Upgrade Help - Touch GSM General

My Cellphone isnt the original Elf, but is simillar, from China.
He run on Windows Mobile 6.1, and he has 201MHZ.
I can upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5?
If anything be wrong, i can recovery my system or make my cell usable again?
Thanks!

Well.
Is recommended not to do that.
Its better to not take the risk.
You can try reading the older threads here, I think some of the them tried before but the outcome is not too good.

I do not understand what Onyx is. I read and read but I still dont get it.
What is Onyx as OS and then what about Windows Mobile?
I have an elf with WM 6.1 but when I go to device information it says I have Onyx 4.6 something
A friend of mine did somethings to the cell before he gave it to me so I whish to know about Onyx and WM

Okay, in a nutshell, Onyx is a custom ROM meaning that it is still Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 but customized by the user (in this case dsixda). In simple terms, say that you had a clean Operating System (OS) and installed many different applications to suit your needs and wants, you therefore have customized it. This is essentially what Onyx is. It is Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 loaded and/or stripped of many apps to appeal to different users. There are many other custom roms like this, each vary in what audience they each attract so there is no "best".
By the way, the "rom" is just like a boot image, like one you would have for your computer when installing an OS.

Brilliant Writeup!
Thank you now I understand everything

Just bought my first windows mobile, htc touch hd, and I want to flash WM 6.5 on it

Hi!!
Just bought my first windows mobile, htc touch hd, and I want to flash WM 6.5 on it.... I have several questions:
Is it safe to do that? or should I be worried about some complications?
what kind of knowlege I should have to do that? or does it as simple as having a new windows operating system on my laptop?
where can I find a step by step clear, simple english, instructions how to do that?
Is it different from the upcoming official windows mobile 6.5? am I going to be able to download applicatons from the upcoming offical windows mobile marketplace?
Thank you
Ayad
hello Ayad! and welcome to the HD forum. flashing is safe as long as you know and follow all the steps to prepare your device for flashing and then flash a ROM of your choice . click the links in my signature to get more info on flashing your HD with a WM 6.5 rom (especially the Dummies guide). next read the first post in the WM 6.5 ROM threads (in the ROM Development forum) to understand what each ROM includes, and finally, scan the recent posts in the ROM threads to get a feel for user experiences. it will take some time on your part, but you will be better prepared to flash your device now and in the future. take your time, be patient and you'll be successful! fyi, you will continue to get advice like mine because your questions have already been asked and answered. good luck and have fun!

Read and follow this step-by-step guide
Hi, many thanks for your reply, however after many hours of trying to do a simple task, it is just not working.
I have windows 7 x64 unfortunately and I'm running into many different problems.
I cannot even use the USPL because of driver signing, even after disabling driver signing, I cannot update the HTC Touch HD driver.
Everytime I attempt to run USPL it does not detect my device, even after following the steps.
Hi there,
do you get any specific error codes that are reported while you attempt to flash?
Also check to make sure that you have your anti-virus software disabled, if enabled.
You running as admin? Activesync installed properly? Tried front and back usb ports? Net framework up to date?
If it's already detected by windows then just Hspl it. You can flash away and never need to worry about doing it every time you change a rom or flash a radio after that.
The only thing I needed to change to get mine running in Win 7 to Hspl it was just to run as admin. But then you need to do this for just about everything anyways.
Hi everyone, many many thanks for your support.
You sent me a link on what to do and it actually worked, I now have windows mobile 6.5 on my htc touch hd thanks to you people.
I however, had to do this update on a spare laptop that had xp, I had too many problems doing it in windows 7 x64.
I firstly installed microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, then ActiveSync, and finally HSPL to flash the rom to Blackstone something and now I'm just installing Blackstone energy on my htc touch.
Thanks once again for everyones effort to help. One final question, will windows 6.5 Blackstone energy run MUCH faster than my current 6.1?
Reason I ask is because as of now, my htc running windows mobile 6.1 is very slow and sluggish, what will I expect from the new 6.5 Blackstone?
Hi again mate,
glad you got it working.
For information on the latest 6.5 and 6.5.x builds, please read this link to help you make your own decision.
I suggest you try different ROMs and see what one suits your needs. There's alot of fast ROMs out there
Thanks, I will check out that link.

