Im probably gonna get flamed but W/E ..i already looked around and cant find it.
First let me say i am a T-mobile retail manager. I got myself a tab, as the past would portray, u used to be able to have a device as such and use the basic web2go data and be fine. I will tell you guys flat out. they do not educate myself or my employees as to how the apns/data SOCS fit each device as far as system wise.. obviously android gets android data and so on. I was under the impression i would be able to use this tab with my existing android data. Now as a T-mobile employee we usually get good perks. Not as good as Att but pretty good. However, with data cards and now the tab we are to pay the same amount as the customers...39.99 for 5gbs...NO THANKS. I was thinking we would be able to change the imei to say a basic phone but i know i know its illegal or W/E. My PLEA great wizards of XDA how the hell do we get around this. i already tried the main three apns epc.tmobile.com, wap.voicestream.com, internet2.voicestream.com. No luck just defaults me to my.t-mobile.com
So i was wondering if maybe its easier than just changing imei. maybe just device ID. Any insight would be awesome cause im gonna be kinda pissed i bought this thing as a wifi device only.
so im the only one in xda that does not want to pay 40 a month when we can pay 10 or 30.
This is my first reply since I get registered today
I'm on your same situation but I'm not employee I'm a Tmobile costumer with an Unlimited Voice and Data Plan and I paid around 85 dollars monthly. I just purchased the GT on eBay and I don't want to pay for a contract for additional data access when I just paid one.
I know about people tethering, but I don't know what consecuences this could be have. I know the smart people of XDA would found a way we can take the godbless of use internet on the go without a new contract.
So I will be seeking for this theme here and other great stuff at this Forum!!!!
It is really not that easy since more then likely it is done on the network side not the phone.
I am also trying to do the same thing. Switched out the build.prop file (id file if you will) with that of a virbant on froyo and same result.
Changed the uid to desktop. same problem
But If i wifi tether to my mytoch it is fine - just a huge battery killer for my phone.
There is same identifier that the network is finding (highly doubt it would be imei since happens imedialty) that the device accessing is the tab vs what ever phone.
Any one try with a foreign sw version?

Im in the same boat also and I'm an employee also. I have been using pp mbb with mine till i figure a way aroind the data soc and the imei blocking

I'm not sure about just changing the IMEI but if you want to use your phones data plan and tether it wifi here is a good way to do it.

Me too. I could care less about the voice capabilities, but I would love to be able to stick my android sim in the device and have internet. I am almost at the point where I would rather go ahead and flash it with the euro modem and be stuck with EDGE since I only need the data for google maps and such.
So in this post, the person indicates it's the IP range. Wonder if there's anyway to do this from the device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840907
If you did flash the Euro rom, would you even get 2g without the webconnect plan?
Did you see this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876178
I don't have a custom rom installed. I just backed up EFS folder and then removed everything inside and it worked perfectly.
let me get this straight
what ee talking about here is to get a basic say 5 dollar a line add on, then use a web to go 10 dollar plan and it would work on the tab? by the way, if I tether from my cutom HD2, will they care if I wifi tether to my tab? its supposed to be an unlimited data plan (tmo us)..
T-zones / web2go
So if I flash rom on my mytouch 4g I will able to use my 5.99 t-zones plan or a 9.99 web2go plan?
I'm using a vibrant to tether to my tab. I am, however, using t-zones as my internet as opposed to an android plan. 5.99 unlimited 3g, woot.

You'd have to block your imei.

I had a touch pro2 for a while and used the web connect data plan with it. I had full 3G and push email. When I transferred the SIM to my vibrant, I get redirected to a web2go page saying my phone is incompatible with this plan. How does Tmobile verify this?
Google search works, almost everything else doesn't. My touch pro2 is just as much as a smartphone as the vibrant under Tmo's eyes. So I think I wasn't supposed to have been able to use the data plan that I had with it. My TP2 was unlocked if it matters at all.

