Battery issue or phone issue - HTC Magic 32B - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I guess I have a issue on my phone regarding my battery or the phone itself...
A few weeks I bought a used Vodafone Spain HTC Magic 32B and the battery never lasted too long, with almost no use It would get about 12/14 hours with everything turned off. Overnight, with everything turned off, it discharges about 60%...
I bought a new cheap battery from the ebay and the problem persists, but evan worst.
I friend of mine has a HTC Magic 32A with a Hero rom, so I asked him to use my battery and see how long will it last, yesterday afternoon it was about 46% and already had passed about 24 hours.
I am using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532902 with almost no widgests. I did not stick with the original rom for a long time, but I guess that I already had this battery issue...
If the battery lasts that long on my friend's Magic 32A, obviously its not a problem with the battery.
What can be the problem?
Can I have something running on background thats draining my battery, evan when its with the screen off and no applications show up in the several task managers that I have installed?
Here are some details of the phone:
SAPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0007 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
I also noticed the radio version of my friend's Magic is different from mine. Would that influence the battery duration?

Flash a new rom. Cyanogen 4.04, akirian, or Armon_RA to test battery. Dont flash a hero flash a 1.5 cupcake or 1.6 doughnut rom.

Ok, will do that.
Where can I get the cyanogen rom, the link seems to be dead since the Goggle vs Cyanogen thing.
Any way, the battery seems to be ok, since it runs fine on my friends Magic 32B.

A problem the Hero roms is that the clock frequence is set to run 528000 all the time.
If you want to continue use a Hero rom i can recommend the overClockWidget where you can set the clock frequence low when the screen is turned off and it will save you a lot of battery

Humm, thats interesting, the problem is that I am not running a Hero rom. My friend is, but don't know which one.

I though so
Does anyone has clue of what could be happening?

One other thing, ı seem to have a usb problem, since ı can not connect the phone to any computer using a usb cable and use the phone as a usb mass storage device, already tried several usb cables on several computers, either in linux and windows ...
Could this be related to the battery issue?

Sadly I need to confirm the same problem on my and my friend HTC Magic 32B. I've back to stock rom but problem still exist.

And what about your spl?
Humm I start to see a pattern over here I wonder if its the radio version that is draining the battery, I guess I will leave the phone on with the radio turned off overnight and check how much battery will it drain...

i had exactly the same problem. My battery was drained over night and the phone switched off. I wonder if this is a bug with my phone becuse nobody else has this issue. The thing is, when i reoboot my phone lots of apps are starting itself like locale, aknotepad, tunewiki and many other. I installed a task killer app and everytime i reboot i first start the task killer and kill everything. Without charging my battery last for about 3 days when idling and 1 day with heavy usage...

This is just a long shot, Have you all tried different cables/charge units? Maybe get a cable and charger from a friend that you know works?

I have noticed that, but I am already using a task manager to kill all applications, so thats not the problem...

It just depends how quickly the battery is draining. It will get hot on a call over 10 mins but your battery should last at least 10 hours. So is it draining faster than that?

Hi Mike,
Thank you for replying me. In my case, the battery is draining within 30mins from 100% to 0%. Would you have any idea about the problem?
Thanks!!

Hi asachan
Well that is decidedly not normal. I have seen a few reports here on this problem. A search might show some results I have not tried so far. However, I would do the standard things initially:
1 Remove and reinsert the battery
2 Hard Reset.
If the problem persists and you have a warranty then use it.
If you have no warranty then a detailed search here on rapid battery drain or words to that effect might reveal something.
You may find some people suggesting flashing a new ROM, but check the basics first. In particular, it may be a battery problem so worth checking that.
Mike
the battery should not be drained so quick......
after 2~ hour HSDPA web browsing
then I 've made a few calls (about 15 mins in total)
Then I have a call for 1hr 05mins
I still have 30% remain

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your suggestions.
I tried your suggestion:
When the phone got hot, I removed the battery and then reinsert it(after the battery is cool down). Then the phone becomes fine.
But, the problem happened again and again when I had a call more more than 10mins.
If I don't have any call, the phone will not have this problem and the battery can use around 1 day even I used GPRS to access the Internet.

