How can I brick my Magic? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi guys,
I've been stalking these forums for a while and tried out many things on my phone. I've been flashing many many roms and doing a lot of edits to them afterward.
Now I want to see if I can build a rom. I've been trying to build AOSP for Magic for a few weeks but failing. I thought since Dream roms can be ported to Magic, I may as well just make it for Dream and try to port rather than build for Magic. That's what I plan to try next.
I'd also like to try porting a system dump to see if I can get one of those to at least boot up.
The trouble is, I don't exactly want to brick my phone. So what are the common ways to brick the phone, which I should avoid? I'm particularly worried about the boot image, since I guess if this goes wrong it will lead to a brick for sure. Also is there a way I can make my phone more resilient to bricking? Someone told me changing to Engineering SPL would make it "unbrickable" because you can always get into recovery or something. Right now I am running stock SPL. I have never changed it from the HBOOT-1.22.0004 that it shipped with. I've read around on SPL but to be honest I still don't really know what the difference is.
How safe would it be for me to try my AOSP build (assuming I ever manage to create one)?
Just looking for some advice here. I'll gladly take any you have to offer.

There are ENDLESS threads about phones being bricked on here. Use the search feature!! Or maybe you can click on the link that I made about my phone being bricked. The thread is literally right next to yours!

But seriously, I have no idea about the specifics as to what EXACTLY causes a bricked phone. Installing an unsupported spl/rom/bootimg will most likely be a culprit. If you get a repeating splash screen then you don't need to worry too much since that could easily be fixed.

very confused....

hey,
in advance, sorry about that if this is a serious noob question. i searched and i read numerous threads but i'm still really confused.
basically, i'm getting a wizard at christmas, which has WM5 on it. I've had little look around, and the general (and somewhat obvious) concensus is that WM6 (or WWE or whatever) is way better. I'm really confused about the whole G3 G4 thing and the whole updating ROM things. I've read guides/tutorials and looked at a load of the Wiki stuff, but i'm still really confused.
Is it possible that someone might give me a bit of a really broken down idea (not step-by-step tutorial) as to updating the phone from WM5 to WM6. Like what is involved? length of time taken? what essentially i need to do? etc. If people can tell me what to update etc, like the radio thing and such, i'm more than happy to search for the guides and tutorials on this forum. the guides are excellently done and very easy to follow, but i'm still lost about what means what?
thanks,
t
Damned Noobs!
Ok, the for idiots version (don't worry, I once needed the for idiots version too)--
G3 Wizard= when you boot the phone and get a bunch of numbers on the initial screen it will say x.xx
G4 Wizard= x.xx.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (joking, but it will have more decimals!)
The radio depends on location...I'm in Cali, I run 2.47 with the fix cab and have no issues...however...2.19 IS the recommended radio for the WM6 roms.
THERE IS NO SINGLE BEST ROM!! They all rock. The kitchen you choose is based on what fits YOU. I run Jaguar, I love it. But I like minimal apps, but not a vanilla rom. Read each kitchen posting carefully. Some come with all kinds of bells and whistles, some are minimal, some are really vanilla! Read what the bugs are, and if fixes have been posted.
Read Dr.P's tutorial at least 3 times on unlocking your Wiz (it is stickied).
You will want a few "must have" apps. Search lokiwiz, wst, and maybe even omap clock. Once CID/SIM unlocked, always unlocked. But before you flash a cooked rom, YOU MUST BE CID/SIM UNLOCKED!
When you flash a rom, you are not freeballing with your jacket open...flashing your rom simply means switching it out. It is recommended to flash back to a stock rom before trying out a new kitchen. This keeps the new install fresh and clean. Search for the stock rom. The search button is your friend. A lot of folks use the Tmo 2.26 stock rom.
And finally, invest in Sprite backup or a similar app. It makes things so much easier if you fubar ****. So always back your Wizard up.
And again, remember, read the wiki's and stickies until your eyes bleed. It is always best to know your device before playing around with it. What mods you do, you do at your own risk!
And an FYI, I don't honestly know if WM6 is better than WM5, but as the WM6's are all custom kitchens, they are a hell of a lot more fun!!
PS- the longest time taken is always in the initial modding. You MUST unlock your phone first...that will take a good 20 minutes at least. A typical rom flash takes roughly 10 minutes. A radio only flash takes 3 minutes...once you have done the initial work...you will find that if you want to change roms, you'll need to devote a whole 20 minutes---flash a stock rom, then flash a custom creation.

i'm sorry man but if u bricked ur phone, there's really no way back..
sorry to hear that.. ='(
If you flash an incorrect rom then it is bricked and no way to restore it, sorry.
This is why I state in BIG letters over and over to make absolutely sure you are flashing the correct rom on a 1024LEO.
Only thing you can really do is take it back and ask for a replacement if its still within the first few weeks of owning it.
Mark.
Thank you for all the reply. I bought it right on the launch day. I will try to bring it back to tmobile.

