[Please help] Root mt3g - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Ok. I know that this has been asked many times... so do not flame for this...
Just got a T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. I have the Perfect SPL (form what i understand form the other threads) 1.33.0006 (SAPP30000) with the 2.22.19.26I Radio.
Which is the best way for me to root my phone?
-i do want to keep the stock Donut ROM.
-i do not want to lose any user data... just want to get root access - think of it as Quickpwn or Redsn0w is for iPhone
What would be a way for me to update my phone after that if T-Mobile releases a new update?
Also...
If i do flash my phone with a different ROM, how do i return to the stock T-Mobile one?
I have spent a good day going through the Sapphire forum so please don't be rude and tell me to 'Search'
Thanks

if thats all you want then the quickest way to keep what you already have is not rooting your phone

flashing a rom with that specific ota update/or/unrooting your phone to receive ota updates/or/again not rooting your phone

you can flash the newest ota release (same as you would a rom) or you could just not root your phone
Just to highlight all your questions could be anwsered with not rooting your phone... and in a serious way. If I were you I would really rethink why you want root in the first place

There are quite a few rooting tools available among the forum threads.
Do a little bit of research; and you'll certainly end up finding some success in regards to your topic.

One click root - DOES work on myTouch 3G

There was a locked thread in development where someone asked if it would work. A lot of people replied (obviously without even knowing what they are talking about) that it wouldn't work.
it DOES work on the myTouch 3G's - I just did it on one.
It works on any android phone - but the current apk implementation flashes the 1.4 cyanogen recovery image so it only works on phones that image will boot (i.e. the HTC Dream, or the Sapphire... etc)
It's way easier to apply that than it is to apply the nbh downgrade... etc.
Cool
I posted the question in a wrong area im glad someone with a mytouch tried it i bricked my first mytouch
Worked
This worked for me also I am now on CyanogenMod v3.9.11.2 and it works very well.
TY Cyanogen!
ed
Works...but hesitant
This definitely works on the MT3G just tried it...whew glad it worked Still extremely hesitant on flashing new rom though. Dont know why even though I have a rooted G1. Perhaps I just love this phone too much to f*#$ it up

Now that I think about it...If you just use this to get the recov img the MT3G still has the "perfected" spl. So exactly will this allow you to flash any new ROMs? That is why the "goldcard" was used to trick it and flash to an earlier "non-perfected" spl which would then allow you to flash ROMs updated radio etc etc etc. Shed any light on this?
I know there can be risks when doing any kind of modding/hacking. What is the main risk with rooting the MT3G? Is it mainly an issue with the battery falling out or running out of juice? Or is the rooting process invasive enough (i know it is root = can touch everything) or unstable enough that there is a relatively high probability of an issue running the canned procedure?
I have my phone, love it, my wife would kill me if I wrecked it. I just want to know how likely I am to end up with a brick using this method.
Also a question to understand this procedure, if I run the apk and reboot normally then there is no lasting root, correct? I have to go into the recovery mode and flash over a new rooted rom for root to become permanent? Does this actually change the SPL on the MT3G, does it preserve the ability to flash other roms at any time in the future? I want to know if this is a one time open up your phone for rooting or if after I do this will I always have root.
Sorry for all the questions, but I have been lurking around and haven't found definitive answers to these questions. Thanks!
Dave
Dave, Ive used this method. However if you didnt notice in my previous post...the spl does NOT change. Which is why I questioned the ability to flash any ROMs. The more "complicated" method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133) requires a "goldcard" with an earlier version of the spl. Which I believe allows flashing to occur.
Yeah, I saw your post after I posted. I think this is great for a simple root I am thinking to have future rooting I will need the goldcard method anyway.
It would seem that this method should be able to modify the SPL since it is able to run as root, maybe not though...
I did mine last night and now doing my wifes MT3G and I was comparing cyanogen's vs stock and its night and day...no loading screen issues with cyan's build and keyboard response got better too...
LOL yeah Ii was thinking about the SPL if we can change it out? I kinda want to call my phone semi-rooted
so anyone flash a new spl/radio using this one click root? success? or no?

