Scratch-resistant screen? - Hero, G2 Touch General

Anyone know how tough the glass screen on the Hero is? I've been mollycoddling mine ever since I got it, but my brother just slings his iPhone in his pocket and it's never scratched.
My Touch Diamond screen ended up with countless tiny scratches after 6 months living in my pocket. :-(

Can confirm, concrete and the screen do not mix.

Get a screen protector

Hero's screen is made of "gorilla glass" same as the Iphones

I've been taking good care of mine too, only keeping it in an otherwise empty pocket. Somehow managed to get a tiny scratch tho.

Sorry for reviving the thread, but didn't want to start a new one. Can anyone confirm that the screen is indeed made of the same material as the iPhone per NisseGurra's post? (not doubting, just would rather ask and potentially find a source that confirms this )

I must say that the screen to me feels more plasticy than the iPhones ( I've held them side by side ).
I bought some protector screen off ebay, and so long as you put them on with care, they're very good.

Yeah I threw one on that came w/ a Flexishield case I purchased from eBay, but now I'm really starting to appreciate the anti-grease coating that was on the screen before I put the protector on. That's why I was wondering... if it truly is a scratch-resistant screen, I'd consider going protector-less for the sake of having a TON less smudging.

while it's pretty expensive, I suspect the HTC official screen protectors must have the anti-grease coating too - I certainly haven't noticed a difference in smudging level

in a small portion in the corner of my screen i thought i would test this out, even using a screw or blade with a fair bit of pressure it didnt scratch i think for normal usage ie keys in pocket you will stay scratch free.

I must admit, whatever they have coated the screen with seems to be far less scratch prone than other handsets I've had.
I do look after it TBH, but then I always do look after my handsets, hate scratched screens.
It does appear to be coated in a plastic and does not feel like glass. yet its cold to the touch just like glass would be, whereas plastic would feel 'warmer' to the touch.

In the most supreme irony, my screen has picked up a couple of small scratches. Lol. No clue where from either, it hasn't been dropped or mistreated.
Seems a screen protector is in order.

That's bizarre, especially considering your little corner-of-the-screen test!

Glass screen with/without a screen protector

As you know the Hero has a special coating on the screen, and through the first few days of use i found it awesome. Finger prints are never really much or a problem. But being afraid that the glass screen might get scratched i put on a screen protector but now sensitivity seems a little ( tiny ) bit less & the fingerprints are quite horrible. So just wondering who here uses it without the protector & does is scratch easily ? Comments welcomed
you do not need a screen protector for glass screen phones, such as the Hero or iPhone. My Hero has been getting a rough treatment for about 4 months now and not a scratch to be seen.
I got one from boxwave.com (Anti glare one)
http://www.boxwave.com/accessories/htc-hero-screen-protectors_3636.htm
It helps with smudges as well.
What screen coating are you talking about? White Hero has teflon coating on the casing which has nothing to do with screen, I believe.
I am not sure that Hero actually has got a glass screen. If so, I think that screen protector is just pointless.
If it actually has got a plastic screen, I would not ruine my phone with screen protectors. Phones are meant for us to use.

Anyway, a screen with very minor scratches is not only more sensitive than a screen with protector, but better looking too. Bigger scratches, well, a protector won't protect from those.
imo a screen protector is pointless...ive been treating my hero rly badly and theres not even a tiny scratch...i can even fall drunk on the road with ur hero in hand and it doesnt break (tested)

theres an anti-fingerprint coating on the hero. Makes smudges harder to get on it and makes it very easy to clean it of. Thanks for the comment btw

i tried it before but didn't like how it detorriate the brilliance of the screen.
I was gonna get a screen protector for mine. But all they had at the time were the universal kind. And I knew better then to fall into that. But its been a week and not a scratch on it. I try not to put other objects in the same pocket and take notice when I'm doing something that may put the phone in danger. Making sure to remove it from harms way. But yeah... I don't think ill fall into the screen protector money pit with this phone. That's my opinion though. I spent a lot of cash on those things. Prolly enough that I could've just used my insurance and got a refurbished .

