How To Backup Radio/Recovery/Etc Images? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi all, as above. I'm still quite new to Android, and would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction as to how I can backup the above. I would like to have a backup of all the stock images for my phone ^^.
I have already done a Nandroid backup for my ROM, and the SPL (.009) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019 is identical to the stock one in my phone. If possible I'd like to backup the recovery image as well as the radio.
Thanks!

all you need to do is the nandroid backup it backs up the following partitions.
boot
cache
data
misc
recovery
system
all of these would be backed up if you do a nandroid.

Ok, thanks! However, when I tried doing a "fastboot boot recovery.img" using the recovery.img from my Nandroid backup, it doesn't boot up? Could it be due to my SPL (I've downgraded it to Crios' modded version)?

Hi all, sorry to bump my own old thread up, but I would like to know how I can make a backup of my current radio (if possible). I'm interested in doing this as haykuro's new root apparently stops us from being able to run 32A ROMS (I've a 32A phone) according to skittleguy, turning it into a 32B in a way. I'd like to be able to revert to stock if the need arises.
Thank you!

it already posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544761

I just found it too! Thanks!

Well thats only the instructions for how to get back from the 32B radio to the 32A radio with the supplied radio image. Doesnt say anything about how to backup the current one in your own phone, if its even possible? I'm another one of those guys that want to learn more and want to know how to backup the radio image (which isnt covered in a nandroid backup).

Same Issue
I have the same question and the same issue for days and I've been googling and have already gone through pretty much every forum sites... But, I could never find the answer on how to create a backup of your own phone's radio image. I could imagine the post is 3 years old and no one shared their knowledge.
I have a motorola spice xt-300 from mobilicity and I wanted to upgrade it to 2.2 or 2.3 from 2.1 eclair.... but there's absolutely no help out there or no on is willling to help
I managed to create a rom dump of my phone.... and it doesn't have something says radio.img I only got the following in the romdump folder:
boot.img
checksum.md5
config.gz
recovery.img
system.info.gz
system.tar.gz
no radio.img..... I'm sure there's either a tool like "Radio Trimmer" which is available for galaxy nexus phone only online or somehow extract or edit these above files and find the radio.img....
and then if luck enough someone will comeup with CMW for this phone and CM7.1 or 7.2
I did update my huawei phone to 2.3.7 android...which was not that hard...
and now I was thinking to update the radio by taking my motorola spice's radio and putting it on my huwaei phone.....But back to square one on how to extract the radio.img from your phone rom
I mean I could even donate also if someone could provide with these issues....
Please guys and those gurus...I know nothing is hard for you developers and gurus when it comes to the custom recovery rom etc....
Please guide this newbie or tell how much u charge for this little work?
And my apology for sounding irritated...

This is complex question. But...
1. No need to backup radio if you are planning to update from official ROM to next official ROM, cause old radio will not work at newest official ROM (generally). Most vendors do not allow to downgrade ROMs.
Cutom ROMs do not have radio.img. Yes, there are some exceptions, but in most cases - no radio.img.
2. Well, you still need backup radio.img. If you have HTC Magic (or other HTC phone) - you are lucky. There are a lot of official ROMs. You need just run RUU and extract radio.img (same as your current)
3. If you have other phone than HTC, so you can dump current radio, but you must have some linux knowledge.
There is linux command "dd"
Examples:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7 of=/sdcard/radio.img bs=4096
dd if=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/radio of=/sdcard/radio.img
Different phones have different blocks where radio is.
Parameters - they are different too. And you need to trim radio.img in extra cases.

Just a reminder, the development section is for releasing things that you have developed. Topic moved to general.

Bricked/Blind/Barely alive magic, no recovery screen (SPL ****up) any suggestions?

Hi
similar to an other thread here if tried to change my SPL
and never recovered.
I can still get the blue led going using TrackBall + EndCall buttons.
The orange led lights up when I connect the usb cable.
But I cannot see it from the pc in any way (adb/fastboot).
there is some life in it but not a lot, have not seen the screen light
up at all.
Would it be possible to get a new bootloader/spl on it? Perhaps using
some kind of automatic update mechanism that is build in using an
update.zip file on the sd card?
Any help is more than welcome.

