is the any way to make the scrolling smoother instead of the jumps you normally get with the D-pad, for an example, in a browser?
As it is now, when in a browser and if I were to press right on the D-pad, it jumps too far and I can't see the text. in the frustration, i'd have to pull out the sylus and us the drag method.
is there a solution?
is it possible to navigate, for example contact, in HTC Touch Pro by scrolling the D-Pad?
so it would function like iPod's scroll wheel...
is there any program to do that?

why scroll and stress your thumb doing a circular motion if you can just press and hold (up or down on a long list)? or tap once, twice or trice (for short ones)?

I'm use to the wheel on SE M600 & Pxx - and this navigation is a lot quicker and more precise than tapping&touching - however does not look so cool in the bar

i'm talking about using the four way directional/navigational button below the display..
it's better to press/tap (and/or hold) the buttons instead of doing circular motions when going through lists..
the zooming function (using the touch sensitive navigation buttons) implemented by HTC really is precise and functional because it makes the process smooth (rather than step zooming) and it also gives the directions dual purpose (press to pan, rotate scroll to zoom).. but would you still prefer using it on very very long lists (say 200 contatct entries or songs on a playlist)?
let's disregard the touchscreen for a moment..
if one complete revolution scrolls you to about 10 entries, then it'll take you atleast 15 revolutions and approximately 15 seconds (one thumb revolution/sec) to reach the 150th entry..
then compare it to a single press of the down button and holding it down for, say, 10 seconds (depending on your key repitition and acceleration settings) to reach the 150th entry. then give or take 5 entry adjustment for precision.
which of the 2 do you think gets you there faster with a less sore thumb/wrist/ligament?
maybe that's why they didn't implement it thruout the system (to navigate lists).. because it is still better (and less stressful) to press than rotate your thumb when going up or down lists..
i find the scroll wheel usefull in some apps, and thankfull a list of applications that it can be made to work in and the appropriate registry entriles are detailed in this thread.

Its mains for the diamond but the pro is not so different.
I second that, scroll wheel is MUCH more precise. Sometimes it is really faster and more useful, especially when I just have one hand for operating my PPC (ie. audiomanager).
And btw, click&hold down is much more ardous than scrolling with the wheel (for me at least).

I flick, it scrolls, when I've reached the desired item, I tap!
there is a little app called "ppod" and it's just a music player that looks like an ipod, you scroll using the touchscreen in the circular motion that you would with an ipod.
Searched but didn't find anything on these two Opera questions:
1. In Opera on my TouchPro, there is a button to close the current tab (just to the right of the location field at the top of the window). On the HD2, I have to go to the tab menu to close a tab. What happened to the close tab button? I found it much more convenient...
2. The "big scroll bar" (I don't know what it's actually called, but the large button that pops up in certain applications to allow you to easily grab and drag the scroll bar with your finger) doesn't pop up in Opera. So if I'm at the end of a very long web page, I have to swipe 20 times to get back to the top since I can't "grab" the scroll bar with my finger. Is this how it works for everyone?

The first one, I think, is a change from Opera 9.5 to 9.7.

Another annoying bug in Opera is whenever there is a Drop-down menu on a webpage with over 20+ options to select from there is no way to scroll within the drop-down menu.
To give an e.g. visit fring.com and from Download click the drop-down menu for Country or Brand... there is no way to scroll down or up. The entire page starts scrolling but specifically the menu portion doesn't.
This works very well on IE6.

1. if you click on the tab button (middle button), you get the option to close the tab.
2. scrolling works very fast for me
i want to know the solution for question 2 too! it is very annoying to swipe many times to the bottom!

Yes, but that's two taps - what I miss is the "close tab" button that was right there in the browser window.

Apparently this is not a high-priority issue for xda'ers... no love so far...
Is the big pop-out scroll button HTCScroll or is it part of WM6.5? Wondering if there is a registry tweak to enable it for certain applications.
having just checked through the opera preferences editor there's no options for either of these, shame....