Just did it...1.33.2005/ also S-off. this is definitely legit and makes things a hell of a lot more easier than all those damn adb commands. Dont get me wrong at all I do appreciate all the work that was done by Haykuro and the other boys because without them Im sure this wouldnt be possible. Anywho...it works.
Okay. As newb as one can get with phone mods, etc. But it actually works. I dont know what the exact benefits of it are but I am running... Mod version CyanogenMod-3.9.11.2 per about phone. All my downloads are gone but it worked. I dont know what the difference/any limitations is for down the road, in comparison to the gold card method (I hope none), with this type of root but hey it actually worked and I would have kick my own a$$ if I bricked my phone. Thanks to folks who found this way and are their any "rooted" differences now that I am on cfw using this method for say updating to cyanogens 4.0 eventual release?
Alright, I took the plunge and it worked flawlessly!
I use the 1 click install via the market app called Recovery Flasher. I installed CyanogenMod 4.0.1 Stable. Zoom zoom zoom...
I thought I may have had an issue when I rebooted after flashing since it sat at the MyTouch 3G splash for a ton longer than normal. I had read it was normal for the first boot to take longer so I didn't freak out and pull the battery. I just let it come up and now I couldn't be happier.
If I remember reading correctly CyanogenMod has the fix for the root vulnerability used in this hack to root plugged. So, now that I have a rooted ROM and recovery 1.4 will I ever need to worry about having the dreaded "Perfect SPL?"
so easy a caveman could do it! a thousand times, thank you.
so its confirmed you can FLASH a different SPL with no problem ? cuz if so im gettin a mytouch ! lol

New G2 Touch (Hero) - need your help.

Hi guys,
I have got my G2 Touch (Hero) sat at home waiting for me and cannot wait to get back and play with it.
I was hoping you guys could help me with the following questions though:
1. How do I know if I should bother rooting it or not? If I root at a later date will I lose all of my other stuff on the phone?
2. How do I know if I have Donut on my phone and if I don't, should I root first or update to donut first?
3. Is there a list of "mush have apps" on the forum... I've spent all day reading articles on "must haves" but was hoping for "real life" feedback from you guys on what I must get.
Thanks

be prepared to wipe everything, as this is the solution for 95% of all problems (people not wiping before upgrade). don't you dare to ask for help before you wiped and reflashed afaik you can get root access without wiping, but i am pretty sure you are going to want a custom rom like modacos rom, and this almost inevitably means you have to wipe.
in q&a there is a thread for what you can do with root. it is not really complete, another try is to search for "root" in the market. most applications that need root access are found by this, so you can see what you could do if you where rooted.

easy one. there is no donut rom for hero (except for a custom one here on the forum, which does not _really_ work), so you don't have it on your phone. imho: don't bother updating to donut rom, unless you know what you are doing.

what about the thread called "must have apps on your Hero" here in the themes&applications section? i don't think it will get any better than that... you need to do the reading yourself, you won't find a post that says "here is a zip with the ten apps you need to be happy" (well maybe you will find it, but i doubt that actually will be happy with it).

Hi kendong2, thanks for the response...
I have read about this update on tmobile's website...
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=SOFTWAREDOWNLOADS&tab=2
If this isn't the Donut update, is it just an updated version of the original rom?

It isn't Donut - it is just the T-Mobile version of the 2.73 ROM. Since your phone is very new, it probably already has it anyway, but to check go to Menu-> Settings -> About Phone, and check the build number. If it starts 2.73, you've already got the updated ROM.
If you get a 1.xx build number, my advice would be *not* to install the T-Mobile update as it will make it much harder for you to move to a custom ROM at a later date. You should download and install a generic 2.73 that has been pre-rooted.

Dave

Hi again guys...
Checked my Touch last night and it is on 1.76
I'm a bit weary about rooting and installing generic / custom roms for fear of voiding the warranty and then owning a £500 brick...
Will updating to 2.73 from tmobile really make it harder to move to a custom rom later....?