Try downloading the ruu from your phone's official reseller.
T-Mobile USA standard OS.
Assuming that you backed up using Nandroid or something to SAVE and STORE your originally packaged Android 1.5 (Cupcake) version from T-Mobile...you NEED to restore that properly using a recovery image. Amon_RA has a great one, so does Cyanogen, obviously by now I'm sure you're aware. But keep in mind, to get back to that state...you must be careful not to alter any necessary files on that standard OS.
Do some Google searching and try to track down a Cupcake 1.5 download from one of those sites that leaked it or something. That's your best bet. Right now you don't need to be worried about continuing on from where you are. You need to backtrack and begin anew.
Sorry to hear that. I was thinking of installing Haykuro Apps to SD ROM and it needs to change the SPL. But I think not worth taking a risk.
Can you tell a little bit more which ROM were you planning to install?
Which SPL did you update to?
Which ROM did you have at the time of SPL update?
Which thread or instructions did you follow if any?
Hi
@mrjunix
I have a google ion, and therefore cannot return it unfortunately to the
carrier, as there was none. I went to the Google IO conference but
I am back in Europe and there is not support here.
btw what do you mean by RRU??
@Reignzone
I do have a nandroid backup but I cannot get back into recovery mode,
or fastboot mode or anything... the pc does not recognize it either.
@technicolor
I installed the Cyanogen recovery image and was able to install
one of his rom's. It worked fine but then I wanted to install
a Hero rom and I wanted to update the SPL.
Used the cyanogen recovery to update the spl using an update.zip
file. the phone restarted the "android" update screen came on
briefly and it never came back on...
changing the recovery rom should not be an issue,
and normally I think you do not need to flash your spl at all any more.
you can do a lot with the fastboot mode and one of the recovery roms

This is the same advise you gave me yesterday on my bricked MT3G, but if you can't enter recovery mode, a nandroid backup ain't gonna help much, is it?
Also, any cupcake downloads are not going to help either, if you can't fastboot or enter recovery.
I appreciate you trying to help, but if you pay attention to the OP (and my own post), you'll see that your advise isn't going to solve anything.
For starters:
My advice to have those of you who are in need to take an approach that allows you to backtrack you work. Perhaps you left out various details of your issue or process taken in order to end up where you're at.
Your bitterness isn't appreciated for my having misread the problem.
YOU are the one with the F***** device, not me.
Anyway, all that aside; you might try to read-up on various threads that could be of some help. Google search, HTC support, ADB, etc.
There's always something to be done.
Good luck.

Prepackaged programs that bypass the phone's software altogether to reflash the rom

Rooting Official Magic Sense Update

Hi all,
I just updated my Magic (Hutchison/3, Australia) (32A) to the latest official HTC firmware with sense ui (I had cyanogen on there before but it was too buggy for my liking). However, it seems that this firmware has the "perfect" spl (HBOOT-1.76.0008, Radio 6.35.08.29). I was planning to root the phone without flashing a different rom but i of course need write access to /system. My plan was to boot amon-ra's recovery to do this, however when i try and boot it with "fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img", i get told "FAILED (remote: not allow)" (same deal for the hero version).
My idea is to download an old sappimg.nbh and start up the SPL on the phone, which displays some messages about looking for that file when it starts up. I assume this will flash an older SPL; then, i install the system part of the new ROM but not the radio/SPL somehow (is this possible?) then follow my initial plan for rooting the phone
However, from what i've read it seems messing with the SPL is pretty much the only way to brick the phone. Is what i suggest safe/will it work?
Thanks guys

unfortunately wont work... it wont allow you to flash an older spl...probably will have to wait till an official 2.1 update comes out and hope that it might be rootable..
And THAT will teach me to look before I leap! I guess I can live with this update because its actually a HUGE improvement over what I was using before (radio reception is much better, text correction in the browser, sense is win in general and its much snappier) and I can still do usb tethering. But still, WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO US HTC!!!
EDIT:
I tried taking the rom image from the RUU and using fastboot to boot the boot.img from that but not even that works! I was thinking to do something like init=/system/bin/sh... I don't suppose theres another way to supply cmdline parameters to the kernel?

