I have received news from a tester of the T-Mobile Ameo, that it will be delayed in its release, due to the Units displaying significant problems in battery drain in connection to the mechanical HDD. Apparently the units will be recalled to HTC to have the HDD replaced with flash memory to overcome the issues encountered by many users. Not sure how accurate this information is, but I personally know and trust the tester in question. Whilst he reports that the X7500 is blisteringly fast, he also states that the battery consumption is so appalling that one would not get through a days use of the unit, and that stated talk time of the X7500 is currently well below what is stated/expected.
He also indicated that HTC are considering recalling all units already sold in their various guises. Suppose we will have to wait and see. Looks like a few months of delay at the least with a probability with the Ameo shipping with WM6 Professional.
After all that waiting. Crying or Very sad Well I'd rather buy a fully functioning bit of hardware. This always was a point of weariness on my behalf due to my experience of the SGH-i300 with a mechanical HDD, which was ultimately one of the main reasons for getting rid of it......power consumption!!
I have recently changed the title of this thread due to fellow member, Wu, pointing out to me that the old title was confusing. Thankyou Wu.

I will phone my HTC contact this wednesday and see what he says. He is the senior enginner in HTC Head office so the infor he gives me should be pretty accurate.
For the battery part, i am very happy about it, the user of DOPOD has reported that the battery is very good, personally, i turn on Bluetooth all day, device is connect to 3G 24 hours and the screen is never off. So even when i attach my keyboard to DOPOD, my screen is still on. This allow me to use my device for whole day without charging.
I am very happy about the battery.
With WM6, i thought some member here has report Athena will com with WM6 upgrade when it's available, i think that might be true, because that's what i heard in 3GSM as well.
Ok, i have just spoke to my HTC contact, he say he hasn't hear anything about recalling the HTC device, he wasn't sure about Amoe since that invlove with the T-mobile, but for HTC Advantage, he say there is a delay on the release date, the reason beening ROM not totally complete yet, he say the Rom has some bugs which need to be fix. But it should be out in april sometimes.
Funny enough, he also say last week a senior enginner from DOPOD came by to HTC office to meet with their manager, he is guessing HTC is calling for help from DOPOD, since Dopod have finish their Rom already.
For the battery part, not sure about Ameo, but they have run benchmark on the battery for testing, and the result are very good, but at the end, it will depend on how you use your device.
I have ask him to keep an eye on this info, and will report it here if i hear anything more
All X7500 still being released..too much invested..
I wasn't happy with what I heard and pressed my friend for more info. According to his sources (since Thursday, when I last spoke to him), HTC will now most probably NOT recall the units they have branded for T-Mobile and their Sister company Dopod.
The problem apparently is not so much the consumption side of the HDD (even though it does drain heavily compared to SD cards), but the way the HDD was implemented. It is not very shock proof at all. Supposedly vigorous shaking has resulted in 'knocking the HDD out' as I was told, meaning what exactly is still unclear in the sense that it will either become dislodged or stop functioning.
The problem is the way HTC integrated the HDD into the X7500. Apparently they stripped it down before attaching/soldering and fitting it into the housing, resulting in its physical instability. So not a hardware fault, but a design floor which may cause a hardware fault if the unit should be knocked or even suffer a bump (whilst using GPS) in a bumpy car. And there are supposed to be some hardware issues too, but not severe enough enough to stop its release. So we'll be the paying guinea pigs, while HTC perfect the next model which will definitely come with Flash memory and WM6.
Bottom line is that too much has been invested in the X7500, so its release will go on even it is a few weeks late. Taiwan already sell the Dopod, whilst Netherlands and Germany are already selling the Ameo. T-Mobile UK should be following soon as will the Advantage, but if you're buying.....expect some problems and an updated version by the end of the year, as Sony have plans of releasing a UMPC similar in appearance to the X7500 and HTC will be making serious design changes to their next UMPC-look-alike WM6 device.

I will try to confirm that with my HTC source, i think it make sense, HTC are not too good about writing ROM, that explain why they are asking for help from DOPOD. Anyway, i must say my DOPOD machine is running very smoothly, battery is amazing, and i have successfully change my today screen to total english, therefore i think DOPOD is a better option now for those who don't want the black one.

