Had my htc a few months now, has been working perfectly, but I hit a problem recently, the power button is no long responsive, in fact it seems as if it's constantly "on" pressing it does nothing whilst the device is running, and when i restart my phone i get a window saying "You will lose any saved work if you choose to shut down" (or whatever it normally it says when you turn the phone off). Now as you can imagine this is quite frustrating, I can return the phone from stand by removing and replacing the stylus, but it's also constantly draining battery (it now lasts less than 8 hrs with nothing running).
Any ideas?

TC,
You probably should send it in under warranty if you can. If not, you might have to open it and take a look and see where exactly is the powerbutton getting jammed.
Cheers.
please plugin ur charge oringinal not usb synch CP.AFTER 10min check ur device
Does that help? I've got the same problem, and I've read the six or so other threads on power button problems, but to no avail.
I lost my original power cable - I would buy one if it would fix the problem.
Cheers for any help, I feel like my phone's broken an arm!
I had the same problem. I was told to slide a thin card like a playing card under the plastic power button and gently open the gap slightly enough for you to blow hard under the button. Try blowing all around under the button from all angles. Gently lifting up button slightly. Let me know if it helps. Worked for me.
i have same problem it hapen when i have the phone couple days without batery inside strange anyone know how to fix it ? to be more funny i go to repair center not official and it start working propely ''magic hands'' after couple hours go back to switch on all the time i did open my device is without warranty clean the buton and staff and still the same

Hi all,
My phone is completely dead. My phone ran down to about 5% battery last nite so I plugged it in to charge and thought nothing of it. When I got up this morning however the phone had not charged for some reason and the phone was totally dead. No lights were on and nothing happened when I tried a soft reset or the power button. I left it all day and then pressed the four buttons to do a hard reset and the screen came up saying to press the reset button to continue or any other button to carry on. I pressed one of the front buttons and the phone started to boot but then faded away to nothing before I could plug it in.
Now, nothing happens at all when I press the four buttons...Also the litle slide button to open the battery cover doesn't seem to work and the cover won't come off.
Does this sound like a battery problem? Or is the USB connector screwed, which would explain why it didn't charge?
I haven't done anything unusual with the phone recently or installed anything new...
Can anyone suggest anything?
sounds like your battery exploded....make every effort to remove it and insert a new one. my battery also began to swell somehow but i was able to remove it before it damaged the device...
Hope you get it fixed soon...
lol thanks! Just need to get the battery remove slider button working I guess...
Hello guys.
I have a Jade (Touch 3g) which I have hard-spl'd and installed the SpaceJade WM6.5 rom like 2-3 months ago. Yesterday I have turned off the device and took out the battery to check the serial number. Device was working perfectly fine until I turned it off. Than I have noted the serial number and put the battery back in. Than I left my desk for like 45 minutes.
When I got back, I remembered that I did not turned it on. And when I tried to turn it back on, nothing happens! I have tried to charge it but even charging light is not lighting up!
I have tried the volume down + middle button + power button combination, even pressing the reset button, but no luck.
It is probably a hardware issue, which requires an authorized service station to look at it. But the problem is, I have hard-spl'd it and they are probably going to claim that it is out of warranty.
So my question is, which is really quite silly (but I still need to try), is there any way to load stock-spl before I send it to service station? I know it is not possible to install stock-spl without turning it on but maybe there is a chance
By the way, I did not made any chance on the phone or installed any programs in last one month.
may be..
Sometimes you simply have not correctly installed battery, so your phone can not give it power

no, I have installed the battery correctly, no problem. It is not possible to insert it in wrong direction anyway.
by the way, I have measured the battery with a multimeter, it reads 3,8 volts so battery is OK.
I used my Aquos Crystal all day. The last time I remember using it was around 4:00 pm. By 5:00pm, my phone was shut off. It wont turn back on. I tried the down volume button and power button trick and it didn't work. Any other ideas? And no it isnt completely dead. It had half of it's battery life.
I can get a new one for free with my warranty but before I do that, I wanted to see if there was any other way to turn it back on.
Thanks in advance!
Try putting your phone on the charger and see if the screen turns on. Just because your phone may have had ~50% doesn't mean that something(s) was running and completely drained your battery.
We don't have root so there isn't a way I can see you doing anything to the software that would cause your situation. That's why I believe your battery is dead.
I know this is probably too late for the original poster, but I have the same symptoms. I added the volume button/power app as well. But if my phone goes completely dead that doesn't work. i found that if I take a small object, like a screwdriver, knife, key, and press really hard, when I let go it will usually come back on, YMMV, but that has been working for me for about a week. I came here looking for a better option, but until I find one, or the phone completely dies, I am left with this fix...
Good luck...