This is becoming a common theme and to be honest, it's very easy for a rookie to make this type of mistake as we're seeing over and over again. There needs to be more of a clear standard for labeling these threads for the US HD2 where mistakes can easily be made. Looking through the titles of the threads, you'll see ROMs labeled...
TMOUS
TMOU
T-MOBILE
T-MOB
US TMob
US HD2
There just seems to be a lot of work put into making these ROMs which we are all extremely grateful for, but not much effort into making sure people are clear which ROM needs to be flashed. When you add in premium, regular, lite, etc versions, it becomes even more cluttered. Just me 2 cents.

Honestly bro, like mark said. What more can they implement, when it clearly says in big letters: "Only flash tmobile USA 1024 roms" i bricked my phone as well, took it back and got a new one. then again, i get your point also, maybe if the incorporate a general label like [US TMOBILE ONLY] Rom it might make it easier for noobs like my self to not make the common mistake.
PS. People JUST FREAKING READ BEFORE FLASHING.

Any ROM that states TMOUS etc is compatible. If you still are not sure ask the person making the ROM. There is no need to put TMOUS Only as the same ROM can be also used for others.
there is plenty of warning. my sympathy runneth not. the problem is people flashing without having even tried to read up on the process. half an hour here or on google would turn up dozens of hits that clearly point out the danger, even someone that doesn't understand yet would see the warnings and be cautious....... well.you'd think so anyway.
I got a new one now. hopefully i dont brick it this time.
Good for you!
I had to double check flashing Dutty's he has like 6 versions out and only 1 is for Tmobile.
It appears that radio ROM may kill the phone.
Just make sure the ROM is compatible with 2.08.50.xxx radio.
Have to be tmobile customer to get warrenty phone? Is prepaid card customer count?
Sometimes it hard to relate when you are on a different level
I have been messing with PC's for twenty years.
But I must admitt. I was confused at first to what rom was what.
You might want to add to the how to flash a rom thread. a little more detail about the information describing the rom.
I know you stated in the how too 2.5 or higher. I think an example would help or change the wording. Just trying to help! Not being rude. I appreciate all I have learned from you all.
Thanks!

Do you not read the stickies especially ALL the warnings in my flashing guide telling you to make absolutely sure the rom is compatable with your device. You cannot flash non Tmobile based Roms on a Tmobile 1024LEO.
I dont think there is anything you can do if you flash an incompatable rom onto your 1024LEO. The only thing you can do is take it back where you got it, say its not working and face the consequences.

Read people, READ!!!!
My cdma vogue was easy to flash even cooked my own personal roms for it, I have had my tmo hd2 for about 3 weeks now, and will probably spend about another week or two reading before I begin flashing it, this gsm stuff is just way too far out of my "comfortable" zone. Too many varients of the phone too. People need to spend time and RESEARCH a bit before attempting something they have never done before.

You can go to your community college and take writing lessons. WTF!

where should I do!

I see slot of people flashing their phones but I dont see why.what are the perks of flashing and would it void my warranty with t mobile
The purpose of flashing is so you can get new roms that are created by developers which mostly run better than the stock roms. Yes you do void your warranty if you have a HSPL (Hard SPL) but you can return it to stock SPL if you need to use the warranty. It will act like it has never been there.
Its up to you what you want to do.
hnmmm i see. is there something that other roms offer that others don't?
Yes, the operate without all the fail that that stock rom is. Quicker, Smoother, and just more awesome. Try kumars rom out. its good stuff!!!
hmmm ok i meant app and widget/feature wise

