which one do everyone think is better
M2D is more popular, but Throttle Launcher is improving quickly and is more customizable with plenty of features such as Flash plugins and Widgets, etc... TL is clearly the best UI for WM.
I use both
Use Manilla2D as regular, then some of the tabs of TL in SecondToday.
TL as I been reading M2D can take up quite a bit of space on a non-htc device.
neither
rltoday will remain on my screen forever. I love mucking around with tl and m2d, but in the end I always go with rltoday.
Both are very nice today plugins, but my personal preference is rl.
@drmidnight: really? i mean, i respect your opinion, and you've released some great-looking themes for rl, but i've found that rl isn't very functional. having to use mortscript's sys2reg feels sort of... i don't know, inelegant? though i admit it's easier to make rl look great.
i'm actually debating which of these to install once my phone comes back from repairs. TL still seems a little buggy but i like how customizable it is. plus i'm a little wary of HTC apps, i used htc home on my Prophet until i realized that it had a huge memory leak and it would randomly soft-reset my phone!
As of the last few versions: M2D
While I love tweaking things, the ease of use they've finally achieved with M2D and it's skins is something that TL can't compete with right now.
TL has a ton of potential, but unless you have both the time, and the knowledge, for it (and lots of both) then it's a lot less user friendly ;P
how did you get both to work i have been trying to useTL on second today but it doesnt load for me
The main Problem is that TF2d runnes fast like hell on any Device and TL doesnt

I really enjoy the simplicity of it.
well TL are more costumizable than manila and take less ram and storage.. but for over all performance i vote for manila
TouchFlo2D run really fast without lacking..so I prefer that
speed is everything. you can't see any "loading" warning on manila. so my vote is going to manila.
I use manila 2d because im lazy and dont really want to edit anything myself. But when i did use throttle i love it customize your weather and you can add your today screen plugins. So both are good just depending on if your lazy or not
I have been cooking both in my device (Atom Exec).
TL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=421349
TF2D: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433600
I was very happy with TL and proud of being a skinner of a GSmart alike but it used a lot of RAM.
Storage isn't an issue since they were cooked in a ROM.
As for TF2D, weather is far better, tabs are much faster and it eats less RAM.
Despite the effort I have been putting in skinning TL my vote goes for TF2D.

@Jaime Méndez
Hi!
Can you share your TL theme please? . It looks awesome. Also... have you tried it with 0.9.4k? It theorically must work a lot faster.
@everybody
Well, I don't want to hijack the poll. I know my opinion is not impartial but here it is:
TL Wins:
- Scalability
- Customizable
- Potential
TF2D Wins:
- Speed
- RAM footprint (but this depends on the theme you're using for ThrottleLauncher).
Understand that throttle's target is to be able to do almost "any possible interface". And that's something that has it's drawback in performance as everything is configurable. Touchflo2D on the other part has may fixed things that make speed and mem save possible.
Also ThrottleLauncher is still on beta stage and some improvements are still under progress...
ThrottleLauncher is only an UI framework to allow people with nice design ideas for new interfaces to implement them eassily .
Any way I'm really proud that an application developed by me on my free time is even taken in account as a UI developed by a whole multinational enterprise ... and still gets some votes!!!
Well... to sum up use TF2D if all that you want is speed and RAM but keep an eye on Throttle , and if one day you feel creative give Theme development a try....

Lol, do you trying to install them on Nokia or something?
close this thread, its no popularity competition. or move to Off topic.
i hate it seeing the development and hacking section full of skins for every sh!t and polls about whats better.
theres already no overview about new developed applications. the xda forum deserves an own subforum for skins and themes like for the new devices that have been added.

I use M2D at the moment as it is very pretty and it works smoothly. Throttle Launcher has more customization, but the animation is not as smooth as M2D and it cannot completely duplicate the TouchFlo3D plugin...

-widgets
-flexible engine (open development of widgets?)
-hardware accelaration support (will my mogul run faster?)
-facebook integrated into contacts!
-multiple home pages
-professional and lifestyle (huh?) layout
-kinetic scrolling
-fully customizable (themes supported?)
This can tide everyone over until 6.5! Way better than TouchFlo (IMO).
Amazing
Looks Amazing. Hmm Should I get ready to remove Manilla 2D off my Omina?