htc touch hd

hi guys im new here and im new in all of this.
i just bought htc touch hd so i got some question.
1. my htc with wm6.1 some people told me that it will be good if i will upgrade the wm6.1 to 6.5 and my device will be faster'
so how can i do that? i need to buy the software or it is free?
if i'll upgrade the software all the settings and the software will be remove?
2. where can i find sites for free apps?
thanks a lot.
read the wiki!!!
has all your answers!
it is free
need to hspl first (sticky in rom dev)
it will wipe everything but you can back up your data
it will wipe your system but you can revert back to your old rom easily
find free apps here!
o.k what is hspl? what is ROM?
do you recommended me to upgrade to wm6.5?
how i backup all the programs i dont have the installations. thers a guids how to do that all?
thank you!
hspl is a hard second program loader. you need to flash that to be able to change the operating system on your device.
roms are images of the operating system. they provide windows mobile in different versions (6.1 / 6.5 / 6.5.3 or even 6.5.5) and additionally come with different versions of manila (aka touchflo 3d or in newer versions also sense).
these are very basic things that you should read more about before attempting to flash your device, or you will break it. it is not like "press one button - done". flashing your device means tempering with your waranty and bypassing locks, set by htc.
you should definetely read threads like the "dummy's guide to hspl and uspl" in the rom development section of the blackstone forum.
in that section you will also find the differnet roms provided here, marked with [Release].
have a look at the different threads to find a rom that you like from the screenshots and read through the experiences, people post with it.
also, a lot of basic windows mobile information can be found on wikipedia's windows mobile and blackstone pages.
and of course, most of all, on xda-dev's own wiki here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:HTC_Blackstone.png
oh, and you shouldn't really back up programs, but re-install them on the new operating system, backing up too much stuff will cause your rom to run instable and slow. you should only use pimbackup, or MS myphone, or outlook, to backup personal data.
if you ever consider to go back to the exact rom you are using now, you could make a full backup with spb backup, but restoring that backup on another rom is highly un-recommended.
wwooww its complicated i think i will give up thanks anyway.

Don't give up. That's defeatist talk. Yeah, it is intemidating at first but nothing worth doing is easy. Just read and you will understand. I read and read and read and when I set down to do it I was able to install a custom rom without incident. That was a year and a half ago. I'm probably going to install a new rom soon so I will read and read and read again to refresh my memory. Part of the complexity stemed from there being two different methods of flashing the phone, iirc. If you give up on trying to mod your phone you might as well jsut have bought an apple.

[Q] ROM upgrade to 6.5

Hello guys..
I got a HTC 3452 for my sister. It came with Win Mo 6.1. I want to upgrade it to either 6.5 or android. But got to know that android doesn't work on OMAP processors so, wanna know which ROM would be the best. Secondly, can i downgrade it to 6.1 back in case 6.5 is not satisfactory coz some one told me its not possible. Thirdly can the processor be overclocked?
Answers to all 3 are yes.
You can upgrade to 6.5. I'd recommend Onyx personally, but each to their own.
You can downgrade to 6.1. Again, I'd recommend Onyx.
Yes, it can be overclocked. A simple google will show you a couple of programs
To anticipate your next questions:
"How do i upgrade to 6.5"
Please make your way to the rom section, at which point you will find some detailed stickies, and all the roms. Feel free to try which ever ones you feel like, there are many in there.
Make sure you read up about CID unlocking, SPL and IPL. as some roms may require different IPL/SPLs then stock.
@captainstu72
Thank you very much... Will try it tonight or tomorrow..
