I condensed my numbers from all over when I got my G1 and I am going to go through all of my contacts and try to make the phone numbers uniform. It seems like they all work so it shouldnt really be a factor but I am curious. Most of my phone numbers are either (XXX) XXX-XXXX from outlook or 1XXXXXXXXXX from numbers added on the go.
First do you put the 1 or the +1 in front of the ten digit phone number?
And then how is the ten digit number part done assuming the above?
Is it me, or does everyone's phone seem to like to add +1 in front of all numbers by default? Drives me insane.
Grab an app from the market called "Contacts Clean-Up". It takes your contact list, lets you pick how you want them to look (eg +1XXXXXXXXXX or +1 XXX XXX XXXX or even XXX-XXX-XXXX or whatever) and then retags all of them to match.
It's beautiful!
Personally I like the +1XXXXXXXXXX format myself but it's an old habit (I worked for Nokia once upon a time and they turned me onto that format)..
+48 (that is the main number for poland, it helps when you're in roaming) and then XXXXXXXXX (9 digits), but that's the way I do in Poland
The author of the poll has forgotten that this forum is not for Americans only
I'm a Lithuania living in the UK, but I use the same format in both countries:
LT example: +37078180530
UK example: +48649188526
I always use:
+countrycode (area code) phonenumber
so for US numbers:
+1 (123) 4567890
for Germany:
+49 (321) 9876540
etc.
The full ITU-T E.123 representation is the best way to store all numbers. The reason why becomes evident if you ever travel abroad with your phone.
+(country code)(local codes)(local number)
United States, area code 888, number 555-1212:
+18885551212
Taiwan (R.O.C.), area code 2 (Taipei), number 5555-1212
+866255551212
p.s. by the way for those who aren't aware: you can enter a + on the dialpad by holding down the 0 key for a few seconds.

This. Being from the US, I always stored numbers in the "ten digit" format, but after traveling with my Blackberry to Germany and the UK last summer, that caused all sorts of problems trying to call friends back home in the US.
Lesson learned; now I've got them all in the phonebook with +1 (or whatever appropriate country code). No problems dialing contacts, wherever I am
I preferred xxx-xxx-xxxx but this thread convinced me to add the country code to everything that didn't have it.
However, I don't like it all jammed together like +1xxxxxxxxxx because it makes it hard to quickly pick out the area code, or local code, etc. So I'm using +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx now.

Oh man! I travel quite a bit but yesterday I just went through all 216 of my contacts manually and changed them all to the form:
1-XXX-XXX-XXXX
Maybe I'll grab that app and use it to change them to the + format so I have no problems while I travel. Thanks for the suggestion and interesting poll!

Can somebody recommend me a good phone software program for my phone? The one that comes with it is troublesome - for example the directory listing is a mishmash of listing some by last name, some by first, some without any last name on display at all, even though I put one in for that person. Plus every time I click on the directory button it re-sizes the list, dropping some entries for inexplicable reasons until I cycle to the 'good' list again. Also it used to simply list the numbers as 9-digits uninterrupted, and randomly its started listing all numbers with dashes in between area codes and first three-last four digits, so half my numbers are listing the old way, half the new way. How frustrating, I want a better program.
Have you ever told yourself "The next time I'm at the shops, I better pick up XYZ", but then you get the shops and completely forget about it? It could be any variant, like:
"The next time I'm at the bank..."
"The next time I go to Mom's place..."
Etc.
Imagine having a GPS powered application that popped up a reminder the next time you were within X metres of a pre-saved location. That would kill the battery, wouldn't it, because you'd have to leave the GPS on the whole time.
I like what Google Maps have done to their latest edition which can show you an estimate of your location based on Cell Info. Can this be used to make a location based reminder application?
Perfection would be if the application could pickup the location of an Outlook Task as well, and if it recognises a saved location in the text of the Task, it would pop up. Just a thought...more likely wishful thinking
I've search the net, but I don't think an application with this capability exists. If anyone knows of one, please do let me know. If someone thinks they can make one, that would be great too. I'm not a programmer, but I would willing be a tester or provide creative/functionality input, if you like.
Thanks,
K

This is a great idea...and if we dont do it here we will wish we had....one of those things that just makes life simpler and once we implement it wont know how we got by without it....let's say you have something in the trunk or back seat that you keep meaning to drop off...say the dry cleaning or the computer you promised your neice or church....but you never remember obviously till you get home and see it while grabbing your things out of the car...well this type of service would go a long way to help you look like you're not the absent minded geek that we all know we really are!!.......while we're dreaming it up...how about a part of it functions like this...lets say you're driving out and about and see say a house you like...cause maybe you're in the market... a few taps would bookmark your location within a few hundred meters....and the next time or every time depending on how you have it set up...you'd be alerted that you were near your bookmarked location...sweet
Well apps like SKScheMA and PhoneAlarm allow system changes based on cellid so it should certainly be possible to set up a pop up box with a todo based on cell id. I guess the tricky part would be a nice gui.