Yup...more and more touchscreens are going to it!

i have the white hero and about the screen, i thought there was a screen protector on it already when it came out of the box? doesnt it?
i tried peeling the corners a bit but not too much cuz i didnt want the corners to curl up and not stick anymore, and eventually it'll bug me and i'll have to rip the whole thing off (happened before) so i just left it alone and assumed theres a screen protector on the screen

how does everyone find this concept in practice? In the last few weeks the phobic part of it seems to be failing, or I need to wash my hands more often... just seems to be more dirty finger smudges hanging around until I give it a good wipe with a screen chamoise

Oh the fingerprints will still show up but I just wipe it off with my hand (a firm swipe up the screen) and it's as good as new.
The idea is that the oils do sit on top, but they aren't sticking so you can just wipe them off again.
Yeah i always am able to see the fingerprints but a swift wipe and theyre gone. I also always find that when i bring the phone out of my pocket the screen is perfectly cleaned every time. I like it
Mine has a very small (5mm) scratch. No idea how it happened
I too have a small scratch, about 3mm, in the middle-upper-right. No big deal, but its there if you look for it. It's a white Hero, if it matters.
Those scratches, on the screen?!
I have a tiny scratch on my screen too! It's over the black part next to the branding though so it's not a problem. I purchased a screen protector after this happened though, just to be safe.
I use a screen protector on mine (and a gel case) and I haven't noticed any problems with it being less sensitive.
When I first got the phone (G2) before I put the protector on I noticed the screen looked rubbish because it had fingerprints all over it....
I'm happy to use a screen protector to protect against scratches.... I wouldn't risk without as I want this baby to stay pristine
I like naked gadgets.
To those who got scratches, what type of environment does your phone get exposed to? Keys and coins normally won't scratch hardened glass, but dirt with rocks and sand will.

[Q] Screen protector

Sad day in the life of SlightlyAmused. Put the phone in my coat pocket and it happened. One good size scratch down the edge, now it don't bug me too much but I figure it would be best to get a zagg on this bad boy asap. The problem is I cannot find any online!
Does anyone know where I can find some?
Also, for those who use them, will zaggs make my screen feel "draggy" or does it still feel natural?
Did you scratch the screen or the phone plastics? The screen's supposed to be scratch proof.
The screen. I have read that if there is sand between a credit card or something it can happen. I think its just resistant and not proof.
I had a Zagg on my N900 and it did feel a little rubbery/draggy. Either you get used to it or it wears off, not sure which but the feeling goes away.
I really want to find a screen protecter that is exactly like the ones supplied with the HTC Hermes and Kaiser in the box. Best screen protectors i ever had. Barely even noticed they were there and they lasted the time i had the phones.
I found a review on Steinheil protectors and they look good. Sadly they don't have any for Defy. Oh well, maybe next month.
Just be careful around sand and hard surfaces. I have read alot online so far that people have scratched the glass on other devices with gorilla with only sand in their pocket or on the beach face down. Everything else doesn't seem to effect it.
Hi,
for my Defy, i ordered Vikuiti (TM) DQC-160 3M
I hope it works well
DING!
Looks great and the reviews are all pretty good. The whole finger print thing dosnt really bother me as I usually wipe it off after I use it, or during it (hard to play casino kid 2 with finger prints imo).
Hopefully it covers a little of the scratch I have on the screen
Thanks!
and you believed them?

hmmm, those that believe that Corning Gorilla Glass is scratch proof are gullible, and mislead by Motorolas claim that the Defy is dust scratch and water therefore life proof, I have a Samsung Preston here that begs to differ thanks to the dirty big diagonal scratch down it's face
and I also have a still camera that Olympus swears to be "waterproof" despite the angry protests of almost everyone else who bought one which just goes to show you can never believe what a company says about their product
if you're wise you would fit a screen protector to it the very moment you unbox it like I did with my Sex1
and will do with my new Defy When I get it
(decision made!)
I wish realook made them for the defy. They are by far my favorite

imo phone never feels as responsive with a screen protector on - I have always used them when I had non touch screen phones, and when I got my Hero I tried a number of different ones and always felt they weren't working very well, when I just decided to start using it without one, it felt like a different phone. I haven't bothered with the Defy, not because of the scratch proof claims. I think the best defence is just to get in the habit of putting it in an empty pocket etc.
I feel the same about them until I put a realook protector on my vibrant. It's pretty awesome.

