I am currently using a Treo 650 on At&t with a pay as you go plan. I currently don't access the internet and I don't get charged for it. I want to know if it is possible to use a G1 or Iphone on my At&t pay as you go plan without being charged for any data usage or updates. I just want the phone primarily for making calls and for occasionally surfing the net using the phones wifi. Is this possible or am I just wasting my time? Let me know, thanks
You will need some way to activate your G1 at its first start (and after wipes). You can't do that over wifi, only over the mobile phone network. (Doesn't have to be your own sim card though.)
Once that's done there are ways to limit the data connections to wifi only.
You can activate the phone through wifi, I think its a stciky on top of this page. I'm using my g1 on tmobile prepaid. You will probably have to disable your apns on att.
Thanks guys
I really appreciate you guys input on this. I'm a real newb when it comes to this but I wanted to make sure that it was possible before I spent time and money on it. I will look for the sticky, even though I have no idea what that is at this time. Otherwise, I have a friend that has a G1 on T-mobile that I'm sure wouldn't mind using his sim if we couldn't do it on wifi. I'll look around the site for it. Let me ask this, is it a lot easier to use T-mobile from now on with my prepaid service or is disabling the apns not that difficult of a task in order for me to stay with At&t? Thanks for the input
You will also need to unlock your G1 for it to work with an att sim, it costs like 20 bucks. Using your friends sim is the easiest way to activate so I would do that. Changing the APN's is very very easy, when you need to do it shoot me a PM and I will give you att's APN.
Good stuff!
Based on this information I'd say I'm ready to go shopping for a G1.
My friend just had his G1 unlocked, rooted, etc by a local guy for about $30. He then addied emulators, roms, etc. I'm just amazed at the stuff he has on it. My friend is pretty confident that he can do everything else except unlock the phone and disable APN (He's T-Mobile on a normal talk and data plan). He didn't think I would be able to disable the data plan on a pay as you go plan. He did tell me to come here though and post and I'm glad I did.
Do you think it would be a good idea to just let the guy do it all for $30 or can I get it unlocked cheaper some other way and have my friend do the rest.
Thanks again guys
$30 aint bad, the unlock code alone is like 20-23. So if you would rather have someone else do it then thats not a bad price for roms and stuff, if you feel comfortable doing it yourself then you would save 7-10 bucks.

I was wondering if i can use unlocked tmobile htc hd2 with the $10 data plan (unlimited) that is available for non smartphones. Will tmobile realize that i am using htc hd2 and upgrade it to smartphone data plan? i am gonna make a contract with a non smartphone and add that 10 dollar data plan to use it on my htc hd2 Do you have to have an Unlocked htc hd2 (not tmobile branded) to do that? is it even possible either way?
Yes it is possible to do such a thing, but for how long is currently unknown. T-Mobile has recently started denying people using the non-smartphone internet with smartphones internet access as it is a violation of the TOS...so good luck!
So i can do it with the tmobile branded unlocked htc hd2? but dont they know that i i am using htc hd2 if i use the 10$ data plan and automatically upgrade it?
Yes they will know you are using an HD2, and yes, it is possible that they will upgrade it automatically. My advice; just opt for the 20USD unlimited smartphone data from the start...you won't have to setup the proxy or live in fear that your plan will be upgraded.
Isnt it 30 USD? if it was 20 then i can probably get the data plan but i am pretty sure the data plan is $30. Wait so if you dont get the $10 data plan on the tmobile branded unlocked htc hd2, will they know its a hd2?
There's no way to get around it. They will know what phone you're using. I do not know if they will make a change to your plan without confirming with you.
I don't know how you will actually enable the $10 plan in the first place though.
Thats a good point aswell. You have to have a device that supports the 10USD plan to even add it to your plan, so you may not be able to anyways. And the full internet is either 20 or 30 depending on your contract arrangement.
I recently got my phone and it's working for me. I get HSDPA speed with the $10 internet.
Yeah it should work.... just so you know you are defrauding the T-Mobile network. There's still a lot folks out there that are apparently still on the T-Zone plan as well....
Actually if you know or are familiar with those Asian run phone shops and ask nicely you don't even need a dumb phone to setup the $10 plan, the reps that work there will just call T-mobile and defraud the whole system for you.....
Yeah... that's just jolly.

