Okay, so I'm an idiot. I'm completely lost now. Here's the basic facts:
Hard-SPL install was unsuccessful, but I didn't notice. So I'm still with original SPL.
I started upgrading the ROM with original SPL, which of course crashes at 3 percent.
Now I can't get back into WM. It's stuck at the 'smart mobility screen'.
So the problem is: it won't let me install any ROMs because original SPL is still on there. I can't change to hard-SPL anymore either. The ROM that's on the machine doesn't seem to work anymore. When I try to install an original ROM it says I can't use this utility. I think I need to download an official ROM + installer, but I can't find any from HTC.
Alright, so skip all the noob and idiot comments please, I already know. But where do I go from here?
Please help!

First you can try a hard reset!
Here you can download the original shipped rom with installer.

Okay, so I did the hard reset as described here. No luck.
So I went back to the bootloader screen (original SPL) and tried the original rom and installer from the download link. Again, no luck. It says "Error [294] Invalid Vender ID. This utility cannot be used for your PDA phone. Please check your update utility." The phone was unlocked when I bought it, it's HTC branded. Is there another installer out there?
I've also tried loading several roms by putting them on SD, renamed as POLAIMG.nbh. (including the orginal rom, extracted from the downloaded installer). For the original Rom, it will say 'loading...', then 'checking...' and then it will tell me: "00028002 - not allow". Then it goes back to the three colour spl screen.
There's also a link here on the forum which I'm not sure is good advice.

Ths info I posted relates to the Kaiser (kaiser [nearly] equals Polaris in terms of hardware) and the MTTY is from the ELF forum.
"set 16 0" to tell bootloader to boot the OS after reset.
"task 8" to get your device formatted
I suggest the set 16 0 and a reset to see if that helps, I do advocate you searching for these commands and checking they are applicable.

I think he wrote already that he tried to flash some ROMS using SD card... (POLAIMG.NBH). Not sure though if he tried re Hard-SPL'ing using the SD flash method...
So I would suggest to retry the HardSPL using the POLAIMG.NBH method (just as if the HardSPL's .NBH file was a normal ROM) if this hasn't been tried yet...
Hey you must careffuly read mtty in kaiser thread.....mtty can brick your device for entire life.....my advice to you is pm GSLEON3
he's the master of using mtty and lot of kaiser user saved by him...

The Facts
When I try to hard-spl through the SD-card, it just says "Loading..." and that's where it stays - Even if I leave it till the battery dies. I tried the 2.10 and 1.10 versions on this page.

I had to take an nbh from this page. The reason is that the HTC Cruise Hard-SPL program I found on this page won't let me extract the rom.
I need the rom file to put in on SD!
The Hermes one probably wouldn't work anyway though, thats a good point Where to get the Polaris separate rom nbh? I haven't found it on the forums. Maybe I'm going blind...

1. You can not flash hard-spl with microSD method! (hard-spl flash use jumpspl to ignore cid-lock. But with microSD card method you will not use jumpspl, so you can not flash hard-spl! (and to use microSD method you have to have hard-spl on your pda)
2. If you unzip hard-spl on your pc will be an RUU_signed.nbh. This is the rom file, but you can not to flash it with microSD.
3. Your device is bricked, I think. Take it to repair!
after an unsuccessful flash, u shud never try to flash again, high chance of permanently bricking your pda. go contact GSLEON3, he saved my kaiser from bricking when i made the same mistake as u. helpful fellow. make sure u donate lol

Dear all,
First of all, many congratulations for the great forum and thanks for all the support given here.
Now, I recognise that problems similar to mine have been discussed elsewhere, so I apologise for opening a new post, however with all the material that I could find, I got a little bit lost, so here is the story.
Some 5 days ago, the screen on my HTC Elf stopped responding to any sort of touch. The green, red and action buttons were working but no touch screen.
I have read several posts, and concluded that one possible problem was a corrupted ROM, so I downloaded latest Onyx ROM and installed it. Phone was upgraded successfully and screen started to work again.
However, the first time I switched it off and then turned it on again, it did not boot up. It gets to the point where it displays Smart Mobility and then switches itself off. The orange light then comes on for about 6-7 seconds, then off for 1-2 seconds, and then on again......
Now it does not seem to be able to charge, but if I switch it on with the camera button on I am able to get to the ROM screen (the 'rainbow screen'), so I have hope that it is not dead.
What can I do to attempt to revive the phone please? Is there a sort of 'format' that can be given so that one can start flashing ROM, etc. from scratch?

PS: Except for the above, I consider myself as a total beginner in this area.
Hearing that the touchscreen started working again after flashing the ROM, I would conclude it's a software-issue.
In the rainbow-screen, what SPL does your phone run? If it ends with 'cmon', you've installed HardSPL. That means you can flash your phone from the rainbow-screen. Given that your phone won't boot, you should try to flash a new ROM from the rainbow-screen. But first, you have to confirm that you've installed HardSPL.

