iPhone 3g contract was up and started looking for a new handset, 3Gs? meh.
perhaps if apple had some sexy stuff to say at their conference about a fw update, but no
just some waffle about an iPad or something? lol
so 3 days into my 14 day return time with the HD2 it was locking up, freezing and genraly sluggish.
i guess i was just used to the iphone 'just working' alough saying that, it was jailbroken and 'trying' to act like a normal phone.
yer yer i had all the apps i wanted (via appsync) and boy was the iphone 3g struggleing.
anyways here i am with the hd2, locking up. so i found my way back to an old friend THIS FORUM.
amazed to find that my hd2 had a rom number way below what was out there.
aware that flashing a new rom 'could' invalidate my warranty i downloaded the stock O2 rom just in case.
tried to flash a htc stock updated rom and it failed
then discovered the HSPL crack, and tried the flash again, YES! it worked this time.
now, humm i dunno. the phone looks the same but feels different, sure all the O2 branding is gone and some features are unlocked but it now feels much better to use.
faster, smoother and more slick.
got tomtom on there and MYplayer watching bbciplayer OVER 3G not locked to wifi use like the iphone.
this things got me interested now i think ill keep it

No-one can answer that question yet. All we can do is summise, and most would say yes.
There hasn't been an official release of the WM7 requirements yet, so we can't be 100% sure. There's been a pinksheet, which is a rumoured requirements list, and the HD2 is fine for that (albeit the minimum ROM, not the recommended).
We'll really have to wait and see. The official specs for WM7 can't be that far away.

I'm the same as you, I had the iphone 3G, and was due an upgrade, but the 3Gs didn't really offer anything new so went fo the HD2. I've had it for a few weeks now, and had a lot of issues, or should I say glitches. Some have just been me not used to a windows phone, and some have been glitches with the phone. However, most of those have now been rectified thanks to the fantastic help on this website, and especially Wacky Banana on the PM's (Many thanks). I am now starting to enjoy the phone, and can see it's fantastic potential. Despite the lack of apps (which I do miss from time to time), I am now starting to think this phone is better than the iphone, and IF WM7 becomes available it will be a very exciting prospect.
Whilst on the topic of WM7, I emailed HTC directly and they assured me that WM7 will be available on the HD2, and will be a free 'upgrade'. They did say not to expect it until the end of the year at the earliest though. Despite this, I have still been informed my some on this forum that WM7 for the HD2 won't happen. So I guess it's a case of wait and see.

Erm, you DO realise you can download apps from the Internet, and that the Marketplace holds just a tiny subset of all the apps that are available for WM phones, right?
Most of the apps I use (Cash Organizer, Coreplayer, Pocket Informant, KeePass, Tomtom, GCzII, Skyfire) aren't available from Marketplace. You have to get out of the iPhone mindset of everything being controlled and spoonfed to you. Try handango or googling for "Windows Mobile Software", you'll be amazed at what's out there.
+1 You wont find emulators like Morphgear on the Marketplace but at least you can install great apps without having to jailbreak etc
Im surprised your O2 HD2 freezes? The only reason Im still on the stock O2 rom (although I might give 1.66 a go) is because I've not had any major issues with it.

Yes. The same way you installed custom ROM of 6.5.5 (6.6) there will be WM7 ROM on XDA most definitely.
The same way my old Trinity P3600 runs WM 6.5.3 it will be possible to run WM7 on HD2.
I was on the stock o2 rom, and no major issues except for SMS not sending on the second day, and sometimes it would fail to update the weather. Everything is that bit slicker on the newest ROM.
I heard o2 don't bother with firmware updates, I'm not going to wait for nothing so I flashed successfully straight away.

Yeah I do, and have found some good ones. I just miss certain apps like ebay app, yell.com app (I know you can go onto these via the internet but the app just made it easier), but one that I miss the most is Sky+ app where I can remotely record on my sky+ box at home. I can do this via text, but is costs money, doing it from the iphone app was free.
It's no big issue, and I am starting to prefer my HD2 to my iphone, just wish you could have the best of both worlds

beat me to it.
OK heres the big problem i have now....
every now n then i goto my phone and 'slide to unlock'
it asks for my pin, i input said pin but it says its wrong? i know its not.
again SLOWLY, it says 'wrong pin' or words to that effect. NOOOOO
only way out of it is to do a cold boot. (remove the batt)
granted i only tried rom Le2_UK_1.43.206.4 for about 2 days, but never had this happen
untill now im on 1.66?
REALY flustering.
on the few times its happed ive noticed theres a sms or missed call whateing.
perhaps this is triggering the pin error?
ill let you know if it happens without a missed call or sms, but the 5 times its happened
in the last 18 hours its allways been the same.

most of these "apps" can easily be made by you to run on your HD2
MS have even given you the facility to do it with 6.5..
widgets, often overlooked, and not perfect, you can turn some net pages in "apps" just like the iphmoan makes you get from the nappystore.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd721906.aspx
but this is more powerful as you can do them yourself..
It's something sorely lacking lately on here, the "DIY" ethics we used to have, but there's other guides..
Maybe we should have a competition for some new widgets..