One I found in my search for protectors was skinomi have it ordered but still waiting.
Why not put your phone in an empty pocket? Hell, I did that with my dumbphones before touchscreen was a readily available feature.
Plus, isn't putting a screen protector on Gorilla Glass like putting tissue paper over kevlar?
for what little protection
where work is always better ... and is not an office
if you happen to a simple scratch , throw away the tissue paper
I am so used to just tossing it in my pocket that I dont really think about whats in there. When I rocked my BB9700 I would always throw it in the holster and I think I will be looking around tomorrow for either a generic screen protector or case for the phone.
I must admit the phone can take a beating.
I got a couple of decent sized scratches from a lighter in my pocket within 3 days (the perils of smoking!).
I just received my skinomi a couple of days ago and am most impressed so far. Using the wet one, I have no bubbles and cannot see the scratches now. It feels smooth on the finger, shows less finger prints and I have lost no accuracy. I will be interested to see how well the self healing thing works, as every other cover I have used ends up covered in scratches within a week.
I will post how it holds up over time

I can understand that. My new years resolution is to quit smoking.....year 15 of failed new years. I'm starting to think this whole "sticking to it" isnt for me.
I've had the skinomi on for a few weeks now. It is the most impressive protector I have ever seen.
I can't see the original scratch, nor can I see fingerprints much. I can see better in light and it feels better than the gorilla glass- smooth but rubbery with no grab. It is as responsive as stock and has no dulling effect on the screen.
I do have some scratches-more like pits from having it in my pocket with keys and a lighter and other stuff while climbing around at work. I realized I had my full bodyweight on it and I feared I would crack the glass, and it's hard to describe how I knew I had given it way beyond normal abuse, and I have cracked a screen before with half the pressure- these pits haven't gone away so I ordered another one without hesitation even though I can only notice them on angles, and even then not much (I could have gone for the lifetime warranty replacement but I feel I really pushed it beyond its purpose, and it's too much hassle -with the GET25 discount it's only $8 anyway, and I was getting one for my wife's Desire that I gave her when I got the Defy). If I had my Desire in my pocket that day, I would guarantee it would have cracked.
I can see no other scratches, and one's I have had just fade away in days, as it is self healing.
Does anyone know if there is any good "anti-finger print" screen protector?
The finger print just drive me nuts...
The anti-glare one from PDAir works a hoot!

Gorilla glass question

Hello all, I have a question about the gorilla glass on the DX. In your opinions, do we need a screen protector or not? I'd love to just have the glass front but also don't want to harm the phone. Also, exactly how many gorillas were sacrificed to make each glass screen? I want to rub it in PETA's face.