Tmo has a separate data plan (Which is basically the same as the other) for Android devices. My brother took his sim out of his Touch Pro 2 with 3g data plan and placed it into my G1 (after I got my Vibrant) and it didn't allow him to be able to use data on my G1. He had to call and they had to swap his data plan over to the Android plan.
Now on the flipside of that, my Fiance took her sim out of her myTouch 3g and placed it in his Touch Pro 2 and data worked perfectly. So it looks like the Android data plan trumps all data plans.
Android smartphones are not supported with their old Web Connect plans which are being phased out anyway. You may be able to get T-Mobile to give you a discount on the Android Data Plan given that you're an existing customer, but that's about it...
Awe.
Well thats no fun... I find browsing on the TP2's opera mini and Tethering on it to be just as enjoyable as my vibrant. I wonder how they figure out what you are using.
I was asking because I have a web only plan... I pay 40 dollars for unlimited data, period. I thought I was going to get away with it on android too.
I would have to pay 70 Dollhairs if I want internet on my android! because I would also need a talk plan. thats no fun.
I have been doing research and I've found speculation that T-mobile uses the IMEI number to tell whether your phone is android or not. I don't think this is true given the fact that Tmobiles site depends on user input rather than automatic detection to know what phone the person is using.
@Oldarney: I've got a T-Mo unlimited data plan for Android and I don't pay anywhere near $70 (USD). Not even close. Barely more than what I was paying for Blackberry service.
I should add that I've been with T-Mo forever and have a sweet, "loyal customer" voice rate. Maybe I'm getting a break of some kind on data too.
Edited after re-reading: Your $70 _includes_ the voice. Okay. I gotcha now. Never mind.
Tmobile is building there phones with special hardware so that it can detect when you're using an android phone on there network with the wrong plan. That's why your old plan wouldn't work. Its the same for blackberry phones/data plans

Op systems
Depending on the op system on the phone the company has to configure their end. So, if you have an android the account needs to be sync'd for that type of op system. If you have an winmo 6.5 then it has to be sync'd with that system by TMO and if you have rim (blackberry) you have be to sync'd with that. I know this from personal experience no biggie

It does use an auto detect. My fiance bought her Vibrant out of contract and when i checked our account online, both my line and hers showed the Vibrant as our default devices. So yes, it does update it through IMEI.

when did you check cause it can take up to a week to update the imei to the account. but that's how it works (getting the device's imei), insurance also bases coverage on the imei. some stores update the imei manually when you upgrade, but that's a waste of time because it will happen automatically.

I think it is something along these lines, perhaps being oversimplified a bit. I believe it may have to do with how the OS on the phone makes the data connection with Android being more like a true "always on" connection (more akin to ethernet) and WinMo using a type of PPP or similar that is in effect "always on." The mobile operator has to have their back-end set up for this and there are probably different settings (IP addresses, connection types, etc.) built into ROMs for Android and WinMo. That being said, I really don't know if they track it by IMEI or not, but I imagine they certainly could.

there are different internet packages for each phone os, not entirely sure what the technical differences are, though. and they do track by imei, i know that for sure (i used to work for tmob and my wife still does).

I was using the Rhodium ANdroid hack for windows mobile and The internet worked fine... maybe there is something to that. I gave up on it... I using the web interface to jump me to talk plan and then back to the a data plan, this time android.
they use the imei to check what phone you have. but for some reason, it's still showing me as a G1 so yay! i've had this phone for more than a couple months now i think.
also, i only pay 20 bucks per month for UNLIMITED data. i dont know why you're paying 40..... they offer a 30 dollar plan for regular users.... and i dont know where you got the $70 figure... that's just rediculous. i dont even pay that much for home internet.
At one time I had both a Vibrant and a Nexus One. I lost the Nexus while I had my sim in my Vibrant. I placed a claim with Asurion. They asked me to call T-mobile and find out what the last date the SIM card was in my Nexus One. Tmobile gave me a date that was exactly correct. I don't think I even placed a call that day with the Nexus.
So they know what phone your sim is in. Whether it is reporting IMEI number or Build Number or whatever. If they have a list of IMEI's in their system it is easy for them to know, IMEI filtering, like another poster stated.
IMEI numbers are unique and tied to each phone, not really a huge mystery.
IMEI is like the MAC address that PCs use
except that you can change your mac address while you can't change the IMEI address on the vibrant, and if you know how then let me know.
On another note I am really getting the hang of this swype thing.