Hi
If you do a hard reset and the problem is still there then I would use your warranty to get a replacement. If you have no warranty it is more complicated and expensive. It might be the battery or it could be a circuit problem - one relatively cheap the other expensive. You could try flashing another ROM but that might have no effect.

A thing ive noticed is some radio versions can also cause a fair battery drain.. (aswell as 3rd party apps...but a HR would eleviate that problem).. Id try a radio upgrade before resorting to the warranty route??

Hi mrvanx,
I would like to ask which radio rom is better.
Thanks.
Hi Mike,
Thank you very much your reply! The problem is I have no warranty. Also, I tried to exchange the battery with my friend's one. But I still got the problem.
So, I think it could be a circuit problem more than the battery problem. Now I wish WM6.0 can improve my problem. I am waiting the chinese version of WM6.0 now.
Thank you very much! ^_^
All The Best
First off try following my Radio Upgrade Guide, then see what effect that has on the battery life?

Hi asachan,
I have exactly the same problem.... I can pull out battery, then insert it let's say after some hours, then I measure battery current to normal 40ma with radio on, full brightness. And it can be like this for a long time, but usually not long at all, maybe 1-10 minutes, or maybe if I get a call, and suddenly the TyTN starts wasting the battery with currents 300-400ma. I use ACB Power Meter for this. If phone is in my pocket and it starts getting hot, I immediately have to save my battery by powering it off, either by pulling out battery of pressing pwr switch for 5 sec. I am using WM6, have tried most latest versions, and have tried many radios, problem not resolved yet. My phone has been like this from I got it like 2 weeks ago, and I went to the store and requested a new battery but that was not the problem. My first battery went to 0%, big problem to recharge, had to kickstart it with some AAA batteries in serial, huh. Now I have to watch battery all the time, it's a hopeless situation. Will try latest radio 1.43 to check if there's any improvements. If I get a good WM5 I may try that as well, but I do not want that since I like WM6.. if I can only get this device to work normally. Btw, I've also experimented with Bandswitch application to see if that helped, but did not get any further on that neither... next thing is maybe to switch off radio unit, and by the help of an antenna and spectrum analyzer measure if this thing is really readiating something anyway.. I'll do this at work one day I am not so busy maybe. All in all I was very exited to get this TyTN finally, but so far it's been a huge disappointment, it may be a HW error, so if I can't solve it I may have to find some WM put into it and give it back.
@fas73
I see on another post of yours that you have flashed several radio ROMs and with no success.
My gut feeling about this is that the power consumption is so extreme (and this continues even after a hard reset) that it is not something that flashing a ROM (radio or otherwise) will fix. I do appreciate that different ROMs have benefits in terms of power consumption, but this seems so extreme that I am not convinced it's going to be solved by this method, as there seems a strong possibility of a harware problem.
However for those stuck with no warranty, I would follow MrVanx advice and guides.
Mike
Yes, I may have to put this problem into the category "HW error", but the funny thing is that my phone behaves normally when I do this: leave it on and fully charge it, then remove battery for some hours, then start it. Doing this it will always have a normal 30-40ma power consumption, but once battery gets lower or warm during some calls, the phone can get into the high-power-consume state.. I am using Radio 1.43 now and my feelings are it's working better when fully charged, but problem is still present.. I'll see what I'll do..
Just an update to the problem with my HTC TyTN. I happened to purchase a faulty device!!! There was indeed a HW error on my brand new device so I got it swapped with another one that works. Not all problems are SW-bugs..

Pleased you now have one that behaves itself
And yes, you're right none of us should jump to conclusions about the source of the problem. An example of this is the "fading to white screen" problem. I have seen several examples where folks have purchased a new screen but the problem remains.
My very simple rule is that if after a hard reset or two, the problem remains, it's likely to be a hardware problem. (there are always exceptions though, and that', amongst other things, is what this community is for.