To use a screen protector...or not to use a screen protector.. that IS the question...
Um.. I think its more of a personal preference... Do you tend to be harsh on phones? Or do you take care of them.... That is probably some of the thinking you should put into the matter.
I have had my X for around 7 months, and I take it all over. I have not scratched my screen at all... Its really if you are overly worried about it getting scratched... If so, why not spend a few bucks to protect your precious investment!
I NEVER rocked screen protectors until I got my X... and that wasn't until I saw a scratch on a friends.....
My advice would be if you are going to get one, get a good one like steinhell or however you spell it.
If you get their top of the line it s also good at fighting against fingerprints.
+1 for sysadmin
and elevendy6 gorillas were sacrificed
If you are going to keep the phone in a jeans pocket I would say get the protector.
The SGP crystal clear you can't even tell it is there.
How easy is it to get a piece of sand in your pocket and it is harder than the glass.
http://chemistry.about.com/od/geochemistry/a/mohsscale.htm
get anti-glare ones, they show less fingerprints
Never used a screen protector or case. Never even bothered to take care of my phone. No marks on it whatsoever and I got it on launch day. Get a screen protector if you want to crappy looking layer of scratched up plastic over your screen. Get a case if you want your phone to be all scratched up.
Cases and screen protectors both do more harm than good.
My Droid X has proven very sturdy. It's been dropped, kept in random pockets exclusively (with keys occasionally) and has no scratches on the glass. The only damage to the body is a couple of minor dents in either upper corner, which have to be pointed out, and scratches on the back "M" logo.
I typically use a two-piece plastic shell, because I like the way it looks and it offers a little protection when dropped. I tried the Zagg Invisi-shield, as well.
I can't recommend the Invisi-shield, though. It went on with a little work and it felt fine to the touch. It was also only slightly more smudge prone than the glass itself. However, I scratched the protector the day after installation with a paper napkin. A couple weeks later, and a few bucks for shipping, my replacement shield was delivered with a tiny scratch in the center of the front side.
I say run without protection.
I have had my X since it came out. I briefly had the crappy Verizon screen protector/antiglare film on. I keep my phone in my pocket with the glass against my leg and have had no problems. For Christmas I got the Seidio surface combo case. So it isn't in my pocket as much anymore.
Ive had my X since before froyo with no protection whatsoever. I carry it like jgraham with the glass against my leg. I've dropped this thing on blacktop and facedown on concrete. Not a scratch on the screen. I have some nasty battle scars on the little ridge that protrudes up past the screen though.
I can't stand the screen protectors. I don't like the look or feel of them. If you destroy the glass somehow, just pay the $50 deductable or whatever. Well worth it to me.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I also recommend the Seidio Crystal Clear protector. It's much more invisible, and less friction, than the Zagg InvisibleShield. It's also much cheaper (you get a 2-pack for almost 1/2 the price of one InvisibleShield).
I've been using the Seidio for a few months now and it works great. I can't even tell it's on my phone, except it collects smudges a bit more than the naked glass. But a quick wipe on my shirt removes them. Cheap insurance in my book.

Maybe not scratch proof but I would probably say scratch resistant. I have hand my omnia7 for 7-8 months and it has one small scratch less than half a centimeter and thinner than a hair. it is only visible when the screen is off and i have cleaned it well or when it is on a white screen, if looking very closly there is slight discolouration.
i dont take perticular care of what goes in my pocket with my phone and and not extra cautious though i have only dropped my phone once onto a wooden floor.
in short I have a scratch that is barely noticable and i am not looking for a screen protector as i belive the disadvantages of haveing one would outweight the tiny advantage that having one may have. also i dont think anyone with a screen protector that has the scratch that i have would consider the bother of replacing it!
hope that helps!

thank you, NikD1.
Mine fell down, and - how else could it be - on the screen. This has happened now three times I think. Not a single scratch. Not even the tiniest one.
That screen is really great!
As I hate using protection foils that made me buy this phone
By accident dropped it 2-3 times, holds very well. The screen/phone i have in a special case tighten to the belt so that it does not get any scratches on the screen.
Amazes me that i don't have the tinniest scratch on my screen; the screen seems to be very effective against scratches and damages.
No case, no screen protector, always in my pocket, but separate from keys or coins
Fell once or twice from my hands, marble floor
Fell maybe 3 times from the table, marble floor
Fell twice down the road, on concrete
...plus it was submerged in beer !
it hold perfectly, but I do see a tiny dent right in the center of the screen when sunlight is quite strong. Nothing major, though
My HTC Desire at this point was way more battered
I don't use a case or screen protector and I've got the phone in my pocket everyday. After a few months still not a single scratch
I've had mine for 8 months and I have several scratches on mine. they are all from sitting in my pocket without anything else in them.
I noticed my first scratch quite early on (within a few months) but these scratches are actually pretty hard to see and you have to be looking for them pretty deliberately to see them.
I wonder if it is the same with the other folks... you may have scratches on your screen but you probably can't see them very well.
i dont understand why samsung dont have used glorilla glass for this device
When I compare my Omnia7 with my former phone(Xperia X1) is Omnia7's screen like a rock, but you can scratch if you carry it with key's or any sharp objects...
I carry my omnia in a Case around my waist and have no scartches yet

