Hello all. I am making an application request that may (or may not!) be possible. Ideas would be useful...
Basically, the idea is for a vibration feedback for screen taps. Obviously this is already available, however, it would be good if the vibration feedback could be localised to a particular space at which the screen is actually pressed... I.e if you press the top right corner of the screen, your finger/hand would feel as though it was actually pressing roughly that area. I have no idea if someone has already done this.
I actually think this is possible on the HTC HD because I note on the game Teeter, when you crash into a wall, say on the left of the screen, the vibration seems to be coming from the left of the phone. This probably means that there are at least 4 vibrators (if thats what they are called!), in the device... and further, it is possible to programmatically access them. If we knew how to do that, it should be possible to do some X/Y combination, especially to make a more precise vibration feedback for our HTC HD.
Ideas and thoughts would be useful.

I would solve this by having differenznt patterns
Wow, I'd never noticed that before.
Are you sure this works in each corner? My pudding pullin' numbed fingers can only feel top and bottom vibrations in Teeter. Are you sure it's in the corners?
Either way, sounds like an interesting concept.

Check the disassembly in the service manual: http://mikechannon.net/PDF Manuals/HTC_Blackstone_Service_Manual.pdf
At page 24, you see they take out the vibrator.
There is only one in the Touch HD, so the requested application in the OP is not possible.
There may well be one, but Teeter certainly feels "stereo".
There is a distinct left and right separation.

Yes, that's true. But they probably just reverse the direction the wheel turns to make it feel different.
I don't think you will ever be able to localize the sense of the vibration to the part of the screen where you touch it.
@Fire69 good point. Just what I do with the wife.
V
With the wife, you could use multiple vibrators!
Guys, you may be right. I am really very dissapointed with this finding. The teeter game totally feels as though it has multiple vibrators. I doubt spinning them the opposite direction changes the feel. It probably a psychological effect which relates to how we are holding our HTC at the time of vibration (!).
Really upsetting.
Also, is there a software that vibrates on pressure on any point on the screen with any app? There is an option to do screen tap sounds, but not vibrate. Help would be sweet.

Ofcourse! What else would we be talking about?
BTW, you have a spelling-error in your sig (Rapahel => Raphael)
I think the impression of "stereo" tactile feedback in teeter is coming from your brain, correlating tactile and visual input. You see the ball crashing into the right wall, feel the vibration and your brain makes "vibration coming from the right side" out of that. Knowing that you are tilting your phone to the right adds to that and is the reason why you also have the same impression when not looking at the screen (just tried it ). I don't see any possibility of localizing a vibrational feedback with just one vibrator. Multiple vibrators - different story, but I still doubt that could work, as you would a) need _lots_ of vibrators to generate a sufficiently precise interference pattern, b) need immense computing power to calculate the frequency/amplitude/phase of each vibrator to achieve that pattern and c) must be able to precisely drive all those vibrators with those frequency/amplitudes/phases. While I'm thinking about it, you could also just have a matrix of, say, 16x16 vibrators with absorbing layers in between. Hmmm...might be an interesting project to build something like that...
Indeed... I am sure I could have done something to stimulate precise tactility with 2 vibrators only. By controlling the duration of vibration for the X and the Y axis.
Hopefully HTC will include 2 vibrators with their devices in the future.

Has anyone made a haptic touch plugin for wm6 devices?
Would love the phone to slightly vibrate when I use the touch keyboard.
I'm on a htc diamond btw.
I think it would be cool too, but I think one of the biggest problems is the time delay between hitting the key and feeling the vibration. I also wonder about the effect on battery life... anyways I would still like to try it!
You might want to do a search because I remember reading about something like this but think it was for the dialer.
I will post here if I find the thread.
-bridic-
Yea I am pretty certain one of the Iphone dialers is haptic or something...perhaps it's a dailer you have to pay for.
I have a couple kinda sorta solutions..
I'm at work so I don't have them here.. But I have one .cab that will vibrate when you press the number buttons on your dial screen, and it work's perfectly. And then I have an .exe that make's every screen tap vibrate, and it kinda sorta work's. I've looked for feedback programs for months, and have found nothing. The best thing i've determined which took me forever, is enabling screen tap sounds, and going into the registry and changing the default sound to vibrate instead.. I can also look up how to do this for you when I get home.. But really there's no good solution out there. On another note this would be almost considered tactile feedback.. Haptic feedback is crazy technology that deals with detecting the electrical current from your touch. That's why current PPC's are awful with this stuff, cause it doesn't have that technology, and most phones that say they do, don't, they just mimic it.