Put it this way -if you upgrade to 2.73 via the T-Mobile RUU, in order to move to a custom ROM in future you will have to "downgrade" to a generic HTC 2.73 ROM via a Goldcard (see here) which is much more complicated when you've already got a ROM on your phone which is "exploitable".
The other thing you should bear in mind is that when Android 2.0 is released for the Hero, it will likely first come out as a ROM for unbranded phones with operator branded versions following some time later. This is what happened when 2.73 was released, and T-Mobile in particular was quite tardy in getting its own version out.
So, if you want to go to Android 2.0 sooner rather than later, you should look at a non-T-Mobile version of 2.73 now.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks very much for the advice guys, going to do as you suggested.
Unfortunately I have more questions though:
1. to load the generic 2.73 I just "oneclickroot" (found the video on youtube to follow) and then download the theme and rename it "update.zip" put this onto your memory card, turn off your phone then press and hold the "home" button while pressing the power button.... keep the "home" button down until you get to the recovery screen then select flash the update.zip as you would a rom. Is that right or have I missed anything?
2. Having a Tmobile G2 Touch rather than a Hero won't make any difference to the rom that I choose will it?
3. Will putting a new rom on lose my contacts or widgets / scenes etc?
4. Can you recommend a nice rom to go for, like what you guys are using? Want it to look nice, be stable but fast
Cheers again for the help guys.
Answers!
1. Can't help here as I didn't use the one-click method.
2. No.
3. Yes. However, if you've synced your contacts to Google, you will get them back again once you set the phone up again.
4. Modaco - nuff said.
Regards,
Dave
For a newbie I can recommend 'the unlockr'-Google it- they have easy to follow vids for rooting and flashing roms for the hero. It's really easy and you won't brick your phone if you have half a brain cell.

Anyone with a Root Solution for Rogers HTC Magic? (new update)

This post for anyone who knows how to root the new updated Rogers HTC Magic with the new:
32A
HBoot - 1.76.0010
Radio - 6.35.10.18
Please post any comments or suggestions if they are applicable.
Thank you.
Rogers HTC Magic (32A)
HBoot - 1.76.0010
Radio - 6.35.10.18
I'm in the same boat. Updated my phone with the Rogers updater, and 1.76.0010 seems to be a perfected SPL. I'm going to attempt the gold card method once I get the necessary hardware this weekend. I'm just concerned I might brick my phone, since all the gold card tutorials are pretty old...
+1
Any results?
Diddo, same problem. Tried the "One Click Root", no joy.
I thought that the data connection issue was b/c of the new radio so I foolishly listened to Rogers. Last time I make that mistake.
I am also in dire ned of a method to root this, or even reverse Rogers....
Maybe try the full version of the Relenless Rooter plus (the one for perfected SPL) software? It seems that 1.76.0010 is a perfect SPL.
Thankfully, I read all over the web and decided not to use the security patch that Rogers suggested and did not update. I kept the 1.33.0009 SPL and was able to use the normal Relenless Rooter software. Don't know it the full software will work for the 1.76.0010 SPL but why don't give it a try.
i'm pretty sure it has already been tried, and doesn't work
i too, am in the same boat
rogers kind of bullied us into this update, and i feel really stupid for falling for it.
i hope someone is working on a fix, tho i am yet to read one post saying that someone is.
Not to be mean or rude or a troll, but there were several warnings against updating with the official RUU.
In fact the "Rogers Mandatory Update Thread" many people mentioned many times to just wait till it was rooted then flash the rooted ROM.
But some people had to be hasty...

Yes and no. What do you expect when Rogers cut off your data if you don't update. If you went to Android forums or here, you'll find what kind of saga people with rooted phones went in order to obtain data back.
So, at that time, people with the original cupcake had three choices: Root the phone and go through curse droid's complicated process to get his rom, root and find another Rom + patch so as to trick Rogers into believing that the phone has been updated, or just go ahead and flash the official rom (and then hope someone can root it).