Congrats your ur Dopod wu.
I'm glad you're having no issues with it so far. I'll be getting the Ameo despite its supposed shortcomings + insurance!! So what the hey?!?!
Agreed, HTC are new to ROM building, but they do now own Dopod, so I very much doubt that their ROM will lag behind Dopods especially if Dopod have to help them perfect the HTC ROM.
Who cares anyway? Soon enough we will have access to the most stable and fastest ROM and all versions of the X7500 will run exactly the same, as the hardware is the same.
My only concern now is the stablility of the HDD.
yes, Dopod is very better than Ameo and advantage
but problem is color it is silver
can paint it and change color to black or change the case?
I change my 7710 from silver to black with changing case
can it do with athena?

Arya...no disrespect intended, but what are you getting the X7500 for? It just seems that you are comparing so many devices with it, to the point of sounding confused. No device is perfect, nor will Man be able to make one.
You simply have to decide on which device meets your requirements according to market availability. For me it's the Ameo. Other devices due out soon have some specs that equal or better the Ameo in certain areas, but fall short in other areas.
Ameo all the way and if I encounter any of the problems I have been informed of, it will be insured and still under guarantee, so I won't worry unnecessarily.
So my advice to you would be to not think X7500 first, but what are my needs? Then decide on which device best suits you.

That is very well say, agree with you there. Let's see if HTC can come up with a stable ROM (with the help from DOPOD). Hopefully they make their ROM right so they don't damage the HDD. After Advantage is out, we can then compare all the ROM and choose the best one and install.

This is funny, I already own the T-Mobile Ameo for almost two weeks now, even before you posted this.
1. the battery life is pretty impressive for such a device, you can get through a working day with a couple of phone calls and internet surfing/playing around with the unit and the battery still shows 30% power left.
For some people this battery life may not be good enough, for me it is OK since I always charge my phone(s) over night anyway.
2. I "smashed" the Ameo several times on my office desk, on my bed, on my office chair, I carried it around all the time, even running with it in my pocket.
No problems at all with the HDD, especially since it uses a sensor which detects "acceleration"(drops, movements, etc.), so I highly doubt that there would be trouble, even if it isn't mounted properly.
Of course there will be an updated Ameo/X7500 by the end of this year, HTC puts out a lot of new units on the market, I would be surprised if they didn't.
I highly doubt that HTC would "allow" T-Mobile to acquire and sell defective Ameos, T-Mobile could easily make them responsible for defective units and this could cost HTC a lot of money.
I don't say this isn't true but I know how rumours and gossip is travelling the internet and although sometimes there is some truth behind all this talk, I would take it with a grain of salt.

Man, it's not GOSSIP, i was one of the tester for HTC Advantage, i have been notify by HTC that the Rom has serious Bug on HDD handle. I also have contact of one of the most senior engineer in HTC. It has been confirm Advantage is being push back, just don't know how late it will be. If lucky, with the help of DOPOD, they might still get it out on time.
We all know there is no hardware difference, it's the ROM which makes the Advantage being push back........
p.s. mackaby007, you should change the post title, it's making some people confuse.

As nicely as you try to put it P996, what you say implies that either I, or whoever my source is are either foolish in speaking of these things or blatantly lying. It certainly is not gossip, as I have not heard this anywhere else. The fact that you nor anyone else that has bought it and yet hasn't experienced this problem, does not detract that some testers have come to be aware of this design/assembly flaw in the Athena that COULD cause the problems mentioned in my earlier thread and talks had taken place with T-Mobile UK with regards to returning the units (possible recalls for Germany & Netherlands). The fact that this will not be taking place can be attributed to certain facts; i.e.
1) Too much has already been invested in a product that is not guaranteed to go wrong.
2)The Athena is NOT faulty, it' implementation of the HDD unit is subject to vulnerability due to the way it was stripped down and mounted in the overall casing. NOT faulty.....hence NO Recall...Get IT P996??
3) Furthermore I sincerely doubt that you are truthful in your account of how many times or the extent to which you have knocked your brand new device about. Yes I'm implying that you are lying by exaggerating, to prove a point.
4) I'm still getting the Ameo despite the only vulnerability reported to me.
5) I was merely sharing pertinent information to anyone who like me wants to make well informed decisions about future expensive purchases...whether we like the negatives or not.
6) As stated before...(for those too lazy to read through all the Athena posts there aren't that many at present)...T-Mobile UK have not yet released the Ameo and the tester/testers in question are from the UK and extremely well qualified and known to me personally, so I trust what they tell me, but not without question.
7) The point wu raised about HTC's ROM damaging the HDD is a totally separate issue, but confirms that HTC are well aware of problems with their HDD, be it soft or hardware related.
Lastly it is very easy to look at the past posts of every member..therefore if you suspect a persons integrity, you should at least have the decency to check them out before implying that another member is a gossip-monger. Wanker!!

nicely say mackaby007, agree with you there.
Since i haven't tested the T-mobile Amoe, i don't know anything about it.
The HDD issue HTC Advantage is having is a software problem, to do with how their ROM handle the Micro Drive. So don't worry, when it comes out, it should have no problem, that's what they are working on now.