You obviously didn't read the entire post. I already mentioned the battery drain issue if the GPS was used. The alternative was CellID. Thanks for taking an interest though.
That's a great idea. Phonealarm has location based profiles using cell ID. I'm sure that a skilled developer could use that to make an app that does what you offer...

now another problem is, from what I've seen on my device, tri-positionning was not accurate at all, around 500m accuracy as opposed to few meters of GPS. That could still be useful from town to town needs, though (like "go see your mother !" )

I followed the link to the App you suggested. Although the main page for the app doesn't talk about this CellID feature and the reminders, it looks like the update logs have them mentioned, and the screenshots look like the reminders must work the way I'd like.
UNFORTUNATELY, I've got an HTC TyTN which doesn't have a lot of memory for me to install .NET Compact 3.5 (I've got other required apps installed which I can't remove) so I can test the darn thing.
Perhaps if some of the other contributors to this thread would like to try it out and let me know, please?
I'm going to buy a Touch Pro next month (when they finally release an Invisible Shield for it) and I'm going to officially love this program, it it does what I want it to.

Don't worry about it. We all skim through sometimes. In fact, when I first mentioned the idea to my brother, he barged in with the same comment, just as I was getting to it
I think 300 - 500M would be sufficient if you needed to remind yourself to pickup a tub of your favorite coffee then ext time you were at your supermarket (unless you live next door to the supermarket).

I took another look at the app you suggested (Is it the one by Espinosa?). It looks like it's a full featured location tracking application, but I don't think it has the specific feature discussed in this thread.
In fact, the app seems to be way too big to be practical for everyday use anyway.
If I'm looking at the wrong TrackMe, do let me know.

In TrackMe -> yes the one by Espinoza -> Menu|Tools|Geofence|ShowAlerts|Add|General
where you have the option of specifying a Latitude and Longitude the distance from the lat and long, and whether to fire an event based on if you are in the area or not. In the NotificationsTab you can specify if an e-mail or sms is to be sent, and what address/number to send the notification too.

I don't want a SMS or an e-mail. I want that the application will open a specific note when I reach a certain place. Or a pop-up reminder.
PhoneAlarm would be the best. It does not have the exact feature you are looking for, but you can ask it to run certain program/application when you are within a certain CellID choosen by you. You can also label the CellID to your liking.
If you buy the software, you can actually ask the author to add the feature you want. He is very open to suggestions. And if you do, you can also ask him to monitor the CellID first, and if you are in the CellID, then the GPS can be used to track the range of the specified point.
Good luck.
Edit: I just checked the software, it has the feature of using the GPS for location detection.
PhoneAlarm can indeed solve the problem. You need to make permanent notes for each location, and then tell PhoneAlarm to open the specific note for your location.
For example: you make a shopping list note, create a profile on PhoneAlarm that's called Shopping, and tell it to open that note when switching to Shopping profile. You can keep the note itself, just change it's content. The same thing can be done for the bank, parents' house, etc...
My only problem with PhoneAlarm is major battery drain...

I know Marketplace, as a unified platform for wimno apps is in its infancy and that there are cracking issues and such, but given Microsofts many years of work in this area, not to mention developers work here and elsewhere, as well as the plethora of free applications all over the interweb I would have thought that they could unify a lot quicker!
Could they not give a guy a job of just herding them up, rounding up some freeware and doing a bit of good ol' Microsoft altruism and help kick start this thing! What have they got to lose? They could well afford it, so why no push, even on freeware, the biggest enticer!
We know the model works exceedingly well on other platforms (except Nokia/Ovi of course), and new users (greenhorns, noobies etc) would prefer to go to one place (ON THEIR DEVICE) read some peer reviews and get downloading..
In Ireland right now, there are a sum total of 82 apps in the app store. 2 weeks ago there were 80.
Now, I have the party poppers and bunting here for when it hits the 100 mark (picture that Press Release- iPhone style ) but I'd really like to track the growth of the Marketplace through carriers and in different countries.
So,
How many apps in YOUR Marketplace (approx) and where you at?
Found anything good?

