Ok I get as far as the gold card part where it says put the sappimg.zip to memcard, but when i load up bootloader it doesnt pick it up? It says a whole bunch of things, i am asking is a card reader req? I used my G1 as the card reader. And it didnt say format? also im using 1Gig Kingston SD could that be the issue? does it have to be 2gigs?
Nvm, I figured it out! The video i was watching didn't say anything about formatting it to FAT32 that was my prob.
I also want to add that I used the adb shell command to get the cid #. I tried terminal and it gave me a different number then adb. I was getting pissed because I know how to make a gold card and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. It was just an incorrect cid.
adb shell
cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

I used the root method at unlockr.com, and i have #root# access in the terminal emu app. When i get to the part at unlockr about flashing recovery, (thru terminal emulator) i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso
I have RUU'd the phone at least 5 times... I have also tried using the cmd using the guide here, and get an error at basically the same spot.
my hero is 1.56.651.2. i have spent over 15 hours across 2 days searching forums and trying different methods, but i guess i must be doing something wrong.
btw.. the very first time i tried using the method from unlockr (root through cmd, flash recovery through terminal emu) it *almost* worked. It tried and got a ton of messages and an error regarding too little memory. after i looked it up and realized i could have just freed up memory in the PHONE(not sdcard) it was too late, i had already RUU'd again. It hasnt come close to flashing since, only the error reading message.
i get an error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.iso

this isn't your issue is it?

do a RUU to go back to bone stock, same version you have
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=608434
follow this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
EDIT: and when it get to this part about "flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img" give it an extra min after you hit enter and it "looks" like it's done before proceeding
let me know if you get stuck, i'll keep an eye on this thread also let me know at exactly which step "looks weird"
oops that was just a typo. I have been using .img for the file ext like you are supposed to. I have formatted the sd before trying, and the same error. The guide you pointed me to also did not work, I always get a flash error at (step 18). I have RUU'd at least 5 times to start over, and it didnt help any.
and about giving it an extra minute after the flash command, it instantly tells me
"error reading /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img"
so i cant really do that.
What should i do
I have ran into that same issue. I would guess you have upgraded the stock sd card. If you have, it is formated to fat32 not fat like the original. Try formating the card fat then try again. Good luck to you.
Dave
EDIT: I see you have formated the card. I believe the card has to be fat not fat 32 (someone correct me if im wrong). When I was rooting my phone I had same error til I formated it fat. May the force be with you.
What do you mean by upgraded the sd card? I didnt ever do that...at least not on purpose. So how would i check the format?
Put the card into a card reader in a pc, right click on drive and hit properties.
crap, i dont have a reader for this type of card. no way to do it through the phone?
and this problem couldnt be from anything else, could it?

you can mount the card from the notifications bar when you plug your phone in usb. then just right click on the removable disk in my computer (mine's drive H: ) then click "properties"
it will bring up this window
if it says FAT32 then there's the (assumed) problem.
Okay!
it IS fat32.

do you know how to format?
before you format be sure to save anything you have on your sd card that you want/need as it will erase everything.
1. move anything you like to save to your computer from your sd card
2. right click on the removable disk in my computer
3. click on "format"
4. in the little window that pops up chose "FAT" leave everything else alone
5. click start.
6. thats it!
damn its not working.
As soon as i click format it unmounts...any idea?
BTW thanks for the help

i've never tried it that way, but you will probably have to go the card reader option, or use...
GParted
windows disk management
but those tools give you the power to seriously mess up your computer. so i recommend running these on someone's computer you don't like.
or the card reader option
You can format the card under "SDCard and Phone storage"
Just unmount then format.
Okay well modchipper said he had the same problem, and the sd has to be formatted to FAT,not Fat32.
Gparted and the other tool, how can they mess up my computer?
The format option in the phone formats to FAT32...
If you're not careful you can accidentally nuke your hard drive, instead of your sdcard.
Well i tried windows disk management and it didnt see the drive. Gives me a feeling that gparted wont work either. does anyone know for fact that sdcard format has to be FAT?
Well once again I'm at my mom's, and her USB ports are screwed up, so I couldn't tel you what mine is formatted as.
Well i have multiple SDCards, but the one that is currently in my phone is formatted in FAT32 & I believe that was the one I used to root & flash the recovery originally...
Well this just seems impossible it seems ive hit a wall...
Im trying to use Fresh pre kitchen, but that wont work either because i have windows 7.
The Fresh Pre-kitchen works fine on Win7.
HI, I am trying to root a Mytouch 3G that has a perfect SPL so I need to create a gold card for it.
Problem is when I try to get the cards CID i get an error:
cat/sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid: not found
I know for sure the card is formatted FAT32 and I have tried with 3 different cards, one of them is the same card I used to root another Mytouch and it worked before but it doesn't work now.
Even tried a different phone and get the same errors. Any ideas what the problem could be?
Are you using the adb shell or are you using the terminal app?
I typically use adb shell (and yes the device is connected) but I did try the terminal app as well and got the same error.

you need a space between cat and /sys
cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
not
cat/sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

Also, make sure you format the sd card in your phone.
Okay, my Magic has been resurrected from boot loop. Problem is, it will no longer recognize any SD cards. I've tried 4 different cards (3 different brands) and none work.
I'm told that I need to root the phone and load recovery, etc using the gold card method.
Now, I can tell you that Hboot does detect the SD card, as it sees SAPPIMG.ZIP if I put it on there. However, since I can't get my card's CID number because the phone won't detect the card, how can I create a gold card to get through this?
Please help, thanks
1. Wipe all phone, without memory card inside.
2. Use small capacity card and no SDHC type, for exp. 128-512MB.
3. Try to use fastboot mode by ADB, maybe PC cans read CID from card through your phone.