Thanks Wu. I agree with you completely and I've changed the title of the thread as you advised.
Previously my HD2 run on windows but it was hang when it getting warm.
so I send it to my retailer and they told me the run android for me.
They also told me that it wont be stable to run windows ????
I dont like android and am clueless about it.
the phone is still at the shop, i'm planning to go this weekend.
So while there, what should I do to test it?
Try connecting mobile Data and Wifi if they have it. Some builds hang or go into a bootloop when you use them.
Try the camera and see if it force closes. some old builds did that for me. DON'T TEST 720p video recording.
that's all I have in mind atm

What kind of retailer is this proposing you use a phone which was officially published as a windows mobile 6.5 device to run on android?
Normaly everybody running android will flash stock winmo before returning it to the retailer for any warranty issues, this way around seems very strange, very strange indeed.
If you still have warranty, which i presume, i would insist they repair or exchange your device and give you an hd2 which can do what it´s supposed to, and that is to run windows mobile 6.5.
And if every you should plan to run android on your hd2, take a look at my signature, i for one wouldn´t accept my retailer flashing whatever android on my phone for an excuse in failing to repair my device properly.

Ok, that´s a different story then.
But i honestly think an HD2 which can´t run windows mobile anymore due to some hardware fault cannot run stable and reliable android (which way ever it is installed).

I concur with cheech. HD2 is a WM phone and WM should work on it. Besides, at least on my device, Android produces higher temperatures than WM.
If yours freezes on overheating, chances are it's one of two most popular causes: bent battery pins (check and try to delicately strengthen them if so), or defective aminboard (requires replacement). Check this post for more details and references (sorry too lazy to write it all over again)
Sorry guys but, I have a very strange question (which may probably sounds dumb to many, but pls. bear with me being a noob...)...
I have an 1 Year old HTC HD2, works wonderfully well with custom ROM's of Android (thanks to all the developers) but, recently, the same have got a frozen touch panel...now, till date, I've replaced/flashed 10-15 ROMS in the same - within a span of 4-6 months but, its screen just died and stop responding after flashing my last ROM....
I am (vaguely) thinking that could it be due to Android OS for which my HTC HD2 is not made for? However, I am a strong believer that no software can damage hardware but, still need a second opinion.....kindly advice...
Rgds.

Dear mponte....have done that already...but no luck.
Have got the touch replaced from authorised HTC dealer as well...costed Rs.5700/- (around $128).....
All i wanted to confirm is can an Android ROM cause this?
Nah Android didn't cause it, if you were running WM it would've happened too. Touchscreen failure is somewhat common with the HD2 regardless of OS. $128 seems like a tough deal for a repair to me, I was looking on ebay for a replacement for my busted HD2, and there were TMOUS HD2's for $150. I'm going through HD2 withdrawal, I'm so sick of this slide phone
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide
Thank you for the clarification huggs....in my part of the world, getting a replacement for $ 128 is OK as handset does not comes bundled-up with connection/plan (a new handset along can cost around 600-650 USD)....
few days ago i've had a discussion with an HTC Global Operations Manager from Taiwan,
and i've asked him about HTC Policy regarding unlocking the bootloader.
when you go to the unlocking page, HTC Clearly states: "It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty."
seems good, isn't it? in case of hardware failure, we could use that warranty.. well.. actually.. we cannot.
Terms of use which you must agree to in order to use that service, states otherwise.
"HTC WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OF ANY KIND ARISING FROM THE USE OF THE SERVICE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, AND CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES."
you can find it @ http://www.htcdev.com/terms under "Disclaimer".
the meaning of all of this is.. when you unlock your device, you void your warranty for the device, and it doesn't matter if it was just to gain root access or whatever.
from HTC point of view, they're not liable for anything related to the device as long thats concerns them.
and seriously? thats about the time to do something about it.
im an average user, bootloader unlocking for me would be done just to gain root access so i'll be able to backup my stuff.
seems like HTC ticket out of their financial crisis was the HTC One..
as for me, im gonna wait for Samsung to release their Galaxy S4.. if it won't have their amoled screens and their "pentile matrix"
im gonna go for it
p.s.
one of the questions that was asked during that discussion was why not to let the users s-off after unlocking.. anyway.. we gave up our warranty so.. what does it matter?
we couldn't get a straight answer about it.. all we could get was something that has to do with "security risk being protected" & "protecting the code"
I have heard the complete opposite and I myself have sent a phone away twice before with an unlocked bootloader and its fine. Also samsung have protection against people flashing non samsung approved stuff. Their bootloader has the counter. Good luck with the none pentile AMOLED, I imagine it will be pentile the note device usually has the non pentile display.
HTC is refering to not being held accountable as a company. Ie. you cant sue them.
That has nothing to do with warranty.
Could be mistaken of course, feel free to correct.