AFAIK it IS gorilla glass. (As it is the same as for the wave)
I don't think it has Gorilla glass, I got my phone, it was shiny and new, no scratches on the screen whatsoever (I inspected it thoroughly for defects) and after a few days of using, noticed a scratch when I cleaned the screen, thin as a hair but 2cm long Thankfully when I applied the screen protector, it has hidden it really well. I barely used the phone and I always kept it in my left pocket (which I only ever exclusively use for my mobile phone!)
i also have some scratches. after a month of use they appeared. i have no idea how they got there, i take a very good care of the phone, it never gets into contact with anything other than my fingers.
but the scratches are only noticeable when the screen is perfectly clean (which is almost never), turned of and looked from a specific angle.
I have more issues with grease. those guys are killing me.
Oh my god, so i'd better buy a screen protector for my omnia 7 :-(((
Yes, Gorilla Glass... After 3 months of use I still don't have a scratch (knock on wood) even without a screen protector...
no, it's not I am pretty sure... I got a little scratch now... I just want to cry now....
All I know is that both me and my sister got Omnia 7s back in November last year.
I put a screen protector and case on mine and am very careful with my phone and its still perfect.
She on the other hand has no case and no screen protector and is not very careful with her things. She has one little scratch on hers where her dog knocked it across a tile floor. It has been dropped numerous times and shoved in a bag with all sorts.
I'd say it's pretty resiliant.
A used phone without any scratches on the screen is a disgrace
Gorilla glass, even with the proper branding aren't totally scratch proof, to the best of my knowledge. Anyway, two omnia7 for 8 months, not a scratch (almost )

Discussion about Gorilla Glass 3.0 on the HTC One (M8)

Got my gray HTC M8 (UK, contract on 3 Mobile) on Thursday, been treating it like a baby since - keeping it in the rubbery case that came with it; putting it down gently; and when carrying it with me in a pocket, making sure to put it in one that is completely empty of anything else.
I haven't bought a screen protector yet because the one I have my eye on on Amazon doesn't seem to be available at the moment, but figured I'd be ok for a few days. I was wrong.
Today I noticed two hairline scratches, one about 1cm long, the other around 2cm, in the bottom left quarter of the screen. What I don't understand is how - every single time I get a new device that boasts Gorilla Glass, I think "well, hopefully it won't be quite so hopelessly fragile as the last" only to be let down time and time again.
So, anybody else with the new M8 noticed scratches on their screen yet?

It's quite possible there was a tiny bit of sand in your pocket, and that's really all it takes to scratch these glass screens my man :/
I haven't used a screen protector in almost three years. Do you lay the phone face down on tables, rub the phone on your shirt or pants to clean the screen, or use paper towels on it? I don't baby my phones at all and never get scratches. Sorry you scratched yours.
I'm just as unlucky as the OP, so I always exercise caution when having a new phone. Before even receiving it, I have a cheap case and screen protector just to hold me over until something better comes out. It's very important to keep my devices flawless because I always sell them to subsidize the cost of a newer phone. There are some people who will boast about Gorilla Glass being the greatest thing ever, but I've still experienced scratches on the few devices I haven't protected so well. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I'm just unlucky. Either way, I'll probably never stop using screen protectors.
I put a screen protector on the minute I got mine. However, if u were to believe the video on line then its practically impossible to scratch the m8 screen.
It's always the laying face down on the table that does it. I bet 70%+ of accounts of scratched screens is that.
Same scenario with 2 M7 I had, hairline scratches while I am very careful, though M7 is Gorilla glass 2 and M8 glass 3 so I was expecting to be better.
Perhaps HTC is using another coating above the Gorilla glass which is pretty scratchable
The double flip case was a good protection on M7 and the Dot cover will on M8
Something like grit in my pocket is the only possibility, as I've been using clean spectacle cloths to wipe the screen with and haven't even once placed it face down on anything because I wanted to avoid it scratching. I'm not sure how HTC Advantage works (if at all) outside the US, but I allegedly signed up for Three Rescue (don't seem to be able to access it at the moment) when getting the phone so if the scratches become unbearable then I guess I can swap it.
My previous phone was the black HTC One S, which, you know, had the whole "you don't need a case" claim by HTC, followed by many disgruntled customers such as myself being dismayed at the appalling transformation of the outer shell. Since then I trust HTC's durability claims a lot less, and I've never had a device with Gorilla Glass not get scratched in some way or another, despite being very careful with my devices. I just wish I had bought some form of screen protector beforehand...
Gorilla Glass doesnt mean the screen isnt scratchable. its hard to have a big scratch on it but its easy to do some tiny scratches... its always been like this..

