the shortcut that just won't die! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I got this shortcut in my program file called 'interactive'. It seems to be some nonsence marketing junk from Tmobile, and is probably installed via the extended rom.
No matter how many times I delete it, the bloody thing comes back. Questions is, how can I delete it for good, or stop it from recreating itself?
TIA!

Have a similar problem with Orange - whenever I make a change to the radio mode it reappears!!
Matt

That is installed by your SIM, every time you power up the phone.
Move it, you get a copy, delete it and it comes back.
It is nothing but a PITA and I believe only folder permissions would solve this, or a complete hack of the phone system. Neither are practical on our devices.
This is one of those "more trouble than it is worth" problems, but it sure does make our beautiful menu systems one item short of perfect.

check windows\startup - there's probably a program there that does this. back everything in there then delete all the shortcuts, and start replacing them one by one and doing a reset everytime to see which program is the cuplrit.
I had a similar issue once on my jam and that's what I did

Nope... got the startup folder empty. I think preditor is correct in assuming it is the SIM.

OOOPs I need some help please

Somehow I have removed all the shortcuts from my programs folder, i.e. they no longer show up when i press start, all i get is
Today
Programs
Settings
If I go into programs all i see is the games folder
I can still run the programs from their defualt folders.
Anyone know a quick way to reinstall all these shortcutS or am I going to have to do them all manually ?
Not sure i even know what files types (shortcuts) or where they should be.
I am assuming they should be in /windows/programs as it is nothing there ?
Help
Cheers, Numb
re
OK sorry for wasting yer time, admins remove or delete as you feel fit.
For the record though, not that anyone is likely to ever do this but....
This is how I believe I caused the problem
It started when I was trying to load an irc app on my phone.
I needed to put the app in /windows/startmenu and run from there
I copied across from my desktop
Using resco explorer I went into /windows/startmenu but it wasn't there.
So foolishly i started playing around and somehow in properties decided to untick/tick the hidden box for attributes
The result was that all files in /start menu/program folder were hidden
So by changing it back (somehow!!) through the properties, attributes, it's now all back.
So if your still reading this (fools) sorry, user error on a big scale.
Cheers, Numb

Delete My 5 faves apps completely?

Hi,
I used the delete my 5 faves cab, and I understand that it just stops the program from running. I have noticed that my faves takes up a lot of program memory. Is it safe to remove the my fave 5 apps from my wing? Also what programs do I remove in order to get rid of my 5 faves completely?
I have also tried to remove My Documents\Icons and it says that it is part of the system file and may damage the system if I remove. Is this safe? I assume that the icons (family, friends, sports, etc) are part of the my 5 faves apps.
I have searched the forums and the internet for an anwser so I can delete these items without any worries. So far I can't find a solid anwser that makes me comfortable. I am still pretty new to all this. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
It's kinda baked into the rom that tmo gives you. I suggest that you flash one of the ROMS in our rom development section
Thanks for the reply. I think that i have already spent way too much time messing around with my wing for now. I have HTC home installed, lots of registry tweaks and cabs. I also have opera installed (thanks for all the non replys) j/k. Im pretty happy with how my wing is set up for the time being. I would like to use it as is for now, and probably start messing around with roms at a later time, when I get tired of what I have.
If it is not safe to get rid of the 5 faves, what about the icons? When you go to file explorer/my device/my documents/my icons, there are four folders(Buddies, Family, Fun, Sports) with images in them. I would like to delete them and maybe free up about 2m of program memory. When I try to delete, it states that the file is a system file. "If you remove it, your device or one of your programs may no longer work correctly". I think that it would be ok, because they are just images, but I don't want to risk anything unless i'm totally sure. Any expert advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
you're freeing up STORAGE memory, not program memory. ROM not RAM. Anyway, if you used the delete myfaves cab, it won't run.
If the files are baked directly into the rom, you can delete them but they will restore on the next reset
Jeez, thanks for not being such a jerk about it. It's not like im trying to be mean. Did i mention that i was pretty new to this? I'm sure you never made a mistake in your entire life.
"If the files are baked directly into the rom, you can delete them but they will restore on the next reset"
If you had said this first, instead of, "It's kinda baked into the rom that tmo gives you." It would have been a lot more clear to a noob. So instead of getting irritated at my lack of knowledge, I think your lack of an explanation is what made thing harder.
But thanks anyways (filled with sarcasm to make things more clear).
no no no. i'm not trying to be a jerk (yes i get the sarcasm)
there is a distinct and important difference between storage and program memory. and i assumed you knew about the sys files.
Yeah, im sorry for being so defensive. Im just tired of running into so many mean spirited people online that i automatically think the worst. It's so suprising at just how mean a lot of people really are.
Anyways, i do know the diffrence between storage and program memory. I just got it mixed up. I also know the difference between Rom and Ram, but i did a lot of drugs when i was a teenager. Thanks for the info about the system files. I just learned something new today (with no hint of sarcasm).
The only work around I came across without flashing was this reg edit which turns it "off". First back ur regisrty settings using a app like "sprite backup" because u may have a problem with ur "faves" showing in ur call logs after disabling it. After editing ur registry make a few test calls to & from ur faves to see if they were logged. If they didnt restore ur settings & try again. For me it work but afew times at the start of my bill cycle a ota was sent which reactivated it. I just disabled it again.
HKLM > SOFTWARE > HTC > My5 > SMSC > CmdGet > StateRequest
Open value ClientService and change the value from 1 to 0.
edit: Disabling/deleting the "myfave" files doesnt hurt anything. All my 5 numbers have been logged correctly since I disabled it. It also worked without problems when I was using a custom rom. From the commercials I thought I would like it but its slows the phone even more & eye sore especially on phones with smaller screens.
is there any way to have it in a cab like that it will work with a cooked rom bc i will love to have myfave work with a manilla rom

