I'm trying to get AGPS working on my blackstone and like other people have found if I turn AGPS on the GPS keeps dropping out.
I think this may be because of AGPS settings in the HTC ROM I'm using (HKCSL_WWE_1.19.831.0) having a non Internet routeable server address 10.1.101.63
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS]
"ServerIP"="10.1.101.63"
I'd like to try it with working AGPS settings for Orange UK's AGPS server.
I think I know the server name is "agps.orange.co.uk" but I don't know the port number, has anyone got a phone with a standard Orange UK ROM and could check the settings for me?
The ones I need are:-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS]
"ServerPort"=
"ServerIP"=
"ServerURL"=
"GPSmode"=
Thanks a lot
Peter
Are you still looking for these settings?
I have a vanilla Touch HD ..
Let me know where to find the settings and I will give them to you.
Hi yes still looking for the settings.
To get them you'll need a mobile registry editor either on the phone or on your PC
Then the settinsg I need are in:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
HTC
SUPL AGPS
And the actual entries are (not all of them may exist):-
"ServerPort"=
"ServerIP"=
"ServerURL"=
"GPSmode"=
If you can get them for me many thanks
Hey there,
I'm on a standard Orange UK ROM. Mine is as follows:
"ServerPort"=7275
"ServerIP"=10.1.101.63
"ServerURL"= (not there!)
"GPSmode"=2
Hope it helps!
Ah right thanks.
That probably explains why AGPS doesn't work for most people if they enable it makes the GPS drop out.
The settings look like they're internal test ones used at HTC, the IP address 10.1.101.63 is the same as in a stock HTC ROM so can't point to Orange's agps server.
Thanks for checking for me, I'll have to carry on searching I think
Have you tried agps.orange.co.uk port 7275?
Hi, that does look better after a very quick test, TomTom isn't saying "No GPS device" every few seconds with AGPS enabled.
I'm indoors at the moment though, so I'll have to give it a proper test tomorrow when I'm out in the car
Thanks
No, just tried it in the car and it's still dropping out to "No GPS Device" with AGPS enabled, disable AGPS and it's OK again
Looks like AGPS just doesn't work properly
Thanks for all the help anyway
There are several threads where AGPS has been a problem.
A fix is achieved by the receiver, AGPS and QuickFix. In my view AGPS causes conflict where a low cell tower signal is present. Isn't AGPS achieved by a rough triangulation from cell towers?
Disable AGPS with HD Tweak and let upto date QuickFix data do its work just like it did on TTN6 on other devices without problems.
Get your first cold fix outdoors, stationary and with clear sky would be good. This may take a few minutes. Subsequent warm fixes will be much faster.
The HD receiver is not as sensitive as a SirfIII IMHO but it does work fine.
Yes, I agree AGPS just isn't working on the Blackstone, at least for me.
I've only just got the Blackstone to replace a Kaiser and I've noticed the GPS on the Blackstone gets a first fix a lot faster than the Kaiser used to.
On the down side though TomTom 7.910 on the Blackstone seems to suffer from much worse lag than TomTom 7.450 used to on the Kaiser, perhaps it's just that it's driving five times the screen area perhaps.
The "lag" for me is one second. Which is the refresh rate of TomTom Navigator. No significant difference from my Artemis with v6.
No not select too many POIS for display as this effects the redraw time.
Lag often 4-5 seconds here - Possibly all the speed camera POIs in London, where I live

I have just got it working on orange uk using the following
IP address: 194.51.71.162 - found by pinging agps.orange.co.uk
port: 7275 - looking around the forums, most mobile providers seem to use this port.
i deleted the serverURL key, and my gps mode is set to 2 or 4(this tells it to use cell location and the orange server)
With these settings, my tomtom software first (after about 20 secs) goes to the center of the local orange cell, showing five satellites which are actually the agps "pretend" ones. It then picks up the real satellites and my position moves to the correct gps position. I never had much issue with the position from the standard gps signal, but the altitude reading is now much more accurate, showing the agps is having some effect (no idea why I would need an altitude reading?!?)
Whilst the tomtom software works perfectly, my memory-map software crashes when it tries to load with agps turned on. If another program (ie tomtom) has already initalised the gps, then memory-map also works fine.
I have been reading around and talking to friends about the Touch phone, and could use a little more assistance on enabling the GPS in my phone. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Robbie
have you upgraded to windows mobile 6.1??
if so, then go to start > settings > Phone > Services tab > make sure location setting is highlighted, click get settings >then make sure it is set to on.
that will make sure that applications are allowed to use your gps signal.
then once you have done that,
open your gps, if you use google maps you have to click menu, use gps.
I have upgraded to the official verizion 6.1 rom. My question is, does gps use data? Is the gps a real gps that connects to satellites or is it some pseudo gps that approximates my location by triangulating distances between my phone and the nearest couple cell towers? I don't have a data plan and don't want an unpleasant suprise on my next bill.

