I tend to have 70-80mb free, I use task panel a bunch to kill all backgrounds apps once I get down to 40mb or so.

I was about to make a new post asking for help for this...
I have a mytouch 3G.
When it was stock, the available ram varied from 20 to 30 MB.
At the moment I have Cyanogen 4.2.14.1, and my ram varies from 15 to 24 MB.
My info from system setting:
Baseband 62.50s.20.17u_2.22.19.26i
Kernel 2.6.29.6-cm42
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-4.2.14.1
Build DRC92
I thought this was supposed to speed it up, and not slow it down. Moment it drops down less then 22 MB, it slows down considerably.
The rebooting time is very high, and the only Widget I am using is Power Control. I would like to use calendar, and Retro Clock and weather or something, but cant even think of it, due to how slow it is.
I am using App2SD, and so I was wondering if anyone help me out and give me directions as to my next action.....

Android is NOT Windows.
This means Android is supposed to use as much RAM as possible because Android is Linux-Kernel based, meaning Android properly and correctly handles RAM. It uses as much RAM as possible so every program that is running runs faster, it does not mean the phone is slowing down with less RAM. You guys have to get it out of your head.

Thank you very much for your insight.... Please tell me how much RAM do you have left when you are running your system?
Yes low RAM does not mean that phone is slowing down.. but when at 19MB you start noticing your keyboard doesnt act properly, you are not able to open apps at the same speed that you were before when it was 25 MB... I believe that means its slowing down....
Or maybe I am just assuming things.....

I have 28MB of RAM left on average and that is with these running:
- Facebook App
- AK Notepad
- Browser
- Alarm
- Footprints
- Gmail
- Google Maps
- IM
- Mail
- Peep
- NetCount
- Stocks
- Weather
- People Widget
- And a few more.
The keyboard does lag sometimes but it's due to Android catching up and removing an app from RAM I believe. That's when it speeds up a bit.

Hence the reason why I was questioning this, and if I need to do anything to correct this.
I wasnt looking for 40MB ram or anything. I would just like it to run good with a few more things.
Moment I opened up Google Maps with the above, my Ram dropped to 18 MB and it slowed down that I could not even add the TO location for a while...
So again I ask, if I desire to reinstall the ROM etc, would someone please help me out with the steps, or direct me to it. Keeping in mind that I have App2SD. I would rather use another method then reinstalling the ROM.
Currently using Cyanogen 4.2.14.1 with Cyanogen latest recovery image.

Even with all those things running, if I don't need my data enabled, I disable it. When you open Google Maps it tires to find your location, download map data and upload data. Even though mine is running, when I'm done with it I disable my data so none of my apps can slow down my phone by downloading/uploading.
I'm curious about this too if anyone could help, my phone seems to run really slow and often only shows around 25 megs free.

Check if you have a 32A or 32B board first by going to the boot menu (Power + Back); if you have 32B then there is a reason why it's running so slow -- you have 50% less RAM overall then the 32A boards.
If you have 32A then disable GPS, data, bluetooth, anything after you are done using applications on your phone. Remember that applications run in the background and that means they actually still use all your wireless communications. Since your phone is receiving and sending out data it tends to slow down and feel sluggish.
If it still feels slow or you don't feel like turning off your wireless communications then use a task killer. Make sure to ignore ANY application that does not use wireless communications (ie, Clock, Alarm, HTC sense, Touch Input) and once you are done using an application like Gmail, you can go into task killer and kill the task. Just make sure not to use the widget because now the task killer application is running all the time in the background, monitoring your whole phone, it will drain the battery a bit faster.
I purchased the new MyTouch 3G 1.2 last Monday and installed approximately 60 apps on it and my available memory is at 235! And I must say the battery lasts me a full day with all everything on and heavy usage! I'm diggin' this new purchase!

Installing and running are 2 different things. Installing an app does not mean it is running in the background and using memory.
I'm also surprised that you have that much available memory with heavy usage because that seems impossible if you are opening many apps. You are looking either at false info or not reading the information correctly.

Just went into settings/SD card & phone storage/ and it states my internal phone storage has 233MB available!

Yeah, I have a 32b. So pretty much 25 megs of free ram is what I should be expecting then?

That is not RAM -- that is the amount of space available to install updates/applications on initial phone STORAGE.
This topic is about phone MEMORY. You can only view it with a third-party application from the market.
You read the information wrong and you posted something that is irrelevant.

