Hi All
I am toying with an application idea from last couple of days. That is an application organizer with folder structure in android menu tray.
With the market place full of free applications, users end up in downloading and having several applications on their phone and its too difficult to find the right one quickly. In the Nokia Symbian based phones, user is able to create a folder in the menu and then drag the applications to the folder. Thus the main screen stays clean and applications are organized more efficiently.
I tried to search for a similar application in market and found “apps organizer”. Though it does the similar thing but on a very basic level. I suppose there is a vast scope for improvement and making it user friendly.
The best solution will be something where we can replace or extend the default menu tray but I don’t think that is possible without any hacks (need comments from the experts) so may be an application which will present a similar UI to default tray and provide all features we might need to make it more user friendly.
Though we are already working on it but on elementary stages and if you guys think its no worth, why should I waste the time, resources and of course money
Any comments or suggestions are most appreciated.
Please let us know about the features you would like to see in it.

I like the Random Access from HTC \ HTC Diamond developed for the Contacts application. Similar to this concept is seen in PCMContacts and iContact (slightly different way but works very well).
I'm no developer, so I'm just sharing this idea with the great minds with you guys. Hope one of you can come up with this.
Now what do I mean?
When you press Start, Programs, what you see are some sub-folders and the rest of applications that you had installed. Many cooks had created sub-folders here, naming them 'Multimedia', 'Utilities' etc. It takes time to remember what are the apps in each of this sub-folder, but at least it is a good step towards solving the problem of needing to scroll downwards to find the app you want. I find it hard to remember what apps are within which sub-folder. So I thought if we could implement 'Random Access' similar to HTC Random Access or iContact, we will be able to get to the location of the app much faster.
Well, what do you all think?
Thanks in advance. I really wish I was a developer and I can get about doing this little project. At least it will increase productivity for many of us who might have tried many commerical apps that tries to give a nice, smooth means of navigating but in the end, realise that it takes many thumb scrolls to get to the app that you want.
If any of you great developers is willing to try out this concept, give me a PM or even answer my thread. Hope this will develop into something useful for the community.
Thanks.
I got the idea to make a application finder software for Windows Mobile. Specially designed to HTC Diamond, with many G-apps & games and other nice apps. It's under development now, and i will release one screenshot for you.
This app will not be just an styled IE-frame, like many "appstore" like apps that have been released before.
19. October 2008:
New Screenshot of the start screen.
Development stopped, becouse of the Gecko project.
I think this is a phenominal idea. The idea that went around recently was an internet based solution through ie explorer and it just was not device friendly. To have a device based solution is much more sensable. If you could create a server that developers could upload their most recent programs too that would be the best.
Maybe contact the system admin on this site and see if he will give your program to access the sites FTP server or something. Then a user could use your device based program that would seemlessly connect to the interenet in the back ground, poll the server for software, sort it and place it into a thumb friendly interface on the phone by which it could be sorted into categories of games, utilities, themes, programs etc etc....
Of course the admin would have to create those categories on the site's side and the developers would need to upload their program to the correct one but I think everyone has been in such a need for this that they would be willing to do it without much arm twisting.
Or, you could create device user interface that interacts with Orb.com... But then you would have to get the updates of programs and upload them to ORB for your program to work. But ORB does already have a sorting feature that your user controls on the device could be made to access for sorting etc. It even has a video section that a user could download tutorials of different programs that someone took time to make.
All just ideas. Some you may find good or not. I am excited to see a device based program though. It make user intereaction easier.

