Hi guys,
Am about to purchase a KF tomorrow, but I wanted to go over some things quickly.
I know to use this in Canada, such as amazon prime (which I'm not a member of anyway) I have to have a VPN from the states. If I don't use a VPN from the states, am I still able to use the Kindle, or will it stop me at the registration page? If I have to use a VPN from the US, how hard is it to setup? I share my router with my family, would that cause issues?
Assuming I can avoid the VPN route, I would like to root my Kindle to have access to android marketplace. Once I route it, will I be able to access android marketplace instantly, even if I don't have an american VPN?
And finally, am I able to transfer stuff to kindle, such as books from mediafire that were free, and mp3's without having to go through amazon? Do they have their "desktop manager" for the KF or something?
Sorry for all the questions, been trying to do some research and just wanted clarification,
Thanks, any help/advice is appreciated!
Canadian Kindle Fire user here.
To answer your questions, you can definitely register the Kindle Fire easily out of the box with Amazon. As far as I know, they do not care what IP you come from during the registration process. Once you register, your KF will show up on your Amazon.com page under Manage Your Kindle. So simply put, registration is a breeze.
The KF does not have the ability to connect to a VPN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376742) but I have read that a lot of people have been successful with Unblock US (http://unblock-us.com/). As I understand it, they use DNS masking rather than having traffic route through a VPN. I haven't tried it yet but they do have a free trial so there's no risk. I am holding out for a VPN solution because I have already paid for a VPN service. Assuming Unblock Us works, you will have access to Amazon Prime (theoretically) and Netflix US. I do know that Netflix US does check for a US address on your credit card before allowing you to register ... I assume Amazon Prime does the same but your first month is a free trial so there is no need to verify a US address on a credit card as you don't enter it when registering. I would assume that when you go to renew, you will have to find a work around in order to allow Amazon to let you register/pay for Amazon Prime.
I tried sending a PDF to my KF yesterday using the provided email address [email protected] but I have not received it. Not sure why that is ... I have a 2 other Kindles so I know it's not a 'I'm an idiot and don't know how to use the Kindle interface' ... but you can definitely use a USB cable to transfer your content over. Alternatively, you could easily set up a Dropbox account and install the Dropbox apk onto the KF and get content that way.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Everyone in Canada is stumbling their way through this so remember the novel that I wrote for you and pay it forward when you can help a forum member. Cheers

Jayce, thank you so much for the info!
I have some friends who are in the same boat as me, but your info is a huge help and convinced me to purchase the KF.
Will probably send you a PM if I have any questions and will forward your post to anyone who asks a similar question.
Thanks!
Sure thing. No problem but if you have a general question that might benefit the community, feel free to leave it here.
Canadian Kindle
I bought mine a few weeks ago, rooted it, installed Google apps, and basically made it an Android tablet. it works like a charm, GMail, Maps, Market, Calander (synced), Go Launcher, and Titanium BU.
It took some reading (XDA), ADB, and some learning but it works; I still can't buy software from Amazon but I can buy it from Google Market. I can however buy books from Amazon and read them on my Kindle App. Most of the time I download the app onto my Razr, and then send the apk file to my Kindle using Gmail.
All in all I am very happy with it.
Bought the kindle fire, rooted it, love it so far!
The only issue I'm having is that I downloaded the android marketplace app, after rooting it, but it simply says "you must add an account to use this device..." to which I say yes, and then it boots me out back to the home screen.
I tried looking up videos on how to install android marketplace (vender apk, root explorer all installed) but still no luck.
I also grabbed the Go Ex Launcher, but can't figure how to access my videos folder.
Great device though, so glad I picked one up

Try following the steps here:
http://www.kindlefirewire.com/2011/11/17/how-to-install-android-market-on-kindle-fire/
This worked like a charm and assuming you used Super1Click, it should be very easy for you as well.
As far as videos go, I use MX Video and it automatically discovers videos on my SD partition. I load them into my KF using a USB cable.

Hey guys,
I am from Canada too. I ordered the KF the day it was launched and it was shipped to my cousin's US address. He mailed the KF on 21 Nov and I got it last week.
I was disheartened that KF didn't support Amazon Prime & cannot download apps

You will be able to use the KF like any other Android tablet to read email, internet browsing, running android applications and play games. However, without rooting, you have to side install applications. This method is not friendly. To be able to install applications to install from Google Ply Store, you need to root the KF. There are some simple guides available in this XDA forum that are good for you to read to explore deeply the KF as a wonderfully android tablet. Here is a link to one of many simple guides:

So i think I'm going to go upgrade to this phone. Currently on unlocked bootloader droid maxx. Only thing i really need root for is chrome cast for NFL Mobile. Does anyone know if there is a work around (patch?) that doesnt require root to hide chromecast from the running apps or some other way so that NFL Mobile will still work with stock chromecast running? My current solution (using 3rd party screen share) requires root for audio so i am pretty sure that isn't going to work on droid turbo. Just wondering if anyone else casts redzone to their tv and is also looking for a workaround/solution using droid turbo.
Thanks
Amazon firestick
I just cast my entire screen
How do you cast your entire screen?
You can't do this anymore, NFL mobile patched full screen cast just in time for TNF moving back from CBS in Week 9. You'll get audio from TV but no video. Currently unaware of a workaround. Allcast is similarly disabled.