Yes, the Vogue has a real GPS antena. If you read through the forums you'll find verizon users have to do a bit of tweaking to get it working.
It can be confusing, because our phones also support "agps". This stands for assisted gps. AGPS uses cell phone tower triangulation to get a position.
GPS has inherent errors, in the aviation world there is a system called diffrential GPS. This uses a ground based system to correct the time diffrential error in the sattelites for greater accuracy. Without dgps you cannot use the gps inputs for a precision approach, only enroute, terminal and overlay. We use other systems such as vor/dme. This uses ground based "towers" to get a position using radial and distance information. This is very similiar to what agps does.
to answer the question does it use data?
the answer is yes.
it has to have a data connection in order to receive the gps data.
atleast thats my understanding, as a data connection does start and maintain during my gps sessions.

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.
thanks method man for correcting me.
i didn't think about it that way. haha.
Also a Newbie
I was wondering whether there was an app that I would need to install on my xv6900 to get the GPS working or do i need an external device like the TomTom Go series to get the GPS up and running.
Any help is much appreciated.

The reason it dont work is because GPS tries to connect one way, i belive its phone as modem. and when you browse the internet, it tries to connect as Sprint PCS.
now i might be wrong in that, but just lisen.
in order to fix it you need to do a registry change. get a free program to edit the registry. like PHM RegEdit.
got it downloaded? installed? good. lets move on.
open it up
click on My Device
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+Comm
+ConnMgr
+Providers
+{7C4B7A38-somethingsomethingsomething}
+Phone as Modem.
go into that setting, make sure that the key AlwaysOn is set to 0
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
go down a setting from phone as modem to
+SprintPCS
the key inside doesnt have to be set to Always On, but you can enable it if you want.
now close it up. count to 20 and do a restart on the phone
next time you try to run any GPS app it should work. use GoogleMaps though.
also while you are in here you can go into ConnectionSharing. a key above ConnMgr. and make it so you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop. the option was removed in the 6.1 update. let me know if you wish to know how.

I called Verizon regarding the WM 6.1 upgrade and they told me to go to Microsoft's website and download it. Microsoft says go to the carrier's website. I'm confused. I'm using a Verizon XV6900 running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Are we talking the same thing? Is there a newer version (6.1) than 6 Professional? If so, where can I get it?
Also, I've read about enabling the internal GPS antenna, which appeals to me, but there is so much info with different instructions, talking about Sprint and Alltel, radios, etc. Is there a good (read: easy) set of instructions for this? Also, a list of the possible problems encountered (function, data loss, etc.)? I don't want to be a pain in the rear, but this is not my specialty. But I could really use the GPS capability with my work (real estate) w/o needing an exterior unit. I currently use a DeLorme bluetooth unit, but its a pain.
Thanks in advance, Jim.

Here is the link to the offical WM6.1 ROM
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
1. sync your phone with Outlook. You will loose everything on your phone when you flash the new ROM. Files on your memory card will be safe.
2. Unlock your phone with 2.31 & refer to the links below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html
3. connect your phone to your computer via activesync & run the ROM file you download. Simply follow the instructions.
4. Your phone will hard reset once the flash is complete. You will have to align the screen & such. The very last screen will ask you to tap the screen to begin using your device. You have to be ready to soft reset your phone as soon as you tap the screen. DO NOT LET THE CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED FOR SURE.
5.Settings--->Phone--->Services Tab select location settings & then hit the get settings button. Make sure Location On is selected.
6. Download the Holus GPS viewer & install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434408&highlight=holux+gps+viewer
post #3
7. Once the GPS viewer open hit the scan button. This will tell you what port & at what baud you GPS is at. It should be com 4 @ 4800.
8. Hit the open GPS button & hopefully you will get a lock.
phone keeps scanning for satellites
Is this normal? The GPS program ran and continues to search for satellites. Its alomst like it can't find any. I ran it just the way you listed. Anything else I can try?
If you are using Holux GPS viewer and you see red dots then be happy your GPS is working. Usually first lock takes longer. try it on an open place hopefully you will get a lock. The red dots you see on Holux are the satellites that your GPS is seeing, Once it gets a lock you will see blue dots and that's a fix. If it continues to flash red dots, I would try closing and opening port once, that wud restart the GPS.
Once you get a lock, use any 3rd party software like Garmin Mobile XT or Tomtom Navigator 7 if you don't have a data plan. If you have a dataplan then you can use goolemaps too.
Hope it helps..

