I don't use the IM app so I decided to remove it, after looking around it changed the file system to read/write using an app and then "rm'ed" IM.app from /system/app.
The only problem is that the icon still appears in the program list, is there a way to get rid of this?
the IM.apk i think is part of the core of android. if you remove it, it will cause some problems. i think there are some providers.apk that is associated with the IM.apk, so when u rmeoved the IM.apk, it might not have been a clean delete.

Somehow I have removed all the shortcuts from my programs folder, i.e. they no longer show up when i press start, all i get is
Today
Programs
Settings
If I go into programs all i see is the games folder
I can still run the programs from their defualt folders.
Anyone know a quick way to reinstall all these shortcutS or am I going to have to do them all manually ?
Not sure i even know what files types (shortcuts) or where they should be.
I am assuming they should be in /windows/programs as it is nothing there ?
Help

OK sorry for wasting yer time, admins remove or delete as you feel fit.
For the record though, not that anyone is likely to ever do this but....
This is how I believe I caused the problem
It started when I was trying to load an irc app on my phone.
I needed to put the app in /windows/startmenu and run from there
I copied across from my desktop
Using resco explorer I went into /windows/startmenu but it wasn't there.
So foolishly i started playing around and somehow in properties decided to untick/tick the hidden box for attributes
The result was that all files in /start menu/program folder were hidden
So by changing it back (somehow!!) through the properties, attributes, it's now all back.
So if your still reading this (fools) sorry, user error on a big scale.
Cheers, Numb
I got this shortcut in my program file called 'interactive'. It seems to be some nonsence marketing junk from Tmobile, and is probably installed via the extended rom.
No matter how many times I delete it, the bloody thing comes back. Questions is, how can I delete it for good, or stop it from recreating itself?
TIA!

Have a similar problem with Orange - whenever I make a change to the radio mode it reappears!!
Matt
That is installed by your SIM, every time you power up the phone.
Move it, you get a copy, delete it and it comes back.
It is nothing but a PITA and I believe only folder permissions would solve this, or a complete hack of the phone system. Neither are practical on our devices.
This is one of those "more trouble than it is worth" problems, but it sure does make our beautiful menu systems one item short of perfect.
check windows\startup - there's probably a program there that does this. back everything in there then delete all the shortcuts, and start replacing them one by one and doing a reset everytime to see which program is the cuplrit.
I had a similar issue once on my jam and that's what I did

Nope... got the startup folder empty. I think preditor is correct in assuming it is the SIM.
hi, does anyone know the root files involved so i can remove the samsung task manager, or at least permanently disable it
my problem is that my tab used to force close every time i tried to use it
so i use ATKfroyo, have it set to kill my unwanted apps on screen lock/unlock
but that stops working after a few minutes, (ATKpro does the same)
ive noticed that if i 'force stop' the samsung task manager, and providing i get no force close crashes
the ATKfroyo kill on lock/unlock keeps working for many hours
my RAM can drop to 40mb or less just from apps opening in the background when i dont need them to, and thats when i get the force close buzz.....buzz buzz buzz problems
i could even try replacing some of the samsung task manager files with the files from ATK and rename them so the device thinks its opening the samsung TK when its actually opening ATK, but im not sure how many files make the total app

You can use Titanium Backup to uninstall system apps
and will that let me reinstall it if something goes wrong?
i would rather know where all the files are that make the program
so i can replace them manually with the ATK files but renamed so the device thinks its still there and runs AKT instead
anyone?

then install "root explorer" from the market, and search for the associated files of Task Manager (or other apps) and copy/paste & back up manually.
if it's a system app, it will probably be in /system/app; if it is a non-system app, it's probably in /app
if it's an odexed system, many *.apk's have *.odex; and they will not run without the *.odex file, if the system hasn't been deodexed yet
some have files associated to them in system/lib (e.g. such as SWYPE)
if you say "ATK or AKT"? do you mean APK instead?
Hi again,
I`m new to android and have now got my Wildfire rooted and running the latest Wilpuzzle rom.I`ve also got live wallpapers running, got overclocking running and even Angry Birds so thanks to everyone for the help and advice on these forums.
The last little thing that is now got me is can you permanantly delete trash. As I`ve been playing around I have quite often put things on the screen then wanted to get rid of the icon etc.
So I do a long press and the trash icon appears in the notification bar at the top then I just drag the item to the bin and it`s gone.Over the past couple of weeks I`ve done this loads of times. My question is- Is there a permanent delete option like on Windows or is it permanently deleted each time I drag it to the trash?
If the permanent delete option is there where is it?
Thanks again
you can remove the app by downloading apps like easy uninstaller or uninstaller from the market.
or you can uninstall them from menu - settings - apps - manage apps... etc
or if you're using launcher pro, open app drawer, long press an app and drag it over the trash can until it says drop to uninstall, or something like that.
For the built in widget's, I dont think there is a permanent delete option. But, for 3rd party apps, you can simply uninstall the app itself.
you can also delete any folders that have been created by discarded apps using a file explorer
Thanks for the replys,
I have a file explorer and also know how to uninstall unwanted apps, but what I want to know is,when you drop something in the trash can, is it automatically permanently deleted or is it like Windows trash can where the files or whatever are dropped into sit with the option to permanently delete or restore.
If it is where do I find it on the system to find the recently deleted files/apps etc?
It (The widget) is just removed from the home screen, that's it. Its not uninstalled or removed or anything. (Unless you use LauncherPro/ADW's Uninstall Feature from the Trash Can).
Widgets are basically "functioning" shortcuts like the shortcuts on your Windows Desktop (Eg: Windows Vista/7 Clock, Calendar Widget etc), and, the same effect occurs when you remove a widget as is the case with removing a windows shortcut, i.e., only the shortcut gets removed. The app remains untouched. You can add it later as and when desired.
Lastly, there is no concept of Recycle Bin in Android as far as I know to view recently deleted apps / files etc.

Thanks 3xeno thats exactly what I wanted to know.
So I've been searching and searching ... but haven't found anything regarding this.
I've got a considerable amount of content on the SD card ... let's call these "shared pictures" ... storing these on the device memory is a real douchy move because it'll take up a lot of space that the user would want for their apps.
This data is currently stored on the SDCard, but here's the problem: What do I do with this data when the app gets uninstalled?
None of it is protected and it doesn't really matter if it's left on the SD, but why leave clutter behind?
I've been searching for either:
- an uninstall hook: Andy tells me when my app is being uninstalled and I delete my junk
- I register my folder with Andy and when Andy is uninstalling my app, it also deletes the folder.
Is there a standard way to accomplish this on Android?
Thanks.
I am not sure if I understand what you are trying to do. I assume the following:
You have an installed application with it's data in your phone.
You uninstall the app.
Then you are reinstall it and you want your data back.
If this is the situation then you can see this and with little further research you will accomplish it!
Edit: I was incorrect, it depends on the SDK/API level and where you store the data.

I assume you are NOT refering to the App2SD feature. I haven't found anything that deletes the cached files off the SD card when an app is uninstalled (or even prompts you to for that matter).
But, I know what you mean. I had tried a couple podcast apps and they left HUGE files on my SD without asking me if I wanted to remove them.
I found out because they kept popping up in my Gallery app.

To clear things up, I'm writing an app and am mainly wondering if there's a way to know when my app is being uninstalled so I can clean up my app's files.
