I am wanting to buy a HTC phone, and I am very interested in the Touch Diamond 2. I have a few concerns because i am new to a Windows Mobile OS. Is there a MSN application? And how can you manage social networking on the TD2? In addition how is the Touch Screen? And i would like a decent camera and a workable QWERTY touch keyboard.
And my main point is, is the TD2 the best HTC phone on the market? Or is the Touch HD better?
I really appreciate the advice, thanks.
Hey,
There is a MSN application on the Touch Diamond 2.
As for social networking on the phone, your contacts can be synced to facebook. So your contacts pictures will show up as a display picutre.
The camera is ok but it can't take pictures in dark backgrounds as there is no flash.
I can not comment on TD2 vs THD as I only have a TD2. But they seem VERY similar apart from the screen size.
Hope that helps with your questions.
Man.
-Windows Live-application works fine, for chatting, email, contacts and everything.
-See other thread for facebook-integration, works like a charm, even syncs your friends with ur contacts.
-qwerty is included, most ppl download "finger keyboard" though, which is better.
-The camera isn't all that, but its okay.
so you would definately recommend the TD2 over the Nokia N97 for example?

N97 has a builtin keyboard, the HTC equivalent is the Touch Pro 2, which is a Diamond2 with keyboard
I'd definitely recommend the HTC phones over Nokia, more apps, more customisation.
Do you find phones hard to use? If so, buy a Nokia.
Want apps/modding? Buy HTC/WinMo.
Want apps/modding/open source? Buy Andriod...
Want loads of Apps and a great UI? Buy Apple

if ure a normal user, and DONT want to change or install (waste the time) to pimpUpYourPhone and dont want to learn how the software works-
then a Iphone or Android whould be the best for you. (they got basicly a very cool interface and good software incl.)
if ur a person who is more in experience with software and willing to learn it- i'd prefer to a HTC device... (if u knw how- u can install things on your HTC ; that makes the iphone and Android looking like a cheap LG phone )
Nokia N97 is kinda ....määäh.... a "bad quality" thing between.... its standart stuff is still usefull- but also "PimpAble" with serval software/apps
but much ppls are rly disapointed in quality of the device...
for that much money (prize) , u COULD imagine a better quality device...
ofc- android will increase its software / and apps in future
i think android will be together with WindowsMobile and Apple one of the leading devices in future.
may im gonna buy a android phone soon too.
but i think ill wait 1 or 2 years more- till theres enough software / posibilitys out for it...
the next few years will be hard and confuseing anyways for the software market on devices...
if TAT will come out in cooperation w/ developters... lol

i'm using it since 2-3 months and at the end i can says it is not comfortable at all.
microsoft has to work in the worse way it is possible every time.
not complete as a pda, totally uncomfortable as a telephone.
can u tell me if there are some roma or OS to replace the windows mobile 6 pre-installed?
i knew apple OS where the best one, is there something i can do in order to have a better pda instead of this microsoft trash one?
thank you.

looking around it seems android is still under development.
could you tell me something more?
tnx
No Other "fully functional" OS exists for the device.
just out of curiosity how long have you been using the device?
first month or so of using windows mobile is always tedious... but when you get used to it.. you wont want to go back (I got a nokia N95 and regretted it)

hi there.
i'm using the pda since 3 months.
by now i've quite stopped customizing it or "playing" with since i find win mobile set up quite messy.
i came from nokia smartphone series and found symbyan the best os for mobility ever.
fully customizable, fast, stable and above all build with "few clicks" philosopy.
with official win 6 rom, in order to reach a sub menu i have to dig into folders and tabs getting annoyed really fast.
start menu is almost not customizable, i cannot move links where i like, well they could have done a far better work insetad of that.
maybe changin rom passing to an unofficial one could give me some more satisfaction, but i'm not sure since the starting point is the same.
i hope i could explain myself at an understandable basic level ^^
sorry for my horrible english
bb.
Oh,now I get it. Phone people keep moaning about how Windows doesnt behave like symbian. Duuuh! Let go of your complete reliance on the d-pad(its a Symbian thing),you have a touch screen now,use it.