uh, not quite sure what "haptic" technology you're talking about, but any feedback of mechanical vibration would definitely be considered "haptic feedback". From wikipeida: "Haptic technology refers to technology which interfaces the user via the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations and/or motions to the user."
Also, to address concerns a little further up the thread: If implemented correctly, there is no perceptible delay between screen contact and vibration feedback. Me and a couple friends whipped up a little test application based on the WM6 SDK's application template, wherein if you tap anywhere in the application window, the vibration motor is toggled for ~50ms (this can be adjusted based on preference, but 50ms was a nice barely perceptible 'thud' with each tap). The feedback is, for all intents and purposes, instantaneous. Also, since the vibrator is only active for 50ms, you'd need to tap 20 times before you've drained the same battery as a 1 second text message alert, or 40 times for 2 seconds, and so on... really, I think the battery drain would be negligible. Anyway, proof of principle for using the vibration motor for haptic feedback is there, and the affect is quite nice, but we never got much further because of a lack of time and programming knowledge. By the way, if anyone has any information on how to hook into touch.dll (which would be the proper way of implementing a system-wide haptic response), I'd be very interested in hearing about it.
This sounds a very interesting idea! Not every program visually responds to touch when operated with finger, so sometimes I was just left wondering did I make the touch? Did the touch go through? Then one or two seconds later (yes my phone is that slow) something happens. This should help if not eliminate that problem.
Here is the cab for the haptic-esque dialpad if anyone was interested
i've noticed that when haptics is on, it tends to vibrate only every other press
such intensive vibration is probably bad for your phone

Hi,
Is their a way that the call answer|home|Back|Call End keys can be highlighted in the dark with say a white light?
That would be so cool when using the phone in the dark!
I guess it really depends if there's some kind of light behind the buttons?

Yes it is so stupid that I think a ten year old child designed it. They are impossible to see in the dark and often I press the wrong one and are almost throwing the phone in the floor in anger
I suspose a skillful "Mod-er" could silkscreen some glow-in-the-dark paint on an adhesive layer (perhaps as simple as scotch tape) and adfix it to the front. Who knows might even be a market for this. I'd pay $4.95 US for it.

A lot better without any additional lights, imho.
I like reading ebooks in the dark with the phone, and experices with other phones have shown that leds etc are annoying.
solution number one would be a sw controlled led system that could let you decide on/off, intensity, color, animation motive, strobosystem connected to audio output, blinking and blinking speed, for each key independently...
maybe i just exaggerated but what the hell since it's all impossible as the leds aint there i don't see why i shouldnt

You could probably use available GPIO lines (if any are not used) to control the leds, but modding mobile devices without some kind of blueprints is next to impossible It's unlikely there's enough space inside the HD to house the leds and wiring required for such mod.
just hold your hand below your HD so the light of the screen reflects onto the buttons, simple enough imho
The buttons are overrated. I hardly ever use them. The only one I use is the very left buttin for Voice Command.
And I am able to find the button in complete darkness!!!!
I wish they would be gone in favor of a bigger screen.
HTC wanted to illuminate the hard buttons, but couldn't. The strategy behind the touch hd was to create the first device ever that will totally disallow its user to obtain any useful information whether a call has been missed while he was away from the phone. Moreover, part of the strategy was to *make sure* no matter how much the community will try to correct this situation, that they will stand no chance.
For this, HTC went with a tiny, faint, green led missed-call indicator at the side of the on/off button, and to make sure nobody will be able to program a solution, they had to let go the illuminated hard buttons (since otherwise the community could have programed it to behave like the Diamond, and so it would have been possible to know if you missed a call). It was a compromise for HTC, but the manager of the touch hd product recently was quoted saying that they feel satisfied with this compromise, because they feel that sacrificing hard button illumination was well worth it if the prize is to create the very first device that can be 100% inefficient at showing the missed calls you had while being away from the phone (and no less important: is 100% bulletproof against any attempt of the community to disable this cutting-edge feature).