Does it really bother you that somebody else has a good deal going with t-zones on the HD2? If it makes you feel better, T-Mobile will probably be forcing users to upgrade their plans starting this Wednesday.
Yeah to me it kinda does, because they know they are screwing the system but continue to do it. Anyways I formally ask that this NOT turn into another debate about the morallity of people using the 10USD plan versus the correct one. Thanks.

Bother me, nope.? I don't even have data plan... i refuse to pay for it when i can get free wifi @ my home/campus/work....
The OP asked a question and i voiced his options, all of them.... whether he chooses to to take the dark route or not is his business. In addition i don't see how you can justify calling T-Zones as "has a good deal going" when you are in fact defrauding the network, which i have clearly pointed out in my previous response. My advice is pretty much borderline crack pot shady... but it's been discussed about here numerous times and t-mobile has done nothing to fix his loophole.... yet...
Just to add about the $20 internet plan. I have it for my HD2 (part of family plan), the rep added it when we were renewing the contract and ordering the phones (my sister got the 3G slide which came with the $25 plan). So if you want it, try calling them and talking to a rep, they should be able to add it for you (YMMV).
T-mobile can block you at any time since they do have a database of their own IMEIs and they know what device is accessing their network by it's IEMI that is transmitted every time the phone accesses the network.
It would be a very simple task for T-mobile to block the non supported devices for that data plan
Well here is what happend when I upgraded one of my lines. I just upgraded to an HD2, a couple days later theytossed on a 104 web plan. Which is fine cuz I want to use the web anyways. when I first was using my HD2 it said that it needed a subcription to access the web, blah blah. So, i changed the wap settings to internet2.voicestream.com and it works great. 3g speeds and everything.
Why did you change to the slower proxy?

The stock epc.tmo doesnt work when you have the 104 (non smart phone plan). The speeds are the same with the internet2 settings. unless you know of a different one that works a well. It works just fine.
I had a phone recently, Nokia 5530, and had the 10 dollar internet plan and I noticed depending where I was in the country I sometimes would get full internet access and other times I would get off the standard tzone areas and it would show subscription upgrade required message.
I think it might depend on where you live for this to work. Perhaps the WAP settings might also work.
There is a way to get the $10 t-zone plan on your HD2
Here is a simple way to get the t-zone on your HD2..
1) Login to your t-mobile account via the web.. register first if you haven't do so.
2) when you login, T-mobile might choose your phone (maybe HD2 already selected).. at this moment, change your phone to any non-smartphone.. like samsung T509 or any non-smartphone as your default phone.
3) go to change service and add the $10 t-zone internet to your plan
4) set your HD2 with the right APN setting you're OK.
5) For me, if you're using internet2.voicestream.com in Winmo works OK and in Android works OK.
This is a cheated way or gray area... Either way T-mobile make extra $$$ from you. I think T-mobile knows this loop hole, but they keep it open because they don't want to upset us cheapie????
my 2 cents
did they get rid of this? I do not see the option anymore.
Please forgive me if this has been posted, but it did not show in similar threads.
I have T-Mobile and was wondering if there was a way to run my tab off of the android web feature instead of the web connect plan. im NOT looking for voice feature or anything like that, just to be able to use android web instead of web connect. It would definitely save me some money.

People have been trying their hardest to find a way to get this working, as somewhat described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845263
Problem is that T-mobile is blocking web access to the tab IMEI's that try to use anything other than the Webconnect data packages. At least, that's the current theory that I've seen. Everyone has reported that they get taken straight to T-mobile's site or some similar page when trying to navigate the web. IMEI makes the most sense, and I believe that its not possible (or just very difficult) to change the IMEI of a device. There's no way to change that value on T-mobile's end since their systems automatically recognize the device based on its IMEI once it has been in use for ~3 days. (I work as a sales rep there, and I've tried to find a way to no avail).
Im wondering, Tmobile has a fairly decent prepaid plan, unlimited talk and text w/2gig data. I wonder if that'll work. Im probably going to try it if no one else has. Im using simple mobile right now, but definitely dropping them after my month is over. Supposedly unlimited data, but apparently capped at 1gig, and very rude customer service!! But I think by doing prepaid with tmobile, it shouldnt matter what device you are using, you dont even have to tell them what its for when you purchase it.
They will know because their network will detect the IMEI number. Unless you buy a tab from a different carrier or an unbranded one, they will know.