he, he, interesting post. I also spent a lot of time trying to simplify my phone interface. There are many great programs and tips on that forum. However, the first time I had an iPhone in my hands, I admitted its interface is 8 levels ahead of M$. Now, what we need is a fully customizable, fast and stable OS. Might be Android since HTC signed the partnership. Let's see. Anyway M$ got to react quickly otherwise they might be out of the game soon.

anyway, any hint to improve wm6?
i totally agree with you...
windows mobile is very complicated becuase it has all these extras that the average cell phone user will never even bother using....word, excel, ppt, etc. while business users thrive on these features.....
i am an average cell phone user but the only reason why i got the 8525 is because of the large qwerty keyboard so i can text a lot, but i wish the interface was as simple as a normal phone, maybe google android will fix this problem in the future =)
extra features do not make something complicated. complicated to you maybe. Very simple and easy in my opinion, besides, its near identical in operation and style to desktop windows, which everyone, even mac users are familiar with.
buying a hermes for just quick sms is like buying a a ferrari to get to the shops... should have bought a sidekick.
"because of the large qwerty keyboard so i can text a lot"
tests show that young fanatics could sms alot! faster then a good typist on a normal sized keyboard could type
they only one who could beat the young sms fanatics was freaky enthusiast old school telegraphs people
if a full keyboard was all the requirements then a nokia comunicator would prob be closer to fitting the need of a normal gsm user who just wanted a keyboard

Check out HTC home. you can add 8 programs to the quick launcher.
Or since you seem to be such a fan of the iPhone, why not install the iPhone interface for hermes http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302739&highlight=iphone
or you can even look into the HTC touch interface.
I think thatif you look at thoes, they will help with your situaltion.
BTW, you should look in the TyTn/Kaiser forums for specific infomation to your phone. this one is for the older TyTn(8525).
Mate, go ahead and install Mobile 6! It is a lot better than the old WM5. Make sure you get a "cooked" version from this site, one with a built in HTC cube, HTC plugin etc. You will not fail to be impressed. Did I mention that you can use a 8 meg micro card for extra storage? Try doing that with an I-Phone!

He meant 8 gigs of sdhc ram and if you factor in that you can have as many as you can afford then your software and music and video options are very near limitless

