Attention !!! Htc g1 firmwaree - G1 General

i have been using the htc g1 for several months now and have noticed that its performance is not as good as it used 2 be. by this i mean the interface is very slow now and in performing small tasks it tends to lag frequently. my phone is updated to cupcake 1.5. i am wondering if any if you can suggest ways to improve the functionality of my phone for example, by installing a different firmware. i have tried deleting several of my apps from the market but that only improved the situation slightly. thanks

Do you have root? if so,then just upgrade to Cyanogen's latest build his are much faster then the stock firmware. Also, rather then randomly deleting apps, have you tried any of the task managers? There are apps that run constantly in the background, enough of them at once will slow your phone down big time. Do you have a lot of widgets, apps or folders on your home screen? Too many and it bogs down your home screen.

yes i do have a task manager and i only seems to help slight. i do have apps on my home screen but not so much only about 3 pages worth and i think the phone should be able to handle that. my phone is not rooted. how do i get the firmware u are talking about. more info would be great.

A fresh wipe would make it VERY fast. Uninstalling apps and such from stock firmware doesn't really help... well, it didnt atleast for me

Goto each one on the list and it will have a button that says Clear Cache and Clear Data. Tap both of those and after doing them all you should be fine. It might take awhile to do them all but it will fix your problem.

HTC HD2 running very slow...

Hey all,
Have noticed that my device has been running ever so slow past few weeks. Nothing is running in task manager and am finding myself resetting my device many times per day.
Any others having or had the same problem?

have you installed any cabs recently? try downloading clearRAM but you shuoldnt really be needing to reboot it several times a day.
Have you flashed a custom rom? or using stock?
Havent installed any cab's recently. But noticed it has been slowing down since installing cookies tab. Plus its running on vodafone rom. Already have clearRam installed, that doesnt really help.
The device slows right down, even the animated is rubbish. Instead of it being smooth.. it kinda judders
If i were you i would install a custom ROM - go for it dude!
Remember to back up your data first, been reading that the home tab doesnt uninstall very well.
It may force you to do a hard reset like me
Make sure you have the chainfire drivers installed and used a rom based on the 2.13 base. Nothing but speed here

The best thing you can do is take a popular rom like dutty, energy, artemis, clean ex.
Well, the 1st thing I've always do when come to a new forum is click the Views function for descending, to see which is most popular 1st, then start from there

well i cant say which is the best as i havent tried many, but im running the energy, and its amazing.
I can confirm the problem was down to cookies home tab. I uninstalled it earlier, and the device has been running great ever since. So am gutted as I really enjoyed using cookies home tab, but it just kept slowing my device down after a few hours of use
My phone is slow as crap as well. After reading the posts I am going to try a new rom.
Really strange that lots of people are currently complaining about a slow device, mine has also become suddenly very laggy. I have the Elagancia ROM which has C00kies home tab built in - maybe it is this program that is the brunt of the trouble?
chainfire is not speeding up the phone at all. maybe 1 or 2 programs that most dont use, thats it. no use installing.
Cookies def slows down the phone. Especially if you have the weather animation on. If you got 3 full pages of shortcuts its slow. Recommend using 1 page.
I ain't trying a new ROm as I am not having problems with the VF ROM currently installed.
But I had to hard reset my device after uninstalling Cookie's tab, because it messed a few things up. Thank god I got SPB backup on this device.
Won't be going back to Cookies home tab tho... great tweak for the device, but with having the reset the device upto 5 times (or more) as day is a bit frustrating for me.

Didnt even think about reducing the number of pages, I changed it from 3 to 1 and not its so much faster.
I have been having the same issue on my phone and after deleting all of my text messages (you have to delete them, then go to deleted items and clear them) my phone is running much faster.

How many apps should I have,to stop slowness?

I have only had the phone a few days and having installed about 10apps the performance of the phone has slowed a lot.i have task killer installed and making sure I'm shutting down most apps when not in use, But everything has slowed since I installed the last fm app
Is there a directory where temp files are stored?
Any help would be great!
Chances are pretty high that you have the same problem as I did, that one of the apps are slowing it down in some manner. You could also replace the TwLauncher (Samsungs ****ty home app) with something like Launcher Pro, which is my recommendation. Just doing that will garner you some performance help.
I already useG launcher pro, but I just restarted my phne and its sped up again.and my ram has increased also.I'm confused
Flash your phone with the modaco Rom and run the lag fix script. This is a temporary problem and a temporary fix. Samsung will fix it soon. They know about it but the phone was rushed out. Needs upgrading that's all. Mine runs very smoothly.