Complicated procedure? You are mixing up two methods that made it possible to keep root. For cursor, all u needed to do was flash spl and radio, then his Rom, that's it. There is another method that allows u to keep original radio and. Spl, this one uses a script after applying a new rom. Just giving the facts, I do feel sorry for those that jumped the gun though, i was really close myself

That's the reason for this thread. The update includes a new radio and no developer have found a way around it. Maybe the main developers (aka chefs) have moved on to newer and more exciting devices, like the Nexus One.
Who knows, maybe you guys can band together and pay a developer to do this?

It's the SPL that's perfected. Not the radio. And most devs for the 32A are still here. It's mostly G1/Dream devs namely Cyanogen who have moved on to the Nexus One.
Amon_RA is still giving updates to the G1/Dream and MT3G/Magic and Hero.

You are right about the SPL. I meant that too. I mixed Radio and SPL because Rogers is scanning for the new radio even for those who have root, as the developers page show.
Anyway, best of luck to those who upgraded and got the perfected SPL. Maybe someone can ask a favor from one of the developers?
Some help with rooting the 32A magic from rogers
Already asked for help via PM, no dice. I suspect that after the update the devs are inundated with requests. I'm happy to pay for someone to figure this out, but don't really know who to approach. Anyone?
So still no luck on anyone rooting this update... This is taking a lot longer then I thought it would. I only did the update because I was sure someone would be willing to jump right on and root this new SPL but no dice.

Hmmm, should be a lot easier for you to get started with roms and stuff now that it is rooted.
But it sounds like you want to go through the steps by yourself to understand how things work?
Anyway, there is many different ways to root a magic all depends on HBOOT.
You should be happy you don't have to go through this, some mobiles still not root-able.
ya though it will make everything easier i just feel i need to do it by myself in order to understand it more

IF YOUR PHONE IS ROOTED, DONT DO it UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING!!!! IF it is rooted thats easier for custom rom, unrooted means only provider Roms!
well if you wanna UNROOT your phone, try using the stock RUU, that should do the trick, unless your having a rogers, then PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE!!
Because the new update is a perfect one, that means you cant root it that easy!!

How do unroot my evo and go back to the stock rom and recovery

I dont know how to unroot it or put it back to normal so they could never tell that i had done anything with the phone i forgot to backup the phone.
Could anyone help me out? Sorry that i sound like such a noob.

HBOOT 2.8 With S-OFF but it still say's i have S-ON
i just put Smelkus Amon Ra-Supersonic-4.3 recovery on it.
it's not letting me post the link because i am a new user and cant post links until i make over 10 post.
But its HTCEVOHACKS Guide for people that need to root HBOOT-2.18.0001
Probably the easiest thing to do is follow the instructions on how to downgrade your Hboot and just leave it at that. You'll lose root and have s-on, and you'll also get rid of the watermark in the bootloader screen that indicates that it's unlocked. Follow the steps in this guide to downgrade your Hboot:

Essentially, s-on is "security on", and vice-versa. Having s-off allows you the ability to flash things like radios to your phone. As far as the stock ROM, there are links to two different stock Sprint ROM's (sometimes also referred to as RUU or ROM Upgrade Utilities) in that thread I linked you to. Just pick one. Since you won't be rooting it again it won't matter, and a Sprint rep won't know that the ROM on your phone isn't the one it came with to begin with.

Along the lines of the original issue, will Sprint activate a rooted phone or do they actively check to see if it's rooted before activating? Just curious b/c I have an extra one I'm selling and it's still rooted.
Yes i have another question too, if i unroot my phone is it perminitly unrooted? Or would i be able to re root it.
Just helpfull for the future if i decide to root whatever phone i upgrade too.

No it's not permanent. You can root again after unrooting. A lot of people will unroot to take their phone in for service or warranty claims and then root it again after it's fixed.

Nope, not permanent at all. You could do it every morning when you woke up, if you wanted to.
Stock by day. Rooted by night!