Actually it's 99.99999999999999999999999% inefficient, but in this situation (where you'll have to miss several billion calls in order to notice one) I thought it was safe to round it up to 100%.
Surely the simple way forward here would be through the use of quantum technology.
We know that there are no lights behind the buttons, but that doesn't prevent the butons being illuminated, because in another parallel universe some HTC designer might have accidently designed a useful and practical version of the HD (of course, this is where my idea falls down, as it's impossible for any HTC designer to be so forward-thinking).
Anyway, as I'm sure we all know, you don't actually need an object to exist to have an effect in quantum physics - it only needs to exist in theory to effect the time/space continuum.
So if we could co-ordinate a mass simultaneous experiment, where we all throw our HDs up into the air, and let them all hit the ground at EXACTLY the same time, we should find that we will have easily removed the problem of non-illuminating buttons for all those partaking of this exercise.
A small side effect of this is that we will also remove the issue of poor video playback, poor call handling, crap Today screen ..........
"Anyway, as I'm sure we all know, you don't actually need an object to exist to have an effect in quantum physics - it only needs to exist in theory to effect the time/space continuum."
Boy this is scary, if your theory is right, we could all be subjects of an quantum physics experiment. What if the HD in fact doesn't exist att all!? have you concidered that? If your theory is right, it could just be a flicker in the time/space continuum. :O what the hell, as long as it's persistant I don't care.
To the more real issues. Honestly, do you guys really don't know where the answer, home, back and hangup-buttons are located?? I had not even thought of the fact that they aren't backlit. Most time I don't use them at all, but I'm pretty sure most user here in fact can point them out in pitch dark if they had to. But I must admit the lack of light underneath them is a little bit odd from a design point of view though.
For the missed call isue, isn't there a way to make the screen backlight flash with very short quite frequent flashes to indicate missed calls? For those who check the phone for missed calls every other minute this could be a good med against hart attack (or atleast blue fingertip from pressing the power-button a million times).

Well... you have a point... but in the other hand your statement is pretty contradictory in itself. My computer (a macbook, I'll probably get my ass kicked for saying that) has no backlit keyboard and has something like 80 keys so it sounds pretty weard that it would be easer to learn the location of all of them. or have you written a program that alters the location of the 4 HD-keys so you honestly can say that it's impossible to learn?
1.first i had problem to hard reset it,it is not done as users manual says.
2.Digital Compass app needs to Rereset after each soft reset.getting "Magnetic interference" Error
3.Screen is so sensitive that is almost impossible for me to write text messages or e mails.came off Touch Pro 2.there i had no problems.
4.my Volume UP button sudenly stoped working
i think, they rushed the release and made this device pain in the ass.maybe we need a NEW ROM!!!
mine hasn't had these problems, knock wood. And I am loving the speed!
With the screen being so sensitive... why does that make it impossible to write text messages? it just means you dont have to bend your screen when pressing so hard to press a key...?
Having had a Touch HD - owning a TP2 (work) and just having sold an Iphone 3GS - I honestly love mine to bits.
Been playing with the phone all evening - and I have to say I am really impressed - Vibrant screen, awesome speed, gorgeous flash (vid's and pics are quite good too compared to my other/previous phones) - All in all I am well impressed. The OS sits together so well - not having to touch WinMo at all, that this is one ROM I might just stick with!!!
I like the hard buttons on the front of the device - one of the bad sides of the blackstone but I have to agree the screen is VERY sensitive. As I'll be getting an invisishield for it as soon as they are released - this will make it much more useable - struggling at the moment but I can honestly say its a good thing - VERY precise screen - compared to the iphone 3GS (which sometimes required a double press to register) - You just have to think about touching this phone and it reacts - lol
Overall - VERY PLEASED and super happy I ditched my iphone 3GS for this oh and its VERY slim - in fact one of the slimmest HTC devices I have ever laid my hands on. All in all about 2mm bigger in depth, width and height than a 3GS but with like 50% more display area - Now THIS is what I call an iphone killer.

heh, if your passing by hudds soon i.e. on teh weekend let me know fella and i'll hook up.
I agree on the sensitivity....it's awful....if, for example, you type something incorrectly...VERY easy to do..then press delete quickly a few times, it doesn't delete..it starts typing random characters!!
hoping there's a setting for this somewhere. A screen protector might be the answer though in the short term
I also had to hard reset (because I wanted to..not for any other reason) and I followed the procedure in the manual, has been the same for all HTC devices I've had
Not to *****, but the guys saying that the screen is too responsive... Are you used to capacitive screens? You need to get used to it for a bit, especially when you come from resistive screens.
Also, a phone that is TOO responsive? You never hear that from a WM phone .
compared to the iphone (yes, I know..I'm sorry) the screen is lousy!!

