Dear Eris Users who Are Waiting for Root,
I'd like to start by addressing all of you as a large audience. I may ask certain groups to leave. I hope they will respect that wish and then come back and join the larger group when I am done with each piece.
We all got the Droid Eris from Verizon. We all got it for different reasons. A lot of you, if not all of you, are here because you wanted an HTC phone that was rooted. You wanted the custom roms, the themes, the su privileges. This shining aura that was "root" was so appealing, that you took a plunge and bought the device before any work was really done on that. Now, some of you feel that you should receive, neigh, deserve root. I am so saddened by what this community, Eris users, not XDA, has turned into. The disbelievers, the demanders; what are you still doing here, complaining? Just leave if you have something mean to say.
To everyone: I'm a firm believer in the idea that if you don't have something important, information wise/helpful, to say on the forum, then don't post at all. I try to keep my fingers off the keyboard, and I have for a long time, but I cannot hold my silence. I used to post every day. I used to be excited to get onto XDA and see if something new had happened while I was away. When we got our own section of the forum, I was overjoyed! (Not really, but we needed a section) We had a pristine new subforum to play around in, and we trashed it. Our original root thread had to be closed because of how off topic and ridiculous it was. Our new thread has gone to crap and turned more into a flame war, than a place where we are looking for exploits and posting findings. Sadly, I wouldn't blame XDA for shutting that one down too. We, as a whole, have alienated developers and are now in danger of not getting root for a number of reasons.
No one deserves root, just like no one deserves $20 from a random stranger. Sure, it'd be nice to get it, but no one deserves it. We should all be thankful for the man hours that people have put in, for no money, to try and give us $20 a piece... I mean root this thing. Seriously, it's a community, not a business. Also, those who feel like it's not worth it to wait around, just leave. Don't make an exit if you're sitting around and not helping but you feel the need to announce that you are fed up, or tired of it. Root will come eventually. There has yet to be an android phone that hasn't been hacked, and we will not be the first one.
Lastly, I'm tired of the "HTC NEEDS to release the source code because it's our right to have it" argument. Sure, the source would help, but the iPhone has been hacked again and again and again with no source code. It comes down to good developers, and a thankful community. So, please stop riding that bandwagon. The source code will get here eventually, but you have to be patient.
To those of you who have been helpful: Thank you. To anyone who tried an exploit and posted findings, thank you. To anyone who compiled an exploit, who dumped their phone, who offered help, incite, or even a "keep it up", thank you. That's what a good hacking community does.
To Jmanly, Binny, Zifnab, rigamrts and others: Thank you for everything you've done to help us out. You are all a tribute to being a good forum member. We would not even be a fraction of where we are without Jmanly's guidance and it was sad to see him leave.
Where to go from here: I think we need to restart. Create a new thread where no negative talk will occur, people will only post things that help move us forward and people post their thanks to those who are doing all of us a favor. None of us deserve root. It's not owed to us because we got the phone. We should all be thankful for what some people with the know-how are doing for us. That should be all I have to say. I hope we can change a little bit for the better and maybe we can get back to trying to root.