No that isn't true at all,
I have both Tomtom and Igo with map files on the sd card. The phone needs the internet to get the agps information otherwise the GPS programs can't get a lock. It doesn't use much adata at all as I was roaming in the states (from canada) for around 10 days , I used the gps everyday and was only charged under $3 for the whole 10 days.

Here is the update you are looking for, now.... For the love of the lord, DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATION RUN!!!
Update your device as directed in the file, when the device updates and restarts, you will see a message that says something like "Running Customization in... 3,2,1 Seconds" or something like that, when you see that, stick the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device and you will avoid a big pain in the @ss.
EDIT: Oops, i'm too late LOL, didn't refresh thepage while searching the update.
Can't get a lock
I just followed all the steps and installed GPS viewer and could not get a lock. I used the Verizon MR1 rom. Since that did not work I tried installing Valhalla GPS Server to see if that would help. No luck. Any Ideas?

I have data blocked on my phone and the GPS worked fine up until about a month ago. Whatever Verizon did blocked my GPS and I have not been able to get is working since. I can still run GPS viewer and see satellites but I can't get a fix on them.
I have everything working now. Thanks.
Just so I have it straight...
When I unlock the phone with 2.31, do I let customizations run? The ppcgeeks thread doesn't specify, but the atwistedweb thread says let them run. What does 2.31 do? Just unlock the phone so I can install the next ROM? Also, the ppc post talks about disabling USB while the other does not. Is there a preference?
When I install the new WM6.1 ROM, the atwistedweb post says to install it from the SD card, while the this thread says via USB. Once again, any preference?
I understand not to let the customizations run for this ROM and by putting the stylus in the bottom hole it resets the machine. After it comes up again, will the phone be (should be) upgraded and ready to use?
Lastly, if my phone gets "bricked" (I guess that means it turns into a battery powered paperweight), you guy can help me out, right?
Man, all of this just to get GPS and Verizon service. Still nervous! And Verizon won't shut my service off or stop tech support?
Thanks again. Trying to get all the info up front so I don't have to later. Jim

Make sure you have backed up everything. First you need to unlock with the .40 unlocker. Then flash to the sprint pre-GPS ROM (This will downgrade your radio which is said to be dangerous but I have never heard of anyone hurting their phone while doing it correctly. This will also require you to call Verizon and get a new A-key. If they ask you what happened just tell them that you had to hard reset your device because of a bad program. Go through all of their steps and it will all get fixed. You have to call Verizon because you wont be able to make calls.) DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! You'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). As soon as you see that pop up stick your stylus in the reset hole. Then unlock with the 2.31 unlocker. After you use this unlocker you wont have to unlock again. Ok now you flash back to the Verizon MR1 ROM. DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! Once again you'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). Now after you do this your GPS should be working but I was never able to get it to work with the Verizon MR1 ROM. So I recommend using NSFFAN's 6.5 ROM. Now when I unlock and flash ROM's I don't disable the USB thing your talking about. I also flash everything through my computer (USB) and not through the SD card. There is a small chance you can brick your phone but if you do everything carefully and correctly it's a very very small chance. Just make sure you are doing everything right before moving on to each next step. If a phone is bricked I don't think it can be recovered but i'm not 100% sure. Lots of times when there are problems though it's not a bricked phone and just a glitch so if you have anything that doesn't seem right just come on here and ask for help. Verizon won't do anything with your service except fix your phone like I said earlier unless you tell them what your actually doing. I don't know what happens then and I don't want to find out.. What they don't know won't hurt them Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