Do you guys have any suggestion what to do? This guy was able to make XFINITY TV GO app work with nexus player.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/help/xfinity-tv-t2994121
But, I tried sideloading this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xfinity.cloudtvr&hl=en), and I can't make it come through because it crashes after I logging in. Please let me know if someone could make this thing working. I just got my nexus player, and this is my sole reason why I bought nexus player. Thank you in advance guys
It works. I think I got my apk from that thread. The only thing it seems is the app is kind of split in two Live or OnDemand. I couldn't sideload both. I chose the Live as I watch more stuff from there.

That's an XFINITY TV GO app. I wanted the XFINITY TV for X1 users because it lets you watch THE ENTIRE TV package you have haha! Idk why there's two apps brought my xfinity. However, the xfinity tv for x1 users (without the 'go' word LOL) has more features.
Hello Everyone!
I have been able to get my Xfinity TV Go app working on the FTV.
1. Download the Xfinity.apk [Mediafire]
2. Buy or Download the "Mouse Toggle for Fire TV" [Google Play - $2.99]
3. Install Mouse Toggle on an android device (tablet or phone) and make sure you are on the same network as the FTV stick.
4. Follow instructions on the Mouse Toggle app (EXTREMELY SIMPLE)
5. Install the Xfinity.apk to the FTV via ADB
6. Open the Xfinity app on the FTV
7. If the Mouse Toggle installed and is running QUICKLY double tap <PLAY/PAUSE> and you will see a cursor on the screen. Move it with the D-Pad and select Username/Email
8. Login with your Comcast Account
9. Profit?
I have done this and it 100% works! It is still a bit of a pain to have to switch to D-Pad mode to scroll and the Mouse Mode to select but all in all it works!
Thanks and any comments/feedback is greatly appreciated!

Yes you could but not everyone has a Bluetooth mouse. And for a cheaper one is 5 to 10 usd while the app is $2.99. Also it is easier to just use the supplied remote instead of multiple devices.
But to each their one.
@AndroidDeveloper4Life
Great guide write-up. Been using the Mouse Toggle since last year. Once you get use to it. It will become second nature to switch back and forth.
Are any of your FTV's rooted ? If so, is XFinity blocking playback on rooted devices ? Are you live streaming from XFinity on a FTV Stick ? Is it smooth? Asking because the ATT Uverse app has been pain if your rooted or overall too.
Thanks.
I do not have a rooted fire tv stick but will get one of the 3 in the house done soon. But it is great quality live streaming (about 1 min behind normal cable). Looks great almost HD quality. We have the 2nd step plan on the Cable (sorry it doesn't give a name online), and we also have the sports addon and everything works great. Of course it will take a min for it to reach HD quality upon loading a channel. But have access to 70+ channels and probably like 90+ if we had HBO, Showtime and all that. But it works great! A he|| alot better than Kodi live tv!
I have a rooted Fire TV 2 and the Xfinity apps work fine for me. Been using these apps for months now,

Great, will get an account from a friend to try it out. Haven't tried XFinity for close to two years. Glad they got their act together.
Also my bad experience might also be due to FireOS 3 vs FireOS 5. Since all my rooted FTV's are 1st Gen & are still on FireOS 3 waiting for an update.
Tried Uverse on a stock FTV Stick but there where still problems with both Amazon & PlayStore versions of the app.
What version of the XFinity app are your two using?
The Xfinity apps are great but it would be nice if they had D-Pad/button support. Like stated earlier, get that mouse ready!

Have been using & am used to the Mouse Toggle for Fire TV app since Nov. of last year. So no worries if a mouse is needed. Used to have some Logitech M325's hooked up to my 1st Gens. Don't anymore. I really like the scrolling options of the Mouse Toggle for Fire TV.

So does this really work on a nonrooted firetv stick running any software os3 or latest os5? Does it continue to work today( a couple months later)?
I'm trying to find out if I need a rooted ftv to play xfinity tv go app or is any nonrooted ftv1,2,or stick fine?

The one that accesses the X1 DVR?
Today I tried installed the latest Xfinity app since the old one has been discontinued. When I try to launch it a black screen shows for a few seconds and goes back to the app list. Has anyone had any luck getting the latest version installed and working?

