can someone please help me to get sprite back up v3 to work on my xda2. my aim is to backup my device to my PC. it either freezez my xda2 or hard resets it!!!
thanks a lot
Only after I bought Sprite 3.0 I found out it doesn't work properly. In my case, V3.0 erased my SMS after a restore! Solution? According to Sprite SOftware, they working on it. In the meantime, this is what I did:
For the first Backup
- Make an executable (.exe) backup file and save it to Storage (permanent storage on your XDAII). It will be a slightly bigger file
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail option and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Prgogram Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup. You need to do the executable file only once
For daily backups, save them to a storage card.
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail opetion and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Program Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup.
To Restore
- Run the executable backup file first
- Then do a soft reset
- Run Sprite and restore form your last daily backup file
It anly sound akward, but it worked for me!
PS: You will loose your e-mail account settings and all its folders' contents. But I found that I could live with this. It's better than having to reinstall all software to your XDAII again!
..like walking on thin ice!
hey michael..thanks for the details.. but sprite backup seems to hate xda2..
is there a way to back up to pc with this workaround? can i use the same approach but pc as the destination?
any news when sprite will release the new version?
anyone knows of another backup sw that backs up xda2 to PC?
thanks
Hawk
I hate to be arguementative - but I am using Sprite Pocket Backup v.3 with my imate and it is working perfectly. It even restores my SMS!
Are you sure you are not using ver. 2.X which did have the SMS restore problem?
I've tried with my xdaII , the sms inbox was restored OK, but I have some problem after the backup restored. I never received SMS anymore.
don't know why....
so I never used it again.
i'm using imate with rom 1.72 and sprite backup v3
Hey Brian
Can u please give details about yr device, e.g rom etc. and installed applications.. i never got to to work on the imate. please give some details on if u were able to backup to pc?
anybody know of any program that backs up imate to pc?
thanks
Hawk
On my MDA2 SpriteBackup crashes! (automatic backup timed at 23:55 everyday) Looks like some file is in use and Sprite is not able to backitup and the whole backup process is stopped. So on my MDA2 backup has NEVER finished!
I'm using backup in ActiveSync - I have it set to automatic mode - everytime I put my MDA2 into the cradle, it synchronizes with outlook and then does FULL BACKUP.
And I'm sure this kind of backup works well - I restored my MDA many times after hardreset from ActiveSync's backup and everything was always OK.
hawk -
Your second question first - Of course you know that ActiveSync can backup your PPC to your PC (Tools -> Backup/Restore). Also, Sprite Backup ver.3 can backup to your PC as well - it can install a tool in your system tray to run the Sprite Backup PC Service.
I had version 2.X of Sprite Backup and experienced the SMS service failing to receive messages after a restore. With ver. 3.0.0 I have actually restored my imate after an unintentional HR and SMS worked perfectly thereafter.
Now, for my configuration:
imate with ROM Ver. 1.72.00WWE
1GB SD card
VITO Voice Dialer
PHM Registry Editor
MS PocketStreets
m-possible Backgammon
HP Mobile Printing
Zendrui PocketZenPhone
Syntact GameBox
Sprite Software Sprite Backup
Sprite Software Space Detective
Sprite Software PocketMon
Spb Pocket Plus
Mobimate WorldMate Pro
MS Cubicle Chaos
Laridian Pocket Bible (with 10 Bible translations)
Laridian Daily Reader
Illium Software eWallet
Total Commander
Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0
A.Khogo tAgenda
SSnap
IDiff
I also have the drivers for the Stowaway keyboard installed.
It's pretty well loaded!

What version? I'm using spritet 3 v1517 without issue. Email and SMS restore correctly. The only conflict I've found is using GPRS monitor.
I had the same problem with the earlier versions of Sprite Backup too. After restoration, my XDA will have a complete blackout on SMSs. So i have decided not to install it again.
BRosenow, is your Vito Voice Dialer the PE version? I can't seem to get the non-PE version to work tho.

Likewise, I have no problems on my Xda II - mine does an automatic, self extracting backup every morning at 08:45 to my storage card. They always come back completely, sweet as...