Are you saying your battery is dead 1 day after continuously having this program activated? If so, I'm amazed the battery lasted that long! How old is your device and battery? Does the battery charge o.k. when it's plugged to a charger?
Hi Hotdog,
Thanks for your reply.
My device is 1 year old and the battery drains even when the phone is inactive(battery charges just fine).
Before installing NBD, the battery lasted like 3 days (not really an active user of the phone) and now only 1 day.
Am i the only person experiencing this issue around the forums??
Device info:
ROM version 6.6.6.666 WWE
ROM date 8/23/07
RADIO version 02.19.11
Protocol version 4.1.1309
MDA Vario T-mobile AKU2 model.
Thx.

Ive seen many people with this problem. all I can suggest to you is, lower rom numbers on WM6 use up the battery faster. I dont know why that is but that is the trend.
Im not suggesting you go out there and get 2.69 radio rom. the higher you go the more unstable the rom is. all Im saying is, it might be the radio rom mixed with WM6. try a reflash back to wm5 and see if battery is back to 3 days.
One other thing you can try is drain the battery completely, recharge it fully, drain it a second time and recharge it fully again. sometimes when you flash the battery memory gets messed up, it's happened to me once.

Thanks for the reply elmetal!
That brings me to my second question,
Is there a Radio ROM out there for my T-mobile that is stable and runs smooth under NBD 8.0?
What comes after RADIO version 02.19.11? 2.69 radio rom?
I did actually flash back to the original T-mobile NL ROM (latest version)
And there the battery is functioning as expected.
(you can really tell, in the afternoon, the battery is almost at 50% with NBD)
Thank you so much for your help! really appreciated.

hmm.. I never focus much on tmobile users with radio problems, more cingular users. some say the 2.47 works, some say the 2.69 is flawless, I personally use the cingular 2.25.11. it's the stock cingular rom and it works fine.
Im gonna give the forum a good look for tmobile radio rom threads and ill redirect you
I suggest you try the cingular 2.25.11 (being that tmobile in the us uses a lot of cingular towers) since its really really stable.

try that, its a decent thread on the ROM workin in the UK, Im not exactly sure where you're stationed but the point is this, there's probably an existing thread out there.
Only thing is, many different people have many different results. Updating Radio ROMs is a little dangerous for me cus the calls I receive can be very important so I try not to mess with it.
Install a new radio rom, leave your phone in standby for a few hours and test texting and calling to see if itll wake up on its own, some roms wont work well. trial and error
Goodluck!

Point taken
Will do some more research on Tmobile Dutch(Netherlands) Radio Roms to see if that helps.
Thanks for all the effort elmetal!
Nope it's not the Radio Rom 2.19 is the most stable and loses less energy.
The 2.69 radio Has more problems keeping the signal so it uses more energy to maintain the signal, and of course you might lose some calls here and there.
Earlier posts do indeed have the classic basic Battery drain tips.
But what about deleting the items from the Windows\StartUp folder?
Flash a fully loaded battery.
How about borowing my new battery and see if it makes a difference since my wizard is on repair.
Some users even have reported that 8.2 actually was better on the battery then 8.3.
Some believe that it might have something to do with the memory leak problem most Wizard roms have issues with. Keeping more memory reffreshed does require more power. So try to set the weather plug in to only update mannualy set the homescreen to not time out. Or try setting up the included smartskey to overclock instead of Battery status althought i don't think that battery status causes isseus.
Or do a Combo. Drain the battery recharge it perform a hard reset or clear storage. You could also try a lower pagepool rom version, nowadays you can change the pagepool without reflashing. Lower is slower but again it uses less memory. You could also use wizard registry wizard to change the font cache to lower setting and other cache settings.
My advice is to charge as less as possible as my USB connector got ****ed.
I tried the 25.11 on T-mobile network but quit using it as it either froze the ROM or could just not connect.
Or yes you could get another phone
Also make sure you change the settings of the network registry to not automaticly scanning for the network.

