HTC Hero coming to Telus - confirmed - Hero, G2 Touch General

Good news for Canadians on Telus:
Last night I was talking to a friend who works at Telus. We started comparing his Rogers Magic to my Vogue with Android on it, and he informed me that Telus is 100% getting the Hero this fall.
This also means there's a good chance it will show up on Bell Canada, Sprint, and/or Verizon. I don't know how many North Americans frequent the Hero forums atm, but I figured I'd spread the word anyway.

Telus' UMTS 850/1900MHz network is the same as AT&T, so I guess there won't be a T-Mobile US Hero anytime soon. Unless HTC cranks out a third UMTS version

So your friend works at Telus yet he owns a Rogers Phone?

Ya I found that suspicious as well but meh. Heres hoping its true!!

Looks like it is going to be a flagship phone for when your HSPA+ network goes live.
Sweet, means i can import it to use on our UMTS 850 network here

I hope it comes with the chin. I like the original design better than the Sprint one.

Holy thread revival Batman!
And yes, it does have the 'chin'.

lol.. wow dug deep for this one haha..
And for the person questionning the Telus rep with a Rogers phone, i work on Rogers's 3G network and i own a Telus Hero
Sometimes you just like how your treated as a customer

That same friend tells me that the Desire is coming to Telus next. FYI.

[tracking] Nexus 1.5 (3G bands 1, 2, 5)

So apparently Google is coming out with a N1.5 with 3G Band I (2100Mhz), II (1900Mz) and V (850Mhz), versus the N1 Bands I (2100Mhz), IV (1700Mhz) and VIII (900Mhz).
I do not understand why Google's flagship HTC handset doesn't support every frequency and they (whomever "they" may be) simply enable/disable in software?!
Anyway, I guess this means N1.5 will work on AT&T 3G.
Any insider tracking the Google release date for the AT&T capable Nexus?
Care to share an actual source?
Refering to this i assume.

Yeah, I saw this a long time ago. There was an article on cnet.

I was told by my AT&T representative for the SE region of RS that the phone is ready and is being tested to meet AT&T specs for speed on not only 3G but the upgraded HSPA networks. They however did not specify a date other than 2010 for the AT&T version. Soooo.... we shall see, normally they are right with the products coming to the market, like the Moto backflip which I knew personally was going to AT&T over a year ago.

But AT&T being the best service in my area I can't wait for this!

There is no chipset/antenna design that supports all UMTS bands at the same time. The bgr was just wrong, there are two distinct bb9700: one for t-mobile and one for att.

Yeah, that is a sad excuse of an Android phone. ATT is going the way of the big V. No open access to an open source project.
Just stupid if you ask me.

I wonder what they are going to do to the nexus..remove the unlockable bootloader perhaps? I also wonder if Verizon is going to do the same...
Being on ATT with a nexus one, I really do want to be excited by this news as I am tired of being on edge (thankfully I have wifi available most of the time), but I am concerned about the lengths ATT will go to after seeing what they pulled with the backflip.
I will just sit and wait and watch. Worst case scenario, my cell contract will run dry next year and if ATT buggers up the nexus I can always migrate to TMO with a new contract...best case scenario...I can sell my current nexus to offset the cost of a new one that will take advantage of ATT's 3g...hopefully by then all those dreaded iphones will have moved on reducing the dropped call rate and slow 3g found in my area (seattle).
Two changes needed to support different 3G bands:
1. Antenna
2. Baseband firmware

Is this a new Google N1 offering for AT&T

I just noticed that an AT&T "compatible" phone is now listed in the Google phone page. It looks like a new offering.
"Compatible with 3G on AT&T (U.S.) and Rogers Wireless (Canada) Supports three 3G/UMTS bands (850/1900/2100 MHz) and four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)"

I find it a bit strange that there has been no announcement from AT&T. Is Google introducing this phone without AT&T's blessing?... Is this a continuation of the Google (N1) and Apple (iPhone) battle?... In other words Apple attacks HTC and Google retaliates by attacking the exclusive supplier of iPhones.
I wonder if the at&t nexus one will have any minor differences from the tmobile other than the antenna.

I don't think hardware manufactures need carriers "blessings" to create hardware.
Whether the carriers allow the phones is a different story.

