Stopping accidental clicks/presses from face when on phone?

Anyone know how to stop an accidental clicks or other screen presses from taking place when I've got the phone to my face during a call?

Basically when I make a call or answer a call I have screen off assigned to a button, so I can then press the button to turn the screen off. To turn the screen back, just press the power on button.\

Or maybe you could simply turn PDA off with a single power button press...and when you're finished simply turn it on. Remember that the radio is always running (unless you hold the power button for 5s).

My screen turns off automatically after about 20 seconds when on a call - haven't set it to do this - in fact can't even find an option - it just seems to be the default setting. The only way to turn it back on is to press the green or red buttons, or just flick the volume control either way - works for me. (O2 XDA Mini s)

That's weird, your screen turning off after 20 seconds, mine turns off as configured in "Turn backlight after..." and "Turn off device...".

Yeah, it is weird - bit annoying, but sensible really to save the power - Perhaps its just the device turning off then, with the phone still running .... comes back to life with a flick of the volume though - touching the screen won't re-activate it. Will have to time it a bit more closely !

Radio on screen off
I too turn the device off when I'm on a call (although I only discovered I could without ending the call this morning). Otherwise, my ear activates the Start menu.

if only the backlight is turned off, the screen WILL still react to face contact!
I understand that either the device (less the phone side!) via power button, or the screen must be turned off via an utility.
It may exist, but I know no proggie able to lock the touchscreen without turning it off!
(pitty, my axim X50v can lock the screen without turning it off via a Hw sliding button9

Swapped my Wizard for a Universal: power button confuses.

Hi all. My friend and I have swapped our phones. He wanted something more pocket-friendly and more like a phone, whereas I wanted something with a bigger screen to sling in my bag - so it seems like a good compromise.
However, the way the Universal handles power/standby and the backlight seems quite different and it's baffling me. I'd appreciate some help getting my head around it.
On my Wizard, after I'd got it all figured out, I would just pull it out of my pocket and press the power button on the top to instantly turn the display and backlight on and see what was on the screen. Then I'd press the button again to turn the display and backlight off and put it back in my pocket. While in my pocket like this, all buttons except the power button were locked, yet it would still receive calls and get my e-mails and texts: ideal. If I wanted to shut the whole thing down I would *hold* the power button and it would shut down completely.
Now I've got the Universal. Pressing the power button seems to have the same effect, but holding it now turns the backlight off. Here are my questions:
1) Why would you want to do that?
2) Why is there a separate backlight button too, if holding the power button toggles the backlight?
3) How can I turn the device fully off (apart from removing the battery temporarily)?
4) How do you generally use *your* Universal? Do you just close the screen and toss it in a bag/pocket? Or do you leave it in tablet mode and press the power button?

Wow, your friend sure got ripped off. I came from a Wizard myself, the Universal is a much more refined machine. I will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

I've never had to fully turn it off, even in the factory manual they don't tell you. They give you a run around answer I'll quote here,
"Power button: Press and hold to turn the screen backlight on and off (you can also do this using the screen backlight button see page #9 & #17) When you close the lid the screen goes off; if you leave the lid open, the backlight will time out and then the screen will switch off. A single press of the power button will turn the screen on or off. The phone is turned on at startup, after the SIM pin is entered. If the screen goes off, the phone will still remain connected."
4) How do you generally use *your* Universal? Do you just close the screen and toss it in a bag/pocket? Or do you leave it in tablet mode and press the power button?
Becareful closing it and tossing it in your bag, the screen likes to make contact with the keyboard leaving marks on the keys and screen ( ) People usually put a small screen wipe rag in between the screen and keyboard before closing or get a silicone case. I have the silicone case, when I'm out it's in my hands since I'm not a belt clip person or in my pants pocket when it fits :wink: The only time it's in tablet mode is when I'm surfing the net or playing a game; I don't like to leave it in tablet mode as it exposes the screen to accidents.

My friend is pretty happy with the Wizard - it suits his needs better and it is amazing what a difference the 'compactness' makes if you use it mainly as a phone rather than a PDA.
Okay, so it seems you can't turn the Universal off. I always plug my phone in to charge at night, so I'm not worried about that.
I was really impressed with the ruggedness of the Wizard. The screen never got any scratches on it. I wish they made iPods out of the same material!
When you use the Universal as a phone, do you tend to use it closed? I feel sort of silly holding a chopping-board sized slab up to my ear. Maybe I'll get a Bluetooth headset

To be honest, I've only used the Universal's earpiece once or twice. It's too big to hold up to your ear for talking. When sitting at your desk, or when you're playing with it, people are always giving you the "Wow!" look but when you have it up against your ear as a cell phone they laugh...and laugh :lol:
I always use a bluetooth earpiece/headset. I have either my Bluespoon AX2 or Motorola HT820 with me at all times. Bluetooth is a must! I rarely use the Wizard's earpiece either, always bluetooth on the Wizard as well.