A lot of confusion
This is way easier than explained in here. Basically, data transfer has to follow a protocol. So, if the firmware/software does not contain say an android language based compiler, then the unit is unable to send or receive the check sum...or ... in other word it can not make sense of what it is reading. T Mobile does this for just really one basic reason, It make the data transfer smaller and more efficient, which, in turn, makes all the data on the system smaller and easier to manage. It is a function of saving cost and improving speed. This is kinda a standard ever since 3G
T Mobile runs slightly different protocol for the different op systems:
Win mobile
Android
Blackberry
I know this to be true as I have migrated from Black berry to win mobile to android and each time i had to call and they send a sync signal and then the phone is recognized and everything works correctly. There has never been a cost just associated doing this.
That has been my experience. my 2-cents
I was wondering if i can use unlocked tmobile htc hd2 with the $10 data plan (unlimited) that is available for non smartphones. Will tmobile realize that i am using htc hd2 and upgrade it to smartphone data plan? i am gonna make a contract with a non smartphone and add that 10 dollar data plan to use it on my htc hd2 Do you have to have an Unlocked htc hd2 (not tmobile branded) to do that? is it even possible either way?
Yes it is possible to do such a thing, but for how long is currently unknown. T-Mobile has recently started denying people using the non-smartphone internet with smartphones internet access as it is a violation of the TOS...so good luck!
So i can do it with the tmobile branded unlocked htc hd2? but dont they know that i i am using htc hd2 if i use the 10$ data plan and automatically upgrade it?
Yes they will know you are using an HD2, and yes, it is possible that they will upgrade it automatically. My advice; just opt for the 20USD unlimited smartphone data from the start...you won't have to setup the proxy or live in fear that your plan will be upgraded.
Isnt it 30 USD? if it was 20 then i can probably get the data plan but i am pretty sure the data plan is $30. Wait so if you dont get the $10 data plan on the tmobile branded unlocked htc hd2, will they know its a hd2?
There's no way to get around it. They will know what phone you're using. I do not know if they will make a change to your plan without confirming with you.
I don't know how you will actually enable the $10 plan in the first place though.
Thats a good point aswell. You have to have a device that supports the 10USD plan to even add it to your plan, so you may not be able to anyways. And the full internet is either 20 or 30 depending on your contract arrangement.
I recently got my phone and it's working for me. I get HSDPA speed with the $10 internet.
Yeah it should work.... just so you know you are defrauding the T-Mobile network. There's still a lot folks out there that are apparently still on the T-Zone plan as well....
Actually if you know or are familiar with those Asian run phone shops and ask nicely you don't even need a dumb phone to setup the $10 plan, the reps that work there will just call T-mobile and defraud the whole system for you.....
Yeah... that's just jolly.

Does it really bother you that somebody else has a good deal going with t-zones on the HD2? If it makes you feel better, T-Mobile will probably be forcing users to upgrade their plans starting this Wednesday.
Yeah to me it kinda does, because they know they are screwing the system but continue to do it. Anyways I formally ask that this NOT turn into another debate about the morallity of people using the 10USD plan versus the correct one. Thanks.

Bother me, nope.? I don't even have data plan... i refuse to pay for it when i can get free wifi @ my home/campus/work....
The OP asked a question and i voiced his options, all of them.... whether he chooses to to take the dark route or not is his business. In addition i don't see how you can justify calling T-Zones as "has a good deal going" when you are in fact defrauding the network, which i have clearly pointed out in my previous response. My advice is pretty much borderline crack pot shady... but it's been discussed about here numerous times and t-mobile has done nothing to fix his loophole.... yet...
Just to add about the $20 internet plan. I have it for my HD2 (part of family plan), the rep added it when we were renewing the contract and ordering the phones (my sister got the 3G slide which came with the $25 plan). So if you want it, try calling them and talking to a rep, they should be able to add it for you (YMMV).
T-mobile can block you at any time since they do have a database of their own IMEIs and they know what device is accessing their network by it's IEMI that is transmitted every time the phone accesses the network.
It would be a very simple task for T-mobile to block the non supported devices for that data plan
Well here is what happend when I upgraded one of my lines. I just upgraded to an HD2, a couple days later theytossed on a 104 web plan. Which is fine cuz I want to use the web anyways. when I first was using my HD2 it said that it needed a subcription to access the web, blah blah. So, i changed the wap settings to internet2.voicestream.com and it works great. 3g speeds and everything.
Why did you change to the slower proxy?

