Some questions - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I have some questions about my HTC Magic and the Hero ROMs.
1. Which one is the best at the moment (for a 32A Magic)? I'm using JacHeroSki *Super Optimized Rosie* blablabla right now.
2. What the *** is Swap and CompCache?
3. Does anyone know how to install Footprints? It was removed from the ROM I'm using right now.
4. I have like 50 apps or something, is there some way to not have to reïnstall them everytime I use a new ROM?
I'd be very happy if someone could answer these questions.

Does anyone know how to update or upgrade and HTC magic from rogers

Im sort of new to android and dont really know much about these things but I want to upgrade my phone from crappy 1.5 to like Eclair or Sense UI or anything other than 1.5 (I hate it)
P.S.
I had a dream before and I tried to flash a rom and it bricked so is there like a Rom for the magic for rogers that is safe, like for sure?
Thanks

Yes, you can root your phone. Try to include detailed information about your phone so people can give you specific information regarding your phone and even give you some links.
For example, use a signature such as:
Sapphire HTC Magic 32A
RADIO-3.22.20.17
ROM-CyanogenMod 4.2.13
RECOVERY-Amon RA v1.5.2H
THEME-n/a
LOCK SCREEN-default
SD CARD-8GB 512mb:EXT3 / 32mb LinuxSwap / Remainder Fat32
Okay thnx, so can u tell me any roms for the htc magic that are safe
All are safe. How exactly did you brick you're Dream...?
I flashed a htc hero rom and then i couldnt turn it on anymore or go to recovery, but I have another question do I need a special SPL to be able to flash roms or is any fine
Sense Ui for Rogers Magic
Hello Everyone,
Well since you want to know when your Magic will get the sense ui or hasn't gotten it yet is that they still are working on it. Check this link out: http://simflecks.com/?tag=rogers
The post is quite recent and even right now they still are going to release it. Things got delayed to the device problem of 911 not working with gps feature on.
Hmm.. this topic somehow doesn't seem to belong in the "Themes & Wallpapers" forum.
Better go to the General forum, or if you want support for a specific upgrade/rom you can go here and post in the desired update/rom thread.
Now, since you posted your question: if you want SenseUI running on 2.1 you'll have to wait a bit because the source or rom image is not available yet. There are some experimental roms available, but I doubt they are for everyday use (some things are still not working). You can however run vanilla 1.6 if you want a higher and stable Android version, but it won't come with SenseUI. Vanilla Eclair is also an option, but currently not as stable as 1.6 (same reason, no 2.1 source/rom image/drivers made available yet), but they are getting there.
u can have a sense ui running on 1.5, if you are only concerned with how it looks. Just flash the cursorsence rom, if u have 32a phone. ensure u dont have a perfect spl. If you did the rogers dream->magic switch, likely you have a 32a phone with 1.33.0010 perfect spl. you must get rid of this first.
here's some links to help you out as i did this process yesterday. took me a helluva long time.
Goldcard Method
Fix perfected spl using this goldcard
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT RADIO AND SPL!!!!!.
Radio and spl upgrade
Cursorsence
I have a Rogers HTC Magic. I haven't upgraded the SPL or the Radio. I'm currently running "[ROM] [32A] Android 1.6 Super Stable & Super Fast... [FEB 10th] Old Radio" for everyday use and it works great.
If your are really new at this, go to theunlockr dot com. Scroll down a little and you'll see a drop box called "Select a Category" select HTC MyTouch 3G/Magic, scroll down again. You'll see 2 video links for "How To: Root the HTC Magic in One Click!" and "How To: Load a Custom ROM on Your HTC Magic".
Good Luck

