I was doing some reading about N900 used to jailbreak PS3. Is it possible for someone to use the released exploit code, and use the Hero (Android OS) to do the same thing? Instead of trying to build the dongle from parts.
Hope I'm making myself clear!
~Google( N900 used to jailbreak PS3 )~

And how do I get link restrictions removed from my account.
Thanks
what are you going on about?
There is a new exploit out for PS3 where it puts the system in debug mode to do all kinds of fancy things. And the only way a while back to enter this mode was to buy a USB dongle that was programmed to unlock this exploit.
But now the code has been release to the public for anyone that wishes to try and build the dongle .... but someone has successfully unlocked the PS3 by using a Nokia N900 instead. So I was wondering if any of those smart developers out there thought about trying that with the Android OS on the HTC hero or any Android OS phone really.

the guys over on the desire forum have got a kernel running in a non sense rom that can do the jailbreak, seems also to work on the n1. Only drawback seems to be u lose alot of usb functionality

Will they be able to port it to the new firmware?
I would hold off on update but I must play MW2! ...sad but true!
you cant port psjailbreak to 3.42 it uses and exploit to launch it into debug mode, with that update sont removed all dev and debug modes in retail units. the hole has been opened and now they can explore all software aspects of it all. the only thing i can recommend is to use the proxy trick to get around and connect to psn without updating

Yeah, you're better off not updating and either finding a friend with a Palm or getting the stick.
Sony is worse than Apple.

Humor me on this proxy trick via PM, would you please?
Here I'll do one better, Logan5 PS3 Proxy Tool can be used to work around the update. You can also use the 67.202.81.137 IP again as your primary and secondary DNS server to bypass the update.
Not sure how long it will last used to do it back in the days of 3.21 but for whatever reason sony is letting use use em again

Hey guys i'm thinking about getting this phone or the tilt. Main reason is i know WM6 supports 802.1x wifi security modes, which my school uses EAP-PEAP. i dont know whether or not the g1 supports it. Does it? i've been googling for a bit and nothing comes up. Thanks in advance.

All I can see is WPA and WPA2 it doesn't let me configure it further. So I am going to guess no... I don't have any EAP or RADIUS routers to check.
But even if it doesn't have it... it can always come out later cause it is just software.
damn how long will it take........honestly i believe they released a half baked product anyway hopefully they'll do it in time before i get my tilt.

You have to remember this product has only been out a week and a half and already they sent out a firmware update. Most other HTC devices don't get updates unless its from WM 6 to 6.1
Google likes to release things that are just bare minimum and use your feedback to build the rest. You will probably see quite a few firmwares being released. Remember this is all to benefit you. While it may be "half baked" to you right now... in the future it will include all the things you need... but not all those things you hated about other OS's
oh they already have firmware updates out? thats cool. Thanks
PEAP and 802.1x
Developers! I wish that i could contribute but i'm not a programmer. I am however leading a group of students on my campus to use the G1 to it's fullest potential. Everything from Gapp's to media sharing. The issue now is that there is no support/options for PEAP authentication on our campus environment. We have some of the best wifi coverage of most campus's i've been to but it defeats the $200 bill of the G1 if i have to rely on the edge network.
Is there any developers I can test configs for? I'll be a tester and can usually report back quickly.
needed configs for campus:
-WPA
-TKIP
-802.1 and PEAP
-AD username and Pswd
Thanks!
Jolopicus
It should work fine if you have root and set up the wifi connection manually with a custom wpa_supplicant.conf, the iptables thread in the development section would be a good start for reading what ya need to do. the default wpa_supplicant.conf on the device has all the settings possible in the comments.
Hi all,
I bumped this topic instead of creating a new one. So i hope this the right way. If i should make a new topic please say so. But this was the closes and only thing i could find about the topic.
Is there any information about getting RADIUS or 802.1x working on the G1. (My campus has this and i like to have internet access on my phone there as i do not have a data abbo).
I read that rooting your phone is a option, but i am not sure what image i should use and how to install it so i hope there is a way to do it on 1.6.
Looking forward to your replays.