[Q] How to Restore factory for Aria?

I have looked for a weeks about how to root/update 2.2 rom for Aria here, that help a lot, thanks.
Now I got a question, and please correct me if I'm wrong. Once I "unrevoked", the boot part of the phone is already changed, so I cannot just flash back a original rom from recovery mode, is that right?
Second, I found that there is a Aria official rom for download, but my Aria is not AT&T one, so that one may not work for me - mine is an Asia version, no AT&T apps by default.
Any method that I can do something like "dd over usb" for backing up my Aria?
there is the old way of running clockwork without installing it. If you run a nandroid backup BEFORE you flash clockwork with reflash, then you will back up everything that is changed when you flash clockwork and root the original ROM, BEFORE any changes are made.
Once ONE person with this version ARIA does this and gets that nandroid backup to me (without the data image - I don't want that and you don't want me to have it) then I can work on a restore procedure for the Non-branded HTC Aria.
We are in the IRC channel in my signature line and have helped many people do this before unrevoked's reflash made it so much easier to root and flash custom recovery. I'd really like to do that once more so that we can put together a procedure to restore the Non-branded version.

Not 100% correct: if you can still load in fastboot mode (vol DOWN+POWER) you can still boot a recovery image and flash it on the device:
1. fastboot mode
2. fastboot boot myrecovery.img
3. (in the recovery) adb shell mount /sdcard
4. adb push myrecovery.img /sdcard/recovery.img
5. adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
myrecovery.img: whatever the file is called.
Bootloader is same as fastboot mode

Is rooting illegal? I know it voids your warranty but do you get apps for free and stuff?

Boot your phone into fastboot mode:
Power phone off
Hold Back key and power phone on
It will bring up a screen which either says
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
or
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
There will be instructions on the screen to power the phone off so you can boot as per normal.

Yeah but charnsingh says, if we CAN'T go into recovery.. You're assuming we can
The post is a bit misleading, cos we don't expect physical damage to the device (in which case, you get to the first splash, but can't reach recovery.. i.e. your Back/Vol. down buttons don't work)

Whenever I flash a new ROM I backup my data and apps using either Backup To Root or MyBackup Pro. When I reinstall my apps it never puts the apps back into the Market under my Downloads so that if the app developers update their apps it shows that there is an update. IN fac the only apps shown are the ones I've purchased.
What do I need to do, besides reinstalling each one individually, in order to have the Market get all my apps in the Downloads the way I want them?
Thanks
can someone explain what SPL refers to?
and then i hear terms like perfected SPL, eng SPL....
ive flashed some ROMs earlier...without worrying too mmuch about this SPL business, and now with a mandatory rogers update out, people are talking about SPLs (see rogers thread)
cheers
So what is an SPL anyway? What does it do?
The SPL, or Second Program Loader, is essentially the Android bootloader. It's job is more than just loading the Android OS - it also offers several other boot options, including Recovery mode, Fastboot, and HBOOT modes, and ultimately it's the SPL that allows manipulation of the flash nand on your device. Part of the SPL's job is to ensure that the data flashed to the device is correct. Most of the current shipping SPLs (apart from the "Perfect SPL's) let us flash a complete ROM image, but don't let us flash a recovery rom or boot image as it checks the verification signature. Haykuro has modified the SPL's available to remove this check and this is what the Engineering SPL's available offer. As the SPL is so crucial to the handset though, you have to be very careful when flashing it as if it's updated incorrectly then you may be incapable of restoring it without specialised hardware and knowledge. You essentially have a very expensive brick

Most of the info that i am reading/viewing is on the oringinal mytouch3g...does this stuff still apply to mine? Will installing a custom rom give me more ram? As a solution to the brick issue and not getting past the bootscreen or not beeing able to load fastboot or recovery here's a solution which I had tried on my magic after I lost all hope and it worked ..Thanks to God and google
while on the bootlogo screen stuck, insert your datacable. it will show fastboot in red color on top corner.
run the android sdk cmd from dos prompt and enter "fastboot boot recovery_image_name.img" provided you can find the appropriate recovery image for your phone.
after updating, it will restart and you will bt good to go

stock hboot (0.85.0005) ignores S-OFF?