The tv go app still works, it just gives you an error on the home screen. You can still go to Live and search for content to watch. As far as the xfinity tv app goes you'll need to find an older version like 3.2.0.016 which works.

I know it still works, but is there ever going to be a time that it doesn't? It appears Comcast made the new app not function on a firestick or something. A little disturbing for the future...
So when I go to live tv now in the app all the channels have been removed and it says to get the new xfinity tv app and they have stopped supporting xfinity tv go.
I installed the latest xfinity tv app but it just ends up crashing every time. Any help?
Just install Kodi and then install the Exodus add-on.
You'll be able to watch every tv show and movie (that I've searched for) for free.
Also in better quality than Comcast. I have the X1 box and it looks like 720p resolution.
The difference is clear when you stream Amazon or Netflix at 1080p.
This doesn't answer the question at hand and yes it is another solution. What we are asking here is has anyone been able to get the current xfinity tv app to work on the firestick?
I actually got the new xfinity app to work on my fire tv, BUT i can't log in because it says you need internet explorer to log in. I used version 3.2.0.016 and i also tried the two versions after this version and they worked, BUT will not let you sign in your account. Is there any way i can download the app log in on my computer and then side load the app to the fire tv. I'm sure someone will figure this out. the tv go said they are not going to have it anymore, you can still watch some on demand movies on it, but no live TV.
Hey guys. Does anyone have a working apk of the DirecTV app for the Nvidia Shield Android TV?
It looks like it has HDMI protection and just fails to stream. Has anyone been able to remove the protection on the .smali file that has it?
What is the exact error that you are receiving? I use to be able sideload a Direct TV apk for either the phone or the tablet but now they have stop working. When it worked fine it was amazing. I was able to watch my subscribed premiums. I think we need to incentivize developers to find a means of allowing functionality through our Nvidia Shield. I will pledge a 300 bounty for the first person that finds a work around. There are many gifted people on this forum and as a whole we can solve this issue.
Any luck with this?
Not sure if it's an HDMI block because if you notice certain channels do work (local NBC works for me as well as ESPN channels). I'm inclined to think the device isn't giving the proper location access to the app thus forcing the error for most channels. Just my 2 cents.
I experimented with a custom ROM yesterday and the DIRECTV app worked great on it. I don't think the app has an HDMI block, I think it's more that the stock rom restricts the necessary permissions or location requests.
What android tv box are you using? Are you using the latest directv version (phone or tablet)? What custom ROM you use?
I have a shield TV and I'm using zulu99's full android marshmellow firmware. There isn't any controller support so you'll have to pair with a mouse/keyboard but pretty much all apps work on it.
Hey guys, I am in the same situation. I have found two other threads on the issue. It is definitely not an HDMI issue or a WiFi issue. Someone has tried to fool the app on what device it's on and it worked but it was too much work. There must be a simpler way to achieve this.

Hi, DirecTV Now app is not in my Google play store ! I'm using Nvidia shield TV. Any reason why it's not showing up ..
Thanks
I would love to use the DirecTV Now app on the nVidia Shield too. I extracted the APK from the app I installed on my Pixel XL, and loaded it on the Shield, but I get the following error:
failed to connect to aeg-umsgw.quickplay.com/23.101.201.149 (port443) after 10000ms
Man, life would be good if they'd release this app for the Shield.
Ok, so I was able to extract the Fire TV .apk file and sideload onto my Nvidia Shield TV. I was able to open it and navigate using the standard Shield remote. The only issue I am having is playing live TV content. Sometimes it loaded fine and other times it gives me an error and telling me to Refresh the content. Seems to be very buggy for Android TV. Here is a link to the extracted .apk file. I would like to see what you guys get trying this out.

It seems there is some confusion and contusion between the DirecTV apps. The hot new toppic is about the DirecTV NOW service. I ran the search on APKmirror and it seems what you are talking about is the older app for DirecTV satellite service customers.
http://www.apkmirror.com/?s=Directv&post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk
I am referring to the DirecTV app that is for satellite customers, NOT the Now app.
I was able to download the tablet version of the DirecTV app and use it on my Nexus Player running stock 7.1.1 system, but you have to use a mouse; the app is designed for touch input and while you can sort of use the remote, there are a bunch of things you cannot press without using a mouse. Still hoping for some official support at.. using a mouse isn't ideal. Here is the latest apk file: updated 11/24/2016 v. 4.9.010
http://www.filedropper.com/dtv
Resurrecting this old thread. Do you still use the directv app on your shield and is it working ok? Do you have a more recent apk you can share? For anyone reading this I am looking for the DirecTV app NOT the DirecTV Now app. Thank you!