I have connection now with a WPA-PEAP network. That one is working but the raduis (8.02.1X) still shows up as web
Tried USB tethering for the first time today and I was pleased with how quickly it set up and worked.
Now, I have HTC sync installed as this is my main PC, but does anyone know the set of driver files needed for Windows to pick up the Hero as a modem?
I'd like to pop them on the SD card to allow me to enable internet access on anyone's PC or laptop without installing full HTC sync.
If you've a default set up, the NDIS drivers can be found in c:\Program Files\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks but it only has the drivers there for Vista x64 (my OS), I really need drivers for XP and Vista x86 too
Odd - when I installed it here on W7 x86, I get both 32-bit and 64-bit driver directories. If you can, I suggest you install on a 32-bit installation to get the driver files.
Regards.
Dave
Hello everyone,
This is one of my first post/reply here, so before anything thank you very much to all here for sharing such good infos.
I've tried to setup my Hero for use as USB Modem as well, but can not find the "HTC Remote NDIS Network Adapter" driver either. Reading on different forums it seems it used to be on the memory card shipped with the device, but I bought mine 4 days ago and the file isn't there now. HTC has probably changed policy regarding this. Can anyone point me to where I could download this file to install on my lapto using Vista.
Thank you very much.
You can download HTC sync direct from HTC's website. It contains all the necessary software and drivers, and is a later version than the one that shipped with the Hero (at least when mine was shipped anyway!).
Regards,
Dave
u got it to work with the default program in htc sync??? i thought it doesnt work..i tried and i got an error
Works fine for me.
Regards,
Dave
do u happen to have sprint service? im getting a username/password issue...i know its not the wrong info because i can get online fine without tethering..... im reading at many other places that sprint doesnt have it working yet??
No, mine is not a Sprint Hero. It is possible that Sprint have disable this option.
You might want to try PDAnet to see if that works with a Sprint Hero (see http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php )
Regards,
Dave
thanks dave..yea pdanet does work, i havnt yet tried it because its a trial version and u have to pay for it...i came from windows mobile where tethering was super easy to do and the apps were plentiful.... but it seems the android market doesnt have tethering ..... i rely on tethering alot for when im traveling, i thougth the android market wouldnt be a problem with tethering apps..but it seems im wrong
The GSM Hero support tethering out of the box - therefore the issue is not Android, but more likely a restriction your carrier has imposed!
First things first though - check to see if you have "Mobile Network Sharing" in Menu->Settings->Wireless Controls.
Regards,
Dave
yes, i have the mobile network sharing... i even install the drivers for tethering fine... im getting a error 67 saying that my usrname and password for my internet is not valid.... although i can go on my internet normally via my phone only...i cannot connect a usb to it from my laptop.... right after i connect it, the internet disconnects from the phone then i get an error.... you are right about sprint blocking it.... but theyve been blocking it since windows mobile...people got around it with a simple app which came with all the hacked roms.... it seems like an issue here with the sprint android.... but maybe its still new?

Yes it is still very new. As with WinMo, you need a hacked ROM, but these aren't available yet for the Sprint Hero as it's only just been released. Once you've got a rooted ROM on your device, you should be able to use wireless wifi tether - the meantime, PDAnet is probably your best bet.

Dave

I was using EasyTether on my dual boot android Tilt phone before getting the Aria. I managed to find an apk but it's for an older version.
I thought I would see if someone can get a later version? as of post time the latest is 0.9.10.
I was able to use the Installing 3rd Party Apps post to load the version I found. So, it will work and doesn't require root access!
Edit: Removed attachment since there is a better way! Thanks guys!

If you have Wifi shut down your phone, take out your SIM, turn it back on and connect to the market via Wifi. Easytether will come back along with other AT&T restricted programs. This is what i did in order to get it back on my phone and it works great. Also one of the reasons why im baking it into my personal rom so i always have it.

Please forgive the NOOB, me......but,
I have the Aria on it's way and desperately need to be able to tether. I'm marginally savvy but know nothing about rooting....is it required to tether?
Or can I simply follow the instructions above on an unmodified Aria out of the box, install easytether and have it work?

