Wireless Tethering - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hello folks, I've tried searching for this but couldn't find anything. I apologize if it has been talked about. I have recently rooted my phone and installed the Hero ROM, awesome ROM by the way. Anyways I want connect my laptop with my phone using wireless tethering that comes with the Hero ROM. I am able to connect on both sides but the browser won't go to any pages. Now I did not use my laptop to root my phone, do I need to do something to my laptop for wireless tethering to work? The laptop is running windows vista home edition and my phone is Rogers Magic PVT32A. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You cannot tether using 32A ROM's. You can use Haykuro's method to use a 32B ROM on a 32A device and then tethering will work fine, but in my experience the performance of the 32B ROM's is unacceptable.

I see thanks for the info.

but is there any actual progress with the 32A support for wireless Tether? I am certainly not able to understand the procedure, all I'm asking is if anyone is working on it..

HTC so far has failed to release the kernel for the 32A boards. It is essentially the same as the 32B kernel but able to access the extra ~100mb that we have.
The kernel is licensed under the GPL license so they are actually required to release it, but are being slow about it. Once the kernel is available it will be relatively trivial to recompile with iptables support which will allow us to tether, along with other cool technologies like netfilter and compcache as well.

Any Sprint Hero ROMs with functioning PPTP VPN?

Hey all, I've been trying to figure this out all day.
My work bought my department a Sprint Hero as an 'on call' phone to pass around, and no one realized that the CDMA Hero is still officially stuck on Android 1.5. Which as I'm sure you all know, doesn't include the vpn settings in the OS, and there don't seem to be any apps in the marketplace that do PPTP. We really need to be able to connect to a windows style PPTP VPN server to manage our servers over RDP/VNC, and browse intranet sites.
So far today I've rooted the hero and tried several ROMs, the only one that even had the VPN settings was the AOSP 2.0 ROM, but I can't get the VPN working, and there is no confirmation in that ROM's thread as to whether its VPN works or not. (Yes, I posted the Q there, and I'm waiting to hear back.)
So if anyone can confirm PPTP VPN works on any Hero ROM's, or if anyone knows of an app that'll do it, I'd greatly appreciate ANY pointers...
I'm excited to learn more about android, I've been a WinMo user since ~2000 or so, and an avid XDA user for most of that time (T-Mobile MDA [Wizard], AT&T Tilt [Hermes], and my current personal phone Sprint Touch-Pro [Raphael]).
Thanks again!
B~
Well I guess with the new kernel source dropping it shouldn't be long now...
You need to get to atleast 1.6 to get the ipsec version (cisco type) to work, with the kernel release I hope we can get at least a 1.6 fully functional, bt camera etc.
If you have to get vpn now check the rom links there is a partially functional 1.6 and 2 out there. Me Im waiting, I use the Bluetooth and camera more then i would vpn. (for now I put a machine on the network with VNC and vnc into it to get to the network.)
Yeah I tried all of the 1.6/2.0/2.1 ROMs that were available as of ~two weeks ago. Only the ASOP 1.6 even had the VPN config menu in the settings, and it didn't seem to work.
It seems like adding the tun module & VPN settings page is a pretty low priority for most of the cooks...
I noticed on one of the ROM's threads that there is a 1.6/2.1 ROM that has the tun module and the cook tested it, but the actual VPN settings page isn't showing up in that ROM
Well, I hear that the GSM Hero is supposed to get the 2.1 upgrade by the end of march, so hopefully the CDMA Hero update won't be far behind that...

MyTouch 3G ROMs - newb question

I just successfully rooted my (non-Fender) MyTouch using the howto at the unlockr website. The whole point of it was so I could use a tethering app like Barnacle, but I am finding that my laptop cannot seem to use the connection it provides, even though it sees it and appears to connect.
Further, my phone is now extremely flaky and is unable to fully sync my Google account (contacts are blank and won't sync at all). It often reboots itself for no apparent reason. I am regretting screwing around with it at this point.
Can anyone recommend a ROM to install that is stable and will give me all the functionality I had before I rooted, plus will work well for Barnacle or another good wifi tethering app? And I still don't see exactly where on this site I go to actually download ROMs.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Do you have a 32a or 32b board? do you have your sd card with 3 partitions Fat/ext2-3-4/swap?
What recovery did you flash? newest Amen ra 1.70?
What radio and SPL do you have.
We have to know these in order to choose a rom. But there are many good ones, just sounds liek you found a crappy one or one not made for your phone
Improved things with latest cyanogen ROM
Ok, so after my first post I managed to flash my phone with the latest cyanogen ROM. Now the flakiness has gone away and I have back all the stability of my former phone, plus actually a couple things I like better than before.
Alas, Barnacle still does not work properly. It starts and runs fine right up until my laptop or iPad actually tries to connect with it, then I get the message that "process stopped unexpectedly".
Thanks for your response. I will try to find the right place to post my tethering problem to see if someone can help me with it.
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general

EasyTether

I was using EasyTether on my dual boot android Tilt phone before getting the Aria. I managed to find an apk but it's for an older version.
I thought I would see if someone can get a later version? as of post time the latest is 0.9.10.
I was able to use the Installing 3rd Party Apps post to load the version I found. So, it will work and doesn't require root access!
Edit: Removed attachment since there is a better way! Thanks guys!
Does it work on the Aria???

If you have Wifi shut down your phone, take out your SIM, turn it back on and connect to the market via Wifi. Easytether will come back along with other AT&T restricted programs. This is what i did in order to get it back on my phone and it works great. Also one of the reasons why im baking it into my personal rom so i always have it.