Their bootloader has the counter, indeed.
but its S-OFF. you don't have to go through a process to perform UNLOCKING OF ANYKIND and, you can reset that counter.
means, you can use your warranty.
with htc, you cant even temp root!

Warranty is a contract, therefor, it has everything to do with it.

Most if not all Qualcomm HTC devices have had S-off obtained. It was just the Tegra devices that didn't.
obtained, not issued.
thats the HUGE difference.
Companies won't openly support rooting because it gives the user access to mess with SW & HW that could easily render the device useless, but if HW fails, there's a good chance they won't be able to tell if you rooted or not, where SW failure can be addressed by community help. Even upon touchscreen failure it is possible to unroot via physical buttons (at least on some devices) so the chances of catching a non user caused issue under warranty after which you can't unroot but leaving evidence for the HTC repair team to easily spot your wrongdoing is minimal.

The fact that to get back to stock on samsung you have to obtain a way of getting rid of your flash counter which samsung is trying to make harder in getting rid of. So in terms of warranty they arent really different at all.

few days ago i've had a discussion with an HTC Global Operations Manager from Taiwan,
and i've asked him about HTC Policy regarding unlocking the bootloader.
when you go to the unlocking page, HTC Clearly states: "It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty."
seems good, isn't it? in case of hardware failure, we could use that warranty.. well.. actually..

They cant get out of warranty for the phone if it is an inherent fault. They would have to prove that you had caused it by unlocking the bootloader and modifying the software, ie over-clocking and burning the cpu out. Why would they fix anybody's that sent it back unlocked if they didn't have to?

I have say htc to be very good even when rooted etc. all my devices have been repaired, within warranty picked up from home address and delivered.
Not sure about Samsung but they are making it more difficult to reset flash counter.

Hi I am getting HTC 1st time so I dont know much about their system, can you tell me how are their repairability in case it bricked or its rooted and you need to give it to service centre? how hard or easy to root, theme or custom rom on HTC devices compared to S3? and I like sense 4 style home screen and animated weather on home screen, it it possible to get exact that look and feel on HTC one? what is the procedure to in-warranty repair and how much time they sake generally?
Thanks

I've never sent my device in when it's been bricked due to rooting or flashing custom rom so I can't really tell you.
how hard or easy to root, theme or custom rom on HTC devices compared to S3?
Requires bit more work to be honest. You have to unlock boot loader firstly But it is straight forward.
and I like sense 4 style home screen and animated weather on home screen, it it possible to get exact that look and feel on HTC one?
Of course it is just requires widgets.
what is the procedure to in-warranty repair and how much time they sake generally?
Generally in my experience within 7 days, provided all parts are available etc. very good service pickup and drop off wherever you are in the country.
Thanks

I can't understand why people are surprised that companies will void warranty upon unlocking the bootloader? A user (even experienced) can cause damage to hardware, even sometimes on purpose, to get a warranty claim.
If you damage a part in your desktop/laptop PC (due to overclocking, etc), you are liable for that part, so how is this any different?
Its irrespective if its HTC or Samsung or Sony or whatever, they must protect themselves otherwise they won't be around for much longer.

You misunderstand. HTCs "official" stance is:
It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
The disclaimer you highlight is them saying: If your phone blows up and hurts you due to bootloader, we cannot be held accountable. That statement has nothing to do with warranty as per my understanding.
If your phone is damaged due to hardware (not related to bootloader) then they will fix it. However, anything effected by Bootloader unlock (even indirect) will not be covered.
I believe you are simply misinterpreting their language (possible if English isn't your native language).