Just so I'm clear, (cuz I'm frequently not)
When you write "it" works, the "it" in this case is an unmodified Aria, with Easy Tether installed via the no sim/wifi download method described above - correct?
With no other fancy mods, I should be able to tether to my laptop - yes?

Can we maybe get someone with a stock out of the box Aria to give this a try and report back for our friend here!?
I'm sure we can get someone to try this for you. There seem to be plenty of Aria/Liberty users out there now.

Thanks for quick clarification - and no problem. If, in fact, this works, I believe it will be the first (easy) successful tether mod - if I'm not mistaken - and a fairly big development. I've been searching feverishly for an easy solution since placing my order yesterday (confident that it would eventually be cracked). If we don't get a confirmation on whether this works on a vanilla Aria by the time mine arrives, I will gladly give it a try and report back asap.
This place is an amazing resource.

You can get a good nights sleep tonight. I have verified that taking your SIM out and connecting to the Android Market using Wifi will allow you to download EasyTether and install it on a stock Aria. I too had a big need to tether, but I was keeping my Samsung Jack in my computer bag for that very reason.
Now that I have EasyTether loaded on my Aria it works perfectly. I will probably end up buying the full version for $10.00 because I will need https support once the trial runs out.

Thanks, yea, not a problem - I prefer USB. When I would BT tether with my Pure, it would run @ 2mps, USB brought it up to 10.
I to can confirm it works as well. Stock at&t rom, Vista 64. I also went to cnet's bandwith meter and pulled 395kbps... meh I'll take it.
Now I have my laptop which runs Fedora 11 connected via Easy Tether.
I used the ubuntu drivers from EasyTether's website and converted them to an .rpm using alien to install it on Fedora.

Look like this is the way to install any software in the marketplace that AT&T does not approve.

talking to the mods for how to handle this on the board, we decided to put the same manual here on the board to give support for the people trying to build them.

Anyone tried on DVP?
Yes, I will, and function.
But no interop-unlock, only for homebrew
keep an eye on this.. wait for someone to update...
If I purchase this, will I then be able to use the LED flashlight app that was made? What about Internet sharing?
Without interop you cannot access native comm and therefore no ICS. Flashlight can be done in mango now via API so no unlock is needed.

Just unlocked my DVP via ChevronWP7 and it worked. Spent 30min in queue and it unlock in seconds. Already loaded the battery status app just to try it. Works great.

No Internet sharing for sure. Because the hardware doesn't have the capability.

According to this (pocketnow . com/android/dell-venue-pro-may-never-get-wireless-hotspot-mode) article the dvp has a Broadcom 4325 chip (without wifi hotspot capabilities and wifi 802.11 n support) but in the hardware section of the leaked service manual I read "integrated Broadcom solution of BCM4329 WiFi/Bluetooth/FM SoC" altough in the compatibility tab appears "IEEE 802.11b/g" (no wifi 802.11 n support).
Did anyone disassembled the dvp to see what chip is actually inside?

Finally, my DVP is unlocked (hope so, didn't try to install any homebrew apps yet). This time instead 550 people queed I had only 24. All you need is to login with LiveID (any, not necessarily your main identity), download new version (0.3) of the ChevronLabs Unlock tool, paste your unlock token and press unlock. It took less than 10 minutes to get long awaited message - your phone is unlocked. Thanks Chevron!

The only difference with student unlock is that you can sideolad 10 apps instead of 3. I don't think you can install registry because Chevron unlock means no interop-unlock, wich is a deeper unlock (altough even interop unlocked dvps would need some specific programming to enable SET command in the registry).

I don't know the chip or anything like that but once I was using an app called wifikill on android to kill the wifi on my bros Dvp. And it checked the Company of the wifi module to 'quisda corporation' if that is any help.

That's not true. My phone is "student" unlocked through Dreamspark since Nodo and I can only sideload 3 apps on my DVP, unless I did something wrong.

Student unlock = 3 apps
Chevron/Developer = 10 apps