Please forgive the NOOB, me......but,
I have the Aria on it's way and desperately need to be able to tether. I'm marginally savvy but know nothing about rooting....is it required to tether?
Or can I simply follow the instructions above on an unmodified Aria out of the box, install easytether and have it work?
Works
Confirm, this really works.
Thanks A++++++++++++++++

Just so I'm clear, (cuz I'm frequently not)
When you write "it" works, the "it" in this case is an unmodified Aria, with Easy Tether installed via the no sim/wifi download method described above - correct?
With no other fancy mods, I should be able to tether to my laptop - yes?
(fingers crossed)......

Actually my Aria is in fact rooted running attN1's ROM. Sorry!
Can we maybe get someone with a stock out of the box Aria to give this a try and report back for our friend here!?
I'm sure we can get someone to try this for you. There seem to be plenty of Aria/Liberty users out there now.

Thanks for quick clarification - and no problem. If, in fact, this works, I believe it will be the first (easy) successful tether mod - if I'm not mistaken - and a fairly big development. I've been searching feverishly for an easy solution since placing my order yesterday (confident that it would eventually be cracked). If we don't get a confirmation on whether this works on a vanilla Aria by the time mine arrives, I will gladly give it a try and report back asap.
This place is an amazing resource.

You can get a good nights sleep tonight. I have verified that taking your SIM out and connecting to the Android Market using Wifi will allow you to download EasyTether and install it on a stock Aria. I too had a big need to tether, but I was keeping my Samsung Jack in my computer bag for that very reason.
Now that I have EasyTether loaded on my Aria it works perfectly. I will probably end up buying the full version for $10.00 because I will need https support once the trial runs out.

Tom

Thanks, yea, not a problem - I prefer USB. When I would BT tether with my Pure, it would run @ 2mps, USB brought it up to 10.
I to can confirm it works as well. Stock at&t rom, Vista 64. I also went to cnet's bandwith meter and pulled 395kbps... meh I'll take it.
Now I have my laptop which runs Fedora 11 connected via Easy Tether.
I used the ubuntu drivers from EasyTether's website and converted them to an .rpm using alien to install it on Fedora.
Thanks for posting the how-to's they led me in the right direction.
Look like this is the way to install any software in the marketplace that AT&T does not approve.
Amazin Find. I have wifi 90% of the places I go but this helps everyone else greatly!

I tried the same thing in Fedora 13, but things don't seem to be working. After converting .deb to .rpm and installing it (no errors showing), I tried:
# adb devices
List of devices attached
HT06EHL07448 device

Click to collapse
Device (Evo 4G) is connected.
Then
# /usr/bin/easytether enumerate
HT06EHL07448
Click to collapse
So easytether sees it too.
However,
# /usr/bin/easytether connect
#
Click to collapse
Nada. I tried (in a different window)
# dhclient easythether0
Cannot find device "easythether0"

As stated, I'm connecting to an Evo instead of an Aria. Running Froyo supplied by Sprint/HTC. (Easytether's FAQ claims that it should work on Froyo too.)
Any suggestions?

i used pdanet to tethering with my GF aria the other day. Installation took a few minutes and worked great. The speed is much faster than the stock andriod browser.

HTC Hero to Jailbreak PS3???

I was doing some reading about N900 used to jailbreak PS3. Is it possible for someone to use the released exploit code, and use the Hero (Android OS) to do the same thing? Instead of trying to build the dongle from parts.
Hope I'm making myself clear!
~Google( N900 used to jailbreak PS3 )~
~Google( psgroove )~ <-- exploit
And how do I get link restrictions removed from my account.
Thanks
what are you going on about?
There is a new exploit out for PS3 where it puts the system in debug mode to do all kinds of fancy things. And the only way a while back to enter this mode was to buy a USB dongle that was programmed to unlock this exploit.
But now the code has been release to the public for anyone that wishes to try and build the dongle .... but someone has successfully unlocked the PS3 by using a Nokia N900 instead. So I was wondering if any of those smart developers out there thought about trying that with the Android OS on the HTC hero or any Android OS phone really.

I would hold off on update but I must play MW2! ...sad but true!
you cant port psjailbreak to 3.42 it uses and exploit to launch it into debug mode, with that update sont removed all dev and debug modes in retail units. the hole has been opened and now they can explore all software aspects of it all. the only thing i can recommend is to use the proxy trick to get around and connect to psn without updating

Yeah, you're better off not updating and either finding a friend with a Palm or getting the stick.

Humor me on this proxy trick via PM, would you please?
Here I'll do one better, Logan5 PS3 Proxy Tool can be used to work around the update. You can also use the 67.202.81.137 IP again as your primary and secondary DNS server to bypass the update.
Not sure how long it will last used to do it back in the days of 3.21 but for whatever reason sony is letting use use em again

[Q] Network control on the command line, USB product id's, QOS/SFQ, and de-sprinting

I'm sure this has been answered in at least part somewhere on xda, however I have had little luck finding out what I need. I am looking for information as to how the networking is controlled and run on android, specificlly the sprint version for the HTC EVO. I'm going to gut it as soon as I can, remove sprint hotspot, setup some scripts to do it my way, and get the usb tethering to work again. I'm also looking for details on the RIL. Specificlly where the settings are stored and how it operates. I want to have it so I can at least manually kick the 3g and wimax on at the same time so I can use the 3g for the hotspot when wimax is not available while I'm driving around.
Another question since I'm at this. What is the best way to get at the boot image so I can load in a custom kernel of my own?
Also, is QOS/SFQ not available for android? Has anyone tried to work with qos on android? I want to get it worked out so I can control how the hotspot works in detail.
And how do you switch the usb vendor/product id's from the command line on the phone itself?
On a side note, is there a compiled list of all the changes Sprint made to android?