Oh yes the maps are not on your device they are downloaded!!
Google Maps gets your location from the GPS sensor, but then has to go online to download the actual map data for that area.
so if the map of the area we are in, was downloaded befor then i think there wont be any problem ! i think it would be just like the quick gps software in diamond ! am i right ?
I think that should be a way of download the map and use it offline. Some cracker should make it easy

pretty good for a free app, altho not totally easy to set up as there is no info...

hey everybody, first post here....
i read that i should not start new posts if theres one going already.
I got my diamond about a month ago, its an alltel cdma diamond with original ROM, no registry tweaks, pretty much stock.
the GPS is being finicky. ive tried atleast 10-15 different GPS applications (all freeware or trials) and they are alway hit or miss. sometimes i get a 6-12 sat lock in seconds, even indoors... but sometimes i cant lock on outside even after 15min or more (even if i had a lock on less then 8hrs earlier). Ive been trying to find a pattern to why it sometimes works (certain settings, maybe after a resets, quick gps, etc)
side note, i used the G-Watch app while in poland where i have no phone coverage. it worked perfectly everytime i turned it on with almost instant lockon. but back in florida every program i try sometimes works and sometimes doesnt, even if i turned the phone to airplane mode.
question 1- is this considered normal for the alltel diamond
question 2- does the software that costs money (ie tomtom) work any better/more consistently
question 3 - could there be something wrong with my phone
question 4 - any ideas how to make it more stable
thanx for the help
also, on some of the gps programs, it will say i have found up to 8 or so sats, but wont lock onto any of them...
thanx again

Wait a long time before hard reset... Because it's new positioning for the GPS. Be sure that the place where you search the GPS is optimal for the first reception.
What is your SW version (Radio, rom,...)?
ROM: Fusion V5.2 Sense 2.1
Radio: 4.49.25.17'
it's weird because sometime it works when after hard reset and sometimes it doesn't
Having just started a new job where I am reliant on Sat Nav I must say I think the Sat Nav is absolutey ****ing terrible on this device. So much so that I'm forced to use my old Kaiser to find my way to clients.
If I'd known that I probably wouldn't have bothered buying this.
I know that doesn't help you, but when I saw this thread I just felt like a rant.
Hope you get it working again, as well as it can.
i run quick GPS before i run my gps app... and the new or latest radio helps as well..
Just put it by the window and wait upto 15 minutes. Both my Rhodium and my previous Kaiser always take ~10 minutes to get a lock the first time after a hard reset (even with QuickGPS). I don't know why, but it would seem it's quite normal so don't worry about it. If you're still not getting a signal after 15 minutes then head outside with no tall buildings and try again.
My touch pro 2 GPS sensor seems really sensitive to open sky. It can't pick up any satellite at all indoors.
i'm having the same problem! its weird and sorta annoying.
i have the latest Energy ROM Standard 21864 with the radio 4.49.25.17
can someone help with this problem?
Visual GPSce still works on the TP2, Tilt, WM 6.5.
http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/
It won't fix your problem, per se. But you can see if you are at least picking up satellites, and how well.
Connection settings in Visual GPSce are COM4, 4800 baud.
The most common problem for the GPS not working after a hard rest is "location on" settings. You must have your device set to LOCATION ON and not E911 ONLY.
go to START
click on SETTINGS
at the bottom click on ALL SETTINGS
at the bottom select tab PERSONAL
click PHONE
at the bottom select tab CDMA SERVICES
highlight LOCATION SETTINGS
click on GET SETTINGS
change to LOCATION ON
upper right select OK
Hope this was your problem and helps. Thanks
have you tried Advance Config Tool to make sure agps is enabled?
I enabled mine and get fast GPS locks, especially outdoors.
Just did a reset and got a GPS lock in 19 sec. while sitting in my room. It one if the thing a love about the Tilt 2 over my original Tilt.

I have another thread similar to yours, and I just solved my satellite problem.
there is a setting in your advanced network settings under the GPRS tab, one can choose from two options, either PAP or CHAP for connections settings. Mine was set to CHAP, I then changed it to PAP and biggity bam, the motherf***er worked. I also, tried different radios, but am fairly sure this was what fixed the problem. Give it a shot, maybe it will work for you too.
my gps also don't work since i have installed new rom on the phone. when i open camera and choose gps photo all i see s initializing gps but the process never ends.
Any luck yet
Haven't heard whether or not there has been luck trying my suggestion. I'm curious to see if anything came of it.

