Streaming Media on a HTC 730 Smartphone; User athentication? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi,
I am not sure if any one can help me but I am trying to access my Web cam in my home from my mobile.
I have a wireless router at home and a wireless web cam. I managed to open ports so that I can access the cam outside my LAN, via IE from a laptop. I although need to authenticate my self to access the cam then. (The cam's userid and pwd.)
This is OK!
But now I am also trying to access the camera from my mobile (Which is suppose to work accoridng to the mfg.)
So I tried with the "Streaming Media" for the HTC but I get an error message:
Server request client to disconnect from the network!
This is I assume becuase I need to authenticate my self????? but does the streaming media have this option?
So question is:
1.Does rtsp also requires authentication and if yes can I enable it in the streaming medai?
2. What other software for a SMARTPHONE could be used which allows authentication?
Thanks for any help
/Martin from Sweden!

Streaming over internet.

Is it possible to access my files / shares over the internet ? Whats the best program to use ? Are there any programs like RealVNC that offer file access options as well as remote control options ? If preferable something with a password that I can save on my wizard so I dont have to keep typing it in all the time.
I have wifi at work so want to be able to access my files that are at home while I am in work like my mp3's. Would they stream ok ?
I think you can stream your mp3s to your wizard if you run slimserver from slimdevices on your home pc and a client on your wizard (though I haven't tried it myself) - take a look at the forums on their website.
Chris
Actually is it streaming ? I just want access to my files, is that one in the same thing ?
Sorry, this is an app which (in effect) enables you to stream (ie play) a music file on your home pc (running slimserver) and listen to it remotely on a client device (e.g. your pda). It doesn't allow you to pick up the music file itself over the internet.
Chris
I can access the shares on my home PC over WiFI using Total Commander but I cant seem to play music directly. I have to copy it across first. It gives a funny error message in WMP if I try to stream it. I will post the error message later.

You would need a Static IP address on your Home broadband connection to do this, not many home broadband packages give you a static IP just a dynamic address that changes at whim.
Presuming you have a static IP you could then get yourself a DAMN good firewall and install Microsoft IIS on your PC to make it a webserver, then get yourself a domain name and point it at your PC. (slightly simplified example above there, but I'm sure you get the drift)
There are probably apps around to do this much sipler but you'd need to google for them. pretty sure that there is a specific version of VNC and PC anywhere that will do what you want

Well I could always just take a note of my pc ip address and as my pc is on a lot of the time it can remain the same for some time. Yeah I thought VNC could do something like that but there doesnt seem to be any option for it.
Static IP, pah!
www.dyndns.org (or many others) give your dynamic IP a static DNS name eg yourname.dyndns.org and then all you need to do is:
1) Manually update your IP
OR
2) Configure your router to update you IP (available on some routers)
OR
3) Get some software to update your IP (lots available, use google)
Now your home network has a static name to access it for any purpose - just change the port on the end
I have web on 80, ftp on 21 and a socks proxy all running - just need to forward the ports on the router
You need ORB!
I use it and can acces all my photo's, MP3's and even movies that are on my home-pc streaming over internet. It works even with GPRS, but with WIFI it works really great.

Isnt there some way of doing it with resco and your ip address ? maybe opening a really obscure port on the router and firewall ? Not sure how those companies work but im a little concerned about my data going through their servers which I presume it is ?
Would just be so much simpler if there was some way of doing it with resco like I do on my home wifi.