Phone freezes when I navigate to the music tab

Hi All,
I have a new TMOUS HD2 with the stock rom. I've flashed HSPL and I've added a few tweaks such as landscae mode. Nothing too much for now.
Problem I'm having is that every time I navigate to the music player it seems to hang and I end up getting the "send to M$" notice and phone's locked up. Then I have to restart the phone again.
I have the music stored on my storage card under Music/Artist/Album/Song and I have about 4 gigs worth.
Any ideas to what this could be? Appreciate the help.

You flashed HSPL, but not a new rom?
I would start by putting just one or two mp3's on your phone's onboard storage, then pulling the card out, soft-resetting, and then seeing if your music tab finds and is able to play those couple of mp3's without locking up.
If it works fine then, you're probably experiencing the same issue many HD2 owners have been dealing with when accessing a large volume of files on the SD card. There's a number of suspected causes, mainly relating to the fact that the music (and documents) tab(s) index the whole contents of the card to find and catalog those types of files for quick use in the tabs. Therefore, a large number of files on the card seem to bog down not just those tabs but often the whole phone.
Another cause is believed to be the fact the factory card shipped with the HD2 is only a class-2 card, the slowest of all the speed ratings. If you have access to a faster card (class-4, -6, etc), even if it's a smaller size card, try that and see if it improves things any. If not, then your only other option right now is to reduce the number of files on your card until it doesn't lock up when sense tries to index it all. It's rumored that there's an update coming shortly from HTC/Tmobile, and I'm hoping that it might address this issue, but I'm not holding my breath.
I personally believe that the code used to do that indexing just isn't able to scale to the volumes of files seen now in the larger SD cards.
EDIT: Also, if you're not using it, be sure to turn off the "recent documents" tab...I don't know that it will clear up the problems with the music tab, but it can possibly help avoid lagging overall.
I can see what you mean about the indexing. Does it index each time the phone is rebooted or does it store the indexing in cache that's reused?

I honestly wish I knew
I've been trying hard to come up with a solution to this issue, and I'm afraid that's one of the unknowns that I'm struggling with...how/when exactly the process is triggered, and whether or not there's any cacheing. I suspect that it indexes (in some form anyway) much more often than every reboot, as you'll see if you delete a music file, and see how quickly the list in the music tab reflects that change.

Sirphunkee..I remember a while back when I first started reading this HD2 forum. Since before I was in the Wing Section. I read somewhere about copying a file to the startup in the windows folder. I cant remember exactly what file it was but it had to do with the music so when you woke the phone up it automatically started queing up the music that way when you went to click on the music tab it was already cached and ready to play?! I have yet to come across that thread again so that I could try it out?!