GPS has zero to do with your GPRS settings.
I've had the imagio for about 2 weeks not. and can't get the GPS to work. I've tried every reg edit I can't find. Tried useing GPSID.dll rather then GPSID_HTC.dll. I tried installing the GPSModDrivers. Ran QuickGPS. Done Hard resets and half a dozen flashes. Nothing. The only program that works in Verizon's VZ Nav. TomTom, Google maps, Bing never get any sat lock. I'd say it was my phone but my dad's and the floor model at our Verizon store all have the same problems. The guy at Verizon said it was an issue with a lot of them and HTC was working on an updated rom for it. But that could be crap. Any ideas?
You probably have a faulty unit - my GPS always locks pretty quickly.
Agreed. My GPS works flawlessly. I use it all the time with TrackMe.
Never had the first problem with the GPS , works great with Google and Bing maps. Yours Dad's phone must be defective , swap it out for a new one.
Just wondering...
Start/Settings/System/External GPS on Access tab, did you marked
"Manage GPS atomatically (recommended)
If you don't do this, have you tried setting the Com Port Manually? I have a felling that if VZ works that is just a configuration issue.
As a last resource, you could use a terminal program like Token2Shell Mobile (free 30 Trial) to read the Com port "Usually Com4" and 4800 Baud and check the NMEA string coming in, here is a example from mine.

Sorry for the double post working from device.
Keep in mind that some of the things you may have installed to correct the issue may have negatively affect registry settings, sync your contacts and do a hard reset on the device. And do not set up VZ nav when you bring it up.
Then do this:
Install Google maps
Make Sure your Location Setting is "on" in the phone settings. If it is on then toggle it to "911" hit okay on upper right corner then go back into it and toggle it back on and hit okay.
Soft Reset and let boat up completely
Open Google Maps And make sure USE GPS is not checked.
Click "X" in top corner to let it run in the background
Run Quick GPS and select "Download"
Open Google Maps again and select "USE GPS" make sure you have a clear view of the sky and it should take less than one minute to lock
Sometimes a soft reset is required to get a gps lock.
Actually, It is a known issue with the particular gpsone chipset. It's an issue with location caching with agps, but this phone comes stock with agps disabled. However, I have not heard that many complaints on this forum, of course not everybody uses gps. If you soft reset before you try and use you shouldn't have issues. Trust me this is my third HTC touch series phone with this issue (diamond, touch pro, imagio). With my imagio it suddenly stopped having this issue, wierd. I used to use a program called HTC gps tool on my touch pro that would clear the cache for you without having to soft reset each time you might want to do some searching, not sure if it works with wvga screens.

I concur if it was a hardware issue VZ nav wouldn't work.
Sweeny Russ:
I being looking for a program to manage the GPS chipset, I use many kinds of GPS devices for work and it would be the first time I see a GPS device I can't program/manage. Gpsone chipset is the GPS on board device? Do you have a link for this HTC GPS program? I wonder if I can actually program with it...worth asking
One of my friends had the same problem as you mentioned. I asked him to do a hard reset and after a HR, the GPS has been working smoothly. Please try a HR!
I have no complain about my Imagio's GPS because it works much more than I expected. I can get 7-8 sattelites fixed in house, near the window where my old phone Touch HD could not fix any sattlelite.
I'm about to try bastukee suggestion. Giakhoa are you saying do a hard reset after a hard reset?
bastukee This is what I got, any ideas?

Let me know how this pans out. I haven't used this new version but it will allow you to play around with some setting my gps locks instantly so I'm not going to mess with it I just now it works on vga, you might need a screen rotate app to read all settings.
Original Post where I found it is here
Sweeny, Program works nice. it's an easier way to see the data then the program bastukee gave me. But sadly I don't know what half the options do and it still gives me the same date I posted in #12. Thoughts anyone?
That's exactly what you would get when satelites are not being seen, in fact you can't even see a Clock. Once I finish this 3 day trip to India and settle I will try that program and see how my settings look like and post screenies. "I'm a zombie atm"
Thanks for the help. I'm going crazy trying to get this to work.
While bastukee is on his trip, anyone else have any ideas?

be sure ur using com port 4
There's where I got the data that matched the data bastukee showed me. And the one in the settings.
I might be pointing out the obvious but, did you try this outside? After like a minute?