vpn compatible apps

the remote desktop client on my vario ii connects to my work desktop perfectly using our office vpn but it is rubbish! the screen doesn't scale well at all or provide any kind of zoom out function.
I have a vnc client which performs much better but it won't connect over the vpn it only works when connected directly to the office network.
forwarding ports is out of the question. so my question is this.
is there a vnc client for pocket pc which will work over vpn or is there a way to make the remote desktop client less rubbish
also are there any apps out there that will let me browse my work network over the vpn. resco doesn't seem to be able to do it even the ftp client won't work.
am I missing something about vpn connections as it seems the only two apps that work over one are activesync and the remote desktop client.
Did you tried to acces domain controler throught the VPN? If yes it is normal that it doesn't work; Domain controler require security enhancement in auth that pocket devices cannot deliver yet. The only way I know is to reduce the security enhancement by using the GPO on the concerned servers; but this is far of being a clean fix.
Just trying to use connect to a vnc server on my workstation. btw our domain controller is the exchange server and active sync works fine
Active sync & exchange do not use the integrate authentification & kerberos; it uses a plain text auth (crypted with the SSL certs), that's why it works. Even if you are on the LAN you will not be able to access your domain's controller shares because of security enhancement.
This is far from solving your issue; but I just wanted to make it clear. Concerning your issue I can't help you at the moment, I still didnt tried the VPN & advanced networking.
btw, good luck
I have set up a vpn on my home computer, no domain, and can't access shares or a vnc server on that either.
Hi Stemill, I seen your other post about the vpn issues with Resco also, I have heard in the past about vpn issues using the [email protected], are you using [email protected] or [email protected]?
I use the terminal/remote client on a daily basis, and it does blow, vj on the board here has made an app that allows fullscreen with the terminal client, and theres a Mocha remote desktop client that supports scaling but no fullscreen, both of which have their own quirks. The scaling makes the text impossible to read when its even at 25%
I have been working on connecting to the remote desktop on mac with vnc, and I've gotten as far as an error on authentification, so I know its possible outside of a home network, but I don't have a clue about buisness situations..exchange or vpn's.
I not even 100% positive about the wap issue, I just seem to remember reading something about it in the past.
Sorry I wasn't of much help, also I kind of have a question for you, I see you mention activesync, you're not activesyncing over an internet connection are you?, I'm working on installing apps that I don't have a .cab for over an internet connection, but the best route I had figured out was to install to a ftp share and then grab the .cab from there with Resco.
Best of luck to you.
Hi there.
I'm on t-mob in the uk. They have a 3g network with full internet access so i'm not using wap at all.
Thanks for the tips about the remote client tweaks. Do you have a link?
I'm using activesync to connect to my works exchange server to sync email and calendar. Pretty sure its not possible to sync over the air to a pc without using exchange. You certainly won't be able to grab remote files via activesync.
If we could figure out how to get apps to work over vpn you could set one up on your pc and (theoretically at least) browse its contents using resco without having to bother with ftp.
If it's not possible to get stuff working over the vpn then you've probably found the best solution already. use ftp or setup a webserver on your pc and host the cab files on that. pocket ie seems to let you install cab files directly from a link.
btw which vnc client are you using on your phone?
Hi, I forget a lot of the time that people here have so many different carriers, sorry.
Here's the link to vj's terminal addon app
http://www.vijay555.com/?Releases:VJFullscreenTSC
And here's the link to the Mocha remote client app
http://www.mochasoft.dk/rd.htm
I used .Net vnc when I was able to get the authentification error
http://www.freewareppc.com/docs/netvncviewer.shtml
I think my problem on the authentification was with the apple remote desktop itself, I read about somethin in the authentification being non standard and sometimes the free vnc viewers don't work..but that was also pc to pc related, the same makers of the Mocha remote desktop also make a vnc client..that was gonna be my next try, I just haven't gotten there yet.
I inistally set up my pc to be able to remote to it from my phone and access aol chatrooms..well mainly one I have hung out in for years, then realized if I set up a server, I could install apps that I couldn't find in .cab form over the net with it, I used to have windows server 2003 set up with IIS(webserver) and the streaming media services, I'm wondering now if the windows streaming media really works with the pocket windows media, and if I could even use it with my gprs/edge connection, I'm still waiting on 3G, suprisingly the remote desktop isn't too bad on gprs/edge.
I'm currently waiting to get a new hard drive before I can really get to work, I'm testing on an old messed up xp install, and half the time I can't even access "my computer" or open folders without it crashin explorer.

SSH Tunnel Client?