1. I've tried this, no luck
2. I'll have to dig around to try and find one of these. Going to be hard to find.
3. I've tried with my existing cards (smallest is 1GB. Nothing.
Thanks, I'll give #2 a try if I can find one.
And remember to format it by FAT32 !

Yup, I've done that.
The problem isn't with the cards, it's with the phone. These cards worked in the phone in the past.
You got a friend with an Android based phone? If so you can use that one to create the goldcard for your phone.

A couple of my coworkers do. I'll give it a shot in the office on Monday.
Thanks.
Problem solved!
All I had to do to get access to my SD card again was run this command in fastboot:
"fastboot oem enableqxdm 0"
I'm back up and running, woohoo!!!
Hi all, I have Magic 32B (vodafone) and am following this rooting guide.
I got the "Incorrect Model ID" error, so made a goldcard using this guide, the 1st two sd cards i tried were not kingston ones so i wasnt that surprised when the pc said they needed formatting. Earlier i bought a 2gb kingston one and went through the process again, but the same thing happened, i tried again just incase i made a silly mistake but no joy
I followed the guide to the letter im pretty sure, what can i be doing wrong?
Any help very much appreciated.
Are you getting the new CID for each card when your swapping them out? Your apparently messing something up or it would be working.
I am yeah, i just tried a 4th time, the numbers i get (the kingston cards cid, reverse cid are the same each time so it cant be a typo etc.
I replace the 1st 2 chars with 0's to get the goldcard.img, format the kingston (using win7 format, fat32) then rewrite the *000 to *170 on the formatted card, and it wont read it.
Am i formatting it wrong?
Has that program to get the reverse cid changed at all? its called psas now.
Has anything changed about the .img's they email for free? does something else need to be done to it?
Are all kingston cards compatible?
I used a SanDisk when I made mine. Are you sure that your overwritimg the correct lines in HexEditor for the SD card? I ran into that problem ehen I made mine.

Is that correct?
If you are running ubuntu you can do this:
1) if you already have the CID, use these sites (h ttp://hexrev.soaa.me/ and h ttp://psas.revskills.de/?q=goldcard) to generate the goldcard image
2) insert the SD card into your ubuntu box and run "dmesg" to know were it is attached (something like /dev/sdb1)
3) unmount the SD card using "sudo umount /dev/sdb1" (replace sdb1 by the device you have identified in 2)). It is a good way to be sure that the device you have identified is the good one
4) send the goldcard.img to the SD card using "sudo dd bs=512 if=goldcard.img of=/dev/sdb" (launch it from the place were the goldcard.img is stored, no number here... just sdb)
That's it... you have your goldcard.
As you can see it is very easy... just 2 command line (no hex editor or so on)
To verify just unplug and replug it...
I hope it will help.
O-p
What if youre not running ubuntu?
I ended up rooting using the SuperOneClick method and im happily running ginger yoshi now
Slightly off-topic but 10 posts to be able to post in the forum of the rom you use seems a bit excessive,
I'm trying to root my NST 1.1.2 with the latest touchnooter (touchnooter-2-1-31.img)
I am on a mac and I know how to use the terminal with dd to write the image to the microsd card. However everytime I try to boot my NST with the microsd it just goes to the regular B&N boot screen like normal. Then when it's all loaded it tells me the SD card is damaged and I need to format it.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried searching around but can't seem to find anything similar.

Read SD (using dd on mac) and compare with original (touchnooter-2-1-31.img)
If it’s the same – try another SD card.
How are you using dd? Are you writing directly to the card, or to the first partition of the card?
I figured out that the card was /dev/disk1s1 by using "df"
Then I run "diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1s1"
Then I run "sudo dd if=nooter.img of=/dev/disk1s1"
After that I get some numbers telling me the ins and outs. If I pull the card out and put it back into my mac it says it can't read it at all, is that bad?
I think you have to write it to /dev/disk1 , but I'm not sure, I never worked with a Mac.
In Linux the card would be sdx, and if there is a partition on it it would be sdx1. But it is necessary to write directly to the card and not to the first partition.

Although I have Win XP I had this problem when doing 2 mistakes :
1. I didn't format the SD card before placing the nooters/CWM on the card. I use "SDformatter" for that.
2. The second mistake was not reading properly what was written in the message after formatting = SAFELY REMOVE THE DEVICE. I didn't remove it & I was burning the image straight on the formatted SD card, so that didn't help either.
But after formatting SD card, removing it and then burning the image, I never had that problem again.
