I have the PDA2k and I'm having problems alternating between the GPRS connection and the Wi-Fi connection. I will try to explain the problem:
I live in Saudi Arabia and therefore, unfortunately, all connections to the Internet must go through a government proxy server. Each connection has a different proxy server address based on the service provider.
I have set up in my house a wireless Wi-Fi network that connects to the Internet. What I mentioned above entails that the proxy address used for my home connection is different from the proxy address used for my GPRS connection.
For this purpose I had to configure a different connection settings for each connection. I went to Start>>Settings>>Connections>>Connections>>Advanced and clicked on "Select Networks". For my GPRS connection there is a connection settings called "STC_Saudi_Arabia" that has the GPRS proxy address configured. I also entered the proxy address used for my Wi-Fi connection in the "My Workplace" connection settings.
Whenever my phone connects through GPRS it automatically selects the "STC_Saudi_Arabia" for the "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" option. This is congifured by my PDA2k provider.
Nevertheless, whenever I turn on my Wi-Fi the device automatically selects a connection setting called "My ISP". This is very inconvenient because the "My ISP" connection does not have a field to enter any proxy settings.
Thus, whenever I turn on my Wi-Fi (either because I was out of the house and connecting through GPRS or because my deviced turned off automatically and thus turned off the Wi-Fi adapter) I must go into connections and select the "My Workplace" settings rather than the "My ISP" one.
Is there anyway to associate the "My Workplace" connection with the Wi-Fi adapter? Or, can I configure my proxy address in my "My ISP" connection instead?
On another remotely related topic, why must the Wi-Fi adapter turn off whenever the device shuts off? Can't I choose to keep it on even when the device shuts off?
Thank you everybody... I really appreciate the help
You should be able to easily add your proxy settings to the MY ISP Connection.

But see, that's impossible. When I edit the "My ISP" connection I only get the "General" and "Modem" tabs, no tab for proxy servers. I will attempt to attach an image capture of the edit screen for the "My ISP" connection which should depict the lack of a proxy tab.
If you would kindly guide me as to how edit the proxy settings for the "My ISP" connection I would be very grateful
Ok, for some reason the image I uploaded was replaced by some image that I have no idea where it came from. It is definately not a file that I uploaded and absolutely not an image capture of my device. I will attempt to upload the file again and see if this works...
That looks nothing like what I saw on my German ROM, the imate ROM or even the HP 6315 ROM
What did you use for the screen captures, I can capture some shots and see if you can find them on your phone.
I'd still like a link to the screen capture but here is the solution:
Start/settings/connections/WLAN/tools/NetworkCards:
If your not connect to an Access point then you see "My network card connects to:" at the top, use the pull down to select WORK.
If your connected to an Access Point then select the Network adapters tab and then selec WORK from the pull down.
Let me know if this works

I do not understand what you mean by that :? My only guess is that I have caused some confusion by the posting of two images. If that's the case then allow me to explain:
the first image, the one with the "No Bluetooth device was foudn" message, is not a screen capture of mine. I'm guessing that it was attached to my post instead of the image that I uploaded because it had a similar file name to an image uploaded by another user in some other thread.
The screen capture that should depict the fact that I cannot edit any proxy settings on the "My ISP" connection is found in the following message.
Well, now that we've got that out of the way, I tried the solution that you have suggested but to no avail. Whether my selection was "Work" or "Internet" my device would automatically select "My ISP" whenever the Wi-Fi is turned off and turned on again.
Paulmc, I really appreciate that time you're taking to help me out here I owe you one
I'm not sure what to suggest now, Sorry.
Hey, thanks a lot of trying. I really appreciate it...
Is it only I that suffers from this problem? If anyone else connects to the Internet through different proxy servers then I would appreciate some feedback.
Thanks all
Try creating a new connection under MY WORK CONNECTIONS when you go into connections. You can add a modem connection there as well as set up proxy connections..
Then go into the preferred networks and use the my work connections as both internet and work..
I've noticed the same problem on my SX66. It seems that when the wi-fi card turns on, My ISP is always selected (even if the Wi-Fi card says that it's connected to Work which has a proxy server selected). The only way that I've found to work around this is to go to the network settings, make a selection change that will then trigger the proper connection to be selected.
This makes keeping my inbox up to date over Wi-Fi at work completely impossible.
Hi,
I've just got a T-Mobile Vario. It connects fine on GPRS and PIE navigates to web pages.
I then try to connect to a free WiFi hotspot (I have no home wifi network to test on).
It *connects* fine. However, when I try to navigate to a web page it hangs on the "Locate" message, then times out.
I have searched the forum and read similar problems but with home networks not public hotspots- for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=46118
I tried the solutions suggested there but with no luck. Has anyone had similar problems?
I *really* need to get WiFi working (by the end of the weekend hopefully) as thats what I got the device for in the first place.
I am a WiFi virgin so any pointers will help.