You have a really outdated recovery so get the latest Amon_RA recovery for you device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492 (This link is for magics but you can find the device that you need in the first post)
I would recommend MLIGN Hero ROMs, KingKlick Hero ROM, or SenseHero. There is a little thing called searching so please do.
ok so i did some searching and found that using the 'better terminal emulator' is a faster way of flashing the recovery image but i have to pay for it....so is there another way? (by the way sorry for the questions i feel bad making you explain so much)
someonee.?
You can just use terminal emulator (free market download) to flash the recovery, but personally, I just do it through fastboot (if you have an engineering SPL you can too). No you don't need to change your recovery to change roms, but it's good to have the latest version (as of now, Amon Ra's 1.6.2 is the newest, check the link posted by UberMario).
ook so checked out some sites, it showed different ways on how to install MLIGN 3.3 so i just gave up and it was confusing. but i want to try this fast test 3.0 out instead. so i used sapping to put my phone back to 1.5 ( as in no roms or anything ). what should i do in getting fast test 3.0? ive checked some sites but they only show how to do on G1 not on a mytouch 3g. so can anyone give a link(s) on where to go to start out?
i tried searching some info but either the instructions werent for a mytouch 3g or the intructions werent clear. ( Most sites would be explaining the whole process in like 3 sentenses, its so dumb)
Go with Super D 1.9.3.
cyanogenmod ..the best balance of speed and stability...
also please please please read up a little more before you start flashing.. dont want to see you back here saying you have a bricked phone..
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page
more specifically see here (under HTC Magic)
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page#Upgrading_from_Vanilla:_Installing_your_first_mod
and since your running a mt3g make sure to follow the directions for 32B
if you cant follow that guide you shouldnt bother with custom roms..
look for "android terminal emulator" in market...it actually allows you to type numbers in the terminal!! (OMG!)
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.jackpal-androidterm-zxnC.aspx
and its free
CM is best
personnaly I found using android SDK the easiest of all since you can modify your phone directly from your computer. instead of typing on that little keyboard of android.

[Q] New ClockworkMod version

Hi,
There is a new version for all Desire Z of the clockworkmod, just go into rom manager and the update will prompt.
New things are the possibility of going back using the back key (this was not possible before and it was done by pressing down power button), and the possibility of partition your sd card. But why would you like to partition it? Is there any ROM that supports A2SD already??
Can someone please explain to me what is the point of installing these custom ROM-s, out of which most have some kind of bug's or disadvantages over the perfectly reliable and fully working stock ROM by HTC?
In my point of view, HTC has a massive team of developers and testers for developing their software, so it has a better chance to be more reliable and bug free than any custom ROM developed by a small team of developers, who by no doubt must be great at what they do (respect for devoting their time to advance mobile software) but by numbers alone they have a lesser edge on thinking through all the possible bugs and errors in their code.
What are the main advantages a custom ROM gives you that makes you want to replace your stock with it and risking losing some of your phones functionality..?
Thanks for any insightful answers
If you pick the right rom you will have no bugs at all, and a faster more smooth version of the stock rom.
That is all I will say. You need to try them for yourself to really know what its like, but once you do you will never want to go stock again.
I agree,... ALL custom ROMs I have ever used for long periods of time have been "snappier" than the stock ROMs. Some have better battery life, some allow further customisation than stock.
As Lenny said, give it a bash, if it is not for you then you can always revert back.

Well, what if there's a bug in the current ROM for a function that you use a lot and you want to switch to something else that doesn't have that bug ?
What if you want to use different programs instead of the ones that HTC has picked and built into the ROM ?
What if you want to overclock your phone for extra performance and want that function built in there without any messing around ?
As for the number of people thing, although it might only be a few people actually cooking the ROM, but remember that a *lot* more could be involved in writing the applications in the ROM.
Not meant to be an exhaustive list, but those are just a few reasons why you might want a custom ROM.
This is my first Android phone, previously I was on WinMo, and there the custom ROMs were always hugely better than the stock ROMs (more stable, faster, better functionality, etc).