I was in the same boat as the OP. My phone had 1.43 and was 15 mins away from being returned when I decided to give 1.61 (and now 1.66) a go. The later ROMS are without a doubt the ones that the HD2s should have been launched with.
While they're still not 100% perfect, they're infinitely better, smoother and more stable than the 1.43 operator branded ROMs.

Yes it is. And it works perfectly.
I am new to the forum, and I just bought a new G1 off craigslist tonight. ($150, new in box, with two protective cases). Why should I root and modify it? What are the benefits? What will I be able to do that I can't do right now? Links?
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
EDIT: Oh, I should have said that I am not looking for another hobby or technological fun (I get plenty of that!). I just need to know what I have to gain before I dig in. Thanks.
If you have to ask that, just don't bother.

My reply is perfectly valid.. If you don't even know why you want root, what's the point..? Just be happy with what you've got.
Do a search for "Root" and just read.
Tethering (use your 3g connection on your laptop)
Apps to SD (the g1 only has a few megabytes of memory for apps/games, so you can use a lot more)
Eclair(live wallpapers, more features)
Multitouch(if your used to the iphone/ipod touch)
Hero/Sense (to get a different android experience)
SPEED! (some roms like superd/fastTest/CSDI are fast as hell!)
Themes (so you can make your phone look any way you want (pink notification bars ftw))
Thats about it.

Really, if you aren't looking for something you need to put a lot of work into, rooting and modifying your device probably isn't for you. Unless you want to be left with outdated and obsolete features. There are a lot of things about rooting that you really should keep up with. And if you can't make the commitment to it, it's probably best to just skip this.
But like I said before, you can do it now, forget about everything else and just keep outdated and obsolete features.
THANKS! It is a beautiful thing when a person chooses to be helpful and kind. I appreciate it.
I guess apps to the SD and the increased speed are the only two things that I would be interested in.
If the phone memory fills up, will anything else I install automatically go the the 2gb sim card?
I do not have a data plan and plan on just connecting to home and work wi-fi networks when I need to access the Internet. Will moding the G1 help with anything wi-fi related?

Don't get too interested. Due to the G1's slow processor, most multi-touch will be more like.. a bad synonym that I can't think of. Upgrading to the Nexus last week from this device.. was worth it.

That's basically what I meant, but with more words.
Well, after a couple days of using the phone and downloading productivity apps and games that I think I will use on a regular basis, I only have 10MB of space left on the phone. So, it looks like I will be rooting/modding out of necessity.

Well, it's over a year old, and something in the Android world is pretty much outdated after a few weeks
But here is some other reasons:
1) Not sure about this. Although, i'm pretty sure i remember using a multi-touch gallery a while ago.
2) I'm not sure why you'd want that anyway, it's pretty pointless. Also, that's only true for the home screen. There are apps on the marketplace that have 180° rotation. Cyanogen has also built in 180° rotation into his Nexus ROM so it could be possible on the G1.
3) I have no idea what the author means by this. Saving apps to your SDcard only means you can potentially install thousands of apps because they get saved to the SDcard instead of the phone. Also, i believe you can move the CACHE to the sdcard now too.
4) Downloading themes is very easy and incredibly simple to do now with Metamorph. It's pretty hard to 'soft-brick' your phone with this.
5) Not true at all. Everything is explained in very detailed tutorials. The only way you can mess up the Linux commands is if you can't read. Obviously, having a knowledge of Linux is very handy.
6) The firmware we have on our phones are MILES better than anything T-mobile releases, purely because devs get the OTA, mod it, and release something awesome, usually, the same day. Oh, you'd also lose root if you flashed one of these OTA's.
I'm not blaming the author of that thread at all, It's just things have improved ten fold since this time last year
Cyanogen has his 180 degree rotation in his newest Donut ROM (if you even really want it?)
If you use nandroid, there's never a reason to worry about a soft-brick. I nandroid every other day actually. Flashing something or not.
Finally, the person who got me into rooting was still running cyanogen 4.0.4 about a month ago and still loved it. you don't have to be "dedicated." of course, you'll be lacking some features you might find useful if you never update, but you'll still always be on top of a stock phone.
And, yes, meltus' famous louder volume hack. (If it wasn't for this I never would have been up for work with my mytouch alarm.)
Apps2sd - get a bigger sdcard. I have an 8gig class 6. payed 18 dollars for it on ebay (with free shipping) got it in 3 days. and yes, apps2sd might not free up your internal storage because of cache and all that.... but: it lets you install more apps. and: there are apps the clear your cache. you can even set it to clear periodically (mines clears every 24 hours.)
yes: I would suggest rooting, but I would also suggest that you read VERY closely and learn wtf to do before you ever even try.
After talking with several people, as well as with T-Mobile tech support... it seems that I can change the OS on my HTC HD2 from Windows to Android; is it really possible or have I misunderstood what I was/am hearing?
If I can change the OS to Android... is their a Froyo 2.2 release that will work for me out there?
TIA
Yup, you can change it. I'm running android on mine. It's not perfect but its' damn close to it. Oh, did the tech tell it'll void your warranty?