Cingular 8125 WiFi fails
I have the same results. My router assigns my device an IP address with WiFi on, but I get the message "...the connection was lost." whenever I try to surf internet. If anyone understands how to set it up, we'd appreciate instruction that works (I'd like a Cingular user if possible) but I would also like to learn what the settings mean. Anyone have a link to network setup information? I have a WiFi network in my home which works for my wife's laptop and my old PDA. This 8125 is bugging me.
working now...
OK, as soon as I posted and went back to the PDA the WiFi connection now works - gremlins again... I didn't change anything or even soft reset - it just connected. I wonder if it was because the GPRS connection ended... I'll try turning off my automatic e-mail checking and post again. BTW, I am using the suggestion of the first Network being "work - no proxy" and the second being "MediaNet - proxy"
Your problem doesn't seem the same as mine.
I have no home network.
My vario, on a public hotspot, always "connects" but always fails on "locate".
you need to make sure the connection is not using a proxy server.
go into settings
connections
then manage existing connections
untick the checkbox on the proxy settings tab that says this connection uses a proxy (or words to that effect)
now you should be able to connect to the network as long as their is no security in place to stop you.
good luck
R
Hi,
I have no "manage existing connections"
under settings->connections.
I go into connections which gives <tasks> and <Advanced> tabs
Under Advanced> I have <select networks>
This screen "Network Management" has two drop downs
1 states "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using"
"T-Mobile Internet" is selected
If I edit and look at proxy settings it has:
"This network connects to the internet" ticked
the proxy server box is empty
If I edit the modem tab it has Cellular Line (GPRS) selected
Dropdown 2 has
Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using:
the dropdown is filled with "My Work Network"
By default the "connects to the internet" box is empty. I have filled this in previously with no luck.
Modem is empty as are all the other entries.
I have swapped the order of the dropdowns, I have made both "My Work network" and both "T-Mobile Internet" with no luck.
I have tried the suggestions on the thread I referenced above - again with no luck.
To repeat I can get the "connection" up. When I select the network it states connection is "good" yet when I try to surf to a page it craps out on the "Locate" message.
Is it failing to find a DNS server on the wifi link?
I'm just guessing as I know v little about WiFi as I have never used it before
TIA for any further contributions
I just wanted to say I have this same problem and have not been able to solve it yet. I can't tell whether to use GPRS while using Internet, or whether I should have the connection set to "Work" or "Internet" or what.
I have tried with 3 unprotected wireless networks already and have gotten the same results with each. I suspect it may be due to DNS. Hopefully it is not the phone itself.
Hi mat,
Well it can't be that you *must* use GPRS whilst surfing - thats what WIFI is for!
I suspect (no real evidence)T-Mobile have somehow crippled the OS to make it difficult to work out how to get free hotspot access working properly. Looking at their site they say CS do not "support" WIFI access problems - how convenient!!!!!
Although I am a WIFI virgin/idiot, I am not a *total* idiot and would have been able to get it working if it was completely straightforward.
To add ammunition to this opinion, I do not have a T-Zone account (I should have but it hasn't been set up correctly). Anyway I tried to connect though a t-zone and it worked straightaway presenting me with the login page. I could also download data - the terms and conditions.
However, obviously I couldn't surf to totally check it out as I couldn't login.
I wish someone would provide a definitive solution as it is really irritating me now!!!!!
Why would it be hanging on "locate"? I imagine it must be because it cannot look up the IP address through the free WIFI link. I made the same suggestion as you did earlier something to do with the DNS setup.
Thats as far as I can get!!!!!
I'm trying to get my Vario II to act as a modem to my laptop using the phone's 3G connection.
I eventually located the "generic modem" driver files to permit the phone to act as a modem to my laptop but I don't know what to do next. I've installed the driver and Windows (XP) reports that the generic modem is installed and working OK.
The downloaded files also included a program called "HTC USB Modem" and when I run this I am asked for a Username and password - and I haven't a clue what I should enter since I don't normally have to enter anything on my phone to access 3G.
Can anyone tell me how to proceed? Or tell me another way to get my phone to act as a modem to my laptop?
Cheers.
Bobby
i have the same problem, have you solve the problem ?