Is Wake on Home Button Push Possible?

Hey, did anyone found solution... is it possible to tweak settings somehow so that display turns on by pushing home button? Or do I really have to push power button every time?
I know of volume button tweak, but.. that one is no good (volume settings gets displayed)... Any other ideas, suggestions? (other than "pull the stylus")

Try AE Button Plus. You can customize a lot of buttons. I didn't tried what you asked, but it worth a try.
Anyway, take care using it.

I would say not. There appears to be no power to these lower buttons while in standby, so no software could work?

No, for the reasons given.
BUT... you could use MobileMagic to toggle the screen on/off when device is turned face down. That way when you turn it face down, screen goes off and buttons are locked. To turn it back on, turn devicedevice face down again.
You do need to go to Start-Settings-System-Power-Advanced and untick the option, "Turn off device if not used for", because if the device gets turned off (instead of just screen off) it won't respond.
I have it set to turn screen off on reverse portrait too,
so it turns off automatically when I put it in my pocket.

Im also afraid for that power button... used it a lot on my diamond so it got bricked, its so gentle... Im using it as much as little possible now on mine HD for that reason.

I have s2u2 unlock on stylus out, so I pull out the stylus, the HD comes on and unlocks. It's so simple.

Do you find this has any impact on battery life? If i'm right, this just turns off the screen but does not put the device to sleep?

That's not possible for the simple reason that the buttons below the screen are part and parcel of the touch screen, so if the screen is off, they won't work.

That is correct.
Power consumption, in this case, depends on what applications are left running. GPS, streaming video, etc would be a bad idea to leave running. But more workday apps use very little juice when the huge power drain of the screen is turned off.

Nope... I've tried that app. Its great for locking down the normal WM hardware buttons, but it doesn't have the HTC bespoke "Home button" on the list of configurable buttons.

Could be a numpty questions...power on by pressing screen?

I have recently taken delivery of an Otterbox for use on my bike (GPSComputerCycle and music) but to save power I would like to be able to turn the screen off during the ride (xpshutdown allows me to do this) and then press the screen if I want to turn the HD back on again.
I use S2U2 if this makes an difference.
Is there a setting somewhere which allows me to press the screen to power the THD back on again (even if it goes to a lock-screen)?
I had a quick look through the settings (Screen/Power/Lock) but couldn't find anything.
Anyone help?

Not possible AFAIK.
When the screen powers down, that applies to the touch-sensitive mechanism as well as the display element.
It would probably require something deeper than even a registry hack, the drivers would need re-writing or something.

However there is other ways of doing this:
1. Use s2u2 unlock on stylus out, so when you pull out the stylus, the HD comes on and unlocks. It's simple.

Unfortunately the HD will be inside an Otterbox mounted on the handlebars of my bike, so removing the stylus would not be an option and neither would using the G-Sensor.
Sounds like I will have to have it powered on all the time. I know that GPSCycleComputer dims the display while it is active, so this might be a part solution.

Alternative solution:
Attach a dynamo to the wheels of your bicycle and charge your HD on the go
I wouldn't be able to even begin telling you how to do this though!

Have you tried XDAShutdown by DaveShaw. Nice little app with plenty of skins which allows you to Reset, Shutdown & sleep

As far as I'm aware, apps still continue to run when you power down the screen by pressing the power button.
What makes you think this is not the case?

I have the same problem. I noticed the problem while listening to Resco Radio. When I turn off the screen the music stops and when I turn the screen back on the music immediately starts playing again.
I'm running Mikenificent 3.0, WM6.5.1.

Unfortunately that's not quite correct. If you play music in the music tab without headphones and press the power button, the music will stop. However, if you just blank the screen, the music will continue. Same can be said about rescoRadio and WunderRadio as well as other apps.
There are several ways to combat this and I can list two of the top of my head:
1) Gyrator - rotation software which has a setting to 'turn screen off.' This way you can flip your phone upside down and it will blank the screen but not suspend the device.
2) S2U2 - locking software which has a setting to 'but only blank screen' which will turn the screen off instead of suspending the device.

Hi Mate,
Here is the link for the program you've asked for. Specifically designed for Touch HD.
It turns off screen and locks the buttons, It doesn't put the phone in sleep mode like the way it does when you press the power button. This utility just simply turn off the screen and locks the button on the phone but doesn't go to sleep mode, so when you receive text message the screen would turn back on.