Thats not how hardness works.
If you have something hard enough (compared to the gorilla glass) then it'll be just as easy to make a big scratch as it is to make a small scratch.
My M7 has a bunch of lil scratches on it, mostly from me putting it face down on tables, and one time I kept it in the same tight jeans pocket as my Anker battery pack (it was charging the phone) and somehow the battery pack left a rub mark on the screen =.=
Will be putting a screen protector on my M8 probably.. not sure.. meh
I have a cheap one ordered for now.

Will be putting a screen protector on my M8 probably.. not sure.. meh
I have a cheap one ordered for now.

thats the best way around. and I prefer http://www.clear-coat.com/ as i tried it on my Butterfly S and loved it! very thin smooth and you dont feel like you even applied any sort of protection + i got life time warranty on it.

I haven't used a screen protector in almost three years. Do you lay the phone face down on tables, rub the phone on your shirt or pants to clean the screen, or use paper towels on it? I don't baby my phones at all and never get scratches. Sorry you scratched yours.

This x 100. I think this every time I see someone say something like the OP. I have never used Screen protectors or Cases on any of my phones, and I have never damaged a single phone. Sure light scratches on the back from setting it on tables/desks, but never the screen.
Biggest reasons I see people scratch screens are setting it face down, putting it in pockets/bags with change/keys, or dry wiping the screen (using a cloth/shirt/etc to wipe off the screen... rubbing sand/etc in to glass)

As true as that is with other people, I've done nothing but treat the M8 with care. Never face down on a surface, always resting fully on a surface rather than hanging off, always carried in a pocket with no other items, regular cleaning all over,... other than the possibility of grit I still don't see how this could have happened as it's been treated with the utmost care. Even when plugging the micro USB cable in I've done it carefully and properly so as to avoid any markings around the port as happened on the One S. Yes, when my devices reach the end of their tenure they tend to look sub-par, but I never mistreat them. Other than my old Qtek and Touch Pro2, I've yet to have a device live out its period of usage and come out the other end with an unmarked screen.
Personally I always end up with little scratches on my Screen. My M7 was no exception. That had quite a few small scratches on the screen, but I never kept a screen protector on.
My M8 now has a screen protector and I will probably keep it that way. The ones I picked up are brilliant and I can't even tell it's on there without squinting my eyes!
I haven't used a screen protector since I had my HTC Hero and I never have scratched screens. The Captivate has some hairline scratches but it also went flying out of a moving vehicle so its amazing the glass isn't shattered entirely.
I've been using the original Desire since 2010 without a protector and maybe half of that was without a case. I can only find 2 or 3 hairline scratches which I can't even see unless I turn off the screen and reflect some light over them. I've slipped on some ice once and fell directly onto my phone without a case and it only cracked my camera lens cover. If my 4+ year old phone can handle that without gorilla glass, then I can only imagine that any new phone I buy should be near invincible.
I used to hate screen protectors until I started using Spigen ones. I get them for all my phones and most folks have no idea there's a screen protector when I sell the phone. They are very good quality, and the fit is always perfect if you take your time to do it right. NEVER buy those junk screen protectors that the carrier stores sell. Those are the ones that make people hate screen protectors.

a google search brought me to this forum and I just wanted to post to help get the word out there: I've had the same experience with my M8. this is my fifth smartphone total and I haven't used any kind of screen protector since the early days. I've never needed them, never had any issues with scratches until this one. I've only had it for two weeks and have treated it with the same level of care I have all the others but somehow it's gotten several in that time. it's like there's some sort of extra layer over top or something, but so far I haven't found any info supporting this. I tried taking it back but of course t mobile won't give me the time of day. so it looks like I'm stuck with it for the next six months at least.
excellent phone otherwise.
