Alright, so the issue is... I have the SDK... and it won't work on either of the operating systems I run. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, both 64bit. There are two main aspects I am after with it. Using DDMS to take screenshots and mess with stuff on devices, and the virtual Android system. On Ubuntu, DDMS comes up, but it shows my device as just ?????? and I am unable to do anything. I have already tried putting in the rules thing I found all over google, and it has done nothing. The correct IDs were in as well. On Windows, why I try to use it... it pops up with a command prompt screen for a split second and does nothing. On both Ubuntu and Windows, when I try to use a virtual device, all it does is crashes. This is with all different settings. So, is there anyone that can help me out with these issues? I just spent 3 hours of google searching to no avail. None of the fixes or anything I have found made any difference. Well... that's not true... one of them made DDMS not work at all... but that just needed to be restored. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Update: Doesn't work on my gf's laptop which has Xp either... wtf DOES this run on?

It's probably something simple, but most things are easy when you know how!
Unrevoked does not see my Aria.
Running Unrevoked 3.32 under Ubuntu 10.04.
The USB debugging is ON in the phone.
I have tried to run reflash from the terminal using 'sudo reflash' but it will not run that way, doesn't even start.
Any ideas?
(the last time I was here, I was getting the windows 6 hack for my Audiovox Starcom 6700! I still have it by the way and it still works as a pocket PC just fine.)

I upgraded the rom to 1.25.502.12 tonight, hope that didn't kill this method.

Either run the program with root permissions, or add appropriate udev rules to the file /etc/rules.d/51-android.rules. Instructions are available at the Android Developers website.
So, I probably would have figured it all out anyhow...

Just wanted to post a notice of success story of getting SEUS and Flashtool working under Ubuntu 11.04 with Virtualbox installed from the repository running Windows XP. This means that it IS possible to use both of these tools just fine under Linux (with Windows running as a guest). Looking around the web a few weeks ago led me to believe that it couldn't be done, as some people (Mac users IIRC) were having issues getting Virtualbox to properly handle the X10 when it is in flash mode. Here are the steps that worked for me:
1. Install Virtualbox from Ubuntu Software Center
2. Create a Windows XP virtual machine and install Windows
3. Add your username to the group "vboxusers" in Ubuntu (this will allow the VM to use USB devices) and reboot to apply the change.
4. Create a blank filter under USB in the settings of the main Virtualbox menu so that all USB devices can be picked up automatically.
5. Run SEUS and check for updates, first time doesn't work because it installs the drivers for flash mode, second time worked fine for me.
6. Use Flashtool, etc. as you like - fully functional.
It was just nice to realize I didn't have to look around for a Windows machine to borrow for the amount of time it takes to test out different basebands and custom ROMs/kernels, so I thought I would share here.

This is awesome. My SATA connector on the mainboard just broke and the disks attatched to it was my Windows 7 installation. Now that that is gone (until I get it fixed) I'll have to use this method because I had my Linux running on the reserve/backup PATA disk (just in case **** happens, and it came in handy now).
And I really don't want to re-partition those disks, reinstalling Windows, reinstalling Mint (Fixing possible GRUB or MBR issues etc.) So this is gonna come in very very handy.
As I'm writing this I'm installing XP in VirtualBox.
I had to reboot linux after adding the username to the vboxusers group before it could pick up my USB ports.
But else it's working flawlessly...

This is the key point
I have been using it for past 2-3 months didn't knew that general opinion was that it doesn't works.
well i don't have a filter coz i use my usb devices on linux most of the time so i manually add device.
confirmed working on both virtualbox and VMWare too.........

Manually adding doesn't work on mac, but it works on linux.

I suppose reboot is not exactly necessary for linux. You just need to logout and login again to update the granted groups.
I didn't create a blank USB filter, because I don't want to catch every USB device.
Instead I created a filter for all devices with just the VendorId '0fce' to catch all states of my X10.

Hmm... Not working for me with virtualbox, a mac host and a Win XP guest.
First tried manually adding. Next, I put a blank USB rule at the top of the USB filters. This time, it successfully captured and the hardware install wizard popped up. FlashTool did not recognize the phone.
Soooo.... are drivers from SEUS needed (unclear on that)? Sony pulled SEUS for x10, by the way. If needed, has someone mirrored it somewhere? USB drivers are installed - FT and adb work fine when phone normally booted.
I'm using parallel 7 on osx lion
windows 7 runs very smoothly and it can read my phone's sd card
but x10 is not recognized in flash tool
i thought virtual box and parallel are similar
so how to create a blank filter under USB in the settings ?