i've searched without luck. can anyone suggest a good SSH tunnel client for WM5/6? i want to tunnel from my tytn via cingular 3g to my home pc and then use PIE to access my home media. i do this from work now, but would like to do it from my phone.
btw, i tried zatunnel, which works, but it isn't very stable.
thanks.
mToken
The new version of mToken (4.3 if i am right) has SSH tunneling (SSH port forwarding). You find it at choung networks.
http://choung.net/mToken/?page=download
perfect! works like a charm. thanks.
I probably don't understand the question, but I use Orb installed on my home computer to access files, webcam and other media from any other computer. I can listen to mp3's on my phone from anywhere with PIE. It is free.
not that familiar with Orb, but with Tversity (which i use as a media server for all of my pictures/music/video files) there is no way (as far as i know) to prevent someone on the net from port scanning your pc and copying all of your media content from your pc. with tversity, as soon as you open the port on your home router, you media content is available to anyone that is smart enough to find the right port. there is no inherent login/security mechanism in Tversity.
to prevent this,
1- i don't open the standard tversity port (standard implied deny) on my home router.
2- i open a port for ssh on my home router / fwd to my pc's ip.
3- i use an ssh server to enable a login capability on my home pc using that same ssh port.
then from my phone (for example) i can use an ssh client to login to my pc and point PIE to the ssh port / loopback ip.
like i said, works great.
now if someone can tell me how to harden Tversity w/o having to do this, i'd appreciate it!
thanks.
With ORB you create a password to log on to your system. I think it 's a good app, I first found it reccomended here.
i guess we are getting a little OT from this forum... but your right, Orb has more security. I searched for awhile, but can't determine if Orb supports upnp clients like dlink dsm-320 and xbox media center (XBMC), etc.
in addition to using pie on my wm6 and any remote PC to access my media, I have the dlink connected to my bedroom TV wirelessly and the xbox connected to my 60". from either one, i can stream all of my media content from tversity to my TV's. please let me know if Orb can do that cuz i'll switch asap. thx.
I just thought I'd add that you can use openvpn (open source) on your ppc to vpn over a single port just like ssh. Openvpn has alot more features including persistent connections for automatically reconnecting and is extremely secure. It seems very stable to me using it over wifi to connect home. It will even work over a proxy. I use it to enable direct streaming with orb because with the vpn you are essentially on the same network.
putty mobile
i've just checked my putty mobile installation and there is a tunnel-option.
i can't try it cause i'm not in my home network but you can give it a try
One little nugget I found out last night about mToken is that it doesn't work on WM6
A freind has got a cute little Vox (I think) with WM6 and can't use most the software I use This is a major reason NOT to upgrade for me if my software doesn't work
pocket putty works great with the tunnel option. I've looked tv stream over such a tunnel.

Remote Desktop WM6 T-Mobile Wing help

I have been searching for clarity thru islands of info in the forums as well as the net. Any help directing me would be sweet. I am trying to use my T-Mobile Wing HTC WM6 to control a computer on my home network. I have somewhat knowledge of having the server and client. Have read and installed programs. I want to be at McDonalds *or any wifi spot and log in to home computer. When I have a VNC server running it says the network ip address of 192.168.1.101 but I assume thats because its thru my network. I have went to what is my ip address.com and tried that with the port the server allows in the vnc viewer and had no luck. I think I might be too newb for such an advanced concept. I am somewhat computer savvy to alot of technical terms. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I use messengers if faster communication is necessary. Thanks in advance to any help or thoughts.

a few thoughts,
1. what version of windows are you running. (e.g Xp Home or vista )
as Vista home basic and premium will not accept a remote desktop connection without a 3rd party hack to make it work only business and ultimate support remote desktop
If on XP home be sure to set allowing of remote desktop sessions to be allowed under the system properties area.
2. do you have a password setup on the user account that you log into windows on if no remote desktop will not allow access.
3. when browsing from a 3rd party network ( e.g mcdonalds or over GPRS/HSDPA ) you browse to your external ip not the dark ip of 192.168.1.x i use dyndns.org so i can just browse to the dynamic domain ip which is my external ip of my home pc
4. since you mentioned a dark ip i can only also assume your using a router at home. this means you either use such as LogmeIn/Hamachi and browse to the home pc's Hamachi IP ( e.g 5.5.100.50 ) or you will have to set a port forward in your router to forward any requests from port 3389 to the local IP of the home pc, ( e.g 192.168.1.100 )
I use static ip's in my router at home to ensire that the port forward will always goto my home pc's internal ip address. My particular router from netgear allows to have the ip of a specific machine be assigned the same ip internally based on it's ethernet adapter MAC address. making no changes required on the pc itself other them standard DHCP.
hope this helps.