Ok cool, thank you! I hadn't heard about that one, so I'll go look for it and see if it gives me any insight. Did you have TF3D (the older version of sense) on your Wing, with a music tab? Maybe this is behavior that HTC added to sense at some point, with the same exact intent in mind...
you can disable the docindexservice perhaps it will be of some help. I don't use NRG ROM but the cook did put this cab out and you can give it a try, if it doesnt work just simply uninstall it and your settings will be back to normal

Sweet! Thanks again Jimmy...I'm gonna dig into this when I get home this evening, and poke around in the registry area it changes (HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila\HTCService).
I'm curious if it just does the same thing as turning off the documents tab, or if turning off the service is a wider-reaching change. Since this is the personal handiwork of NRG, I'll ping him too, but I know he's busy.
there are a number of possibilities (though i agree its likely to be the indexing)
don't use sync to copy the music, use disk mode, or put the sd in the comp
excessively long path\filename.mp3
extended set ASCII characters in the mp3 tags,,,
i'd copy over a few dozen albums at a time, see if there's a noticeable point which problems start.
also some connected reading here

Hahaha thanks Sam...I JUST finished reading over the same thread LOL Very helpful, and it's given me some further insights into this.
toreone, the first think I noticed common to your problem and the one in the thread samsamuel posted is that your music has a rather deep file structure (4 layers deep). I haven't seen anybody mention that in the troubleshooting, so it might be worth seeing if the same volume of music, but no more than 2 folders deep, still gives the same issue.
Also, in that thread, sammybusse made and posted the cab below, which makes simple registry change related to chacheing: HKLM\System\StorageManager\Profiles\SDMemory\FATFS
EnableChache 1 (changed from 0 to 1). So, perhaps the problem stems from the fact that it wasn't chacheing, rather than doing it too aggressively..
I haven't had a chance yet to poke around with it, but I think it's certainly safe enough to try and see if it makes any difference for you (it helped some people in that thread).
Another solution tried there, that had some level of success, was making sure you don't have any of the mp3's set as "read only"

Nibbley, when I did this, for some reason the file would only be renamed as AudioManager_Eng.lnk.exe. And once you do it, you can't seem to delete the file. Just a heads up.

opera 10 and camera usage

am i the only one getting mad problems trying to use both together? i ll have opera 10 open and minimized and ill try to run the camera and it will fail to initialize alot, sometimes just fail to initialize, sometimes it says not enough memory, but opera 10 will be the only other app running...
anyone else have this happening to them
I have this problem too. I think this is a known issue and there are no fixes as far as I can tell. you just have to kill opera 10 before starting camera or just use opera 9.7.
I used to have this problem
I used to have this problem but I removed most of the startup programs along with the \program files\selfservice (just renamed to stop.selfservice) programs and I can run everything at the same time. I even removed the bluet hoot service app in the startup but you can opened via shortcut.

connect to your PC with activesync, then use your PC to navigate to my device\windows\startup on the phone.
you know I just tried opening opera and camera and it's fine. perhaps it's working with the leo cpu patch now.
Just to follow up
My phone has been on 3 days without rebooting and I haven't close at all Opera 10. I have 26 processes running including 10 apps running. I think I solved the problem on my phone, not a single mem error.
So the problem was either in the startup apps or the selfservice apps.
By the way I don't use sense, i use SPB MS and s2u2, the phone feels fast very fast even with all that load?(only 179mb RAM free).

Did you try to unhide the folders on Windows explorer>tools>folder options> check "Show hidden files and folders" remember not to delete the files in the startup folder just move them, maybe you'll need them if something doesnt work well specially BThoot.
Do you open it and choose to connect as active sync on the phone or disk drive? I think when I choose to connect as disk drive, then only the storage card shows up and not the on device storage.

As active sync, and yes that's correct you can't see the phone storage when accessing it in disk drive mode.
The items in the startup folder are mostly just .lnk files, which are links to the executables in the \windows folder...so as long as you can find those again if ever needed, then it's safe to just delete anything in there with a .lnk extension.