Doesn't look like an Android problem, but a phone specific so you need to rely on a fix from Samsung.
As mentioned above, nothing to do with Android ~ just bad coding on the part of software Apps installed.
What I have done and recommended to many is to get hold of the App 'SystemPanel'.
There are two versions available on The Market ~ SystemPanel Lite (Free) & SystemPanel App (Paid).
Try the Lite version first. It will firstly allow you to see exactly which application is hogging your system/taking memory/using battery performance/etc./etc.
It has detailed graphs/plots and about everything but the kitchen sink added to aid you in finding what is going on.
On top of that it also has the most detailed selection process of closing down Apps.
I purchased it almost immediately and know many others who have followed suit.
I don't get any further performance issues ~ period.
I have 150 apps, and yes there is slowness, i am also using minfreemanager on aggressive setting and this makes a HUGE difference.
Not sure what google can do about bad coding, is there a way to figure out which apps can cause slowness?

I read somewhere that the lag fix will recreate the problem of Android, which is low space to install apps!!
Is that right?

If you really want to find out what is slowing down your system then yes, use SystemPanel.
I can't remember what the difference is between the Lite & Full version.
All I know is I found it looked that good I get the Full version and have not looked back since.
The Lite version will give you some indication what the program does but please check what you get extra in the Full version.

GB debloating: removing "blur_yahoo.apk" breaks contacts.

I just spent some time trying to figure out what had broken my contacts functionality and this was it. Again, removing "blur_yahoo.apk" and the associated .odex file will break the contacts app. After removal, clicking on a contact in the dialer/contact app will just shut the app down. I've no idea why, since the yahoo app is for yahoo mail.

I noticed that freezing some of the messaging/social services also seems to force close the built-in message app too. If you use something like ChompSMS then it isn't a big deal b/c that still works.

You should probably do some more research before you start messing with that b/c it can brick the OS requiring a full install of the ROM. In this case, if you don't do a restore before removing stuff you'll be restoring the SBF file a lot.
But to answer your question though...the app you want is Titanium Backup Pro (aka the pay version b/c of the "Freeze" option.)

Well since the GB build for the DX just came out, I haven't been able to find a definitive thread anywhere (including on MyDroidWorld) listing what is save to remove or at least freeze. As of right now I think it's safe to say that its going to be a trial and error situation.
There are threads somewhere (droidforums?) about which of the 2.1 and 2.2 apps are safe to remove. While there are some new apps, those that were safe before are still safe. Of the new apps, the blur_yahoo is the only one that's given me trouble. Be warned, though, that while you can remove Backup Assistant and Blur Home, if you do a factory reset from within Android (rather than from clockworkmod), your initial install will break and you'll need to sbf if you can't get back into clockwork.
Also, bluremailengine is needed for blurcalendar to work properly. I remove bluremail, all the third party crap, all the social crap, swipe, and various other things I don't use like universal inbox, widgets, etc. Really, you just need to play with it.

Yea I know about those threads (I have one open right now actually) but since this is a whole new version of Blur & version of Android w/ a lot of changes & new options...who knows what Motorola changed or buried deeper into the system.
Thanks for being the guinea pig though I've never had a reason to use factory reset after a ROM is installed so removing BA & Blur Home isn't a big deal.
One question...have you removed the Messaging & Text Messaging apps at all? I still can't figure out what it was that caused the Text Messaging app to quit on me as soon as it was opened. Not that it's a big deal...b/c ChompSMS worked fine for me
Does anyone else notice a SEVERE amount of lag immediately after you reboot the phone? Lasts about 3-4 minutes every time I reboot then goes away. Affects everything from changing home screens, to opening apps, even turning the ringer volume up and down lags...

That's always been a problem with MotoBlur (and even HTC Sense)...it's all the services that load in the background all at once (even after freezing or removing some services.)

I removed all the messaging crap except the default messaging app (conversations.apk). I use Google Voice so I don't use the default app, but I sent myself a message using it and it worked just fine.
Note: you can do a data wipe/factory reset from within clockwork and you'll be fine.
If someone can produce a list of everything in /system/app (well, just the .apks would do), I can mark the ones I've successfully removed without problems.
Ditto to that...I'd be happy to contribute what I've frozen.

Mine takes about 10-15 seconds from the appearance of the homescreen until it's at full speed. Of course, I've overclocked to 1.2 GHz, debloated, zipaligned, implemented drod's rubix tweaks, and used autostarts to kill unnecessary apps from loading at boot.