1. I am using Windows XP Home. I have allowed Remote Access under the tab Systems Tab.
2. I only have a pw on the prog VNC server on the pc but no passwords for windows *should I? :| ... Then I try VNC Viewer the the Pocket PC *T-mobile Wing.
3. I am reading up on the dyndns.org site. I assume I need the free dns service for those with dynamic IP addresses. *i hope I have that.
4. I have Linksys Bef11s4... I believe I can set static ip's though its tricky for me. I am going to try for the pc I want to connect to. This networking stuff gets a little bit blurry for me. I understand that static means non-changing, therefore the pc to connect to in network will have same ip on restarts and things. I am familiar with the port forwarding options *do i need tcp and udp checked?... again any thoughts definately appreciated...
lastly, Do you have any particular progs you recommend for me to do this concept? I have a few installed, but not sure i need all.. I have pocketputty on pda and wm6 rdc... plus vncvier. On the PC i have VNC CLient and VNC Server *believe I only need server. Thank you for your time Cyberjak
1. Just go to http://www.logmein.com
2. Sign up. It's free.
3. Screw Remote Desktop and juggling internal vs. external IP addresses and DNS.
4. Use/enjoy...no work needed.
MJB
Logmein has like 6 choices... I am looking to remote access outside my network... also is this free? I see trials and stuff... thanks for help mjb
have the logme in installed on main and when i use pda it doesnt work...i installed cab and log in fine but when i go to remote the pc it takes my access code and then pops up with error message for menuPDA.html... i cleared history and cookies and tried to make sense of the forums... I am using the T-mobile Wing with WM6.... wierd... willing to try the other way if needed... i guess i could also try loggin thru a pc not home to the remote pc... i believe i saying this remote term correctly but i believe u understand. I am trying to use my PDA anywhere to control home pc.... thanks for help guys... i am willing to try whatever way works...
I've used Logmein on my MDA Pro, Ameo and now on my Vario 3.
You should first try to remote your PC while your sitting next to it. That way you can see any firewall pop ups that may be blocking you.
I have been trying when i am right next to it... I am using my WM6 to connect wi-fi to the internet thru my network.... the pc i wanna control is on my network...
It doesn't matter what network the PDA and PC are on. Logmein uses an internet connection.
yeah, tried a bunch of things to get logmein to work, and it always comes to the page of "403 Forbidden (0x5) menuPDA.html System error: Access is denied. (5)"
checked their forrums too...
guessing i should try going back to client/server manual entry... either way, any advice from you guys much appreciated.... It seems WM6 are known for incompatibility issues with RDC situations.... hoping not the case but...thanks again guys
got logmein working nicely, thank you for the help guys...
Gooer Remote Desktop Service
I am using Gooer Remote Desktop Service(http://www.gooer.com) and it let me access my home PC using laptop or mobile phone.
remote desktop only works, as far as I know, on XP pro & Vista

HD2 and VPN

Hey guys..
I am trying to connect to my VPN so that i will be able to view some webcams i have on several shops.
I can connect to the VPN without no problem but as soon as i open ANY browser (opera internet explorer... etc..) i get disconnected.
Any ideas??
no one?
I have been looking into doing this but i have not been able to even connect to the VPN server at the mo. I will try again later and report back.
Some i found about vpn on usenet with windows mobile phones/pda...
I wasnt able eighter to get it going myself...

I have been using Hamachi and VNC Server. I can access and control my Pc from my HD2 and TYTn.
This combination has worked very well for me. I can watch my webcam from the phone and see what my dog is doing . Besides I can access my shared folders and listen to music, etc.
Hamachi by itself will be enough to establish a VPN connection and access your shared folders.

Hello,
you are writing that you can connect VPN on your HD2. Please, what software do you use? Can you upload it there? Because I want to connect from my HD2 to OpenVPN server, if it is possible.
Thank you for your reply!
Hi,
I use Hamachi as my VPN. Once you install Hamachi on your PC you can access it using the Hamachi mobile client.
Here is the to the Hamachi Mobile Client https://secure.logmein.com/labs/
I use VNC viewer for connecting to my RealVNC server. Here is the link to the original post that took me to the VNC viewer cab. I hope it helps

Hi everyone .
sorry to ask you guys but im new here and im so confused !
can anyone please explain to me how can i connect to a vpn with Hd2 .
i dont see any option to choose that when im connecting to the internet with my wifi connection ,so please help me .
Hamachi is not VPN, it goes through some 3rd party servers, so it isn't safe. OpenVPN should be okay.
a quick clarification to your statement:
google.fi/search?hl=fi&defl=en&q=define:Hamachi&sa=X&ei=-fdiTJGJN4OQjAfU3uCWAQ&ved=0CBYQkAE
the 3rd party server is only use for the initial negotiation of the connection between Pcs.
Hi there!
I've got OpenVPN installed and working perfectly
You can get it here:
http://ovpnppc.ziggurat29.com/ovpnppc-files.htm
I installed the german 2.1.0 version. Works almost perfect.
The only thing is, i have to disable htc sense to see the small icon located in a kind of task bar on the bottom of the screen. Does anybody know a workaround to access this Icon without turning htc sense off for the home screen?
This would be perfect.
Best regards