Sorry but I am a newbie of DesireZ and on the XDA forum as well. A few things want to know about this new clockworkmod :
1) Where can I download this new version?
2) I have already installed ROM Manager but never flashed any ROM so far, so how to install this new version?
3) Can you recommend a good ROM for DZ? My main concern is that I can change the system font size, and the 4 function key below can work (I know some G2 ROM not compatible with DZ, especially the 4 keys below)
4) I have also already ENG S-Off and rooted. So I just need to save the ROM in SD and flash it with the ROM manager?
I thank in advance!

Go into ROM manager and it will tell you there's a new version of ClockworkMod available. Then you can flash it from the option within ROM Manager (and reboot into recovery if you want to, just to test it).

[Q] default Rom

Hi Guys,
I'm upgrading my Widfire to a desire in a couple of months and Wanted to give the Wildfire to my missus. However I don't want to give it to her with a custom Rom without any choice.
So I wondered if anyone has the default "Orange Rom" I can isntall so she can decide as this would be her first smart phone and I think sense would be easier for her to get on with.
I found this in development section but I can't post a question as I have to have posted 10 posts to be able to do so.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906557
The one you linked is indeed the default Orange ROM, with just the upgraded HBOOT removed. (So that, you retain root, and, your missus can run Custom ROM's when she gets bored of the default Sense interface. )
You can go ahead and flash it without any issues. It'll function just like the Stock ROM.
Thanks alot bud!
Is this still the best placed to get the default ROM ???

Got a HTC Desire HD , someone help(noob questions ..)

Ok, so i had an optimus one, but this is completley different so please help...or point me to some help pages and stuff
I bought an HTC DESIRE HD , as i notice is rooted, it has RCMixHD 6.0.0.1(android 2.3.3 Sense 2.1) ,
kernel V2.6.35.10 - [email protected] march 29
So :
What do i need to install a new ROM ?
I read something about some radio vers, what up with that??
And if i find something else to ask, i will write here !
Thanks in advance , sorry for being a noob
reading is fundamental. i researched HTC phones months before i bought one(came from blackberry). after i got my DHD i stumbled across "rooting". so i did months of research before i rooted my phone. i still feel like im a noob because im still learning and finding new things out. my point is...you should do the research and not expect people to feed you the answers you are looking for. im not trying to be a ****. just shedding some enlightenment.

Yep, no one can click a button and make you learn things like that.
Check the how to threads in the subforum "Desire HD Android Development".
Everything you need is there.
Read, read, read.
well i have experience in android , had 3 devices before but htc devices are a little diff . since my device is rooted , just needed some small steps to move around here
OK ! at least please tell me if can safely update RIL ... i have an older vers and how i can install android revolution ROM
THX!

See point number 3 (last lines in the first post), to check if you have ClockWorkMod Recovery installed (you probably have). Do it anyway, to update to new version, if it's the case.
You will flash your roms through ClockWorkMod Recovery.
To reach it, shutdown your phone. Then hold the volume down key and press the ON button (top one). You're in bootloader mode. Choose recovery from the menu, using the volume keys and the On/Off button to confirm.
You will boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery. To install a rom, you would already have downloaded the file in the developer's thread and copy the zip file to the root of the sdcard. Don't mess with the zip.
From the ClockWorkMod Recovery menu, choose install zip from card.
To install radios:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040986&highlight=radio
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597&highlight=radio
thx joooeee !!! so i found out that my phone is ENG s-off ! that is some work not needed to do by me!
About the RIL, you will only need it if the rom has Sense. No Sense roms don't need it.
And you need to match the RIL to the Radio version installed.
ok so despite what you said, i managed to learn some stuff , i updated radio and RIL
and i have the phone for 3 hours
thx jooooe ! you really helped
Nice. You are ready to become a rom flasher addict.
yeaaah ) and the thing is that this phone has a loooooooooooot of roms ) boston and LG optimus one had few ...and those few are buggy
L.E - flashed 1st ROM ) i haaaaaaaa
As stated everything you need to know is already posted in the forums. Calling your self a noob doesn't excuse you not doing your research before opening a new thread. Come on really? No matter the device there are stickies for them all with all the info a new flasher needs to get started.