Well said!
This is well put.
I can never quite understand the flaming or negative stuff.
I learned when I started out in WinMo Xperia Threads that people hassling or acting "Entitled" while you are working hard on a Mod or Rom or anything can be quite disheartening.
If it can be agreed upon, I would like to open a new thread, for root status and updates. (hopefully for the last time)
Or I can just add it to the bounty thread that is already open (I know and understand that most of us do this for the love of hacking and modding and out of a sense of community, but it is also a nice gesture and could really help someone that devotes time and effort to this)???
I would monitor it constantly and report any flaming and abuse to one of our great moderators immediatley.
What do you think?
here's how i felt when i first got my eris.
i was like great now i can see what's up and possibly help get root for the new addopters cause i did not get my g1 durring the first run. i missed out on the fun times of all the posts of people trying to hack the phone.
so when i first landed in the eris waters it was great the late night whiteboard sessions were fun throwing any idea no matter how idiotic it sounded and going to town. then we had our first 2 casualties jman and me cause some one took it apon himself to attack a guy who didn't even have our phone and was willing to help.
then we had today where that same person took it on himself to flame another dev the same way. now the 7 day ban might calm him down or send the message not to come back. but i thought it sould have been a perma-ban cause of past actions plus the disrespecting of a mod which is a no no. that mod i respect cause he acted profesionally and gave the community hope that this type of behavior will not be tollorated.
hopefully if things keep going in a positive direction i might jump back into fold but feel very heartbroken cause of the few bad apples.
Awesome post
as acid said, very well put.
i too never understood why not just in the "eris" section but yet in any section people have demanded such items to be released.
I agree with rigamrts, I have watched this board with aw in some of the things people have said to one another. If I had root to this phone I would P.M. the members I wanted to have it just to keep out the ones that act childish. But then wouldn't I be just as childish? So I would just stop, Do my own thing, and wait as a few of the people here have done. People with no interest in this device have nothing to lose by leaving besides maybe hearing their friend saying "come on man, come back. We won't let that happen again." Its a shame this happened in our community but as with the physical community I live in there are jerks. People that you wish would leave on their own accord but stick around with T.P. stuck to their shoes looking like idiots. Anyways, thanks for the help, keep working, and feel free to leave if things get retarded again. I would do the same.
I think it would be cool if everyone who was interested in CONTRIBUTING to the root, whether that be via coding, finding exploits, packing these things/making user friendly tutorials, could form, basically, a Dev team. They/we could have a blog, a place where they/we can get together and chat amongst ourselves about ideas and whatever. Hopefully, then, we could have a more concrete group of people WORKING TOGETHER to achieve this one goal.
If any of the people working on root are down for it, let's make it happen. Cool? Cool. Cool? Cool.

i could create a bolg on one of my unused email account
I think that moving the thread to the new one should work..
We have a couple of moderators all over this now..
And I can update everyday
I need you guys to update me on what to put im the 1st post so that we can get back on track
I think the blog is a great idea but the thing is we also need to keep the discussion here at XDA, the place that originally got us together. If we don't keep the support here we won't have a well known place to meet new Eris users that could potentially help. We can't do that because of one bad apple, this Is our meeting place and we need to show XDA the respect by continuing to trust their mods to do their jobs. Ya that guy should have been permanently banned but he wasn't so let's not punish XDA for that decision. My two pennies.
I agree that we need to hang out at XDA, but I also feel that we could move to somewhere where we can bounce around ideas without people hijacking threads or starting flame wars. I'm not trying to keep people in the dark, I just want to try a different place. Oh, and I'd like some people who know what they're doing to sign on. I'm just a visionary, I can't code. Haha
Ok guys here is the deal after what happend today I am a little upset I spend hours each day searching the web for exploits, why... to help. Here is what I may do, I might buy some webspace and set up a area for us to work together on. I am going to see if Jman will will join us, this is just a idea for right now. I will let you guys know when I clear my head.
Aren't there free blogs? Let's not throw money at this quite yet.
Oh, and I'm sorry you got upset with some people and also that I haven't been here in, well, a month or more. I thought the community was going stagnate. I'm here to stay and, like you, I'll be scrounging for exploits and doing my best to help those with the know-how by doing the leg work if they do the real work.
Free yes but I would like some were were we can upload files to and what not. Just a idea for right now.
Clear ur head man...take care
When ya come back.head over to the new no flaming thread

Well I have the pro programs for Mac and Windows to make killer video tuts, so once we have this thing rooted, I can get that out of the way.
Oh and I can host web space for you too on my server, I just don't have any domains to run the site on. You could use your ways to get a domain. (Try shorturl.com that's what I use for most of my websites.)
Questions to [email protected].

Video I can agree where you are comming from, it does suck the fun out of the puzzle of rooting the device with all the flaming and demanding. But on the other side where I am, I am not a programmer or a linux genius. So we almost feel like leechers taking your work with out compensation for it. So the Pool for the dev that roots the Eris is our attempt to do our part in the give take relationship we have in this community.
Sure I could spend hours and hours and hope to get where you guys are or I can offer my monitary thanks for all your work.
I am not trying to point this thread in the wrong direction and I don't want to see a bunch of "I agree" replies. Just want to convey our side, the noobs and amatures that can't do the things that you do.
I am waiting patiently and if there is anything we the non-dev's can do let us know.