Yes, tons. Just imagine everything you've added onto your phone with cabs would already be placed on the phone from the start. Having them already "cooked" in keeps the phone from lagging and makes it mush smoother. I had a lot of lag and freezing problems with the stock t mobile rom but since switching to Energy roms I haven't had any issues. For a list of apps and programs already cooked in just check out the official rom thread of the rom your eying.
i don't thinkid be able to cuz I couldn't really understand any of the tutorials on how too doo it sad day for me
does anyone wanna help me out here or is it just too much to explain. I'm just worried about bricking my phone
What's to explain.
Go and get the HSPL for your phone-put phone into active sync with computer-run HSPL.
Download a rom for the phone-load the file LEOIMG onto the main directory of the memory card-put phone into bootloader-ROM loads-done.
That's it.
but what if i need to hard reset or something and who can give me a list of roms that are compatible i don't understand how to find them
There is a thread stickied on the top if this section listing T-Mobile compatible roms. If it says T-Mobile,T-Mous, T-Mo etc, or 1024 leo it is compatible. The thing is T-Mobile hd2's hsve 1024 mb of flash memory while the Euro hd2 has 512 mb. If you flash a 512 rom you will have a brick. There are some really good threads stickied about flashing roms, tweaks and such. Read them a few times to get an idea of terms and procedures.
BTW... YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible if you brick your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653114
List of compatible roms.
yes i agree man which is why i wanna get all the details about my phone cuz i chose to flash it. i shall look over it. thanks much guys. would anyone be willing totteach me various things or point me to such places where i can learn to make a theme for myself or possibly make one for me?
Uhmm compatible roms..........Maybe in the T-Mobile section I linked to the one that says "T-Mobile USA HD2 ROM Development"? Granted there are other ROMs in the Standard Leo section as well as other site out on the net but you have to sift through to be sure they are compatible.
anyway what if i need to hard reset will it install my stock tmo rom or will it install custom rom again.
It would reinstall the ROM that you have loaded.
ok a few more questions and I'm done. will tmobile still notify me of updates and where can i find the stock roms in case i need to warranty my phone
Have you even opened the ROM development section? If you did you would have seen the first sticky is all the different stock ROM's that are around. As for updates from T-Mobile yes you will still receive messages from T-Mobile if they put out an update. If you want to load an update you can. If you ever have issues and need warranty work yes you can flash back to a stock ROM and stock HSPL.
haven't cuz it takes forever to load cuz i only have internet on my phone. sorry
you do realize that you need an actual computer to flash your phone right? You will have an amazing adventure cracking your phone with no internet access on an actual computer. Its not impossible but good luck..
This thread seems to have :facepalms: and written all over it.
Read up and read more. Then when you think you have an idea what to do, read again!

Ive had my HTC Magic (Rogers with HTC sense and 32A) for just over a month now and ive been really looking forward to hacking my phone and putting all those nice custom roms.
But the thing is, i cant seem to get a proper understanding of what the heck i do first. Ive been searching for a while and all i seem to find are guides for already experienced users. All the "easy to read" guides are out dated and seem to be for the other magics and not the Rogers one for HTC sense.
So since hte new CM6 Froyo rom is out for the magic, i figured ill actually make a topic this time and try to figure out what to do. If anyone can offer me some help, it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm in the exact same boat here, I've got a Rogers Magic with the same radio + SPL.
From what I've gathered, this guide seems to be what applies most closely to us: wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream/Magic32A_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod#6.35.x_Radios
(sorry as new user it won't let me post a real link )
I would love to get Froyo on my phone too, as waiting for Rogers to release updates is proving to be very frustrating (and surely they will be polluted with garbage Rogers "apps" anyway).
I've still got just over 2 years left on my contract and can not really afford to brick my phone, so anything I try I'll have to be pretty confident that it should work :S. Let me know if you find anything further zoltrix, I'll be sure to do the same!

Hmm, well that looks alright. Im sure its a lot harder than it seems. Ill give it a go once some advanced android users can confirm that's what we need to do.
Thanks for the link!
Alright well i tried to setup adb which led me here:
www [dot] mydigitallife [dot] info/2009/08/24/workaround-for-htc-hero-sync-problem-in-windows-7/
now i tried playing around with HTC sync, and now my phone does nothing once connected via usb to my laptop.
I get no notification telling me i need to mount my sd card. I tried different cords, different ports and different computers. Tried fooling around with the settings on my phone and i still get nothing.
What did i do?!
Same boat as the guys above. I have experience in rooting the g1 but this mytouch 3g uses different radios and spl's from what I'm used to and I wanna make sure I upgrade it correctly and not brick the phone. If someone could just post a quick step by step that on how to upgrade to CM6 it would be much appreciated! BTW I have already rooted the device and managed to get CM 5.0.8 up and running but after I flashed CM6 the device just sits on the Mytouch screen.