3G access thru PDA
u could try this...
Number: *99#
Username: your 3G access username (some telcos do not use it so leave it blank)
Password: Your 3G access password (some telcos do not use it so leave it blank)
remember to set your access point on your wireless modem before connecting.
cheers.

That last bit threw me Leo. What exactly to you mean by this?
Your network requires you to connect to an access point. If your device came from the network it was already set up to do so. As you need to manually enter the access point (or APN) and any user/password details, you need to google for your networks GPRS Settings.
For example with Orange, their APN = orangeinternet
(with no username or password.)
@bobbyelliot
I notice you are using T-mobile Uk
Their GPRS settings are:
Mode ...................................Permanent
Security ...............................Off
Bearer .................................GPRS
Connection ..........................When Needed
IP Address ..........................149.254.001.010
Port Number ........................9201
Authentication ....................Normal
Access Point Name ..............general.t-mobile.uk
Login ..................................Automatic
User name ..........................user
Password ...........................wap
Web site http://wap.t-mobile.co.uk / or http://www.t-zones.co.uk
Thanks for these details Mike but I still can't configure my Vario II to work as wireless modem to my laptop.
When I create a new Dial-Up Networking connection (I have to do that, right?), it doesn't ask for any of this information (except the ID and password) but does ask for a telephone number - which I haven't a clue about.
Can someone give me an idiot's guide to getting the Vario to work as a (3G) modem to my laptop?
Cheers.
Bobby
type *99# for tel no
user for user name
pass for password
this is what i put for t-mobile uk
Thanks. Tried this. Would only begin to work with GPRS (not 3G). But still failed with GPRS, reporting "Please end data call first." (on my PPC). I messed about with various permutations of start/stop wireless modem etc. but I didn't manage to get a connection. Help!

Before you dial you need to untick the usb connection in the active sync. Otherwise it thinks you want to do that instead. Have you tried that?

Open the comm manager and disable the data option (a little PDA with two arrows) then open the modem and select start. Now when it is plugged into the USB cable the PC will not recognise it as a PDA but as a modem.
Then configure a dial up connection with the options described above and it should connect OK. If not call 150 and they will talk you through it in a couple of minutes.