Not if SPB hasn't really done away with the standard Today screen. One of the reasons I didn't switch over to 2.0 was the fact that the Mobile Shell home screen did not replace the today screen. I know there's an XDA hack for that functionality, but MS 3.0 should take lesson from PointUI and replace today completely.
this looks awesome.
their standard/default themes always sucked. and somehow 3.0 looks just like 2.0 just with a little tune up..hmm...after all this announcements im a little bit disappointed.
was it announced when this would be available?
Uffff I think i would use this for sure!!! need a release date...
I am a little dissapointed. When I heard about Facebook integration, for some reason I was thinking of the ability to use chat, change status, etc... instead it is just a way to get the profile photo to the contact in your address book. Bummer.
I agree. Not much better than the current version. Should've integrated a few apps would've made it more useful. new version of mobile shell might make current skin invalid too.
So this is basically the same, but a little "upgraded." By not changing the overall idea at all, the same reasons I dont use 2 will be the same reasons I dont use 3. I was expecting so much more with the hype. PointUI kills this. Kills. When will they learn, keep it simple, make it customizable. Oh well.
It looks ok but PointUI didn't do anything for me either so I'll stick with my TF3D till either is truely better.
Glad to see they're trying something new since TouchFLO pretty much made me stop using Mobile Shell as it did what I needed, and it came with my OS, rather than having to install something on top.

Since when is PointUI customizable? I have used it and there is not customization built into it.
Any idea on when the beta of SPB3 will be out?
Do we realy need a second topic with the same questions and wishes?

JukEboXAuDiO, you seriously must be joking right! Pointui Home not customizable? Is being able to replace every graphic in the app, being the only UI with scripting support to allow you to build all sorts of applets and things, and being able to customize the background through the entire app not quite enough customization for you? Or are you referring to the old version released 12 mths ago?
Guys,
This thread is for all of us to post feedback on which of the above 2 we find better and why.
Please follow this format:
Please write which you like:
For eg:
SPB MOBILE SHELL 3.0
and below this give reasons:
1.
2.
3.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE GIVE REASONS IN TERMS OF FEATURES/ADVANTAGES ETC WHICH ONE HAS AND THE OTHER DOESN'T RATHER THAN WRITING GENERAL REASONS FOR LIKING.
I am sure your contribution to this thread will help many to make an informed decision on which UI to spend their hard earned money on.
i have tried pointui free version and mobile shell trial version. both have their good points. personally i feel:
MS3:
1. Less memory consumption (takes about 6mb ram, pointui takes 10mb!!)
2. Ease of use (don't need much knowledge to configure everything to my liking)
3. Fancier graphic
4. Not many bugs found (1 big one is my ks20 can't use the camera hope they'll fix it)
Pointui 2:
1. Good suupport forum where there are many developers working on the widget and the owners also replys a lot on the forum unlike spb ms3 who doesn't give **** about what people say in their forums and are very selfish with integrating other apps or applets into their system
For now ms3 is leading the race surely. I think pointui2 hasn't matured yet, a lot of stuff is still lacking or buggy although the developers are working hard to include a lot of features. but seriously the simple stuff are not exactly working very well yet. hope they focus more on a good out of the box experience cos i'm no programmer, and i dont want to pick up scripting just to use pointui2 and help them fix their bugs.
but given time i think pointui2 will surely takeover spb ms3 cos the developers are just much friendlier people than the stuckups over in ms3. my two cents.

Ya, well Point UI already took a major step with the launch of the Pro version. Lets wait for some feedback on that one.

Actually this has been addressed (at least in the free version) by one of the PointUI devs. They added the same memory-saving functionality that MS has where it stores images in storage memory instead of program. I have both MS3 and PointUI Home2 (beta with memory fix) on my 6800 and I boot up with about 18mb free with either UI running. MS3 does seem to cram in a lot more functionality for the memory though, I must say.
SPB MOBILE SHELL 3.0
and below this give reasons:
1. Fancy graphics
2. Fully Featured (actually too fully featured)
3. Mature
Point UI 2.0
1. Not as bloated as MS3
2. Easier to configure
3. I think everything is easier to access with this "shell"
4. Has a lot more potential because of it's scripting engine imo
MS3 is ready to go when installed and it looks nicer. Point UI needs more configuring but you can make it more your own. MS3 has a head start when installed, but I think Point UI has more potential because the way it's set up. You can configure it to be more like MS3 (without the carousel) or more like Manilla 2d. Or you can let it be a "standing out" shell. MS3 is being bound i think to it's standard install, if you do not want that it requires some hacking. Point UI is made to be changed
I read that Palm makes a legal war against the palm pre theme, so to avoid copyright issues and waiting news to take off the skin