Yes, it is Voice Dialer PE v3.0.
Sprite Backup
I'm using it with my XDA II and no problem. I restores everything as it was. Using Sprite Backup V3.0.0 build 1517.
I don't backup to my PC but to a SD card.
Regards,
Mark
whats the reason to backup to a pc using something like Sprite
over just using activesync's pc backup restore option ?
i understand the sd card backup but not why people use it on pc's
If I'm not wrong ActiveSync backup from PC gives problems with restore after a ROM upgrade.
Maybe that's the reason. I agree with you. It has no additional value.
Mark
I use Sprite to backup my imate to my laptop from time-to-time, just in case something were to happen to my SD backup (loose the SD card, backup files become corrupted, etc.). Considering the little time and storage space it takes, what's the harm in having a little insurance?
And I use the Sprite backup to PC because it takes about 2 min. for a full backup . . . can ActiveSync do that?
nah
with ms you get what you pay for since activesync is free is slow can be
a full backup prob take about 15->30min
i prefer to use the same program 1. to backup to sd card & pc for compatiblity reasons in order to exchange files if needed, 2. sprite does exe files 3. activesync may not restore to a newer rom properly.
the funny thing is some people are using sprite with no problem, others like me are just going thru hell to make it work.
on sprite's support they mention something about stopping some processes in windows\startup\
tried that too, didn't work.
can anyone diagnose the problem with the inconsistency of the results from one person to the other and definite solution?
Hawk
Maybe the ROM version that differs! Sprite Backup works for me fine. See my ROM version below with my signature.
My startup folder contains:
AFlashman, BTTrayCE, CFlashMan, CheckAutorun, ChgDFLnk, IA_Caller_ID, MMREG, NFlashMan, poutlook, stk, Symantec Antivirus, TFlashMan

Well . . . you need to be VERY selective of which files you restore after a ROM upgrade anyway. You cannot do a full restore (from a full backup) after a ROM upgrade, because .exe and .dll files (and others) will be restored, replacing the newer versions. This leaves the device in a state that is somewhere between the two ROM versions and will cause all sorts of problems.
You should only restore documents, email and personal databases - not system data.
I can't seem to figure out how people restore their apps, data, ActiveSync, etc. after updating their ROMs. It seems like people on this site replace their ROMs a few times a year at least, and with all the cleverness required to follow all the ROM issues, surely you can't all be manually re-installing every single app every time, etc. Are there some tools I don't know about that are useful for backing up/restoring files before/after ROM burn? Every backup program I see says you must not use it to restore after ROM update (which I understand, since you don't want to restore old versions of many key files). But surely someone could create a backup/restore app which knows which things should NOT be restored.
Thanks!
I do rom upgrades quite frequently, now I can have my device back with my settings and programs installed in around 10 minutes, here's what I did:
1)Install registry workshop on your desktop computer, this program allows you to remotely browse / export the registry on the PocketPC and compare current regitry settings on PocketPC with a previously dumped registry file.
2) Install RegDiff on your desktop computer, it allows you to generate .reg files out of two exported registry dumps done by registry workshop.
3) Spend a few hours going setting-by-setting and exporting the registry after changing each setting, compare and generate .reg file for that. Keep in mind that sometimes you need to power off the device for a while or soft reset for the registry setting to be permanently stored.
4) Once you have all the .reg files for your settings combine them in a single .reg file
5) Use WinCE Cab Manager to combine the cabs of all the programs you install, set the registry settings, and put shorcuts to all applications into the right places. This is the most "time consuming" part of the process.
Finally I end up with 2 big cab files:
- First one is around 9Mb which I install on pocketpc memory, this includes all today screen plugins, plus Net CF 2.1 and some registry settings (mostly WM5 settings and preferences from the today plugins)
- Second one is around 25Mb which i install on storage card, this includes all the other 3rd party apps I like and registry settings for those apps.
What I do after hard reset or rom upgrade: Install the two cab files, setup mail accounts and mms manually and use directpush to sync all my contacts and calendar items again.
The process of exporting all the registry settings is a PITA, but it is worth spending the time if you're going to switch roms frequently.
Look for an app called Sprite Backup.

Yup, Sprite is the easiest. Be warned, however, that it isn't able to restore PIM databases over the AKU3 upgrade. See my Backup Bible, where I;ve explained this all.
Wow, thanks. That's a lot of work to get things set up! Clearly worth it if you can re-install everything in 10 minutes, though.
I started to investigate your recommendations, installed Cab Manager, and see how you use that.
How do you get the cabs if the install isn't directly via cab? In other words, if the install is initiated via ActiveSync, then are the necessary cabs always found under the Program Files\ActiveSync directory?
As for Sprite Backup, it looks great, and maybe that would be enough for me for now. I wasn't clear (I did search through and skim the Backup Bible and the WM5 backup software comparisons but couldn't find exactly where it talked about the issue regarding AKU3) is the PIM issue a known bug? Or some limitation/problem related to new security or something?