Agree... but without an "official" announcement from AT&T it might undermine the iPhone. There is nothing in AT&T's Smartphone offerings that really challenges the iPhone because it is AT&T's cash cow. There is no provision in the page to buy a "subsidized" N1 from AT&T... I also find that a bit odd.

Exactly... but if AT&T decides to disable a specific device (N1), then somewhere in the plan contract there has to be an stipulation that no "unlocked" phone from an unauthorized vendor is guaranteed service. To be honest, I have not looked at my AT&T Plan contract to find if such wording is in it.

That it is, but after using T-Mobile for a month and not having signal in a majority of the places I frequent, I went back to AT&T, even though it only works on EDGE.
I think this is great news and I'm also surprised that there hasn't been an official AT&T announcement...
damn!
I just had a friend from the US order one for me and I should be getting it Thursday or Friday this week!
Arg! I'm with Rogers and would love the 3G bands... I wonder if I can somehow do a swap??
I would also hope that some of the folks that bought the t-mobile N1 and that are switching to the AT&T model... wait to get their AT&T N1 before selling/canceling their t-mobile N1 and contract. This way we can get a side by side comparison of the two phones. Specifically, I want to know if covering the lower part of an AT&T N1 affects the signal strength in the same way it does a t-mobile N1.

unlocked tmobile using AT&T

i have a unlocked hd2 using AT&T i know they say it wont get 3g unless i bought the australian version but every once a and a while it will get 3g for 20 sec to a minute or so am i the only one experiencing this
That sucks, I was hoping to be able to move this to AT&T eventually. There's no point if there's no 3G though.
AT&T and T-Mobile uses different 3G bands. There is no way you will ever get AT&T 3G on a T-Mobile 3G phone.
to get a hd2 that can get at&ts 3g you have to buy hd2 t9193 thats an australian phone
OHHH NOOO!
CRAP! This is what I get for not doing my research properly. I have been absolutely HATING T-Mobiles network, I can go anywhere with my Tilt 2 and HD2 and the Tilt 2 ALWAYS has better reception and better G connections. T-Mobile is rolling out this new "Ultra G" but even if the speed hype is true, I seriously doubt that the COVERAGE will improve. And their coverage SUCKS! Ahh, but I love the HD2... Plan was, as others said, to move back to AT&T eventually, using this phone. NOW what do I do. Find an Aussie that wants to Trade?
no one will want to trade i recommend you sell yours craigslist or how ever then jump to eBay buy one from Australia cause if you bid on one of those t9193's that are here in the us expect to pay close to 800 if you buy from Australia you'll spend a little under 700

I too have noticed this. Especially on the northern side of the DC area. I've driven through and each time I get the 3G symbol for a little bit and then it drops out. So you're not crazy or anything else. I'm glad you shared this because I was wondering also.
makes me think that some type for software would enable AT&Ts 3g on the US hd2
I wonder also if they have the 850 mghz one in their supply chain and don't know it or don't care and have released them. I'm heading back the same way again this week, so I'll keep my eyes on my phone. I wish there was a way to tell what chip it is and what bands it will pick up.
They couldn't "just release" or enable cross-band functionality like that without clearing with the FCC first, and that hasn't happened. When the HD2 first received it's license it was certified to exclusively work on the bands specified, and AT&T's were not among those. And, even if you were able to "hack" it to work, you'd likely be violating the law.

I guess but it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison because you don't have to defy the laws of physics to jailbreak an iphone...but you would have to do just that to get the HD2 to work on AT&T's 3G bands.

Yes, but keep in mind that leak is coming from Korea and it's going to be at MWC so it's no surprise that it only mentions a GSM / HSPA+ version. Nothing says that there wont be a CDMA / LTE / Wimax version for Sprint / Verizon.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G with Tapatalk
HSPA+ is what the GSM carriers are doing for 4G right now. I think ATT is going to do LTE, T-mobile doesn't plan on it...I just switched back to sprint from t-mobile and the speed difference is ridiculous. Even on 4G, I am getting half the data speeds that I did with t-mobile HSDPA. Definitely not what I expected.
When the original Galaxy S was announced, it was GSM only as well but variants came out for all the carriers. I wouldn't buy anything from Samsung though, regardless of how appealing it seems.