I don't have an HD2, but I think I've experienced this over-sensitivity on my iPod nano, which I presume has a capacitive scroll wheel.
Sometimes (although not usually) it becomes so sensitive that I don't have to actually touch the scroll wheel for the songs to scroll. It then becomes almost impossible to choose the song I actually want because when I move my finger to the select button the song changes before I can select it - very, very annoying and frustrating. I'm not sure why it's sometimes much worse than at other times. Maybe it's the temperature of my finger or something.
Anyway, it sounds like this is the same sort of thing that's happening on the HD2. It's a real pain on my iPod, and I would find it totally unacceptable on a device like the HD2.
Its just a case of getting used to the screen. Our fingers are too used to resistive screens that we don't actually lift our fingers enough and drag across the screen since unless we apply enough pressure on resistive screen it won't do anything. With capacitive we just need to re-train our fingers to lift off the screen another 1mm and it'll be fine.
Here's my suggestions:
1) Try typing slower to start with.
2) Or turn phone to landscape as the keys on the onscreen keyboard are slightly wider.
I can type quite quickly in landscape with between 1-3 errors per an SMS.
I'm loving this phone right now!

Just try another keyboard. One that doesn't allow to change a character once you pressed a character on the keyboard. Fingertouch Pro and Resco Keyboard Pro for example are great keyboards for the sensitive screen of the HD2. I myself like the Resco keyboard. It responds and looks very similar to the iphone keyboard.
BTW Fingertouch pro and Resco Keyboard Pro both allows you to make use of gestures. Together with this feature text input is a breeze on the HD2
(Better yet is MessagEase, but unfortunately, under WinMob 6.5, it has some real problems).

Hehe thats what happens with everyone who switch over from Resistive to Capacitive, at first they will hate it as they're too used to resistive.
But just within 2-3 days they realize just how much better Capative is. Resistive just sucks IMO. Typing is way quicker using a Capactive panel.

I had exactly the same experience switching to my G1 - I sent the first one back after a few hours as i was convinced the screen wasn't working. The next handset was was the same. A day or so of use later and I was sold and never looked back.
no..the screen is definitely too sensitive...this is not my first capacitive screen btw.
I've got my phone on charge on the desk next to me...and number of time it has open the calendar, or contacts...all by itself is amazing. A few moments ago (which has prompted me to write this post), it opened the calendar and the curser moved all over november....18, 19, 20, 24, etc etc...without me being anywhere near it!!
there has to be a way to turn the sensitivity down
Wow....
I was so looking forward to this device after my Kaiser/XperiaX1/Rhodium. My biggest gripe was always the speed, then the screen size, after all.
But this thing is next to useless. The capacitive touch screen is HORRIBLE, and the lack of a stylus so annoying that words cannot describe. I find that I constantly end up with apps closing when I try to press buttons near the top, etc.
Its impossible to type with, its so inaccurate. Maybe its unfair of me, coming from devices with keyboards but even so, I could type on the screen of my rhodium soo much better.
I guess that boils down to "capacitive screen" too, I guess I'll be going back to my Rhodium and waiting for a snapdragon or tegra powered system with a resistive screen.... Calibrating this thing makes no useful difference.
Sorry for the rant, more than a little frustrated with my £500 paperweight atm.

All I can think is you must have really FAT fingers becuase the screen on this baby is amazing and typing on it is amazing. It's a million times better than the iPhone.
I haven't ever used an iphone for more than a few mins.
I don't think the issue is finger size as I can type better on the screen of my rhodium which is smaller, but resistive. Its more the fact that I touch a button and something happens over the other side of the screen (maybe a slight exaggeration) and apps like Resco file explorer leave me trying to press the same button 20 times before I get it due to lack of Stylus.
Its not usable, its just frustrating.