Hi guys,
I used to have an Xperia X1 but long story short, i broke it. I threw it on the floor and now its broken and beyond repair, so now i need a new smartphone.
Ive decided on the HTC Magic or Nokia N97. Since nobody can really give me any user impressions on the N97 since nobody has it, i figured id start asking you guys 1st.
Can you guys give me some user impressions (long or short both welcome) about the magic and how you think it fares vs the N97?
I love the fact that the N97 has both a touch screen and qwerty but so far, all the reviews ive read about it have been surprisingly lukewarm. But to be fair, the same websites didnt love the Xperia X1 either and i thought that was a wonderful phone. So i will reserve final judgement until i test it out this friday.
But...can you guys tell me about the magic? the pros and cons? I will mainly be using the phone for texting, internet browsing, music, and videos. Hopefully I would get to play some emulation games on it or homebrew.
Please guys, help me decide who phone to get!
Im am in Taiwan Kaohsiung and over here the N97 is 26000NTD (812USD) whie the Magic is roughly 20000NTD (625USD).
Thanks in advance!
magic is soo magic
well i am no expert but been using win mobile since pocket pc 5 and just got the magic! well i can say i will not go back to windows mobile again.
This phone is so good that the best way to really have an idea is to goto a shop and play with it.
Android is deff the way to go.
Now for Symbian phones! i have used them and never again, just too slow and to be honest i'd rather use win mobile.
thats my 2cents
I just jumped from the iPhone to the Android OS (Google ION) and totally think that Android is a winner. iPhone does apps better with iTunes and AppStore, but overall, Android is a great OS. It trumps anything found on the Symbian platform.
Go with the droid, you will be pleased that you did!
2 weeks ago I migrated to HTC Magic from the Nokia N95.
What can I say apart from it's an awesome phone - completely blows the Nokia away. Can't really comment on the N97 but my only critisism of the Magic is the camera, which is crappy in low light conditions. Everything else has surpassed my expectations.
any other user impressions?
like what you guys love about the OS?
Im looking for more information other just than its great....
Pro:
The current Android OS is better than the current S60v5 found in the Nokia 5800XM/N97, Samsung OmniaHD, and SE Saito (Idou). Android is easier to mod and configure to your liking (custom ROM's). System integration especially email is way better than Symbian S60v3/v5. Capacitive touch screen on the Magic is better than the resitive touchscreen on the N97.
Con:
Camera on the N97 blows away the camera on the Magic for sure. There are things still missing from Android like native tethering support (BT or USB), BT file transfer (OBEX), and etc.
Overall I like both S60 and Android but I go with the Google Ion because there is no S60 phones with T-Mobile US 3G.
BTW the new Nokia S60 phones are not slow at all. I had used anything from E61i to 5800XM.
Can't say to much about the N97, but the Magic is an excellent phone even for people who haven't had a smartphone before, like me. Before reading this I am specifically talking about the HTC Magic on the Rogers network in Canada with the 6gb/month data plan. I may be all over the place and I apologize in advanced, I just before I think. Here we go....
Now the phone is all intergrated with Google as you know. You can update your contacts right from your home computer, just log onto your google account and add contacts, it even uploads the pictures that you upload on the computer. I thought that was cool since it wouldn't take up memory on your phone or your SD card.
Now the thing people say about this phone is that the memory is small, only 512mb I believe, but after all the original apps and OS stuff, there is only about 260mb left for you to play with, plus the expandable 16gb SD card. Now with the adroid app store, all the apps are actually quite small, the reason is because all the apps are data driven, meaning you need data to use them basically. For Canada users it is not to bad since we have the 6gb/month plan so we aren't worried, but for people in Australia not so good since I heard their data plans aren't as generous. Not sure what states is like.
Another thing is that no one has figured out how to install apps on the SD card yet.
bachviet has already mentioned about the camera, just make a note that the video is quite horrible as well, both recording and playback.
The sensitivity is pretty much like the iPhone, a little bit less responsive but really not a big deal, we all adjust to things like that. The OS is quite fluid compare to other phones out there. Still don't think it is quite as fluid as the iPhone but thats just my opinion.
The android OS is very user friendly, and very customizable (is that a word?). The adroid market currently has over 3,500 apps available I think, which most of them are free. Unfortunately here in Canada we aren't even allowed to access the paid apps on the market.
I can't think of anything else to say. Hope this helps bit, again sorry for being all over the place.
HI, first I'm an happy owner of the magnificent Nokia E71. It's fast and full of business applications: this smartphone is focused for business. Second I'm an happy owner of the HTC Magic mods to Roger Firmware. This is a smart phone. My experience?
iPhone 2g
iPhone 3g
HTC Diamond
Samsung Omnia i900
Blackberry Storm 9500
HTC Touch HD
Do not consider Windows Mobile an OS for smartphone, it's not!
As far as the N97 if it works like the E71 is a great phone, full of features an bla bla bla, like all serius nokia phone.
HTC is new, amazing, customizable, ull of programm, yes with some lack, but it's really a fantastic touchphone and the droid is... the droid!

ok,,,, finaly out of my 18 month contract and can now get something new and shiny to replace my ageing N95
Was looking seriosly at the Touch HD....... but now the Hero has come along and i cant decide what to do ;0(
I know a little about windows mobile... but nothing about Android...
I just want a nice phone with a good screen... ( i belive the Hero is capacative which is better than resistive? or nicer to use at any rate.. )
But with the Android OS... can i still load in 3rd party apps and software like i can with my N95 symbian OS?? ,, i have things like Garmin XT route GPS program and things like that? can that all still be used on Android phones? or are they more like the iphone and can only take specificaly written stuff for that OS?
If you were buying your first Touchscreen atm... what would you choose out of the hero or Touch HD?? or is there somethign else i should maybe be considering?
Many thanks

If you want a full-fledged emulator because you want use iPhone apps, etc, don't expect one too soon.. but it doesn't mean it won't happen. People have already ported apps from iPhone to WM.

The Blackstone has many features that are usefull such as office mobile. Being able to have the bits you like from each phone is the reason some of us use alternative front ends. The Iphone interface is very good and I dont see what is so odd about wanting to use it on an MS phone. There are good things about the Iphone and the Blackstone and I would miss some of the blackstone and MS functions if I bought an IPhone. Why do you object to people trying to make the phone thay have as good as it can be? The IPhone interface is slicker for me and looks less "cobbled together" than TF3D as well as being faster to do all the things you want, so I use that front end on my phone of choice the Touch HD. Try out IPhonetoday and see.

