Yes you can unlock a siemens sx56!
Installing the Special Edition ROM is the preferred method for unlocking.

If your phone is SIMlocked, a modest window will be displayed during the first boot. It asks you whether you want your phone to be unlocked, tap Yes.
As for checking your Radio version goto Start, Settings, System, Device Information (the latest is A.20.10).
HTH
how do I run the Special Edition ROM?
Nevermind. After trying it, I realized what a stupid question that was!! It would be great to have a written manual tho.......

Hey everyone. I am considering buying the Cingular 8125, which is also the Wizard i guess, and unlocking it to use with my AT&T plan. I dont want to change plans because i have an awesome plan, etc.
My question is, what will i be able to, and not be able to use on this phone using that old network? I suppose the data features will be useless because im not on cingulars network?
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
you will be able to use is unlocked but realize that cingulars tower coverage is better then atts, ..they purposley lower the coverage capacity of att devices so that u see a difference on cingular. And the data plans for att are now none existant . So beware.
are you currently doing this?
I just got a reply from someone who is using the mmode also.
i currently have no data on my cell plan, shoot....
can i ask where you got your phone? i am about to pay 450.00 for a non-contract 8125 tomorrow.
i'm posting this from an unlocked 8125 on a cingular blue (old AT&T) plan and I absolutely love it. I see no slowdown where i'm at compared to the cingular sim chips. on dslreports.com/mspeed I average between 125 and 155 kbs.
if you still can hurry and add unlimited mmode for $25 a month before they completely freeze the at&t accounts so that any change/add would warrant a migration.
once you do, get your 8125, carrier unlock it, cid unlock it, flash with button's cooked rom, flash with radio rom 1.13, customize your extended rom to the way you want (no need to use the cingular extended rom, its just bloatware because your on at&t's settings.
to get edge working just set your connections to connect to "my work network" on both settings, then go into my work network and add a connection "cellular (gprs)",name it at&t edge (or whatever you want. now the important part is that you have to set the apn as "proxy" without the quotes. then set this connection connects to the internet under the proxy setting.
leave username and password blank and domain blank. that should do it, then connect to internet explorer and you should be surfing on edge. good luck.
I paid full retail also, $490 after tax, and it was worth every penny. I could have got it for $250 if I migrated and used my FAN buisness account, but my blue plan is sooo much better. good luck.
cingular is pretty much refusing to sell one of these to me! The local store is out of them, and told me to call cingular to try to get one, and they wont let me have it without signing a contract. now what?
KINetics, i sent you a PM about details about how you did each of those steps. Are there writeups anywhere? Any additional help would be great. Thanks.

You should be able to order off line for full retail price of $449 without the contract. Thats where I got mine but had to pay full retail as I had just upgraded my phone with the Cingular 2125. I had 30 days to return the 2125, which I did, so they should credit my account soon with the price difference once it posts. I dont see why you cant just flat out buy it for retail tho. Just my 2c.
i'd love to do that but i cannot find any option online to buy the phone without a contract. how did you do it? I go to cingular.com and I try but cant get it to the card without a plan. I am on the old AT&T so if i try to Upgrade my device, it says i cant, i need to call because i need new plan?
suggestions?. thanks
danrw84: If you go to www.imatephonestore.com you can buy an unlocked phone there. I am using a JasJar with my AT&T SIM. No problems at all. You will have to pay full retail and get a Imate K-Jam which is the same as a Cingular 8125. The phone is $749 so i'm not sure you want to pay that much but it is completely unlocked and you can use with any GSM plan
They are based outside of Chicago so you can get next day service if you wish.

749 is quite a bit! Ebay has much better prices on the unlocks.
I got the phone thru cingular today for 314.00 its supposed to arrive tomorrow.
i am going to try to do it myself.
as far as the post from KINetics, anyone know where to get ahold of those ROMS hes refering to?
I did exactly what you're looking to do. I have all the settings if you get a phone. I bought one, cancelled the contract and took the fee hit, then unlocked it, etc.
PM me if you need the settings or have any questions.
I have Cingular and a few months ago I upgraded my phone to a refurbished 8125 (did this online). When it came in the mail I noticed that it came with another SIM card, but I just used my old one and everything worked fine. Now I look on the Cingular website and it says I'm eligible for another upgrade!!!! Isn't this weird? I called Cingular when I was having problems with the Wizard and apparently they have no record of the 8125 in my account so I quick hung up so they wouldn't realize the mistake. Not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that I have a premier business account (which gets me a 21% discount). Anyway, you think I should take advantage of this and upgrade again, or you think they'll catch on?

Is the refurbished 8125 the only phone you have? Did you have to send your phone back for the upgrade or given to you because of all the problems you've had? Go back to Cingular's website and you can see the device you have on your account. I personally don't see where you're trying to pull a fast one. This should be a compensation to you because of your inconvenience, and hey do another upgrade if you want! You do know now that Cingular no longer has the 8125 on their equipment list.
FYI: all replacements come with a new SIM card, your old card can be used in the replacement, or the new card can be activated by calling Cingular. Once the new card is activated, the old sim is immediately de-activated. In other words you cannot have 2 working sims.
This is how i lost my upgrade.
Hi, I have a prepaid service with telstra (the main telco in aus), and I have a problem with the credit. Whenever I buy more credit, as soon as I activate it, i recieve the messages you get for when you have less than $10 of credit, and the one for when you have less than $1 credit, and then after trying to message somebody (which usually costs me 1c), I get a message from the sms program saying "Message was not sent" (which happens when the account has insufficient funds for the service). Please help me, I have no idea what is going wrong here, I've already lost $30AU to this problem...
I tried using a brand new sim too, and just activated it fresh from box and it did the delete all the credit thing then too, so I don't think that the prepaid account is the problem. I've deduced that it must be something specific to my ROM and software configuration (As this problem never occured when I was running WM5 Ranju 7.6 or Tomal 8.2/8.5), which is why I have posted it here in the universal specific forum.
setup:
Rom: Tomal's 8.71 for Universal
Radio: Unlocked
ExtRom: Unlocked
CID: Unlocked
Software: None installed which have anything to do with gprs or wap or mms. I havn't got any weather apps set up.
GPRS settings: not set, so that no data can be used at 1.5C/KB (ironicly)
Thank you in advance for any information
Turns out either something was bad in my ROM, or Telstra are dishonest theives. Either way, I'm now running Tomal's 8.9 with Virgin Mobile and all is well.
Hey All:
Looking to upgrade from xv6900 (Touch) to Imagio; and wanted to know if there is anyway to connect an unlocked Imagio without paying for the data plan on VZW. I love VZW service and signal and donmt want to get rid of them. Any insight is helpful thanks.

You might try going to Verizon's website and manually switching your phone through your account settings. If you don't have an account there, you'll have to register and link it to your Verizon billing account. To switch the phone manually on the website, you just need to enter the new phone's MEID, which is found beneath the battery. I can't guarantee that will work if the two phones' features are a lot different, but it's worth a shot. Worst thing that happens is it doesn't work.

I've looked into this issue a lot, and there is no way to legally get around the mandatory data plan. What I ended up doing is upgrading to an Imagio through Verizon and bought a new Motorola W755 on Ebay. When I got the Imagio, I activated it for a minute to accept the terms of the contract, then had the rep credit back the prorated data charges.
Now, I'm using the W755 as a phone and the Imagio as a PDA. I'm still carrying two devices, but it's much lighter than the Treo 755p and Treo Pro combo I had been doing before.