I'm assuming it will treat it similarly to the postpaid accounts, seeing how they just came out with the prepaid webconnect plans. My guess is that they still use the IMEI detection, but it could be worth a shot. $70 is a steep price for testing purposes, so I'd say if anything spend the $30 for the 1500T&T/30MB plan and see if the web will even work.
very true!! i will probably give it a shot tomorrow.

Im probably gonna get flamed but W/E ..i already looked around and cant find it.
First let me say i am a T-mobile retail manager. I got myself a tab, as the past would portray, u used to be able to have a device as such and use the basic web2go data and be fine. I will tell you guys flat out. they do not educate myself or my employees as to how the apns/data SOCS fit each device as far as system wise.. obviously android gets android data and so on. I was under the impression i would be able to use this tab with my existing android data. Now as a T-mobile employee we usually get good perks. Not as good as Att but pretty good. However, with data cards and now the tab we are to pay the same amount as the customers...39.99 for 5gbs...NO THANKS. I was thinking we would be able to change the imei to say a basic phone but i know i know its illegal or W/E. My PLEA great wizards of XDA how the hell do we get around this. i already tried the main three apns epc.tmobile.com, wap.voicestream.com, internet2.voicestream.com. No luck just defaults me to my.t-mobile.com
So i was wondering if maybe its easier than just changing imei. maybe just device ID. Any insight would be awesome cause im gonna be kinda pissed i bought this thing as a wifi device only.
so im the only one in xda that does not want to pay 40 a month when we can pay 10 or 30.
This is my first reply since I get registered today
I'm on your same situation but I'm not employee I'm a Tmobile costumer with an Unlimited Voice and Data Plan and I paid around 85 dollars monthly. I just purchased the GT on eBay and I don't want to pay for a contract for additional data access when I just paid one.
I know about people tethering, but I don't know what consecuences this could be have. I know the smart people of XDA would found a way we can take the godbless of use internet on the go without a new contract.
So I will be seeking for this theme here and other great stuff at this Forum!!!!
It is really not that easy since more then likely it is done on the network side not the phone.
I am also trying to do the same thing. Switched out the build.prop file (id file if you will) with that of a virbant on froyo and same result.
Changed the uid to desktop. same problem
But If i wifi tether to my mytoch it is fine - just a huge battery killer for my phone.
There is same identifier that the network is finding (highly doubt it would be imei since happens imedialty) that the device accessing is the tab vs what ever phone.
Any one try with a foreign sw version?

Im in the same boat also and I'm an employee also. I have been using pp mbb with mine till i figure a way aroind the data soc and the imei blocking

Me too. I could care less about the voice capabilities, but I would love to be able to stick my android sim in the device and have internet. I am almost at the point where I would rather go ahead and flash it with the euro modem and be stuck with EDGE since I only need the data for google maps and such.
So in this post, the person indicates it's the IP range. Wonder if there's anyway to do this from the device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840907
If you did flash the Euro rom, would you even get 2g without the webconnect plan?
Did you see this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876178
I don't have a custom rom installed. I just backed up EFS folder and then removed everything inside and it worked perfectly.
let me get this straight
what ee talking about here is to get a basic say 5 dollar a line add on, then use a web to go 10 dollar plan and it would work on the tab? by the way, if I tether from my cutom HD2, will they care if I wifi tether to my tab? its supposed to be an unlimited data plan (tmo us)..
T-zones / web2go
So if I flash rom on my mytouch 4g I will able to use my 5.99 t-zones plan or a 9.99 web2go plan?
I'm using a vibrant to tether to my tab. I am, however, using t-zones as my internet as opposed to an android plan. 5.99 unlimited 3g, woot.

You'd have to block your imei.
Hey everyone!
First post, woo-hoo!
Anyway, I am still rocking a Motorola RAZR v3 and currently looking to upgrade. The HD2 seems to be everyone's favorite phone around here, and the flexibility looks awesome. My question is, will AT&T force me to buy a data plan? Can I turn off EDGE? (I know I can not access 3G, but wifi is fine).
Thanks!