Hello,
i am planning to buy the Acer NeoTouch S200 F1, and i would like to know which custom rom consider to be the best. In addition, could you tell me if Greek language is supported?
Thanks in advance
Well it depends what rom you consider the best.
If you already know about Windows Mobile and its different Homescreens it is actually up to you.
I personally prefer SPB mobile shell, www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell , but it does cost . If you decide to choose SPB mobile shell, then a clean and lite Rom would be one of your choice
Or if you go for Sense 2.5, then Arto's sense rom would be the best choice for you. Some nice feature i really like is SRS WOW HD which signifantly improves the sound quality
Concerning greek i can't answer your question
Thanks for your answer
i read that the latest official rom from acer is ver 3. Does it worth to change it with another unofficial rom? What common things will improve?
In addionio could you tell me how do you find sound speaker and camera quality?
Thanks in advance!
well there are wm versions that are more fingerfriendly, and many unofficial roms run on these.furthermore many unneccessary apps from acer are mo more included
speaker quality concerning the speaker for a call is fine but the external speaker is lets say sufficient
the camera is the biggest weakness, lack of features and bad quality of the photo unless the light conditions are perfect. my old omnia did much better. video recording isnt the best either
Thank riotman for your answers. I really appreciate.
Do you suggest me another smartphone in ~300euro, better than this one?

I am using Acer only because i need a Windows Mobile device for my work, otherwise i would bought a Android smartphone - probably HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S (I9000).
Android is having much better apps and is easier for use. If you have enough money then buy HTC Desire - you wont regret it - but don´t buy Acer Liquid or some other Android under 300 €.
lets say im contended but i wouldnt recommend it, bad acer service, built quality suffers fast from daily use and wm is a dying plattform. id also buy an android device like the desire or galaxy s if i needed replacememt
neotouch can be found ofr 199 euros...I don't think that you can find a decent adroid smartphone in that price-range..
id like to see the source where u can buy a new acer neotoch for 199 euros...

None of them, because they both have small display resolution - very bad for surfing.
But, if you are O.K. with that, then i would always go for HTC.

might as well get an iPhone 4. easy to use.
he would probably hate windows mobile...
For lot of years only windows mobile were exists. Did you hate them so much (as now)? I believe not. You hate them now because you see android and iphone
The phone will be for my father. He will use it for wifi surfing, listen to music and watch a small video, take a picture.
i like the big screen 3.8"
what do you thing? if i was 'sure' that acer phones is not like acer laptop, i will bought it
Well, Windows Mobile demands a quite large amount of time to understand its functionality... its not like an iphone, which takes away your opportunity to decide what you want to be able to do.
Freedom always requires time to get along with, so if your father likes to discover this, windows mobile will be ok for him.
I actually even gotta agree that the big advantage of Windows mobile is the large variety of Navigation software.
But still i wouldnt recommend Acer... My battery cover is kinda loose after a few months, its not totally fix anymore, btw the battery cover gets scratched really easily, and as already mentioned, unless the daylight conditions arent perfect, the camera is useless.
Try to buy a used HD2 from ebay or somewhere else. it'll be the better choice.
Dont get me wrong, The Acer neotouch is a stunning device, but it's built quality isnt made to last very long

Actually, I'm quite happy with the stock Acer ROM, it's the most finger friendly UI I've seen (I dislike Manila and SPB Mobile after ver2). Only problem I have with it is just the outdated WM 6.5 and I can't seem to arrange the Start menu icons easily.
I can't say Android is a better platform because I bought one and tried it out extensively. If you're looking for a "smart" phone, then go for Android. If you're looking for a PDA phone, then get a Windows Mobile.

OK. But is the Acer then Wm phone to go for? The HD2 might indeed be of better build quality but it has a smaller capacity battery, is too big and cost allmost twice as much.
So the question remains. Is the HD2 (for a slightly slower device but better build quality) the snapdragon WM phone to go for or is the neotouch the better option (especially since the HD2 won't get Windows Phone 7 as was originally promised and remains on a dying platform).