You should try several for yourself. I'm currently using Bangsters V1.2 (without sense). I said damn close because some builds have trouble with bluetooth, Screen of Death (screen wont project anything just black screen) <===requires you to pull your battery off, but wont kill your phone. Also screen freezes tend to be the biggest problem. Keep in mind that android with will in development and has barely been released for the HD2 about 2 months ago.
Bangster's only glitch is a screen freezes for about 5 seconds and then recovers but it doesn't happen often. Oh, and no bluetooth. Try a couple builds out they're not bad at all. I use android daily for now.
And try a different windows rom that make a huge difference. Energy Roms are hands down the best.
what do you guys tell people who aren't really tech people when they ask about your phone being the way it is? For instance when someone with the same phone as you asks about your freshly flashed screen off animation do you say, " I flashed a .zip I got from xda" or do you say, " It just came like that".
I'm just being a curious cat wondering how other people answer questions.
for the average user they don't understand, so i call it "aftermarket features" and that kind of gets them in the right mindset

haha, it is exactly like that for me! with my other devices i just say o hacked it. haha ppl i know are too dumb nowadays with all the latest gadgets :/
I try to turn everyone I know into a nerd so I say I "hacked" my phone. It usually sparks enough interest that they'll look into it. Some people have paid me to root for them, especially back in the G1 days. Now...almost everyone I know rocks a rooted Android of some sort.
Yea I say I hacked it or its modded.
yeh, ppl are always shocked when they see htc software on my tg01 (sense 2.5)
they are like how did you do that?!
i hacked it
'oh... thats stupid'
why?
'Errr...'
When I had my Hero I tried explaining things to friends/family etc. especially those who had android devices. To my dismay I actually don't know anyone who has taken the time to learn how to liberate their OS from Sprint, or really care about being the administrator of their device.
Anymore if someone notices my android is different than theirs I just say "You're probably too stupid to understand"..
Of course I'm kidding but it is a little disappointing how most people don't care wether or not they "got root"
I say I hacked it. Get a nice side income hacking them for people too

I tell the truth. I will start explaining about root and how manufacturers prefer if you don't have access to certain parts of the operating system. Most people tap out here. If they don't I keep going until they get confused. If that doesn't happen I help them start the rooting process.
So far I got all the way once... and that's pushing it. I helped a guy root his phone, but he didn't really understand much.
I'm the only person that ever sees my phone....I certainly don't try to show off by flashing it everywhere...

I can never explain this to people verbaly. I always have to do a physical demonstration and relate to it as a special form of theming. I've only found one person who somewhat understands what it is...and my uncle who knows about 1,000,000,000x what I know about technology lol.
Most people just get really jealous when I explain everything I can do. Then they ask if I'll do it to there phone, I'll tell them to research it themselves THEN ask me to do it, they usually just get frustrated and continue to ***** every time my phone outperforms theirs

It's pretty much impossible to "break" an HD2 by flashing Android on it.
You can even have them run it from SD at first using haret (no flashing required) so he gets to love Android?
What happened to yours?
Windows mobile is out of date, but Android is going forward. It is better to just flash the NAND, not trying to SD. I, too, at first afraid to flash NAND, but when I did it, I felt the difference! Just read the instructions carefully on the firmware and all is well!

Well,
I personally would stay out of such 'convincing methods'. If that person doesn't want to do it himself, convincing him will put you into responsibility and he will blame everything on you if something goes wrong or he simply doesn't like Android. I am not sure if this is worth it risking a friendship over ... !
I do agree with Junner2003. But if it is a must I would put Android Nand rom on sd memory card. That way they can fully choose and use both to test out and see if they like Android. I set my phone up this way and since then I have never booted into WindowsMobile again. I fell in love with Android right away. I do have it set up to boot automatically so if I want I can stop the auto boot and boot into windows instead of android.

Not sure if I'd agree with that, there seems to have been lots more nand errors leading to stuck radio/spl since we started partitioning. It could simply be that the hd2 has been in the wild for near two years, and so more are starting to fail, but still seems to be more prevalent in android flashing threads than winmo.

Well.....I told my friends to flash Android and they said "Holy smoke, can i do that? Show me how! Woooohooo!"
Now; i don't know about your friends but you have to make some new ones. I believe "nerds" is the right name for them! Look for them! The will definitely want to use Android on their HD2.

Ohhh.. just kidding mate. I agree with the other guys, flash Android on your phone and show to your friends that nothing happened to your device and it's awesome. The next day???? Flash Windows Phone 7 and show them again that your device is more awesome! On the very next day they "Will break Down"!
But be careful not to break it...Again! Just....follow the steps and everything would be fine!