yes
Its a good idea, keep working on it
seems to be a nice idea
I like the idea but this really depends on what will be offered / how updated the actual site behind the store application is. Have you had any thoughts on that yet?
i second that.
at this time i browse via opera tho xda to download stuff... but having a app that simplifies things would be even better...
maybe all the downloads here could be managed and put upto "youre" server in an automated way..
I remember seeing this article a few weeks ago about Microsoft creating their own app store.
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/n.../job-advert-reveals-microsoft-skymarket.phtml
Either way, it's certainly a good idea!!
I forward the notion. An app that has all the apps at hand for easy download by category would kick some serious asss..
If I can help in any way let me know.
Greetings to all.
Love this development. Maybe this progress will open up eyes on new skilful programmers and we will see an increase of good looking apps and games. Not that I don't just love the things going on here at xda. But the more the merrier, right? The only complaint that I might have on this forum is the all the threads with wallpapers and especially the ones with half-naked women...But that's me...
So an app store (or two) is going to make it easier for us to sort out what we are interested in and only that.
If needed count me in I can help develop..
Great idea.
In the spirit of AppToDate, which I found worked very very well. But with YouTube-app like interface, all connected to database were latest apps can get installed.
Great idea!
I'm working to figure out how to connect to MySQL from a windows mobile based device, does anyone here know?
double post****
i think if these two threads could be incorporated
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428480
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433913
that would be a good way to do storage
each developer could use have there own account and then whenever they updated there app they update the wapps link via web or give it like some type of flash capabilities that would be really great
or there could be a generic account that ever one uses to upload too
looks like this is in the works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436127
maybe some collabo might be nice
Nice project!! GoOd Luck!!
If there was a way to advertise this app when it gets made. the diamond would sell millions
Why not just modify a RSS feed reader?

Maybe Sqlite is more accurate for a mobile device ?
And you just download the sqlite file available on a server, this way requests would be very fast.

Yes, every time you start it will update from the web or you can click on a button to update (or an 'update every x minutes' function
please keep up the hard work!!!!! love to see this appstore happen!
I am currently writing an application for my WM6.1 device (HTC TouchHD), and wondered if anyone had come across a site, or if someone could point me in the right direction for finding a nice way of writing 'finger friendly' applications. By finger friendly, i mean being able to scroll with my fingers and so on. Or if there are any open source applications that I can use as a reference?
I don't particularly want to say what application I'm writing just in case it falls to pieces, but rest assured once it's written it will be put up on here!
Thanks,
evorgevol
I have just found this page which does me for scrolling parts of my application. The main thing I'm having issues with is that I want the main menu interface to resemble windows 7 media center, see here for a video of what effect I'm trying to achieve.
I know it's quite complicated, and I'm not the best programmer in the world, but hopefully I should be able to do it??
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,
evorgevol
If I understand, you're trying to create an UI with a scrolling list useable with fingers.
Each item in the list, once selected, let appears different choices about this item (IE : a "Appointment" item in the list, when you select it, you have the next appointment displayed....). It that right ?
Doesn't it look like the new WM6.5 today plugin ? If that's you're idea, I'm 100% on your side to develop a today plugin looking like these menus (WM6.5 / WM7 MC) !
(In fact, I'm already searching if somebody could develop something like this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3375478)
The one I'm doing is not necessarily for a today page, more for my own application, tho it should be able to be easily used in any other application once the code has been written. I just need a push in the right direction for me to be able to write the code in the first place. I'm also deliberating what format to write my application in, and which ones are available. I will only be supporting from WM6 onwards, tho it could potentially be backwards compatible with 5. Ideal would be silverlight being able to be used, but unfortunately that hasnt been released for mobile yet (it would mean that my application should run on any platform that supports Silverlight).
Try iContact. I suppose the code is open. Also try PockeTwit from google code. Install these apps and if that is the effect you want to achieve, I suggest you grab the code and understand it (that's what I would do if I was in your position)
Hi Everyone
I know this question asked multiple times but I still want to get clear if issues I am having with Android can be resolve with some applications
I am a pro user and using phone mainly for business purpose and using windows mobile from 2004. though its not very user friendly but I got used to it and it have very nice feature for business purpose.
After looking at android I am sold to it. and I was using android from SD card to get it familiar with it.
last week I moved to NAND 2.31 Gingergbread. its very much stable but still in early stage.
after using it heavily I found couple of issues and also got a feel its still not mature to use it for business purpose.
here is the list of issues ; if any one of you have any suggestion then please let me know if there is any solution with any app
there is no way to update/add birthday/anniversary to a contact from phone I have to go to Google address book from desktop to update that
no proper file system support or I can say it does not have a proper file manager
no proper association of file or open with functionality
Document viewer and editor missing
Is there any way to change font size to smaller one ; existing font does not looks good
Unicode support to display multiple languages in email , webpages etc
Hi there
not THAT much threads here related to development questions. Now it's absolutly ironic that I ASK this, cause Im no dev and coded the last small tools in C some 10 yrs ago. I'm a complete and definite noob in C++ ... bada SDK is my first contact with C++. I though it's interesting to try some first steps in bada.
Started in SDK 2.0.2. I found out that code examples in Internet relate to bada SDK 1.x and things seem to have changed here and there. After 3 days I was able to understand structurally what I collected together or found in help.
Question: What did you guys face as difference in 2.0 compared to 1.x?
I wasn't able to invoke the app "terminate()" command. What do I need to include/declare? I'm puzzled. this is the most difficult exit function of all languages I know
I had trouble to insert a photo as the splash screen. You guys have difficulties too?
More philosophic question: What do you think of Samsung, that they gave you SDK 2.0 and even started a competition, while there's STILL NO bada 2.0 device ready? So you can only test in Emulator or Remote ... is it normal in this industry that you don't have access to the target platform while creating an app?
Oh, just want to mention: I'm no competition - I'm too uneducated to code - and no time for a serious app.