Thanks and hope to see you then.
This thread will remain closed until the specified time.
First of all, I wanted to welcome all of you and thank you for taking the time to put all the remaining issues to rest. As with anything on this site, please be courteous to others, don't flame, don't curse, and try to make your comments as meaningful as possible (in other words, don't troll )
This is a floor for discussion and debate, so whoever feels like speaking up, please do so. I believe that the first order of business is the fixxxer issue. Cbarlan (aka Papa_Smurf) already put me up to speed on that issue but I would like to have some more input from you all.
The only thing i will add to this is im tired of being accused and followed around here because im new, same goes for other newbies as well. This smixxxer guy is obviously a banned member and keeps signing up to stir up trouble. I know i accused neb of being him and i talked to a few members who told me it was not, so for that i humbly apologize. I firmly believe once someone is banned from here, they should stay banned. Id just like to see people start getting along more. In my mind fixxxer is talked about than the hero itself, he's not here anymore and the subject needs to end already.
Thats all id like to add to this as i have to go.
For me, personally, most of what I had issue with has been resolved, both through a bit more leniency from the mods (thanks you guys!), and the creation of the off-topic thread for us to blow off steam in.
Re: fixxer/nebs situation, I am prolly too biased on this to give much of an objective opinion. That being said, if nebs and fixxer are both willing to cool the vitriol a bit, I see no reason to keep the bans up. Others may feel differently, but that is where I stand.
Ban his IP. /End Game
EDIT:
I'll edit this by saying I know the IP thing is useless. Not much you can do other than watch out for the trolls.

which his? smixxer?
I think it's just unfortunate there are such easy ways to get around a ban.
FYI and FWIW- I have not created any identities on this site other than this one and phenicks.
I am done with fixxxer even though he is obviously still here. I hope he can begin to grow up a little and stop fueling "the fire".
Without the ability to reliably ban someone from simply making a new login ID I would like to suggest the following as food for thought:
To help cut down on banned members coming right back to start more crap:
-2 to 4 week period before new members can post AND/OR
-2 to 4 week post (not read) restriction to general/q&a sections for new members
To help cut down on redundant and misplaced threads by noobs:
-20/30 post minimum before new members can make a new thread
To help clarify who is actually a senior member:
-500 posts to earn senior member status
(It can be confusing for a noob who to direct questions to, also I have seen as high as 32 posts/day counts.. senior member in 3-4 days?)
-neb
PS.
Thank you for the off topic lounge, that one is a home-run
And thank you to Egz and Ryan and other mods for your involvement lately. I for one am delighted to see the member side of you guys rather than just the moderator side.

Neb buddy, are you refering to me?
I agree completely here. On several forums I have been on in the past there is a minimum reply number to current posts before you can start a new thread. This would stop the "Im new and don't wanna read" and also would prevent people from being banned and being able to go start a new account and have just as much going as they did before.

Hahaha, J/K of course
Also, I think its great that this place is such a fantastic resource and I think it's great that many of the senior members have the patience to answer questions that come in the form of brand new threads in the wrong sections.
I'd like to see people (senior members) get more comfortable with prefacing their responses to these threads with "This should have gone <here>". I am not suggesting we don't answer these questions, I would just like to see some diligence guiding new people to post in the appropriate section. Lots of these kinds of threads get answered and it's not until half way down the page until someone acknowledges the thread was posted is in the wrong section. Not that its a heinous offense or anything but I think most would agree new threads in the wrong sections are inconvenient and happen A LOT.

I believe the creation of the off subject lounge and leniency of the mods have made a huge difference. With that being said I believe that being respectful by both mods and users will greatly help. Yeah I know things get out of hand at times and that the mods get tired of hearing a million reports on this section. But commingle in here with an iron fist and then trying to sweep it under the rug hoping it will go away will never work. Getting to the root of the issue is a lot more effective and trying to resolve the problem out weighs bannings. I've said this in the past banning is almost a joke. Anyone can make a sock puppet account and keep causing problems. So what doea is solve.
To the users who r act like natzis...the mods will decide if a subject goes into a different section. Either contribute to the thread or shut up. I'm so tired of someone ask a question or post a thread and watch the wave of senior members (a select few all the time) say this should go to this section. Is it that hard to answer the question or post a link to the answer (this goes for the whole use the search button also). Sometimes when u search for an answer there r so many results and it shows all result including from first day forum started and some of those are way out of date and a noob isn't as experienced enough to sort through what newer and what's older.