Used to be on AT&T and they will not force you on a data plan as long as you don't tell them you are using a smartphone. Just make sure to get an unlocked HD2 and slip your RAZR SIM card into the HD2 and you should be good to go. You will only be in EDGE and not have access to 3G. Not sure if you are able to turn off EDGE. 3G you can turn off.
i just did this yesterday.. i went out and bought a cheap 15 dollar go phone
that had internet on it and just slapped my sim in it and of course no internet
so had to call them and they set me up with the 10 dollar unlimited plan
from the 25 dollar smartphone plan
the funny part was the guy kept saying do you have a blackberry i was like um no i have a fuze and this cheap samsung a197 ..he says the imei is coming back to a crackberry
so i read off the a197 imei and he got it registered ..so im thinking the hd2 shows up as a crackberry so just dont call them LOL and yes only edge works and make sure you check use only 2g network
Ok so heres the deal on this. I was to cheap to buy data plan when i had my iphone. I bought it off a buddy. so when i got my hd2 and unlocked it thru some website. i slapped my sim card into it. still did not have a data plan. it connected to edge and updated weather horray.....not so much. so now i was dreading buying a data plan.
well i went on line to check what my options were and my phone was not listed. it says i have some old ass nokia. legitly.....(i think this is becouse its a t-mobile IMEI number or sumthing) non the less i went on to the add a plan online. and it offered me the 15 dollar a month unlimited data plan for all att crappy phones!!! YESSSHHH
i was so happy.
The only complaint i have is that the US Tmobile branded HD2 the one i own, has the same freq for edge(2g) but a dif freq for 3g. sooooo if you are using this phone on att. you will never ever have 3g service, the hardware wont even support it. there are HD2s that support it but not the tmobile ones.
Best of luck. and i hope my deal with att isint a fluke, it makes sence that They dont have the IMEI. Like how they can track iphones and smartphones and rape you for cash. but they cant with a tmobile phone.
haha
I am on ATT and you can have them BLOCK DATA for you
If you own your phone outright and it is not an ATT phone, you can request them to block data(and texting if you want to). I have been using my HD2 for about a year with the data plan blocked and wifi only for data.
I recommend going into a store, I have found them to be very helpful.
its dead easy to turn off data completely, (and leave mms working)
most roms have a power widget which has a data toggle, or you just delete the apn.
For networks that use single data/mms apn's, just change the APN type to only say mms, so it only uses it for mms, and perhaps delete the username/password/apn entries so that it cant connect even if it tried, but leaving the mms settings intact.
For networks with one apn for data, one for mms, just delete the data one.
However, when you are only getting edge, the network handles it more like voice rather than data anyway, (think dialup vs broadband) so they wont mind as much that you dont have a proper smartphone plan in the same way they would if you had hsdpa clogging up their network.
I just switched to AT&T from T-mobile, Only cause i call mexico a lot, and they're the only ones to offer a decent plan for mexico. Anyways, I had an HD2, i went with the Inspire, cause it's basically the same phone just with soft keys, and a better camera, but if i'm not mistaken, everything under the hood is the same. It comes with Android, and should you ever want data, it's there.
But, I'm pretty sure you out to be able to just buy one and put your sim in it, and they'll never care right? I haven't priced them, i bought my inspire while switching over. But then you just tell it to only use 2g networks and you should be fine i would think