Just give it a day or two. You'll never want to have an other device...
I really disagree with you on this. I think the screen and the responsiveness is superb to type on. Top of marked for sure. Beats iPhone and Hero imo.
The touch screen on HD2 just like a sexy girl - soooo sensitive.
beating the iPhone and Hero doesn't mean much to me as I haven't done much with either beyond a quick fiddle, but we are all held to believe that capacitive is better, so I was expecting an improvement on my old phones which have all been Resistive.
Maybe mine is broken I guess...
Still, I eventually managed to make a link to the task manager on the start menu. It feels like I fight with it for 30 mins and if I am lucky, I happen to get something done along the way.
If only it was like just about every other HTC phone I have used and had the little drop down task manager on the home screen where the X would usually be...
Its all down to
Calibration.
Ensure you calibrate the screen and calibrate the screen how you tend to use it.
I calibrated the screen with my thumb while holding it in the same hand. Scary but for its size and sensitivity it works great.
Be careful about calibrating with your finger then expect to type great with your thumb. Works okay but you will need some patience. You will get better results with calibrating with your thumb in my situation.
^Agree, re-calibrate your screen & see the differents. If you still want to sell, then put it in the Marketplace...
Try this fix.. For me it was a 100% improvement.

There's a tweak for that already [that puts it back there] - think it's a Dutty job - have a look in the other forum on apps
And BTW - I've owned an iPhone and many HTC touhscreens and I feel your pain - I too have issues with this one typing is pretty inaccurate (typically it seems to trigger the key blelow that which I'm typing on) and sometimes it seems to just not recognise a press at all....I end up jabbing it so hard with my finger sometimes in frustration! I'm becoming more used to it but it is a little dissapointing, given the iPhones screen (for accuracy and responsiveness) is certainly thus far better than this one
Guys, remember, this screen is going to take time to get used to. Capacitive is a totally different beast to resistive.
And one day is not long enough to fully get used to a device. I am having a few small problems with typing (mostly because it's so sensitive and I'm not used to it!).
Once I get used to it, I don't think there will be any problems. I can already type faster on the HD2 on screen keyboard than I could on the X1 hardware keyboard!

The Dutty's fix for this didn't work for me, but this alternative did, and there's a few other tasty treats on the post too...

Original Poster's phone could be faulty. I had a demo of an HD2 the other day, and the keyboard was going completely mad: touching the backspace key, for example, resulted in a flurry of detected key-presses not just of the backspace key itself but of all keys around it in all directions. I mentioned this to the guy in the shop and he said that the reason why they had put that one aside for demo purposes was precisely that they couldn't get the screen properly aligned/calibrated on it, and that the other models they had didn't have the same problem. He might have been lying, of course....
Lo,
not sure if it's just me and coming from my Hero, but I do have issues at times with the screen getting to recognise my finger presses. This can be in games to apps; I generally find that a firm press works but surely this should be needed.
Can anyone else confirm whether they have the same or whether mines gone a bit dodgy?

same for me
Mine started to feel less sensitive and on web sites I find it had clicking on curtain parts of the page for example I click my ebay tab but have to give a few tries as it thinks I clicked the tabs either side
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Yeah,,i'm the same when trying to select tabs on dolphin hd. It was a pain trying to play fruit ninja too.
Mine did seem super sensitive at first too and noticed like others that if you held your finger really close,b ut not touching, the screen still recognised the touch.
I hope then this isnt something that worsens overtime - I'll wait and see.
Thanks
I'm curious about this now because at first I also noticed it would respond if my finger was very close but still above the screen. I don't know if I've gotten used to that now or if it's actually changed. There has been two software updates so it's possible they tweaked a setting. Despite not noticing the hovering touch any more the screen is still far more responsive than my Milestone.
With the last 2 updates, they did change the screen sensitivity.
Could one of you undo the updates or hard reset, and see if it is sensitive again? That way, we know it's just software and tweakable.
I can't because I do not have my phone yet. Lol... (actually that isn't funny)..
My phone has had all the updates done and I find my screen sensitivity to sensitive. But then again I have come from a Touch Pro 2 where it wasn't the best anyway.
No problems here. Search for multitouch test on the market for some objective testing. (You can also see with this app that HTC solved the weird multitouch problem that previous devices had.)
From my testing, it seems to react better to a greater surface area contact; the tip of my finger barely triggers it, but if I use the full end of my finger it seems fine.
Bit odd and annoying
Mine's *too* sensitive.

I would call the HTC helpdesk and ask for a pick-up repairment or go back to the store and swap it for another one.