In short -- yes.
The 32B board has 192MB of RAM compared to the 288MB a 32A board has so you can expect the phone to run a bit slower.
So, I'm running Cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1 but I always think it's a bit slow. Maybe it's all the widgets, installed apps or often having mp3's playing in the background but I can't help thinking that the original ROM was much faster.
What can I do to improve speed?
I'm running TasKiller but that alone doesn't really speed things up enough.
For music, I'm using Meridian player, but perhaps there's a faster player out there?
Is it worth installing any of the 2.1 ROMs or should I wait for the official release or is that even likely to be slower than Cyanogenmod?
A couple of things you can do. You can use an application called setCPU which is for root users. It allows you to modify how the phone is run e.g. it can run from 128MHz to 528MHz depending on your preference. 528 will give you the highest performance. There is a min and max for them, and I have 384 to 528 usually.
Instead of taskiller, I use advanced task manager. Kill some processes as well. I like it better at least.
My recommendation is use superD or FastTest. They are, in my opinion, the fastest ROMs out there. A lot of Eclair ROMs are stable as well, but not as fast as the donut ROMs.

I've always thought that setCPU didn't make a difference, cause it's Magic is already running at max CPU in most ROMs. If not, how come it's mentioned so rarely around here? Surely it should be one of the most popular apps?
I've never heard of Super D or FastTest til you mentioned them. Might be worth a shot, although I'll have to admit I'd prefer not changing ROM all the time. When I first got the phone I tried loads of Sense ROMs but they all seemed either unstable or slow, or both. I think I'll read up a bit more on SuperD before having a go.
dont really have any other info on your setup except its a 32B....why not give us some more info in your signature, like:
what size and class SD card you have
whether you have swap enabled
whether you have compcache enabled
whether your sdcard is partitioned, and how
IMHO u dont need setcpu, its already written in to CM for the cpu to be 528-384

That 10 MB hack sounds interesting. I'll give that a shot.
I actually use setCPU profiles to save battery as well. When the screen is turned off, I have it set for almost minimum.
SuperD and FastTest have 10MB RAM hack versions so you don't need to install it on your own I don't thnk JIT hack is necessary for these ROMs anyways.

I got this just do as I do on my magic
Cyanogen is good for tons of features & I respect Steve (the ROM developer) for the ROM but for full speed & stability on a 32B Magic I suggest going by my signature as a guide.
I'm using Meridian player also & find it the best but Mixzing or Tunewiki is faster Mixzing has a little more then Tunewiki though but Meridian player is the best overall for the features.
OK in regards to ROMS, flash a new one all this talk of setcpu & stuff merely provides a quick fix but doesn't help in the long run (at least in my experience on a 32B Magic).

Backup your apps & stuff & do a nandroid just to be safe.
Now proceed to enter recovery like your about to flash a ROM (as soon you will be ) wipe all that can be wiped (use Amon_RA Recovery for that) & flash Dwang like you did Cyanogen
Load it up (first start up is the longest), set up & when you hit the home screen power off your Magic & then switch it on into recovery like you are gonna flash a ROM (there it is again).
Flash Pays Black Elegance 1.1 Theme (NO WIPE!!) just flash over Dwang once that is done reboot & then try it for a week & report back here with your verdict
This is what I'm using & have been for over 2months now & I don't see me switching anytime soon as I can't find anything that is éclair that is like this ROM.
YES its 1.6 but it is super sweet for a 1.6 & personally for me it beats those 2.1 ROMs (which are good don't get me wrong but they ain't no Dwang)

15-25sec wait on home screen load at times but not always & that is only cause I use like 12 widgets & filled 4 of the 5 screens with icons to applications.
10MB Hack is on this so 3D Games are a little laggy otherwise overall the best ROM i have used & only 1 random reboot but I kinda caused that running a whole heap of stuff like 30 processes at once haha.
Anyway let me know your verdict I hope my tip helps!
From my experience, super d 1.10.2 was, by far the fastest rom i've ever, used i havent messed with swap or compcache, but super d truly gave me that wow factor when it came to my phone, only downside is that it sorta ate my battery real quick, and i changed back to 1.9.3 wesgarner kernel, which is pretty quick too ...
Use Dwang 1.17.1, buy CacheMate from Market and clear your cache weekly.
This is the fastest I can get my 32B to run. I've tried Super D and CM, they are slower in my opinion. Dwang includes 32Mb compcache by default which seems to be the sweet spot. I've never played around with swap on SD card.
I use the default music player with Pure Music Widget. I used to use some other music player with "genius-like" functionality and all that rubbish but found it to be too slow for my liking.
Make sure you do the build.prop edits for HSPA as per this thread.
Sorry for the noob question guys but I've done some searching. I understand HTC Power Manager is a script built into the kernel with Fresh 2.0 but I'm not sure how to get to it and change stuff up. Second, what's a safe, stable speed you all use?