Sorry Buddy.. It seems that you didn't use HardSPL, unfortunately you won't be able to flash any other ROMs..
Yet.. You might be able to use the Gold Card Method.. Give it a try and see what would happen..
Another point is.. I'm very interested to know how did you flash Onyx ROM.. without using HardSPL nor USPL (as obvious from your IPL), I would say that you used the "White Screen Method" which is by the way.. the least safest way..

Here, a step-by-step approach is given to recover the phone:
"1º [PRJ] Unbricker ROM discovered (wildcard CID and Model ID)
2º Pick any shipped ROM from this thread:
If you have one P3450 -> here
If you have one P3452 -> here
After this, with luck and good work you recover the phone...
3º Then you must do CID_Unlock... You can search how to do it on Wiki or if you want i got one steps how to do it right here and you can see one video with cid_unlock on my signature..." (pasted from the thread)
I did Step 1, and updated it with the unbricker ROM using romupdateutility, and the phone was recovered! It could load, get to Windows Mobile, etc.
Then, unfortunately, when I did Step 2 (mine is a P3450) so I downloaded a ROM from the page indicated, I tried to update the shipped ROM using romupdateutility, but as soon as it got to 2% it failed saying that the vender ID is invalid.
Now, I don't seem to be able to update it with anything - not even the unbrick ROM. What a shame I almost go there.....

You put the shipped ROM in the same folder with RUU??? Why??? You don't need to do that...
You only need to double click on shipped ROM and the installation process begins...

actually yes what I did was to click on the update directly.
I downloaded the file RUU_Elfin_DOPODASIA_WWE_2.20.707.1R_4.1.13.51_03.07.90_RED_Ship_Reduced.exe and executed that directly.
However, now, even this one is stopping at 2%.
Is there any hope, or have I destroyed the phone?

If you can't flash the Shipped ROM, you have now to try the Gold Card... Follow the steps in that Gold Card thread...

I finally managed to revive the device, by flashing it with a 'correct' shipped ROM, which did not give any errors on updating. Big thanks for all your support - you are the best!
As this starts to get addictive, and because I am now running a ROM version which dates to 12/11/2007 (2.27.468.1B WWE), what are the suggestions for upgrading the ROM please? My device is an ELF0100.

I bought another HTC HD2 from Vodafone and when attempting to install
a new ROM, this made the whole process up to 99% and stayed there, when I take the battery and restart the cell, it on the screen shows me this: "Upgrade Failed Tray Again" and this process deleted the original ROM. Now the screen remains in that state and not to do. Please if you could help me I would be very grateful. This is the second HTC HD2 that is hurting me.

1) Did you install HSPL first? You can't flash most ROM's here without HSPL. You can still save your phone by entering into bootloader mode and installing the HSPL.
2) Try flashing ROM from SD Card. Read the forums on how to do this.
Please, read the instructions from each ROM thoroughly before flashing a ROM. No spoon-feeding here.

I tried downgrading from 3.03 but I keep getting "bad model id", which is strange because I managed to install HSPL 20 minutes ago and then after I (tried to) install the leo.img (to restore it back to stock) it failed. But somehow, not only did it fail, but it also messed up my SPL :'(
EDIT: I ran HSPL4 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5279236&postcount=4 And it came back with a "Bad model ID" error

Can't see the vid (low bandwidth here) but have a look at top line in bootloader,, do the characters look messed up?
Are you trying hspl4 when you receive the bad model id?
If yes, then the booloader modelID has been corrupted, and there's no fix that I've seen, except perhaps jtag, and I'm only 50:50 about that working.

In that case perhaps you aren't using hspl4,,, only hspl4 will work with that spl.
@OP, next time tell me that you're double posting your thread! Trust me, you'll have better luck fixing your phone this way.

Okay, we need to know the history of the device. What was the last thing you tried to do before which the phone was working correctly?
Second thing, since you don't have HSPL, you need the correct ROM for your device. (not any rom will work)
Finally, you need HSPL4 package, to install HSPL if you have SPL 3.03.

I tried restoring it back to factory defaults (via putting the recovery package in the root of the SD card, but it keeps giving me that wretched error code!
BTW here's a screenshot of my tri-screen. I tried installing HSPL4 but it popped up with an error code "wrong vendor ID" .

And now, here is my reply to that:
What is a recovery package? If you mean a LEOIMG, it should be for your device, any other ROM might not work (and will probably harm your phone)
If we assume that the faulty ROM erased HSPL but it did not actually install (is this even possible?) then you probably need the correct rom, rename to leoimg and flash from root of sd card, afterwards you will use HSPL4 to install HSPL.