Hmm. 10-15 seconds seems a tad excessive then. I'm still running stock speed, LPP 0.8.4.1, debloated most major apps and also used Autostarts to kill some apps at boot (as well as in the Widgets menu)...and while I see a slight lag it's not 10-15 seconds.

You're right. I just timed it. About 38 seconds from red M to full appearance of desktop (I've got the boot animation disabled) and about 25 seconds from full desktop to all widgets loaded and ready to go. I underestimated by 40-60%! I'm using the blur launcher, btw.
Something must be wrong with mine then...because mine lasts a good 3 to 4 minutes...and that seems very long for services to be starting...

Home screen sense loading nonsense

Hey guys, so I'm wondering if there is some sort of fix or mod I can do to make my home screen not reload all the time. It's frustrating going into an app for a second and going back to home and having it load which usually takes the majority of the time I have the phone on. Doesn't really matter what app I open, it will even do it coming from settings.
Now I did research this a bit and I don't have any task killers or many widgets on the home screen, to be honest, the stock oem home screen setup has more widgets and whatnot than I do. Can't I increase the cache size or something? Memory space has never been a problem with this phone, in fact I hardly even get over 100mb of used RAM. BTW, every ROM I've flashed has been like this, I'm hoping the stock ROM isn't like this too, its just plain annoying.
Thanks

Which rom do you want to use? You can possibly fix it with certain setting depending on which rom. Also are you just using the stock laucher that comes with each rom? Or do u install a preferred one?
Sent from my Incredible!
He's talking like he's using Sense. To be clear, are you talking about widgets refreshing like with contacts, bookmarks, locations, weather, and the like? The best way to avoid information and widgets being refreshed all the time is to use as much memory as possible all of the time. What's you're looking at is the result of garbage collection... The kernel is tossing out items from memory that haven't been used in a certain amount of time or are assumed to be "stale" information. That kind of garbage collection is set to expire fairy quickly because the first time your calendar widget waits 2 or 3 hours to update and you missed your appointment or date, you'd really wish it didn't wait so long to refresh that data. I'm not sure what can be done to avoid that being the case, but I know it's been a minor irritation to some for a long time. I'm sure if there was an easy fix we'd have seen it by now from HTC themselves. It's commonly sited in reviews as a weakness of the UI compared to iFone.
Hey there,
Was wondering if anyone has found a fix for this yet.
I am having the same problem. If I enter any app and then go back to the home screen, I get the white screen with the green "HTC" logo, then the background appears and reloads everything. It has gotten to the point that every time I open an app it needs to reload. I recently factory reset and changed the SD card to try and fix it, but no luck.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post, hope there is a fix.

I have stock sense and it happens to me every so often too. Maybe once a day so its barely noticable but I always wonder why it does it. Seems to be random and like other poster says I'm either backing out of settings or an app then the htc screen appears and the home page resets all the app icons. Only started doing this after the OTA so maybe something to do with memory management as previously stated in another post.

It hasn't done it in a very long time now. At least a week so not sure what was causing it. I did delete some apps, Netflix being one of them, that I no longer used but I never had Netflix running when it did it.
Problem was a task manager/quick launch app that turned my home button into more like an Alt-Tab. I have since reflashed a new Rom and haven't installed a task manager, and no problems at all. Must have been closing launcher causing it to reboot.

Background apps closing by themselves

Hi everyone,
this problem is following me in every rom I try!
CM, Stock, 5.1.1, 5.0.1, it does'nt matter, in every rom I face this problem....
you see, music is playing in background and some other apps like Hotspot shield are running in background at the same time... as soon as i open firefox, music player completely shuts off and so does hotspot shield...
in every rom I face this problem so now I'm starting to think maybe its a hardware issue... could it be a hardware issue?
anyone with the same issue?
I have Flyme installed on my phone and its a good rom and I dont want to change it, even if I change it im sure the problem with come to me again in other roms, so help me fix this
Android closes apps when it is low on memory (RAM).
I don't think its related to that, I have plenty of ram when that happens, besides, closing all background apps at once?
and why does this always happen when I open a web browser?

I don't have alot of apps running in background, 2GB of RAM and still its not enough for a web browser and a music player beside 5 or 6 other apps that each of 'em need 60 to 70mb of RAM? That's strange
I tried 3 or 4 different web browsers, Chrome, Stock web browser, Firefox, and some other browsers... all the same
This guy also has the same problem:

Maybe one of your apps causes the issues. After all, you changed several ROMs (clean wiped I assume) and the only constant would be the user apps you always install/restore after a flash.

Go one by one and install and uninstall apps, while repeatedly trying to run the ones you stated in your first post. If there is an app causing that problem, just try doing some old fashioned process of elimination.