Bobby,
Let's try and get this working for you. I assume that you are on a T-mobile Web & Walk package and want to use the Vario II as a modem for the laptop to allow a data connection via your T-mobile 3G and GPRS access? If this is so then here goes:
- Configuring WModem on Vario II - Go to Programs and select the WModem option. select Menu - APN Settings. Ensure 'Preset GPRS connections' is ticked and in the APN box enter 'general.t-mobile.uk' then click Done.
- Modem configuring - you seem already to have done this as you have installed the drivers and say it is working - that means you also know how to start the "wireless modem" function on the Vario II in programs.
- Forget about the HTC USB Modem software - just create a new Windows XP 'connection'. I found that this software just added a level of complexity and it meant that you had to enter settings (usernames and password) manually each time.
- Create a Windows Connection on the laptop/PC:
- go to 'show all connections' then click 'create a new connection' (or follow the new connection wizard if this view is what you use).
- Select 'Connect to the Internet', then 'Set up my connection manually' then 'connect using a dial-up modem' then in the ISP Name box that comes next enter something of use like 'Vario II (T-Mob) Connection'
- In phone number enter *99#
- In username enter 'general.t-mobile.uk'
- In the password fields enter 'one2one'
- Consider unticking the bottom 2 options for default and allow all users...
- Save all the settings so far and close the wizard and dismiss the dial-up that appears.
- Change Dial-up Settings - You have created a Vario II dial-up for use by the laptop but you need to ensure that the dial-up uses the Vario II 'HTC USB Modem' and not the built-in laptop/PC modem:- Start WModem - with the Vario docked or USB connected (and activesync running OK) start the WModem (from programs) by selecting Menu - Start. This should stop activesync automatically and then your laptop/PC should see the HTC USB Modem (the Vario II with the WModem running).- On the laptop/PC go into your available connections and right-mouse select properties on the new Vario II connection. In the first (general) tab under 'Connect Using' select/tick the entry for the Vario II modem that should read 'Modem - HTC USB Modem (COM#)' - where COM# is the com port automatically set by the laptop/PC. Check the phone number. Make sure that any other modem is unticked. That should be about it and all should now work! To use the connection just set-up turn off your wireless network or unplug the network cable, then connect the Vario II with the USB lead, then start WModem (the program and menu-start!) on the Vario II, then on the laptop just double-click the connection that you created. Note that the laptop/PC will display the data connection established to the Vario II not your 3G/GPRS connection speed. I changed the settings on my Vario II USB Modem to increase the maximum speed of the connection (to the modem only) to 921600bps and also checked the Hardware features were all ticked.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have a problema and I'd be glad to help more. The connection works seemlessly on my laptop and basic surfing and e-mail is really quite fast - way quicker than a 56k dial-up that we all used to have!
Regards
Tony, you beat me to it!

hi, this is NOT my guide just posted it here cos i cannot remeber the exact link ( it is from universal forum); i did everything according to this steps and all is good been using my hermes as modem since i got it yesterday hehe

access point for t-mob uk : general.t-mobile.uk
user: user
pass: wap
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
You must have from your network provider: the internet access point name, your user name and password.
Download and unzip the attached file in a folder on your desktop
1- Disconnect the device from your desktop
2- On the ActiveSync icon on your desktop, open "Connection Settings". Uncheck "Allow USB Connection".
3- On your device: Go to "Beam" (in Settings/Connections), and uncheck "Receive all Incoming beams".
4- Then in Programs, click on "Wireless Modem". With the Connection type on USB, click on "Start".
5- Now, connect your device to the desktop. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" starts on your desktop. Click "Install from a specific location", then "Don’t search. I will choose…", then click on "Modems", and "Have Disk…" and go to the folder where you unzipped the attached file.
The HTC USB Modem will be shown in the compatible hardware: click to install. Continue if you receive the alert of the software not passing the Windows XP compatibility test (Continue anyway). Finish.
6- Now, in Control Panel of your desktop, open "Phone and Modem Options". Select the "HTC USB Modem" and click on "Properties". In the "Advanced" tab type for "Extra initialization commands":
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”,””,0,0
where xxx is your internet access point.
Click Ok to finish.
7- On your device (always open in the Wireless Modem program), click on Tools/Options. Check the Preset GPRS connections and write in the APN, your network provider internet access point.
8- Finally, on your desktop, go to "Network Connections" and click "Create a new connection". Choose "Connect to the internet", then "Set up my connection manually". Click "Connect using a dial-up modem", then give a name to your ISP. In phone number type *99#. Get username and password from your network provider.
Better keep a shortcut of this connection on your desktop for quick access.
Each time you want to use your device as a modem:
Disconnect your device
Disable ActiveSync from your desktop by unchecking the “Allow USB connection”
Open Wireless Modem on your device and push on Start (with the Connection Type on USB)
Connect your device, then dial from your desktop using the shortcut you created
PS: Remember to enable ActiveSync once you’ve finished.
managed to find the USB driver/file so i attached
sorry was too lazy to reply as I really can't remember the whole wireless modem ****...
moved on to wm6 now, internet sharing is a breeze.
T-Mobile Charges for Vario use as modem
Hi,
I set up the Vario II as described above and it worked fine. What I don't understand is why T-Mobile should charge more (£7 per month extra, or thereabouts) simply because a laptop is included in the system. Surely, provided you don't go over your limit for W&W (1 Gig) then why should they worry?
Am I likely to be charged extra, simply for accessing what I can already access from my Vario ii, but using a laptop as the "front-end"?
Cheers,
Ken