I have a MDA and I am running WM6 and using the 2.69.11 radio and I have no problems. I found that changing the task manager settings so that the program actually closes when you click x helps increase free ram and also, don't use any overclocker software such as battery status(it kills your battery and it doesnt make that much of a difference anyways...). Another thing you want to do is disable the today timeout under today settings. that tends to use more ram and thus, kills the battery faster.
See i knew i wasn't crazy about the today timeout
Thanks for the confirm.
I had the same problem with I upgraded to 8.1. Battery drain was pretty bad.. Usually getting home from work, I'd still be in the 90's with moderate texting, but with 8.1 i'd be in like the 50's. I just went back to 7.9.
The problem isn't the ROM... it's the audio manager from HTC, that sucker eats battery like I've never seen... been having this issue too, until I stoped using the audio manager and started using windows media player!

Same here i (as in i didn't actually notice it) but i stopped using the audio manager in favour of WMP as it gave better reactions to using the Stereo Bluetooth headset. As in Audio manager sometimes did not pick up the next and previous commands or would stop playing.
As i said i never really paid attention and i can only speculate that the battery drained faster when i did use Audiomanager.
Just goes to show that closing apps completely is always the best practice.
BTW, dferreira.
Ai's it Funny how one month after your WM5SE release people actually reacted after my post
What is your reason to use WM5 base?
WM5 is the native OS for Wizards... so, I find it to be more quick than WM6... Never gave me problems, like WM6 did. WM6 is just a face lift on WM5 so... I'm trying to make it as good as WM6 but quicker

Battery starting to put off my HD2 love :/

Hello..I am an overall very excited HTC HD2 user but i am having huge battery problems which is why i am asking for your insights In general if phone is idle it can go as far as 35 hours straight without any charging. But when i start playing around with it, browse menus , look through settings, launch apps e.t.c the battery drains like mad..sometimes even 3% in 10 minutes..
i do not know what could be the cause of this in particular since listening to mp3, watching movies does not chalk down too much power,i can even say i was slightly happy in that area(consumption and quality wise)..
so far i have done the below..
-hard reseted
-got a brilliant new mmc (transcend 8gb class 6 FTW )
-flight mode only during nights
-bsb tweaks
-some of the tweaks mentioned in the registry tweak for battery thread (not mmc ones, read alot about data corruption risks)
-tested battery (output voltage and mah are fine and it only gets warm after 3 hours of constant ndrive use-which is normal)
-i never installed anywhere else besides phone memory(apps/games)
-virus free
-i have no data plan so 3g/hsdpa access is not a possibility(also deactivated all connections from NoData app)
-disabled all auto update app functions(weather, footprints, my location ,time e.t.c)
the only possible deal i can figure out its to blame is the radio rom..
As i said earlier i am very interested in hearing your thoughts, comments, suggestions on my issue..Thanks for hearing me out

do you use msn live?
i have the SAME EXACT problem, i do NOT have any apps running, i always use cleanram, every apps always get terminated.
as soon as i TOUCH my phone, the battery drains, this battery is rediculous, i have BsB tweaks with powersaving, i dont beleive how you guys get a full day out of this crappy battery when mine doesnt last 10 hours with just texing/and web browsing. im on my third battery replacement, i conditioned my battery three times and STILL the same problem, i feel like braking this phone in half, im using my blackberry bold 9700 now which lasts me 3 days with FULL usage ALL day, my hd2 is about to see the hammer soon
try flashing it to another rom
I stepped from stock rom to artemis and I use my HD2 often but with the stock rom i didn't even came to the middle of the day but with that artemis rom i can get till next day morning without charging plus it's very stable and i almost never do a soft reset and i use this artemis rom about a month now and i didn't even do a hard reset after flashing
sorry for my english hope you understand me
My HD2 will last 2 days constant usage. This includes web surfing and emails being pulled down all day via exchange.
The battery goes down quick to about 30% and will stay around there for ages.

I had my phone running for 2 - 3 days of medium use. as soon as i signed up for live it was lasting less that a day even if i used task manager. I then wiped my details then it was back to normal again.