Hi all,
today i discovered something strange and i like to get your opinion on that:
I am not able to do s-off things in fastboot even if i have s-off!
Situation:
Phone: Desire Z
HBOOT: stock 0.85.0005
FW: 1.34..
Rooted: did root, supercid and s-off via gfree and verified via gfree_verify - even hboot showes up S-OFF
ROM: GingerVillain 1.5
Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5
Problem:
First of all, i myself have no problem, but i started experimenting after a friend semi-bricked his desire z with same setup.
I did a nandroid backup and when i boot into hboot and do a 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' (with my nandroid recovery.img) i always get a remote: not allowed.
Now from my point of view this should only happen if I have a S-ON and should be impossible with S-OFF ?! Even using 'fastboot oem rebootRUU' does not change anything.
The thing that concerns me about that is: If something destroys both system and recovery, your pretty much screwed + bricked because hboot is not allowed to write to something other then cache and all of this basic stuff doesn't work:
- flash recovery with CW
- flash a complete zip
- flash an other hboot
- RUU
When I rooted my phone i have read everywhere that eng-hboots are not necessary any longer. But it appears that they are the only thing that helps and you have to install them as long as you have a working ROM.
Any thoughts on that issue / can you reproduce this / are fastboot actions logged anywhere?
You need a ENG. HBoot to use fastboot commands, doesn't matter if your s-off.
yeah, i came to the same conclusion..
is there any chance to flash a eng-hboot from a bricked 0.85.0005? i did some experimentation with a goldcard, but at least remote commands didn't change in behaviour..
I think being full-bricked when something goes wrong and not having an eng-hboot already installed is not an acceptable solution for most people here

My thoughts exactly, its kind of a safety if you can't boot into android.
i'm not sure if a PC10IMG.zip will help at all.. my friend tried flashing both 1.34 and 1.72 RUU ROMs as PC10IMG and this didn't change anything.. in fact, the 1.72 even didn' install the new .00008 hbott, so i thing there is some heavy write protection in the hboot making it more or less useless..
what i can imagine that works is aa gokldcard with sppimg.zip, but i haven't yet found one for the desire z..
i have the feeling that this is a huge problem because with a short research i have found at least 3 threads of people having bricked their phone exactly this way and are now stuck.. some of the experts here might pay attention to this problem and in my opinion you should also consider removing the 'a eng-hboot is not needed, don't use it' advice from the rooting section of the wiki..
So what exactly is your problem.
You destroyed recovery and system?
If yes, and you used gfree to get Super-CID just install an PC10IMG that has a version higher or equal to the main version in you misc partition. And then do the whole downgrading, rooting, flashing recovery again.
If you are not Super-CID you might need a goldcard in addition if the CID of the phone is not supported by the PC10IMG that you whant to install.
have fun Guhl
It is almost impossible to brick this phone. The only possible way might be a failed copy of the eng-hboot and this is why the warning is and stays in the wiki.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I thought so, too, but when flashing a newer original RUU using the PC10IMG.zip, the flash process runs okay, but after the restart nothing (still hangs in HTC screen, no new hboot) changes so apparently no changes are made..
So from my point of view the phone is more or less bricked.. i guess maybe some custome PC10IMG with an eng-hboot might change this, but i only found one for the G2 and wasn't able to find one for the DZ.. Thats why I thing that removing the 'UNNECESSARY' advice is justified (of course i don't want the warning advice that this can brick the phone to be removed)..