Zoom the area where the scroll bar is in the drop down menu.
Just single tap and hold over the scroll bar for 2-3 seconds. Don't take your hand away. Slide your finger now and it will scroll the menu instead of the opera window as a whole.
At the moment, whenever there is a scroll bar in a web page I have to continually tap the up or down buttons to scroll through. If I try to "click and drag" the bar, it just moves the page. Is there any way to change this or this this just a feature of touch screen phones?

i think opera 10 fixes this problem
Just thought I'd share this one I found.
If you hold down the "home" button for about a second you get an easy task switcher to any app that was running in the background. It's faster than hitting back till you get to the menu or getting to the menu and then finding the app you are after .
Sliding your finger across the notification window just as it drops down changes the brightness of the screen.
Any others that people have found?
You can add shortcuts to phone numbers and messages on the home screen by holding your finger down and selecting shortcuts on the home screen somewhere. This also appears to work with a lot of apps, like kindle shortcuts to a specific book.
All android phones do this, Holding the Home button is a standard android way to "Switch fast" between apps
A few things I found out reading the SGS forum here:
1. You can control the brightness by sliding your finger left to right when pulling down the notification bar. Just keep your finger on the edge of the pull down window.
2. You can have the SGS announce the title/artist of a song from the Music player by pressing and holding the Up Volume button while a song is playing.
3. You can "lock screen" while watching video by pressing Power Button while a video is playing. This is great at preventing unintended clicks while holding the phone watching a video.

I know the third one, but didn't know the first two. Thank you tenshi, for sharing.
However, I don't quite understand how exactly you can change the brightness in the day you described, cos I can't seem to do it.
Also, I got the feeling that to effect number 2, there is a monthly subscription that I need to pay to Optus. They gave me a 7 day free trial before continuing, and I did not continue.
eaglesteve, for #1, make sure auto-brightness is off in your display settings, now when you slide the notification bar panel down try sliding your finger left to right and you'll notice the display brightness change.
for #2, I don't think its connected to your provider as it doesn't even need a data connection to work, it's just using text to speech. You might have to enable or download it the first time.

My auto-brightness is already off, but I still can't seem to change the brightness when sliding from left to right or right to left while pulling down the notification curtain. Any other clue?
For 2, you're right, once I downloaded the voice synthesising software from the market place, it works. I need to make sure the music player is in the foreground for this to work, right?

Technically it's a "most recently used" list rather than a list of apps running in the background. For example if you have just exited a navigation app, or killed an app from a process manager, it will still appear in this list.

I just want to add some "shortcuts" I discovered myself using the Galaxy (maybe they aren't so hidden. I am a lousy user, don't like to read manuals. So maybe they are very obvious )
Close pull down window/curtain, close desktop layer folders and close keyboard by tapping back key
Access to the bookmark button and address bar in the brower by tapping the menu button (no need to scroll all the way up)
Open soft D-Pad by tap-and-hold the "?123" key on the standard Samsung Keyboard
Quick and reliable GPS reception by editing the ntp server in the gps.conf file

Pressing and holding the power button performs a reset. (Keep pressing it after you get the shut down/mute/airplane options and the phone will suddenly restart. Have to keep the button pressed for 5 secs atleast).

cool, this is handy when you're driving
i usually double tap the contact, but if your car goes over a bump or pot hole, then the 2nd tap is missed, and wont work.

1. Browsing in the Gallery
When browsing your large list of photo's in the 'Gallery', click the icon on the right to group them into date taken ~ makes browsing much more manageable.
2. Locking the Camera
If you wish to leave the camera on but worried you may accidentally touch the scrren/controls you can lock the camera.
Once you have the camera set up how you want it, simply briefly press the Power button. You will then see a white padlock appear on screen. Now you can hold the camera and phone how you like until you are ready to shoot.... When ready again briefly press the Power button, the padlock disappears and you can take your shoot/video.

Nah, it's samsung's replacement for the search button that's a Google requirement. They don't have a button for it, so they assigned long-press menu for search, whereas on the Nexus One, it'll make force the soft-'board to come up.

At first it didn't worked for me also, because I understand bad.
Not pulling down. Go to the upper of the screen, press till the botton of the dropdown curtain appears, but don't slide it down. Once that appears the BAR move left or right your finger, and it will adjust.

Ah yes, I got it to work too. The trick is not to pull it down but just to make the curtain barely appear before you slide.