T mobile HD2 latest ROM(how ever I was ok using old ROM).
SPB mobile shell 3.5.5 (Sense theme)

In My startup programs(windows/startup)>

there is an app called BTtrayCE, this enables the bluethoot, so if i want to enable bluethoot i press a shortcut that i made to that app, then i turn bluethoot, probably is ok to leave bttrayCE but anyway i dont use it.
then i renamed the folder
program files/Selfservice to program files/stopselfservice
in this folder there is a lot of trash from t mobile that starts when you turn on the phone.
I think one of my main advantages is SPB ms, really, it disables all that sense stuff that crashes the phone (in my opinion), you can get better performance by using titanium but, it is not too productive.
I'm attaching some pictures of my phone. it is running since morning (it died because of battery) the last screen shot i posted before
Again no problems with the performance at all battery last for 1.5 days but i dont have data plan, just wifi 21 hrs a day.
Hope it helpsss

Awesome Roberto, thank you! I haven't gone in to clean out my startup group yet, but according to what you're showing even the few things that are in there now can go...although I might just put bttray back in there since I use BT all the time.
Also, oddly enough, I don't have the program files/selfservice folder you mention...maybe it's new in the 2.13 ROM...?
They came on 2.13

Actually yes I think they came with the new 2.13 ROM. For some reason with those files running I wasn't able to open more than 5 apps at the same time - they were autoclosing-, i think that's t mo's solution for stability in the HD2.

In which dll are the 'dinik glass' icons?

I have searched the forums and searched through the usual dll files (tapres.192 etc), but i cannot find the great icons that came with this rom (Sense 2.5 CHT / Dinik Glass May 31).
The only 'glass' style icons in any of the usual dlls appear to be low res, despite the misleading '192' in the dll names.
Can anyone tell me where the icons are located.
I'm trying to change my youtube icon because, even though the Start>Multimedia>Youtube icon is the glass one.... when I add it to my quick links it uses the standard flat white YT icon.
Sorry if im missing the obvious here...
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Ok so it took me all day but I finally found the icons in the anastacia icon rar download. doh! was looking for 'glass' icons.... oh well.
Thing is though I simply cannot change the youtube icon from the white background one to the glass one. No matter what i do, Including clearing the htc icon cache, It always shows the white one.
Can anyone please tell me where im going wrong? this is driving me nuts. Is it something to do with where 'quick links' gets its program list?
EDIT, Im using JWMD IconChange. I was going to use SK Shortcut manager but it only handles .dll files
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Second this issue.. I've always had some issues changing certain icons like the file explorer or msn messenger.
Someone's gotta know!
Thanks in advance!
Aaron, I eventually found the answer....
You need to rename the icon so that it is the same as the executable name.
So for youtube.exe the icon should be named youtube.png rather than HTC_youtube.png or whatever.
Try it for any icons that refuse to change.
Hope this helps.
In return maybe you could answer one or two of my questions lol.
1. I disabled the startup anim using BSBTweaks. The phone didnt boot much faster so I re-enabled it but it still doesnt show at startup. Any ideas?
2. My SD card sometimes dissapears or wont initialise at startup. Last night it wouldnt show up after coming out of sleep/standby.
Ive increased the i/o delay etc in Advanced config, and even disabled power management for the SD slot but the card still 'dissapears' now and again.
I have searched for answers to both of these but after reading hundreds of posts I'm still none-the-wiser.
I'd start a new thread but people here seem adverse to helping me lol or maybe its just noobs in general who get ignored
People forget that they were new at one point. And sometimes searching just yields no answers, thousands of posts and no answers

Uh oh, you found the "startup" flaw. If you use BSMTweaks to stop the animation it can't be restarted. I have found that the only way to recover is a hard reset. I stay away from that switch these days.
When I originally found this "feature", I did some searching, but whatever they are changing is not the normal place in the registry that I found to control the animation - so I could not fix it.

Thanks for the advice on the icons. I'll give it a try in a bit.
Since the first question was answered I'll try for the second. It sounds like it's possible your sd card is corrupt. You should try and back everything up on your pc and then format the sd card and put it back. I think you can format the sd card actually while in the phone, that's probably your best option.
back everything up on your PC first still though.
If THAT doesn't work it could very well be the rom OR a hardware issue. Let's hope its the rom and not the hardware!