Hey neb,
For once, welcome back! I am glad that you guys are putting this whole thing behind. For the last few days, I have felt that things have really began to calm down in here (particularly because we don't see that many reported posts/threads from here anymore). I will take your suggestions to the site admin and the other mods and see what they think. Some of them can be a bit hard to implement (particularly the first two), but the other ones, I couldn't agree more (especially on the Senior Member threshold, I agree that 100 posts is just way too little). In fact, I invited the other mods and admin over here as well, so they might up in during the day as well. This thread is guaranteed to have exposure to everyone that needs to see it

Agreed that searching can easily and often be a fruitless PITA.
As far as the response.. "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all" (right?, lol)
I am not one to bust someones head for posting in the wrong section. I will sooner ignore the question.
I don't see any harm in telling someone they have posted in the wrong section but I think it would be great to see those types of comments accompanied by some sort of helpful reply.

Ya know, I woud like to see guys from other devices in here as well. These changes being propsed aren't just relevant to CDMA Hero's. Post Count and status should effect the whole site.
To make XDA better as a whole and to maintain it's "Developers" status so to speak, you have to quiet the people asking basic questions some times.
Personally I am not good at training, I don't want to have to teach someone how to dial there phone

yeah, it took me no time at all to hit senior member status, and I don't post nearly as often as some (some of you may have a hard time believing this, but i'm still averaging less than a post a day. I like to think mine are just....memorable ). Though it might add more work, it might be useful to have 3 membership types instead of 2. I mean, I can TOTALLY see needing to be around for a while before you get your senior badge, I don't think it is necessary to make a dude wait till he has 500 posts to put up a link, you know what I mean?
EDIT: w00t! I lied! I just hit avg 1.05 posts per day!

Hey cb, I mean Papa
Love the new avatar... I guess now I understand why you wanted your name changed . Moving threads for us is a bit of a nuisance, but it has to be done so that important sub forums don't get flooded by a bunch of "asking for help" or "what do you guys think its better x or y" threads, none of which are exclusive to noobs, but some seniors as well.
The way I usually handle (or at least I used to handle when I was a regular member) the out of place threads, was normally to direct towards a solution and used the "Report" icon on the thread/post to get a mod to either move it or delete it, if needed be. People who just flat out burst into flaming or insulting the member asking the question are simply out of place and should not do that. However, I have learned over the years that many people on the internet (not only here) would much rather write a long rant on how someone should google before asking questions, than to simply say "here is the link" and pressing the report button saying "please move to x y z section"... I guess it is a culture thing...

I can agree with that but there are a select few that r like section police. Every thread that's in the wrong section they r there to let them know and that's all they contribute. I find myself reading them say that going douche just answer the question or ignore it. That's just ne though
I like LMGTFY, it gets the point across, but is helpful at the same time. Some folks get offended, but most get the point and say thanks.
edit: not to derail the thread, but a lot of people don't know HOW to search properly. It ain't enough to just plug a bunch of words in the text box and hit the button. A lot of us grew up in the pregooglenet dark ages, when searching wasn't nearly as easy, and have skills that these young whippersnappers do not posess.

The fact that your post are memorable rather than "fillers" is a good thing (I wish more people would do that)
We have 3 levels of membership:
Junior member (up to 10 or 30 posts, I cannot remember this one)
Member (up to 100 posts)
Senior member (anything over 100 posts)
I will ask the admin about moving senior and junior levels up, because I honestly think that those are the important ones.