With Artemis you can hardly go wrong. It does not flash your radio only the OS part, you do not have to use HSPL but SSPL which is far easier to perform. It's all explained on the Artemis thread itself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=612580
regards, Kuzibri
BTW, if anything should go wrong, almost impossible with Artemis ROM's, then you can always flash back one of the original stock ROM.s from HTC itself (1.66 or 1.72)

hmmm...this is actually interesting...the artemis post seems to be fairly close to stock rom...BUT..if i backup all stuff i got now, will the usual apps (spb backup e.t.c) store everything?like e.g pc imaging apps(acronis true image , paragon drive backup) ? and if they do...and something goes wrong i can restore from pc even if hd2 becomes unbootable?
i really wish there was something simpler than me meddling with flashing :S im more into-system knowledge oriented guy :S

I understand your "reluctance" to flash a new ROM, but to be honest if you go wrong with flashing Artemis Rom, you will probably never will be ready/equippped to flash a new ROM. Flashing a Artemis ROM is as easy as it can be!

^_^ i turned down the backlight to 20% and noticed an improvement in battery life.

mine is set to 30% and with auto backlight off..its the ideal for my taste actually, even for the sunniest mornings
The WLmessenger change did not bear any fruits..i squeezed out all its batt to just see any time difference but nada..
Oh well, i might probably have to get over myself and start the flashing frenzy(i hear its quite addicting )
Byt the by , there is supposed to be a WWE version of 1.7.x this month i believe..maybe i will start with that and if it gets me nowhere Artemis here i come!
i'm just waiting for a 1500 capacity battery... which is all i need...
running full power and and heavy use... i manage to make it home to charge... but still... i would much rather have a bigger battery to avoid some worrying...
1500 would be soo perfect.. that accessory alone would add an extra 3-4 hours of life on my phone.. which would be more then enough...

Hopefully it comes out soon, but I'm tempted to try Artemis at the moment.
By the way i have 1 weird question about all those ROMs..Are they created from scratch from their makers or are they just modified/edited/tweaked versions of the original OS (ROM) that shipped with the phone?
I ordered a battery bundle with a wall charger, 2X1200mh batteries and a Mirco USB wire for $14 bucks. This is my first full smartphone so its hard for me to get used to the battery life.
I turned off all communications to flight mode. Yet my HD2 battery power keeps dropping fast. I dont have this problem with all my previous windows phone. Whats wrong? I'm using factory rom

yea the hd2's minimal battery life is something that i never had to deal with before also... (i've owned other smartphones but usually could last 2-3 days with moderate to heavy use...) but then again.. i never had a smartphone like the hd2 before
regardless... i'm not sure if i'd be willing to carry 2 batteries around with me... granted i could just leave it in my car until its needed.. but i guess i just consider it a extra thing to remember before i go inside my house/ an extra step to complete before i sleep... would much rather have just one 1500mh
Battery Drain
Do you guys experiencing battery drain have Co0kies Home Tab installed?
There is a known battery drain issue with CHT if .NET version 3.5.9198.0 is not installed. The battery drain will disappear when 3.5.9198.0 replaces .Net 3.5.7xxx.
Don't forget to update the registry to activate the new version and deactivate version 2 or earlier version of 3.5!

Some users have had trouble with the battery drain.
I've now added this solution to the first post.
About battery drain:
There is an incompatibility with older versions of the .Net framework that can cause the battery to drain too quickly.
If you have this issue download the latest .Net version from here and install it on your device.
Even if you don't have the issue, it's always good to have the latest .Net version installed.
Big thanks to mike2nl for providing this solution, and to MichelDiamond for tracking the issue while I was away.

Battery getting worse... hardware, usage or ROM?

I got my HD2 around 2 months ago. After some intense fiddling with it in the beginning, I installed one of the Energy ROM versions available back then, and my HD2 could keep working for 2 consecutive days without recharging. Granted, I didn't use too many apps back then, and neither did I make a large number of phone calls... BUT that doesn't mean the phone was in sleep mode the whole time.
Having a fully recharged phone last Saturday morning I decided to see how long it'll hold. I tried to use it as little as possible (this still leaves background tasks, but I'll get to that later). It held up reasonably for the whole Saturday, and at the end of the day I still had something around ~60% battery.
So I locked the phone and went to bed.
And when I woke up, the phone was at 25%. After taking a shower, it was at 20%. The phone wasn't hot (which would indicate that some process is hogging all the CPU), and the Task Manager showed nothing out of the ordinary.
Now, about the only background tasks I've ever been running were Parlingo and Lumos... and I didn't even install Lumos after the last ROM update.
What can I do to diagnose this problem? Is the battery dying? Is the power info incorrect and I was getting false readings entire Saturday? Is this the ROM? What can I do to make sure?
Rule out the battery cheaply by purchasing an eBay replacement... I have 3 of these and they are good stable batteries... and cheap...