Mon Dieu! Good God man.. now you know how sensitive that HD2 screen is, be careful browsing the marketplace in Holland. A slipped finder and.... !
If I recall correctly, there used to be some application in the iTunes Store too, called I Am Rich. Which was priced at 999,99 dollar!
Check out this thread m8. The app allows you to log into any countrys marketplace. tried it as there are loads of apps on the usa marketplace.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=577627
11 apps....zero games
From Norway
In Netherlands I had 22 apps, and Ireland I had 61
Approx 100 in total in Australia. 43 games... almost 4 times less than the US
How do you count the number of apps in Marketplace?? If I just add up all the numbers for categories, I get 94 apps for Russia. However, some apps appear in more than one category, so the actual number is less than that.
63 apps in total in France. 30 games.
BTW, I just noticed something. It seems that the market is chosen by Marketplace by the settings you have in Regional and Language settings at the time of installing the program. I have one device where I set it as English (UK), and another one set as Russian (Russia), so I get different number of apps there. I guess uninstalling Marketplace, swithing to English (US), reinstalling it and switching back should give you access to US market.
Yeah, but I guess you'd still need a US credit card to buy apps from the US market, like when using the 'marketplace location switch' tool.
Microsoft should just make all non-location-specific apps internationally available as quickly as possible, whatever it takes, and not leave it up to the developers. This just makes the whole "let's take on the App Store" idea utterly ridiculous. By the way, in Belgium: 12 apps at the moment.
Yes, I agree, this market segregation is plain ridiculous. Not that I care too much though - I don't like the idea of buying an application and not having a cab handy. I don't want to bother reinstalling everything over the air in case I flash another ROM or something. If they don't want to sell something to me I'll get it for free - plain and simple.

Didn't think about trying to register even.. guess I know what I'll try in a bit
I tried here in Italy but I had to select what kind of device it is and they don't have "tablet". I selected pther kinds of devices but when it asks for the device's name and gives you a list to choose from, again, I wasn't able to find anywhere it's name, not even Pad ME370T as it says on the user guidebook.
Considering I need a warranty repair I was pretty disappointed.

It shows up if you select the category "Eee family" then in device name you can select Nexus 7 at the bottom of the list. But it still rejects the serial number as invalid. I even tried the other number showing up on the package (one is SSN, the other PSSN iirc) and both get rejected.

edit: turns out I was using wrong serial, don't use the one from About Tablet window the sticker that was at the back of the tablet is the actual serial.
Sticker at the back of the tablet? I have no such thing. The only place where I see a serial is on the outside of the box.

I just registered two Nexus 7's.
First I went to the URL suggested by jh1521 above. Then I became a member. Then I registered the product.
There is a SSN on the box that is 12 characters long. The same SN is on a label that is taped to the lower backside of the tablet but unfortunately can easily be pulled off when unwrapping the tablet. The Serial Number that is found at Notifications>Settings>About tablet>Status was 18 hexadecimal characters and does NOT work for registration The first 6 characters of the accepted Serial Number were all letters. There was an O in them that looked like a number to me at first, but it was a letter. The last 6 were all numbers and there was a 0 there that was slightly thinner.
The product type is Eee Family. The product name is Nexus 7. With one of the devices I entered a zero for the number 0 the first time and was rejected when I corrected it to the the letter O. But I logged out of the site, deleted my cookies, closed my browser, opened my browser, returned to the site, logged in again, and tried again with the letter O and it worked.
Hope that helps someone else.
John

Firstly, hi to all the folks at xda-developers. I have always found this place to be the most useful resource when it comes to figuring out android, but never had an unanswered question till just now.
I just helped my dad migrate from a blackberry to a nexus 4, and while he is quite happy with most of the phone's offerings, he finds it exasperating that the phone does not display the company field from his address book in the people/contacts app. After a week searching online for answers, it appears this is indeed not possible on android yet, and the best advice I found was to manually change the company field to middle name/last name and then "everythings alright with the world again". Hopefully, the people on xda recognize that this is hardly a 'solution'.
I then set out to find an app to replace the phone book, but that was a dead-end. Too many apps out there, not enough documentation on what does what properly and most of the descriptions suggested that they were over-kill for what I was looking to do.
So, my question is this ... Does anybody who knows the internal workings of android 4.3 on the nexus 4 know if this can be a simple tweak on a rooted phone? I do not have any experience at all hacking phones, Im not even a developer, but I imagine the display is controlled by some sort of style-sheet type entity (xml?). My reasoning is that the information is already on the phone... The only thing that needs to change is the way the phone displays the information. Would it be possible, at some level, to edit a file to display an extra line of information?
Of course, if somebody knows of a specific app/mod that already does this, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Karthik
Oh yes --- IF it turns out that there is no way to do what I want without some major hacking of the OS, can somebody suggest the best way to unload the contacts from the phone to a desktop, some app that will automatically remap the company name field to the middle name/suffix, and then upload the contacts back to the phone?
The company is displayed right below the name in the top left corner of the people app.
At least in the paranoid android rom
Swyped from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
In the stock version, the only way to see it is when the actual contact is opened... Meaning, when viewing contact details. The problem with this is that when you have multiple contacts with the same name, it is impossible to dial the right one directly from the Phone App. Each time, one must click on the person's avatar on the left side, which does some weird 'half opening' of the contact, then click again on the top of that dialog box to open the actual contact, at which point the company name is displayed at the top corner.
In my dad's case, he has many many contacts with the same names, even same first and last (we in India have third initials that finally differentiate the persons!) ... On his blackberry, the company name ALWAYS showed under the contact name, and so it was easy to call the right person. With android, neither the phone app, nor the auto-complete introduced in 4.3 seem to care about the company name. So each time, he has to open the contact fully to figure out whom to call!
