Hello all,
I have just got a Orange HTC Hero (uk), and wondered what the limitation/differences are between the Orange firmware and the Generic firmware?
If I wanted to change the firmware to generic, would it be simply a case of rooting the phone and flashing a generic ROM?
I think the only difference is that the Orange firmware will include any changes that are needed to operate with the Orange network.
I have not found any limitations at all.
Unless you need to use another operators SIM, I wouldn't worry about it.
I switched from the Orange ROM that came with the phone (v1) to the rooted generic version of 2.73.
The only things missing were
- the Orange splash screen on boot up
- the Orange bookmarks in the browser
That's it - even the APN setting were intact.

Unbranding vodafone S300
Hi a4d2,
You just have to unlock it with SIM_CID_Unlock_V1.zip.
With it, you can also flash the ROM. After that, you can use any other SIM, from any other carrier than Vodafone, and also flash it with any other ROM, or Rom Upgrade.
I have tested it a few weeks ago, and now my vodafone S300 is working fine, with another carrier, and an upgraded ROM, as if it was buy as a free terminal.
Good luck!
I got Vodafone Device from Spain and flush with New ROM. Works fine with any GSM operators here in India.
SIM_CID_Unlock_V1.zip worked fine for mine, too.
My vodafone compact GPS was not locked. Using it with a O2/Alice SIM since day one after delivery and works perfect.
The branding is limited to the welcome screen and printed logo on the case. I have not yet found any other limitation.
Hi all, After searching for ages, I finally came across this site which seems the only good site about for this topic. I recently bought a Orange SPV M3100. It has orange software and mobile windows. here is some spec that it says: Operator version 14.123.1.614, ROM version, 1.23.61.4, radio version, 1.13.00.00, and protocol version, 32.49.7018.00H, and model no. HERM100. My question is, that I'm a vodafone user, and I managed to download a programme and unlock the phone so I can use my vodafone sim. However, it still had the orange software on it. Is there anyway I can upgrade it to have the vodafone software on it? Also, I'd like to have the newest windows mobile version 6.1?. Many thanks if anyone can help.
Hello, this is my first post and I am glad I joined this brilliant community with so many helpful people and resources.
I am getting a Blackstone in the next 24 hours from Orange UK and wanted to ask if the Orange device has the same programs and versions and no difference at all as the retail version (sim free, WWE, etc) that can be bought from other vendors.
And also wanted to know if installing the ROMs that are designed here would do the debranding of the Orange UK device. If the ROMs don't do that - and the Orange HD is different to the retail version - what should I do to debrand my new HD to make it similar to the retail ones? ( I know that flashing them will not unlock the sim).
Thanks.

Welcome to XDA-Devs. I am not in the UK so I can't speak specifically about the the Orange HD device. I purchased mine from a retailer which was the HTC Touch HD with no mobile branding. This phone is not sim-locked to a mobile carrier so I can use whichever GSM carrier I so choose.
Typically phones "branded" for companies are cheaper and at a reduced price. Once you flash a ROM however all the Orange software, etc. will be gone. You can flash a shipped WWE HTC ROM version if you like and get all same software that I had on my phone.
Just make sure you have HardSPL on you device before you flash.
I highly recommend you try one of the cooked ROMs on XDA after you play around with your device for a while.
Thanks for your reply.
I was asking about the differences between Orange branded ones and SIM free ones because usually Orange have made changes in the previous original devices the sell and they become very sluggish and take off some factory settings and features.
I read about installing or having the HardSPL and understand that I need to use it and then install or flash a ROM. Just will need some time or advice on which ones to choose to have or at least a preview or some pics of how the device works or looks after each of them.
hello:
welcome to Xda.
i am in US and i got my phone from UK. it is unlocked, unbranded version. it came with europe version stock rom. there is no special software in it. i also tried orange uk version rom. it has exactly same software in europe wwe rom.
so you dont have to worry about the rom. they are the same.
Thanks for the replies.
I just got the HTD HD from Orange UK today and it seems with this model they didn't make any changes to the original OS - at least it looks like it.
I have been reading about SIM unlocking for the HD in another thread and wanted to ask if it is ok to SIM unlock and if it will remain unlocked after using HSPL and ROMs created here. Or should I go for the HardSPL and ROMs first and leave the SIM unlock for last? Also wanted to know which HardSPL and ROMs are the most used or prefered by most people in the forums so I could know which one to go for.
Orange HD
i also have the orange - not so bright - Touch Hd
there is no network branding or software on the handset - luckily for us

Once you SIM unlock it will stay that way. It can't be reversed by flashing another ROM.
Hi
A friend of mine has given me an Orange SPV M600 as he's upgraded.
He's had the handset unlocked by Orange, so my O2 sim card works fine in it.
Just wondering how I can debrand the firmware and just have the unbranded factory firmware on it?
And could anyone help me to set it up for use with O2 pay and go GPRS and MMS settings?
Many many thanks!!
Debrand
Hiya,
Debrand meaning you do not want to see the Orange startup screen right? Then you will need to change your ROM to one of the stock ROMs. Please refer to upgrading ROMs section of forum for low down on that. Loads of better ROMs to try from too.
Cheers!
I can't find any info regarding the differences between the stock and the branded roms ( eg: Voda ).
So basically is it just the boot anim, and some custom colours, or is it any other differences? And if there is not, how come that the stock legends get updated later then branded? HTC just want to keep some of us waiting even if it's completed already? I'm on cyanogen, but the holding back still strange.
No difference . But for the Vodafone update , Vodafone has to approve its release but the unbranded ones require no such approval . HTC is just messing with us.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
Does the Voda have details for international providers, so when you get off the plane and stick a local sim in it knows the apn settings etc ?
Thought that wasn't included. I did a hard reset on a Voda UK Legend and it came up German not WWE