Thats the thing.. I'm not and wasn't interpreting.
like i said, i have spoken to an HTC Global Operations Manager from Taiwan. HE DID those interpretations.
from what HE said, you unlock your bootloader = you void your warranty and thats it.
i know its hard for people to understand that but that what he said.
i thought the same like you did, if i only rooted it.. didn't change anything in the device and my battery suddenly has gone kaput? NO WARRANTY.
because thats the meaning of their policy.
this has been told by an HTC Senior Official.
I had my Desire's motherboard replaced and I had disassembled the whole device once. The "void" stickers on screws were in pieces and it was S-OFF. It had this faulty PVT1 motherboard which had problems with CPU solderings.
No questions asked.
Well of course an official would say that. What else would you expect? An official is probably the worst person to ask that kind of contentious question. The way I read the warranty is that if you've unlocked your bootloader HTC might repair, at their discretion. It would depend on the problem. You can hardly blame them...

From my experience, HTC Has repaired non software issues previously. Believe what you would like, but I'll say it once again, the reps interpretation isn't the companies interpretation.
If I'm not mistaken, HTC has gone on record to say it would repair non software issues (too lazy to look it up atm). Some countries, in fact, require it by law.
EDIT:
Think of it this way:
My Car is a new car under warranty. I put an aftermarket exhaust on it.
Lets say a year later (car is still under warranty) the engine breaks. They will repair anything NOT related to the exhaust. So, not the exhaust system, but the engine, body, etc. are covered.
The word "damages" has a very specific meaning in law. That paragraph is a general disclaimer about use of the unlocking service, and has nothing to do with the warranty.
More importantly, consumer protection law often states that the retailer is responsible, not the manufacturer, and it is impossible to sign away your statutory rights.
Hello there,
I recently bought sgs4, because it was cheap from my carrier, but unfortunately it was i9515 version - almost completely without community support and locked (knox, flashing anything unofficial trips it's flag and loses you warranty). It's not realistic to expect custom roms etc, so I'm considering selling it and buying this device.
It seemed great, when I compared specs, I also read few threads and those about recovering from hard brick were very promising. Also many roms are present, a way To Flash original firmware and repair under warranty etc. etc. But I stumbled upon a thread about screen and it was really disturbing.
How often do people experience problems with screen? (Phantom touches, "noisy"input, black lines)?
Also, are there any other problems, that I overlooked and missed? Like that roms are nonfuntional, gps/cell radio/wifi radio doesn't work always. Would you consider this phone worth buying and selling relatively "safe" (I mean working hardware) s4?
Thanks for your replies.

Hi!
So, for me, of course this phone is "safe": of course you can read trough forum that there is issues, sometimes, when you flash some ROMs or stuff like this.
But you have to know 1 thing; usage you made of your phone influences on his state: if you want to use it at daily phone, without custom ROM, in stock mode, is very safe.
If you want to flash custom ROM (click on the link in my signature, best ROM ever) but you respect installation rules, there is MINOR chances for you to have issue(s).
Even if it's the case, majority of time there is solution.
Do I answer to your question?

Hello, thanks for your post, but it didn't really answer my concerns. I'm more worried about hardware defects, which seem to happen to this phone and I want to know how many devices are affected and what is the chance that I'll have to repair it under warranty.
I can say that the biggest problem WAS the screen getting yellow spot. I've never heard about phantom touches. However it is possible. So about the yellow spot it was happening on the old devices, then it was fixed. There are a lot of brick scenarios, but most of them are easly fixable. Anyway i think it's more brickable than samsung. (I consider them as the easiest devices for unbrick) Then it's the performance. It's faster in any way. And last my friend have exatcly the same phone and after a bit of use it gets realyyyyyyy hot. I mean compared to G2 it's awful. It's still a great phone even that G4 was just released. I hope i helped and you buy the phone.
When I first got this phone it was relatively safe. However, I lost my first G2 and I ended up with this Asurion replacement and it was okay too but now I'm experiencing Phantom touches I'm not sure from what it could be: butt pocket, wallet case, tight shirt pocket, actually hitting the Snooze part of the screen too much. You see my point anyone of those things could be the culprit. I love this phone and I would love to keep it but as of right now I can't rely on it to wake me up.

When did you receive the replacement phone? All replacements do come with a 1 year limited warranty!