You cant.. If you want a rom that you can scale. Try fresh toast v1.1. It is an overclocked rom without a working camera. You can always set the clocks to default if you want. You can use Setcpu to adjust the clock speeds.

HTC Power Manager isnt actually something "you" can use or change in the .29 kernel. It is simply code (no ui) that is built in to tweak the OS memory and power settings.
my head is killing me.
I finally got my DZ yesterday and it came with Froyo already installed. I would like to downgrade from 1.84 to 1.34, so i can root it and put CM7 on.
I've followed what seems like every single tutorial and I'm still getting stuck at the same point.
When I put the PC10IMG.zip onto the SD, reboot etc the update fails because the image doesn't exist.

Most of the tutorials I've seen are to downgrade from 1.7 to 1.3, but even still, I can't find a way to downgrade from 1.8 to 1.7 so i can get to 1.3
If it can't be done, please let me know and i'll stop wasting my time.
If it can be done, please point me to what I should either download or be doing to get it working.
I've been on shipped-roms and downloaded/tried most of the files there and nothing seems to work.

Decided to use another SD card and all was going well until it said the model ID was wrong.
I'll have to go through all the other downloads and see if any of those work

I managed to downgrade finally, used another SD, made a new goldcard and ran with it.
Now I can't install CM7 using ClockworkMod, I'm getting the phone with red triangle !
I'll deal with it later. Already spent the last 3 hours on this, time to get some breakfast at least
That's the stock recovery. You can flash clockwork easily by downloading rom manager in the market. Or many other ways, like fastboot.

I got everything up & running, put Virtuous Unity Sense 3.0 on (which is brilliant) - however the phone lags sooooo much.
I need to read up on it and see if this is normal. My desire runs laps around Z. If the desire had a larger internal memory, I'd just stick with that, but running around with only 8mb and having to uninstall googlemaps every time i want to check my email is not on!
One thing I noticed is, on the desire (with GingerVillain), aps2SD free moves EVERYTHING to the SD, whereas on the desire Z, there are a huge amount of apps that won't move.
There are also apps which I can't uninstall - like facebook & twitter

Did you completely wipe data / cache and dalvik cache after flashing? That doesn't sound right as the DZ has plenty of RAM and storage.
If I'm right, the App2SD on the desire is specially configured to use an EXT4 partition on the SD card whereas the App2SD app is reliant on the App supporting App2SD and using FAT32. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
As for uninstalling unwanted bundled software, you'll probably need a root app like Titanium Backup..

no idea about the Apps2SD stuff. I'm so behind with mobile technology that i just do what people say and make do.
Just checked and the Z is still running on 800MHz, so I may need to overclock that, but the memory was on 36MB or something like that. There's not much on it, but i guess the sense burns up a fair bit of memory

that's what i read before downloading, but it's super slow.
Unlocking the phone is a headache most of the time.
Even though Virtuous is overclocked to 1.2Ghz, should it still display 800Mhz?
Where is it showing 800Mhz?
Do you have any overclock apps installed? They might be interfering with the oc daemon.

what's odd is i just cleared it off and tried to install gingervillain and it's given me Virtuous again.
There are no overclocking apps on the phone. there's nothing on the phone
The hardware info won't change at all.
So even though it says 800, thats just the stock speed of the processor.
You could download a widget/app that'll give you an accurate speed rating.

In fact, The Virtuous Unity page states that using apps like setcpu disable the automatic overclocking daemon.
As for widgets, I have Temp+CPU free and it shows my cpu scaling properly. Its a 1x1 widget that shows frequency, cpu usage, free ram, temp.

Like the title says, I was just wondering if there was a way to change the default CPU speed on boot permanently? I know I can use SetCPU, but sometimes that hasn't held through a boot and I had to set the speed manually. So, I was hoping there was just some script somewhere I would have to change. But then I got to wondering, would that be possible from my phone? Would I have to build my own kernel? Or would I just be able to decompile the rom in dsixda's kitchen to change a kernel script? Any help is greatly appreciated!
I use ROM Toolbox. It has a ton of stuff including CPU Control and CPU Profiles (like to make it 691MHz max when the screen is off). And you get a lot of other stuff with ROM Toolbox. But you could say the CPU part is like Set CPU. Don't really know if this answered your question. Hope I helped though.
I'm pretty sure CM7 has a built in CPU setting feature in its Cyanogenmod Settings -> Performance menu. It gives you the option to set on boot as well. I've never played around with it so I'm not sure if it'll give you the same problems you're describing now, but it's worth a shot if you don't want the separate app.