Its simple, alot of things gone easier.
CustomList, GroupedList, SllidableList, IconList, ... all collected to two types
ListView and GroupedListView, they both are using SimpleItems (Image, Text, Option) or a CustomItem as we devs them wish. GroupedItems are in GroupedListView and saying itself what they does, both lists have a fast scroll option and automatically relocating on need their items. The best autoscroll for bigger text in elements and of cousre the behind Context menu for each item which can be changed in different ways if user slides left or right and so on. Finally to update the list, only UpdateList() is needet not after every change every item as i used in badaSI before.
Than we have the powerfull Gallery that provides all featuers to show pictures as you all saw it in badas Gallary App.
Then header and footer, very nice, devs can so made a good basci gui that looks good integreted to the os, the best function of them are the back button option with its listener, it reduces a lot of time.
My pesonal favorit is the extension for animation class, there you can make every thinkable animation for forms, panels, controls and other stuff, with some code lines. So the UIx is improved and no extra code is needet.
I would rather say that the 2.0 sdk makes c++ a lot of easier to use also for beginners, the api itself is self explaining for what it stands, so it is not like old c++ stuff bada SDK makes many things alot of easier than people think. And of course it has more oportunities than other ... and so on.
Push Notifications and some old unaccessable System Privilegs are now free to use for every developer. Auto resolution takes a lot of work from us all devs.
PThread is addet so porting applications from other oses like ios are much easier, in my oppinion useless cause i am not porting i am writing from scratch.
In a whole overview of the new sdk, a lot of new stuff that makes everything easier, and the old stuff is still in there to support older applications. so no visible changes are there if you see an custom list or a listview in voluntas as example, but the behind things made it a lot of easier and better for memory.
And so on....................
ah, so push noti was there before, but only to priviledged partner dev's right?
Lari, you list is your favourites? What of them will help most often? Header/Footer? Auto Resolution to unite higher and lower lever Waves? Let's see if there's still two separate bada versions for the 2 familys.

So finally I got the Terminate() function up and running ...
In the form.cpp I had to add these:
#include "<myappname>.h"
... to get declaration of my app name
using namespace Osp::App;
... to enable the Terminate function (don't know if the include makes this unnecessary now ... in "<myappname>.h the public Osp::App::Application,
is used as class
<myappname>::GetInstance()->Terminate();
... only with this the function worked.
Is this standard in C++? Help didn't show me this way, and it seems quite complicated for me as a former ANSI C amateur