The stock epc.tmo doesnt work when you have the 104 (non smart phone plan). The speeds are the same with the internet2 settings. unless you know of a different one that works a well. It works just fine.
I had a phone recently, Nokia 5530, and had the 10 dollar internet plan and I noticed depending where I was in the country I sometimes would get full internet access and other times I would get off the standard tzone areas and it would show subscription upgrade required message.
I think it might depend on where you live for this to work. Perhaps the WAP settings might also work.
There is a way to get the $10 t-zone plan on your HD2
Here is a simple way to get the t-zone on your HD2..
1) Login to your t-mobile account via the web.. register first if you haven't do so.
2) when you login, T-mobile might choose your phone (maybe HD2 already selected).. at this moment, change your phone to any non-smartphone.. like samsung T509 or any non-smartphone as your default phone.
3) go to change service and add the $10 t-zone internet to your plan
4) set your HD2 with the right APN setting you're OK.
5) For me, if you're using internet2.voicestream.com in Winmo works OK and in Android works OK.
This is a cheated way or gray area... Either way T-mobile make extra $$$ from you. I think T-mobile knows this loop hole, but they keep it open because they don't want to upset us cheapie????
my 2 cents
did they get rid of this? I do not see the option anymore.
Just spent about four days with TMobile on the device getting connecting on their network (Even had a ticket). Finally found out that they had me on the wrong data plan. The device needs the Web Connect plan to connect. Being so new of a device, they had the wrong plan provisioned for me as I went straight to WiFi and did not check. I currently have my device subsidy unlocked to use my AT&T and added the Ad-Hoc supplicant which I thought was the cause. After several days, someone finally realized the plan was incorrect since a Tmo Blackberry Sim worked perfectly fine.
Moral of the story, have them check to see if you have the Even More webConnect Overage Free Plan for $39.99.
Same thing happened to me and I didn't discover it til yesterday... had been using wifi all along... but in my case it was because I was on a voice plan...
effing Tmo.... just about to kiss 'em goodbye. Which makes me sad because AT&T is really not an option for me... and I don't think phone calling will be enabled on VZ or Sprint.

I cancelled my Tmobile account today. After I got the Tab, I went to my account online and switched it to a voice/data/txt plan, which took effect today. I quickly tested it, and It was blocked, so I called up and cancelled.
The first customer service girl said "Awww!" when I told her I was cancelling.
The second one asked if I would like to be switched to the proper web connect plan. I said no thank you, your service plans are inadequate for my needs.
They just lost my $2300/year
Asshats!
Yeah... I think I'm heading down the same path... after I discovered that the voice plan was causing me to be redirected to Tmo on 2G/3G... no flashing, nothing else ... I just figure, **** 'em.
If they want to make it this difficult to use it as a phone, when AT&T didn't go to any of the efforts Tmo has gone to to block calling plus data, it's just not worth fighting them anymore.
Sadly, this is probably the death knell for the Tab for me... unless I just resign myself to carrying two devices... or perhaps I might try the ATT and see if wifi will work okay... their 3G service is terribly spotty in my area.
If it's only going to be an internet device and not a phone, might as well go for the less than half price Archos 70...
Call me stupid i guess, but im gonna try to stick it out and see what happens. Is there any prepaid plans out there that will work with att and get 3g? I dont want to have to get a contract with them if i do have to give up on tmo.

How is it that it wouldn't be a hindrance to you guys?

It's just the fact that U.S. carriers decided to not include the phone feature that is getting us to want to do it. if it came with phone half of these discussions wouldn't even exist(obviously).
Change IMIE
Can we change IMIE on t-mobile tab to get what we want. I think we all know tmobile is blocking tab because the IMIE # is in their database.
I wanna stick to t-mobile bcoz I have 5.99 Tzones unlimited data plan. Im currently using iphone 3G.
I can use a TT Tab but then it works only on Edge. What Im looking for is a Nexus 1 like Tab which can be used for 5.99 tzones plan.

Clear the US carriers seem to think that if they don't include voice, you'll be forced to have two contracts - one for the phone and one for the Tab. The irony is that most people wouldn't even attempt to use the Tab as a phone except in a few limited situations (note, I said most, not all! ), so would've probably had two contracts anyway.
I find it very hard to believe that all 4 major US carriers came to this conclusion on their own, at the same time, which would lead me to believe there's a cartel here.
Regards,
Dave
I feel sorry for our American friends.
Here in the UK, We can get iPhone on any network at very competative prices and the Galaxy Tab Standalone for £469 unlocked and use any network we choose with it, including Phone, DATA, etc..
Where in the US the networks seem to take advantage of the monopoly they have and charge rediculously high prices for equipment and services.