Do you mean that Lumos is still running as a background task when it isn't installed, or that you always used to have it running before the problem?

Sorry for the late reply (work work work)...
I mean that I used to have Lumos installed, but in order to try to pinpoint the source of the fast battery drain, I decided not to install it when I upgraded Energy.
I'll try some batteries, sure... But if there are any solutions that I could try and which are free, then I'd rather try those first...

Just wondering which radio are you using ?
I did have the same problem like you and it just keep getting faster that my battery wont even last me over a night .
What i did was i reflash it back to the stock rom with the radio that came with the stock one. I used it for a day and see when its stable , I Flash my radio to 2.10 and till now I am good . Btw I am using energy rom as well.
If your battery is lasting 24hours, then there is nothing wrong with the battery.

I went back to 2.07. I figured the voice quality is OK enough while the 3G towers in Poland are sucky to begin with, meaning 3G switching / range isn't a real issue.
With the 17th July Energy ROM everything seems to have went back to normal.

HD2 HUGE BATTERY DRAIN 1% every 1 minute

Hi my hd2 is on a stock windows mobile rom and has a huge battery drain, every 1 minute or so i lose 1% of my battery and even on standby its the same.
Please can anyone help!!!! I have just flashed a stock rom from sd and have nothing on it and it still does it!
did you flash another radio rom? battery performance has a lot to do with it.
formatting your sd card could also help.
I've tried formatting my sd card and have tried flashing many radio roms right now im on the latest one (2.15...) and still it does it.
well the latest doesn't mean that it's the best for you. it depends on your carrier and area. but this wouldn't result in such a high battery drain.
sorry i can't help you then. i would try to make a freash install with task 29 and everything and if it's still not better try another battery.
Ive tried everything..no one knows anything about it
Thanks anyways
Would appreciate if anyone else has this problem too?
Sounds more like your battery is on the way out. Do you have another you could test?
Yupp, i have 3 standard htc batterys and 2 of them are brand new and still it happens
You did not say how long you have had the HD2, whether this problem has occurred from the beginning, or had just recently started. If it's been that way from the time you got it, it needs to go back to the vendor/seller for replacement. If it has suddenly started, what has changed? Other recent threads here note that a change in GMail was causing problems with high CPU levels and fast battery drain. I believe you said in one response that two of your three batteries have this problem. I assume that one of the batteries does not. If so, it sounds like bad batteries.
Sorry i meant to say that every battery that i try, it still has the problem. And also i brought this phone (used) with no problems and i put android on it, one day it turned extremely hot whilst i put it on charge, then what used to happen was whenever i left my phone on standby (screen off) my phone would switch off. But then i changed my charger cable and that problem was fixed but now i have this problem.
In that case could be the cable not supplying enough charge to the battery, or the phone reading battery stats incorrectly. Other than that I'm at a loss.
Tried everything :/
Thanks anyways I guess its just time for the bin :/

Are you using Gmail? There have been a lot of reports about overheating and battery drain from gmail accounts. Evidently there was some change in the way Google handles their accounts.
Nope, not using gmail
theres nothing on my rom as i just flashed it.
if you flashed it new and the problems started at this point you can try to wipe the battery stats in cwm. don't really now what exactly that does but it's worth a try.

thats providing hes running it and not using a stock winmo 6.5 rom
Yeah, im using a stock windowsmobile rom so no clockworkmod unfortunately..
oh right. there was something with windows on this phone ^^ sorry already forgot that.
Hi, did you try the following?
Switch off the phone completely and then remove the battery for approx. 15 to 20 seconds. Then put it in again and start the phone.
When I used this procedure the battery drain was normal again.
BR rainer
tried that still no luck :/
Take out the sim AND sd card. Maybe one of them is going bad.