I using:
1. WAD
2. WAD desktop
3. iphone today
In this way the top bar webos style is always present!
Updated preview
It looks fantastic. Great job. Are you going to make a VGA-Version?
I don't think it would be that complicated. The PalmPre's homescreen is basically a big TaskManager. We already have "similar" apps on Windows Mobile like that on the Xperia. Just make a homescreen plugin with a large task manager like interface with the same touch gestures as the Pre. The complicated part I would imagine would be the menu.
I like your skins, but it would be best as a simple homescreen plugin. Using WAD and the likes eats up memory and the way it overlays sucks.
I'm not a programmer but there are lots of open-source projects that, if combined, could provide roughly the same effect. I think someone with some know-how could come up with it pretty quick by reusing code that is already available out there.

Before starting this project I tried a lot but none of the programmers built an interface palm webos like for WM. There are iphone, android, and other but webos not so I decided to build it yourself.
I hope very much that any programmer to engage in this project and does a better job of mine!

Job well done.... This would go good with the WM6.5 theme I put together.

Looking good. Here's my little take on it. Using a modded PointUi
Slightly off-topic tip: I suggest Omnia users should use PointUi 2.0.28e if they want their phone/clock to function poperly. Any other higher version causes the clock to stick and (possibly) corrupt the green button.
subscribed!
hopefully vga support soon
WOW super nice. very clean. hope the release will be soon definately going to donate for this
WOW nice man, ill use this when it comes out. is this another wad theme?

can you give a link to the theme your using?
This is probably a bit of a stupid question with probably a very obvious answer. But why are all the apps for windows mobile all ugly?
We have HTC sense and that looks great why can't other apps keep the htc sense feel like from menus or anything instead of reverting to windows mobile style.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people for example even love ginger children.
Many WinMo apps have been written to look the way they are so that they fitted in with a standard WinMo look and feel. Others were simply designed by talentless and tasteless folk (like Steve Jobs).
Believe it or not the apps have actually got better looking recently.
ETA: If you go to the link in my sig and check my recommended apps, you'll see that a lot of apps do look nice. Slacker, Bing, etc.
I think it should be compulsory to use the Sense SDK Look 'n' Feel now for every app developed for Windows Mobile
Partly because developers != designers.
At the same time, HTC Sense is but a few years old, while Windows Mobile and its associated 'ugly' interface have been around for 10. It's a bit unreasonable to expect all the applications to reflect the updated design of a single manufacturer.

It's because WM doesn't have a unified screen size, like the iPhone for example. So the apps/games have to be made in VGA, QVGA, WVGA to name three of many many others. So the games have to be made for each naitive screen size to actually look 'pretty', and the poorer looking apps on the HD2 are made for a screen size that isn't WVGA.
Speaking of ugly apps, is there a starter's guide or someplace to look for skinning stock applications (in particular, I'm interested in Outlook, as email's one of my top use cases, and the default skin looks awful)? I can code, but am at a loss as to where to even start. I did a search on the forums to no avail. To clarify, I'm not simply looking for skins, but am interested in creating my own for specific applications. Any pointers?
Most of the newer apps (< 1-2 years) do look good, and on every screen size, take G-Alarm, Resco Photo Manager, Opera 10, etc...
Most other blunt-looking apps are several years old, and date back from when visual design didn't have any consideration from developers, they were just using the default looks and controls rather than spending as much time and effort redesigning their own UI as needed to actually develop the application's functionality. Pocket Outlook is just the same as it was 5 years ago or even more...
But now pretty much everybody agrees that custom graphics is worth it...
This really is quite a naive question... if it was all about simple, smooth looking apps we would have bought an iPhone...
Having said that, what particular programs are you looking for? Most functions of a WinMo phone can now be utilised using programs with amazing UIs.
Browser: Opera Mobile 10/Mini 5
Email: You have sense... and even when you open an individual email (where it defaults to Outlook) we have pinch-to-zoom brilliance
SMS: You have sense...
Contacts/Phone: You have sense...
Photos/Videos: HTC, or try Resco Photo Manager
File explorer: Standard one is actually fine imo, but there's also the skinnable Resco, Total Commander, Throttle Explorer
Others: Google maps, Facebook, iGO8
There's a plethora of options out there.