People have been trying their hardest to find a way to get this working, as somewhat described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845263
Problem is that T-mobile is blocking web access to the tab IMEI's that try to use anything other than the Webconnect data packages. At least, that's the current theory that I've seen. Everyone has reported that they get taken straight to T-mobile's site or some similar page when trying to navigate the web. IMEI makes the most sense, and I believe that its not possible (or just very difficult) to change the IMEI of a device. There's no way to change that value on T-mobile's end since their systems automatically recognize the device based on its IMEI once it has been in use for ~3 days. (I work as a sales rep there, and I've tried to find a way to no avail).
Im wondering, Tmobile has a fairly decent prepaid plan, unlimited talk and text w/2gig data. I wonder if that'll work. Im probably going to try it if no one else has. Im using simple mobile right now, but definitely dropping them after my month is over. Supposedly unlimited data, but apparently capped at 1gig, and very rude customer service!! But I think by doing prepaid with tmobile, it shouldnt matter what device you are using, you dont even have to tell them what its for when you purchase it.
They will know because their network will detect the IMEI number. Unless you buy a tab from a different carrier or an unbranded one, they will know.

I'm assuming it will treat it similarly to the postpaid accounts, seeing how they just came out with the prepaid webconnect plans. My guess is that they still use the IMEI detection, but it could be worth a shot. $70 is a steep price for testing purposes, so I'd say if anything spend the $30 for the 1500T&T/30MB plan and see if the web will even work.
very true!! i will probably give it a shot tomorrow.

Hi all
I have the old unlimited plan that does not allow tethering. I have been trying to find a solution that would work without root. So far nothing has worked for me. Not even foxfi that people day works with Verizon has worked. Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Other than this one thing missing, I love the phone and find no reason to want to root it even at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

have you try PDAnet
Haven't tried that yet. Was hoping for a wireless solution but that can work in some instances too. Usually use it for my tablet more than a computer but worth a shot.

I am waiting on my S7e but I put it on my tablet TAB A and it has a wireless hotspot, so yeah you can do it wirelessly. I should receive the S7e monday. I had it but had to return as i was on a lease and I wanted to get the BOGO promo. and now it was backorder.
Unfortunately that doesn't seem to run any differently. Enables but the connected device still goes to the up sell page.

you should pay for it.... and stop giving the rest of us a bad name by stealing data....
Just my opinion
That's the thing. I can't pay for it. They won't give me the option to even if I wanted to. I have the unlimited data plan but for my rate plan they never added the option to tether to mine and won't. I'm still paying for unlimited data though.
Switch plans new unlimited plans comes with 14gb free tethering other than that your SOL
I would if they would let me keep my @home phone line on the new plan but they won't. I need that more than I need tethering. Only use it for work email and reading on my tablet on occasion the computer.
Depends on what you're tethering. I had the S7 for a week and a half and used pdanet (returned it due to lack of root) to tether to my laptop. On my laptop browser I used opera browser with a user agent switcher (Safari for windows) and it worked fine, no upsell, mobile hot spot data not affected. When tethering with Pdanet to a phone however my hot spot data got dinged.
Tethering to a phone or Tab You'll most likely need root and WiFi Tether Router.
Hope that helps. Don't forget to create a new APN with ipv4 in both fields.

You're paying for unlimited data on your smartphone as defined in the ToS.

The terms of service don't really specify that anywhere that I saw the last time I read it. But because tmobile does not offer the services I need on a plan I am forced to find work arounds. If they would let me keep my at home line and go to a Tethering plan I wouldn't have this problem.

You stated that you're on an old data plan that doesn't allow tethering, right? So, the terms you agreed to doesn't allow tethering, correct? We're you made aware of the fact that tethering wasn't included? If so, you know very well that the unlimited data portion of your plan is only for unlimited data on your smartphone.

The plan I have does not say anything on the literature if I could or not anywhere. I could tether without root on my s3 and on my blackberry. Only on newer devices I can't and anytime I talk with tmobile they only say that my plan isn't compatible with my device and I need to get a new plan. The new plan doesn't support at home landlines.

Well get separate plan with tethering or pay for Internet
I would need to buy a Tethering device just for that only if I wanted a separate plan. I only have one cell phone and the at home line on my current plan. If I move my cell to another plan they say I need to cancel the at home line. And I don't want to purchase another device and a new line of service at over 40 a month just for the few times and little amount I use it just because their system won't let me keep my at home line to get a plan that is supposedly compatible with my phone to tether.