Actually, the term pre-dates combo GSM/CDMA devices and was used to refer to GSM phones since GSM networks were the predominate cell technology outside of the US (and still are).
Oh, and to the OP, HSPA+ is being marketed as "4G" currently by AT&T alongside their yet-to-be-launched LTE network. Talk about confusing You may find that with a little bit of effort,( or none at all) HSPA+ equipped devices will bet interchangeable between T-mobile and AT&T. There are also rumours that some LTE-equipped devices will be able to swap between Verizon and AT&T.
Yep..me too. Actually breaking my contract (less than a year in because of Sprints abysmal speed) as soon as Infuse, or Galaxy 2 etc break.

I lived in Cambodia for five years and travelled between often to Thailand and other countries. They all use GSM...
I'm breaking contract with T-mobile. I had a G1, loved it. Got a Vibrant, it was a nightmare trying to get it to work correctly, although I can't lie, I still enjoyed having it. Got a Nexus S, too many problems, returned it. Got a MT4G, nice phone, runs smoothly, but the screen was too small and the phone itself is a bit on the ugly side.
The real determing factor for me was that Sprint has 4G in my area, all of the other providers have 3G, and T-mobile is still running on Edge. I'm within my 30 day trial period w/ Sprint and the Evo, and I'll see how it goes. I was really hoping on going w/ Verizon and the HTC Thunderbolt, but alas, it's still up-in-the-air when it will come out. Verizon is more expensive as well when it comes to data plans. And as far as the MT4G, although CM7 runs very well on it, and it is very stable, I still can't bring myself to buying a 4G phone from a company that only offers Edge in my area (supposedly the military base near here is using their 3G towers to link to Afghanistan, but that's their problem, not mine)

Do yourself a favor... don't buy a Samsung device. They make good screens, I'll admit. But you'll be waiting for updates forever, and somebody won't release the code... just look at the Vibrant threads... they haven't even gotten CM6, let alone CM7.

You're an idiot. The only places outside of North America that CDMA are used are sporadically in China, a carrier or two in Japan, here and there in the rest of Asia, and that's about it.
"World phones" are AT&T (since they use different frequencies than the rest of the world's GSM networks except for... Telstra in Australia?), Verizon, and Sprint phones which have extra radios that support the standard quad-band networks. That's why there's two models of the Nexus One: A T-Mobile/World model, and the AT&T model.
The future of mobile is going to be in wifi not cellular. Hspa+ is TM's trial run at nailing down seemless transfer from 4G to wifi for data and voice calls. Assuming there are not many stumbling blocks, their future (and any other wireless companies that dont want to be left behind) will be into switching to running purely off wifi towers.

sgs2 working on U.S. tmobile 3g

I have a friend that is reporting his new sgs2 is working on H with tmobile in the states and getting constant 7mbs down.
How can that be right? Is it possible tmobile is testing out the att merge and they are letting users on att towers?
Whoa, that's weird... I'm actually getting my SG2 from UPS today and I'll test it out with my T-Mobile sim card that's currently in my Nexus S. If I can get HSPA with my T-Mobile sim, that would be pretty cool!
There's no SGS2 with T-Mobile U.S.' AWS bands. It's hardware that's incompatible, not software. He's probably talking about the Galaxy S 4G.

Him being a dev doesn't mean ****. Hardware restrictions are hardware restrictions. He's either insane, or like Barry said below he could be roaming on AT&T. If he is then he will enjoy a multi thousand dollar bill.

Or his friend with the T-Mobile U.S. SIM in his SGS2 forced the phone to roam on AT&T and he's being billed $15 per MB for data. Let's hope he's not watching movies.

the unbranded sgs2 does not work on TMO's 3/4g network. Only way to get 3g/4g in the US is to get ATT.

Wow.
SGS2 on T-Mobile US - 250K sounds about right for EDGE.
Sensation on T-Mobile US - 1MB is ridiculously low so something's wrong.
SHW-M250L on Verizon - You can roam with an account from another CDMA carrier but, unless something's changed, Verizon is a closed network meaning you can't bring your own equipment.
Good luck.

Enjoy your CDMA brick. Verizon won't activate non verizon devices.