if your using a updated rom you dont have the option of a WModem do you?
I have a SPV M3100 (TyTn, I think) but I cant get it to connect using WiFi to my wireless router. I can go into 'Configure Wireless Networks' and tell it to connect to my router, all the settings are correct, but all it does is try to connect and fail, and no error message comes up.
Does anyone know how I could fix this problem?
Thanks,
Sebastian
it might help if you state what rom your are using and what protection the router is using? I know there are many threads discussing this issue with WM6 using WPA. Have you tried connecting with no encryption? If so can you connect.
Sorry, the ROM version is: 1.23.61.4, date: 7/13/06
It is running WM5 PocketPC. Encryption is WEP. No I havent tried no encryption. I will after when I get home.
Sebastian
OK, I've tried without encryption, and I've fiddled about with the settings but it still doesn't work.
Each time I tell it to connect it says 'Connecting' for about a second then says 'Unavailable' for a few seconds, then back to 'Available', untill I next tell it to connect.
Any suggestions?
thanks,
sebastian
if it use mac filtering the mac of the tytn need to be added to the lists of mac's the router wanna talk to
that's not the problem either, sorry
Couple of things (I'm running WM6 on my M3100, so WM5 is a bit of distant memory ) you could look at.....
First, does your router use DHCP to issue IP addresses? if not, you'll need to set the phone with a static IP. To do that, go to Start / Settings / Connections tab / Wi-Fi / Network adapters tab, make sure it says "connect to the internet" then tap the "802.11" network adapter, tap "use specific ip address", fill one in and "ok" your way back out.
Second, in Start / Settings / Connections tab / Wi-Fi / Wireless tab, tap and hold your "unavailable" wireless connection then choose Edit. Make sure the "connects to" box says Internet. Also, if your router doesn't broadcast its' SSID, (on WM6 at least) tick the box that says "this is a hidden network", then go next, next finish (making sure the authentication and encryption types match your router config!!).
Hope this helps,
Mark.
I have now been through every intricate detail within settings, and still to no avail. One (possibly) good thing did come out of it though - an error message.
I got it when going to create a new WiFi connection and clicking on the 802.1x tab, it says:
"Cannot log on to the wireless network. This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you."
I made sure I inputted the network key correctly and all the encryption settings were right.
Please tell me that helps solve the problem! lol
btw, the router is a D-Link DSL-604+, just incase that helps anybody solve the problem.
sebastian
If you're getting certificate errors, it sounds as though you've ticked the setting in the phone's wireless config that says something like "IEEE 802.1x network access" and selected "smart card or certificate".
Go back in to the wireless config, tap and hold the "unavailable" network, then select Edit. Go through - next, next and the authentication is on the last page IIRC.....just untick the box, tap finish and you should be away!!
Cheers,
Mark.
It WORKS!!
I forgot to untick 'The network key is automatically provided' and tried to connect, and it now works
I'll just kiss goodbye to my battery life now
Thanks for everyone who has helped me.

My ATT Tilt wont connect to my D-Link Wireless N Router.. does the Tilt not work on N routers?
Hi folks,
yesteray I got a german O2 XDA Guide and i have problems with setting up the Connections. Wi-Fi is correctly configurated and properly connected with my router, but neither IE nor Opera can acces the internet through it. The same case when i try with Network Provider.
The odd thing is, that the "connect with" dropdownlist in "Settings/Wireless configuration" (sorry don´t know the correct engl translation) is empty, though correct SSID is displayed in "Networkname".
Also when i go into "Networkcard configuration" the dropdownlist "connect Networkcard to" is empty for each network adapter.
Is this a bug or did i miss anything? pls help
I´m using ROM version: 1.09.207.5(40104)
It seems the wi-fi is NOT configured correctly.
Try other security settings. Or try no security on the router, see if it works