Ok first I'm posting this in every forum so that everyone sees it because I personally think its important for the future of this forum.
Seriously people just because you have anonymity behind your user name doesn't give you the right to be rude. Stop jumping on a post and yelling at the poster, if the moderators have a problem they will move the post you are not the police and all you are doing in potentially scaring off help!!! Which correct me if I'm wrong a development, q/a, etc forum is DEPENDENT on.
I for one have been taken aback and offended by some of the blatant rudeness on these forums.
We never know who is new or who is posting something. What if a HTC dev was posting a question with the intent to leak info to us and you blasted him like many of you have because he posted the wrong thing in the wrong place? Do you think he would want to help after that? Or what if someone who was posting a question also happened to be at HTC legal or Sprint and got pissed enough to force all our nice developers to stop using anything HTC with a cease order (which they can legally do whenever they want) all because of some rude poster.
Please people be responsible and think before you speak the world and this forum will be better for it.
LOL, but I see what your saying. But it did get funny at the end. But uh, yeah, easier to just ignore, or politely direct someone. And nothing is more worthless than 50 people saying the same thing blasting someone like the other 49 people weren't. Pages of wasted page space. But hey, that's the internet for ya.
I always find this logic hilarious. There are only a handful of moderators and they have their own lives to deal with. A good community polices itself and rarely needs an external entity to step in. And since when is telling people to to post in the correct forum "yelling" at them? Am I yelling at you right now because I disagree with you? Do you think everyone who disagrees with you is yelling at you?
It is ironic that you are complaining about this chasing away people. In my experience, every valuable tech forum has either strong moderation or a strong self policing community. The useless ones are the ones where no one cares and the signal to noise ratio is nil. Junk posts and idiots chase away the valuable people, not because they are fragile little snowflakes like you seem to think, but because they don't like their time to be wasted.
Oh, and this doesn't belong in this forum. It belongs in Off Topic and needs a descriptive title.
Did you try search? This has been posted before.
Just kidding. It is annoying. I just imagine them as being a bunch of nerdy kids who jump at the chance to tell someone to use search or wrong forum with nothing else to contribute to the community.
They remind me of the hall monitors in grade school.
Yes and No
The problem with your theory is the same that happened in the old west, no consolidated power = abuse. If everyone is a "cop" then so are the brats and jerks. Your well thought out answer is not yelling, but the rude blasts from people like drumdude are.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740261
Do you believe that someone who is acting like that is acceptable in this forum?
And I'm not talking about the 70th time a post asking the same question goes up, but why not teach someone how to search, or even giving them a link to the information they need? You assume that the poster is a techie and should know forum edicate, yet we all had to learn at some time and when I did years ago people were kind enough to teach without pushing.
And at the same time when it came time for me to root, there were way to many posts full of non-information. While I knew what I was doing someone that didn't would have easily been overwhelmed. I'm a tech guy who is getting his Masters in Community Counseling and the overwhelming negativity from the internet is a major area of concern for us, as it is not producing positive results for "in real life" interactions. We need more cooperation if this nation is to stay competitive not a bunch of individuals who learned their people skills in these environments. Yes I'm bring to the front personal responsibilities to teach when you can, help whenever possible etc. Deal with it
Toast has enough to deal with. Have you seen how many posts get moved?
I wish that they would use the ban hammer here like they did in the WinMo forums... People would learn fast.

Couldn't have said it better.LOL. I agree with the OP. Posting "use search" or "wrong forum" is completely pointless. I will admit it gets a bit irritating when you see a thread asking a question when the answer to it is two threads up, but I'm not gonna get all fired up about it. Most of the trolls here are cluttering up the forum as much as the people they're flaming. Hypocrites are ANNOYING! Make positive or constructive posts or don't post at all.

Another rant thread, I totally agree with you, but just as noobs wont ever use search, people wont ever stop trollin so I suggest get used to it because its inevitable. No use fighting just dont be that person.
Look, I get that SamsungJohn is trying to open the lines of communication. Here's the problem, he's not giving anything back. If you want to know how we all feel, just read the boards, I think you'll get the point. Ergo, why you showed up here John. You guys have already read the boards, you know what our complaints and desires are. So, you really have only two options at this point. Since you've already outed Samsung for monitoring the XDA boards (by showing up here in the frst place), you can:
1. Continue the "what, who, me?!?" routine and waste our (and your own time)
or
2. Tell us the truth about our concerns
SPOILER ALERT: *****Choosing option one will remove customers from your current base. Choosing option two, while it may not increase your customer base, may have an effect on your word of mouth advertising (which will probably have an effect on your Tab 10.1 sales versus the Xoom [FYI and unrelated, leaving USB off the 10.1 was a seriously bad idea]).*****
Just food for thought from a long time lurker here.
i Don't think he's here to listen to people b*tch and moan every minute...
Im pretty sure he'll be communicating with the Devs.
so please post this in another thread thats saying/implying the same thing..
Wasn't my intent to b*tch or moan. I just wanted to convey a message I keep reading in a clear, non-emotionally intense manner.
If the intent was simply Dev comms, why open up to the whole community? Why not just keep it to Gtalk?
Didn't post for a flame war, I am just as personally invested in this as everyone else who owns an Epic. I would simply like John to understand that asking us for our questions is a bit rhetorical, as they are already laid out in the boards themselves. The way out of this is to communicate real pieces of useful information to the user base.
I feel xda should atleast give ppl an idea of whats going on.. if its confidential etc ppl understand.. without saying what happened, who approached whom, whats this stupid phase 1, phase 2.. theres so much speculation and anger around it.
either samsungjohn or xda mod (whoever it be) should just come forward..explain the whole thing saying.. this is what happened and this is the roadmap .. and stick to those days.. this way .. ppl will understand what to expect and when.
just my 2 cents
Wait, you think your thread on this got deleted, so you posted it AGAIN???
Yeah, sorry I usually RTFM the FAQ, but I have always jusk lurked here, never posted until recently. Did I voilate an XDA ettiqette rule? Sorry if I did. I figured either it got deleted or I hit cancel instead of submit (but I edited the original due to a grammar error, so that's why I assumed it was deleted). I never had any intent on bashing anyone, just wanted to re-articulate what I see so many people trying to express and I personally feel.