If it's installed via activesync you can find them there, but generally what I do is extract the cab files from the exe using orange in Linux, don't know if there's a windows equivalent.
pof,
Don't know if you ever ActiveSync since you use Linux, but is there a way to NOT break your ActiveSync by upgrading your ROM? I thought I tried once, years ago, to set the device name back to the original name and ActiveSync still didn't recognize it as the old partnership.

If it doesn't recognize it, just delete the old partnership and recreate / reconfigure it . It's just some seconds.
I've been using these small tips on my Kaiser, Diamond and now X1i. As this forum is for sharing I'll share the ones relative to X1i
1. If using TF3D, this path
Computer\X1i\\\Application Data\HTC leads to folder YGO which stores all your Stocks TAB data. Copy it to Storage card before testing/ using new ROM and then copy back after ROM install. Your Stocks tab is re-configured.
2. If using TF3D, the registry entry backup and restore can be used to restore list of cities and weather settings
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\Manila
3. Similarly if you have installed a software with registrtation key and are a frequent ROM tester, then go to this link
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\XXXXX
where XXXXX denotes your software such as Webis (Flexmail), SPB Insight etc etc.
Backup the reg key and restore after fresh install and save headache of reinstalling all keys/ settings
4. Similarly for owner settings also backup and restore following:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Owner
5. For X1i Panels, only SE panels can be configured. Go to
X1i\storage\\Program Files\Panels
and copy folder "SonyEricssonPanel" to your storage card/ computer etc.
Copy back before opening panels after fresh install/ hard reset and your SE panels work with your customized settings as before.
may be the simple settings but I felt like sharing and I did so
Thanks

hmmm I installed the EU Rom upgrade, having removed storage card amd take a copy of PIM.VOL. Upgrade completed, I can see apps on my storage card but my phone can't see them in the list of programmes, so I can't add them to programme font page or start menu... My phone also doesn't seem to see the pim.vol so I can't reload all my contacts (no they weren't all on my pc - I can sync with that fine but not all my contacts were on pc)
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE - I can't be the first - or last - with this..!?
thankyou
Mark
Try TotalCommander to copy the file + backup your contacts with PIMBackup2.8 in future. As for the apps, you need to re-install them, so you can safely delete the apps on the storage card saved under Program Files
Thanks, going through various cab files etc and re-installing, TomTom next! Copying pim.vol hasn't worked, I have some Mob no's on my sim and can see them but bizarrely when I try to add to favourite contacts, all I see are a few email addresses, not the (few) mob no's I have on the phone. Looks like I will have to re-source these , what a chore... I though that copying the pim.vol would save me this task (am sure I read it in these august forums!)
all the best, Mark
ps any other tips on how to fully restore what contacts I have, so I can add them again to favourite contacts, are appreciated.
You may want to look into Sprite Backup. It's very nice for restoring system state after moving to a new rom. After flashing a new rom I have all applications / contacts / emails / texts / etc back on my phone within 10 minutes. I don't have to install anything. It's quite nice, especially with all the flashing and testing I do.
I made all these changes to my Imagio since I received it, i.e. put on SPB Mobile Shell, finger keyboard, adjusted alot of the settings.
How do I back this up and be able to install again exactly how it is now if I need to do so. Is there a particular application that I use. What instructions do I need to do. I like my settings and what I put on the Imagio but dont want to go through the process of doing it all again if I do something to do the phone.
Please advise.
SPB Backup and Sprite Backup come to mind.
with spb back up and in case I have to do a hard reset since the Imagio crashed, can I use this to start up my Imagio again in case it crashes and it will look like exactly how it was before the crash. I would like to be able to click on one button, run the exe file and presto, the Imagio looks like before it crashed.
Yes thats ghow SPB backup works. Just save the backup file on your storage card. After a hard reset, you just run the self executing backup file and it restores everything.
I ran SPB Back up and saved it on the SD Card but which file do you click on because it looks like spb backup created mutliple files since it said it was to big.
Also what happens if you can hard-reset, i.e. you brick your phone. Does SPB Back up not restore the ROM & Radio or am I just confused here.