nope if you bought a inspire locked to att it will automatically register as a smartphone and they will nail you with the 25 dollar 2 gb plan
well flashing to pageplus was really easy through QPST and getting the MIN/phone number from kittywireless to do the OTA flash.
I know we have Pageplus, Cricket, Virgin Mobile, Boost, and MetroPCS to flash our Epic 4G other than Sprint as a carrier. My question is, other than pageplus and cricket, the rest needs donor phones? I was checking out virgin mobile, because the 3g speeds in chicago looks good and the price is right for me, and the $25 plan is pretty good stuff.
Most of the folks here are getting Crickets unlimited $55 plans, but I mostly use wifi, and I want a little data for here and there, and also I dont use a lot of minutes since I mostly use sip/voip via wifi.
For the services that require a donor phone, does it usually have to be a android or smartphone? Not the cheap flipphone with wap you see at walgreens, cvs ? Seems like to switch over to Boost, MetroPCS, Virgin, it would cost at least $50-$70 for a donor phone.. So im wondering if theres a cheap alternative.
And regarding cricket, I was looking at their pamplet and regarding their paygo service, $1 a day unlimited calls/data whenever you use it, I was told by online sales chat that I need to activate that service at a local store. Is that unlimited mobile WAP type data? Or 3g data? Kind of confusing..
I already have my QPST ready to go, save the file ready to write when I get my MIN/phone number to flash my epic 4g. does their online activation provide a phone number so I can use to prepare QPST and flash my phone with the roaming file etc. and do a OTA activation? Or anyone know of some online dealer like kitty that does that and provide the phone number to you? I called a few stores around here, and they just tell me they dont deal with non cricket phones, or "know" how to activate non cricket phones. I guess they just dont want to waste time dealing with a customer not spending big bucks...
Thanks guys, and no need to explain about anything legal or illegal, everything posted is for educational purposes or fictional writing and reading jk
Along the same lines - anyone know of a site that compares all the MVNO/Prepaid services for cost/features?
I know some folks out there are getting crazy good deals - Virgin seems like a good way to go although I think they raised their plan to $35 recently. That is still good for basically the same service sprint provides sans VZ roaming. I have only heard of getting Virgin/Boost through a donor phone and as you said they are selling for quite a bit simply because lots of people are buying them to use as donor phones so the price goes up.
Hopefully some others will chime in with some good options, good luck!
I can only vouch for Virgin Mobile..
Being someone who volunteers with only donations as a source of income, I can tell you that while it isn't cheap, it was still do-able and affordable, (Even for me!)
You save according to street smart vs convenience. There are overhead expenses that are residual and one-time when making the switch.
On Virgin Mobile, you need an Android Smartphone, preferably one that can be read, or you may be left out in the cold with nobody being able to assist you very far.
Seeing that Virgin Mobile stores weren't anywhere around me, I simply bought one from across the states for 68$, A Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept. Costs will vary, with the most convenient method being walking into Wal-Mart and buying a brand new one for $100, or so.
Now, say you want to keep your current number, you'll need to keep the old company's bill paid, as well as pay for the first month of your new Virgin Mobile Phone, to port the number over.
After that is done, you need to pay up the 35$ cost to start up your first month of Virgin Mobile. You can then end your ex-carrier, without worries.
From there, you follow the guide I wrote up on Virgin Mobile, and enjoy your Samsung Epic 4G on Virgin Mobile with CM9 Beta 2.
Or you could do another company like boost and add more steps to the process.
Ouch so you pretty much verified the cons of switching to virgin due to the use of donor phones. This is probably a good deal for most people that has virgin for their area and the plans are pretty cheap. The pamphlet i saw has a $25 plan and $35 which i think includes 1500mins and 30gb data. People who needs this should talk to ^^^ I thought about this route but want to see other alternatives due to my circumstances
So what about cricket? Is anyone on paygo plan or the $1 once you make 1 phone call or use data which allows you unlimited usage for the day. I barely use my pageplus minutes and use sip for phone calls through wifi. I dont text because i have a thing about obsessive texting and being anti social so i rather talk on the phone or face to face. So the paygo plan looks attractive as i could be using crickets service 10 to 15 days out of the month. But when i was at walgreens looking at pamphlets and seen mobile data instead of 3g data so i wanted to confirm those who used the per day prepaid plans that you get 3g data. Also is it $1 or $2 a day with the data.
pageplus working great on cm9 but for talk text. Data is slow and expensive around 100kbit/s.
Kinda OT but for the member above, you seem very knowledgable and appreciate your reply because i understand and appreciate your help for folks that dont have the time to figure it out. My question is when im on cm9 and even tho7ugh i disabled my sprint profiles in qpst, if i turn on 4g it connects to sprint still. Is that a eeprom preprogrammed deal and not removable? Not like i want to but im interested in figuring out how that works. I know it connects and you do get a dhcp addy and a gateway and pair of dns addys. Obviously its not usable but is there any info on how retains its instructions to connect to sprint when you enable 4g?
And again if anyone know someone online that can activate the cricket paygo service and provide a min/phone number after paying for the $15 activation so i can ota activate? Or does cricket provide it when you do it online on the website?

well I switched my friends epic and wife's to straight talk with the doner phone that costs 5 bucks on Walmart website. We are on the vzw side of straight talk and the 3g speeds are pretty good. The only kicker for the epic is you need a doner and a vzw phone to get the 3g info to place on your epic. My wife and I pay 3 months at a time and since we live in Cali no tax which brings the total cost down to 42 a month for all unlimited. The only thing that doesn't work right out of the gate is mms but the same is true for cricket with the epic. Service has been great and the coverage is the same as vzw prepaid. There's a tut on how to do it by justan in the general section.