I figured out my problem. It was just as I expected. A different set of drivers is needed to use flashtool to flash when the phone is in flash mode. It seems that many people take this for granted, since they've had an xperia for a while, it isn't explicitly mentioned in the flashtool posts.
The flashtool folder will something called gordons gate (IIRC). If you didn't install that and try again.
Does it really work? I just found out there is a problem for ADB working under windows 7 as a guest. It is also documented as a bug

Given problem with that, I am very leery to even want to flash anything with that even though it is using a different driver.
Very good! After a lot of research. I was already trying fastboot, unsuccessfully, when I found this. Worked perfectly on Ubuntu 11.10 32b & VirtualBox.
One point I'd like to mention is that even creating the blank filter, besides flashing worked on first try, adb was not finding the device. I had to manually attach it, and more than once while rooting it. Pretty easy, but was unexpected and I wasn't waiting for something like that. May help others.
I still have to try filtering by verdor ID as suggested by User Name in post #10.

Does anybody know if is possible to use MTK Flashtool under a windows xp virtual machine (host-linux from virtualbox) in order to flash ROMS ¿?

I did not know about linux version of Flashtool. I will check it thanks a lot !!
My phone is a Zopo ZP900 and the win version of Flashtool is 4.0 on Windows. I don't know if the linux version is compatible for my device (MTK 6577).

i heard that someone run Ubuntu on his phone, but it's very difficult to use it, because of touchscreen interface. I think that running windows is impossible on this phone, except some WP7 mods i would suggest staying on Android
Yep, I have run Ubuntu. It is basically run by mounting an ubuntu image to a loop device mount point. And the GUI is accessed using vnc. Dunno about windows!
You can also try out windows..bt its just windows 95 desktop version..
And pretty easy to achieve

I happen to update platform-tools in the Android SDK from version 23.1 to version 24 on an older PC.
The newest adb.exe included with v24 no longer works on WinXP.
You will get the following error upon startup:
adb.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point WSAPoll could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll.

I've attached the v23.1 adb and fastboot to this post in case someone needs the previous version (which works fine with 5x up to at least MTC20F)
Just unzip and you can use adb/fastboot from the resulting platform-tools-v23.1 directory or copy them over to where your normal platform-tools directory is.
USB drivers for 5x
I also included USB drivers that work with 5x. These should work for 32/64-bit for winxp and vista. Win7 is maybe, haven't tested.
They WILL NOT work with win8 and above due to changes in driver enforcement. I am not sure about win8.x but on win10, there is a built-in driver that works with adb. To get bootloader/fastboot driver, just allow win10 to search for drivers. It will load Marshall London Bootloader Interface. This is for a different phone from music company Marshall, but it works fine since it is an Android-based device.
I could never find one official driver from google or lg that would work with adb inside android, adb inside twrp, adb sideload inside stock recovery, and fastboot.
I stopped worrying about why it works for other people and just fixed the problem myself.
Not sure if it matters to that many people these days, but it was confirmed the change in adb is not a bug and will persist going forward, so if you ever need to run adb on a WinXP box or emulator, you'll need to retrieve platform-tools-23.1 or earlier.
WinXP compatible platform-tools also could be downloaded from official repository:

Actually Windows 7 is still installed on nearly half of all desktop and laptop computers: https://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0. Did the most recent SDK drop support for it?
For anyone who wants to use adb on the latest version of Android Studio running on Windows XP use the adb .exe from version 23 and paste it into the platform tool folder. Keep a copy of the new adb.exe just in case you need it. No need to use the entire v23 platform tool folder.
The references in this thread have so far appear to refer to latest adb compatibility, particularly for Windows XP.
Does the latest fastboot still work fine with Windows XP? If not, what was the last known-good or thought to be last known-good version for Windows XP?

I am trying to connect an Asus Transformer tablet with "MTP file transfer" mode on WinXP Service Pack 3 laptop... cable is fine and the plan is to move from custom ROM (Android 6.0) to Stock (JellyBean) ... Something I already did few years ago having Win10 (I have the receipe used then)
I think I better get a fresh Win7 on my primary Win10 PC and start from there... I never liked W10 anyway ... and since I did mods to [finally &effectively] stop the [annoying, unwanted & plenty of bugs] Win10 updates ... I got funny errors when using dev stuff ... even DotNet ...
And I need to think a better O.S for the XP PC ...

Before jumping to my major O.S actions,
I gave a chance to my Asus Transformer tablet with another cable under the W10 PC and the latest adb (r29.0.2-win) and this second time it worked fine ...
The first time and first cable did not work (reason that drove me to the WinXP PC thinking the cause was Win10)

But this second time with another cable

And I was finally able to perform the format and flash series of commands to return my tablet to the stock ROM ...

Certainly I don't have the explanation of this, but I can tell you is not because a faulty cable or something related to the tablet.
And something scary to add: the first cable looks in good shape and is the one used every day to charge the tablet without any delays or issues ...
