) before proceeding because the google sync can also upload your contacts to google, and you don't want your contacts to get nuked in case something goes wrong during the initial sync. another potential confusion you might face is that you will see the labels set up on gmail as folders on your device's client. by default, syncing of folders is disabled, but you can go into "manage folders" under one of the menus when viewing your inbox on the device to pick the folders that you want to sync in addition to the inbox. finally, the first sync may take several minutes (even an hour) depending on the duration you have set up to sync (i use a setting for last one month worth of emails) and on your connection speed (try to use wifi for the first sync).
i don't know about yahoo or aol but if they support the microsoft exchange server on their side, then push email should theoretically work in these cases also.
all in all, i rather like the functionality because it is highly configurable. you can even set up "schedules" such that it works in push mode on, say, weekdays from noon to midnight and switch to, say, 4 hour poll mode while you are sleeping.
then again, i haven't experienced push email on any other device such as the black berry or iphone so my view point is rather limited.
Simply put yes. I have yahoo pop3 servive and get my yahoo mail just fine on the HD2

pop3 in "poll mode" is different from push email, which is what the OP was asking about.
however, for most practical purposes, pop3/imap in quick poll mode (like once every 5 minutes) is really not that bad, but it might adversely affect battery life.
i suppose poll mode is fine for most of us but some individuals/businessmen might rely on quick email delivery straight to their phone so its more logical to consider poll vs push as two separate technologies in discussions!
Do the folders selected to be sync with inbox will sync automatically?

Hi,
I was searching for this and thank you for letting me know how to do it! I didn't know there is a "manage folders" option until I scroll down (Din knew I can scroll down, lol)
By the way, as mentioned above, do the folders selected sync automatically? Will they appear on the mail tab?
Thank you.

you can create an exchange account using your gmail login,if you have it,otherwise you can create a new gmail account and use it for send/receive your mail in push:in gmail web page you must add your yahoo account for check and than configure the exchange as i explane!
pop3 is NOT push. There is a delay. Depends on when you have it checking.
As far as i know, the default windows mobile does NOT support push email for yahoo. If you want push email, use seven like i did. Worked fine on my hd2.
http://community.seven.com/main.php
It will allow push email from yahoo and many others. It is NOT an email app where you read them in seven, but a tool to push it to your phones normal email program. (what you would be using now)
I have been using it for a long time and had no problem.