Thank you to all who have helped me over the years on XDA. And thank you to all the DEVs for your hard work and efforts. I will be leaving the community indefinitely just as soon as @MikeChannon receives and processes my request for full account removal. Many of you have been great and a few of you have not. Those few unfortunately have outweighed the many. Incessant *****ing and rude behavior have played a major role in this decision. XDA is not what it used to be, and while I'd like to say it is getting better, it is not. The current internet generation of "give me give me give because I'm entitled" is just downright unpleasant. All links, and contributions that have been shared by me site wide over the years are now inactive. I wish you all the best in your Android endeavors.
Only way to stay afloat is to ignore the negative n annoying.
It sometimes seems like it's the majority.. but there are some good users out there.. just like you. Sad to see you go.. would like you stay (but I get it).

Thank you for your hard work! Sending you positive vibes on your future endeavors!!! :good:
I understand your decision, but i don't understand why make all your post contributions inactive. Doesn't make sense to me. I don't know what your did before but I assume it was very helpful. If so, why not just let it be for other good people that will need help? Your decision of course. Good luck!
I have been digging in your posted threads and i see you have many threads started. Im sure many of them are helpful to others. I might not be a developer myself (yet) however, every time i see people complaining as if developers have to actually please them, I would really love that xda give them a suspension between 1 week and 6 months, in extreme case 1 year or indefinitely. One thing is to complain, and another is to let know to the developers about bugs, or problems or request or similar things in a respectful way. I, and i m sure many others, will be sorry to see you go. Of course, it's your decision to make. Best wishes
So... I have received a reply from Mike and have read the posts here about my departure... because of select members here and Mike's reply to me, I will not be leaving XDA. I take offense when people don't respect the community and it's contributors. I've been a long time member here and have seen many changes on these forums... Some of them have been great, but quite a few have not. I still feel this place is quickly being over run by "whining entitled gimme gimme's" but moving forward, I will not allow that to bother me (as much). Lastly... Thank you to those who spoke up when I made the decision to leave... It's because of you that I am staying... It shows me that there is indeed still some good people left here. I have also opened up the things that have been shared again... So if anyone has an issue with a link, let me know, and I'll edit the post to correct it. In closing...Mods, you can now lock this thread if you wish.

Glad to read this. If the thought re-emerges again. Just remember that the world has a balance. You will find good people, and you will find bad people. And XDA is not an exception to this (THE LAW OF BALANCE). Just try to ignore the beggars that seem to be too unreasonable and reckless. But also, try to sympathize with those which have a problem and at their best behavior are trying to explain the problem so the devs can solve them. Of course, Always remembering that You have the right to be "selective" of what you want to do or not. :good: :good: :good:

I've been around for a long long time. XDA for the most part has provided enthusiasts and developers a means to do things they otherwise wouldn't have the ability to do which is share information and maybe get some recognition for it. The "new" people who have flocked here have made things a bit more annoying, but its just the nature of most things as they become more mainstream. (We are all hipsters) It was a whole lot worse when android was first released.
Thread closed as per OP request.