nice links. which should i lookat first? the ones posted by black_box or the ones posted by tbrummell?
Also, anyone know why my phone wont promt me to mount the sd card when i plug it into my computer anymore?
i was thinking about doing a factory wipe incase i messed up a setting, but i dont know how to back up my data!
zoltrix, I got mine rooted and a 2.2 ROM up and running!
Essentially I followed this guide: rootyourmagic32a.blogspot.com/2010/04/root-htc-magic.html
Is it pretty much identical to the steps in the "6.35" section of the guide I posted in my earlier post (except it continues further to revert radio down, which I didn't want to do with the ROM I chose.)
The toughest parts for me really were getting the goldcard created (the process itself wasn't difficult, but it didn't work properly until the 3rd SD card I tried using), and getting HTC Sync to connect properly while try to run the RUU update.
I chose the FroyoRider 0.6 ROM - everything seems to be working pretty well except the is no support for the camera/video recording, hopefully that will come in a later version.
Just figured I'd let you know since we've got identical phones and it can be hard to find relevant information on these forums without digging around for hours. If you have any questions/problems let me know I'll answer the best I can.
alright man, good to hear!
ill def do it as soon as i get my replacement phone
my usb port only charges and refuses to transfer data..
woo, i got my replacement.
i'll probably try to root it this weekend
Just a question, but is a Nandroid backup the same idea as an OS image on a computer? Once you restore the image/backup its back to how it was befor any changes?
And can i make a nandroid backup before rooting anything or installing a new rom?
Yes, Nandroid is similar to taking a snapshot image of a pc with Ghost or Acronis, or something similar.
Here is a new procedure to root, looks damn simple too:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_911_Patched
No, you cannot take a Nandroid image until you have the custom recovery installed. And once you do that your phone is wiped and the original OS is gone.

Wow i was literally just bout to use the goldcard method. I made the card and anything.
Ill follow that. Thanks! Also, now that i have the goldcard made, i can still use it as a normal SD card right? OR should i reformat it first?
I'd reformat it first.
Cool
Also, can you someone look over that wiki link and confirm its correct for a ROGERS Magic? Im reading about it and comparing to the Blogspot tutorial and they use two differnt eng spl's?
EDIT: It also has a part telling me to "COnfirm i have the 3.x radio" when in fact, all Roger's magic's have 6.x
SO i posted the same question in the topic about the new hacking method and this is the response i got:
ezterry said:
Good thing the process is for the DREAM not the magic.. because otherwise I'd be doing something really risky installing a 1.33.* SPL with the 6.x radio..
If you want to root the magic either use the signed leaked rom with a gold card like every one else:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5526163&postcount=1
Or be a dare devil and risk the Magic (w/ 6.x radio) version of the exploid hack:

(In theory it will get root.. the question is did I miss something in the process having not used a rogers magic myself.

So, do NOT do that if you are using hte Magic because it is for the Dream. Instead use hte gold card.

[Q] Custom ROM upgrade

This past week I installed Android 2.2 on my 1024 HTC HD2 (T-Mobile US) using the Video Tutorial by Tech Burrow and FAQs. I used the Android NAND ROM linked under the video. Everything is working ok and I've been reading the forum and debugging for the past few days...
*this is the first time I've done any type of software modification for phones
Today I clicked on the "NAND Bible" post and the "CleanDROID v2.55" is looking like a better option since I don't use Facebook and all that other stuff that comes preinstalled. I'd be happy to dump all the bells and whistles for something cleaner and faster, with more disk space. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10675863
On the Wiki page for HD2 it says "Try not to flash Custom ROMs unless they say that they're definitely compatible with the 1024LEO, or You'll be sorry!"
My Questions:
1) Is this ROM safe for my phone?
2) If so, is it worth it to perform this upgrade? I'm not familiar with all the technical specs, and don't want to "fix something that ain't broke."
3) If so, for install can I just follow #3 of the Guide [For Newbs]?
Many thanks!
Note as said by a members siggy
If you don't want to void your warranty, you're visiting the wrong site.
I don't know if it is safe as I can't understand the coding to linux. but if you can, his source should be stated and you can check it to see if it is safe.
worth the upgrade isn't something we can tell you for we know not of your current status. E.g what works and what doesn't work for you.
I don't know what is step 3 of the guide. But if you know how to install, then install.
Note your questions really don't even need a thread for, these could be done by searching the forums through the search button or even manually. So next time, do a little thinking for yourself first, it helps your brain from rotting. No harsh feelings.
Hmm I've already installed a ROM so not really worried about voiding my warranty at this point.. more worried about bricking my phone..
Well if you had done even more reading, you'd know HSPL is a software prevention of bricking your device. So the only way to brick your device now is through hardware.

Hey mate the best rom for you if you like sense is the core droid rom look in nand builds. if your looking for gingerbread without sense i would say ultimate droid. but please read before flashing through dft or flashing through clock work mod. and only way your bricking the phone is if you flash wrong radio or rom to it. both of the roms i stated are fine for tmous hd2's have fun modding your hd2 and welcome to xda
Thanks Rotary, will check those out.