Nice tip!!! Used butter knife, pressed REALLY hard, fixed problem. Life saver!!! Thanks!!!
Try holding the upper right corner (not the absolute corner but slightly inward underneathe the power button) tightly enough and while doing that press the power button.
1) My phone shuts down.
2) Everytime I turn it ON, it vibrates and it turn off again.
3) And when I turn it on, nothing happened.
4) I need to remove my battery first and then put it back.
5) After i put the battery back, it just vibrate and then shuts down.
Is this a battery problem or ROM problem? Im using Goldeneye ROM.
Right now my phone is working fine, i dont know what triggers the shutting down.
Thanks in advance.
It's your power button. I'ts a common problem. It either stuck or damaged. Try to wiggle it lose or replace it. The parts costs around 2 dollar.
Try a different battery.
But it's most probably the power button. A friend's S4 had the exact same issue. After replacing the power button everything worked fine.
For 5 dollars you can buy a set of 4 buttons. But it does require some technical knowledge. You can also take it to be repaired by a professional, but it is a lot more expensive.
But before doing any of that, try the battery first. You don't want to have your button repaired when it's actually your battery that's defective.
So few days ago my phone suddenly turned off and kept rebotting itself (It would reach the samsung galaxy logo and then turn off). I thought it was a battery issue so I removed it for 30mins and tried again, worked fine for an hour then problem started again. I left it over night to charge in the wall socket incase.
Same issue next morning and no solution.
I replaced the battery with a friends and the same issue happened on my phone (i used my battery on his and it works fine on his) so I removed the issue of battery itself.
That evening the phone then just stopped responding at all. It would not respond to pressing the power button (no load, no vibration).
Tried entering download mode using vol down + home + power. Nothing. (So cant use Odin)
Tried entering recovery mode using vol up + power. Nothing
Tried hard reset using vol up + power + home. Nothing.
(All the steps I used a fully charged battery from another s4 phone and removed/re-entered before trying again)
So I check online and notice some people having issues with power button, but even if that is the case - wouldn't my phone still charge? I dont even get the battery chargning icon on the screen when plugged in either PC or wall socket.
I opened it up and changed the motherboard with another samsung s4 and my original problem mobo still does not load on the new s4. (My new mobo worked on the old device though).
The ONLY response I got was when I used my original mobo on new s4 device and plugged it into PC, it popped connect and then disconnect sound and thats it (doesnt recognize usb port).
What are my options apart from getting another motherboard or going to a shop for a JTAG repair? I was contemplating just removing the power button and seeing if that helps in getting a charge response lol
Well your power button is broken for sure. Replace it and then test it.

Wouldn't the phone still recognize charging even if the power button is faulty?

It always takes a few seconds before it starts to charge. So maybe the device reboots before reaching the charging phase. I'm guessing though. But since your problems started with power button issues it would be the logic place to start.
The part only costs a few dollars.
Well I'm exactly in the same situation as you, since this morning on a i9505 running JFLTPE-GPE 5.0 ROM. The screen appears for 1 second or 2 (Samsung logo) then it powers off . I need to remove the battery to try something else.
Same behaviour, even for recovery mode, so Odin is not an option.
I thought that changing some kernel settings have caused that, but as I just put them back to default values, it should not happen.
I didn't have some power button issues, it was just powered off at my wake up this morning. In your case, does your phone vibrate and power up instantly when you put the battery ? That's the case for me, but it should not be the normal.
My problem is actually solved : indeed, it was the power button. I removed all the screws and played a little with this power button (air dust, etc...), enough to make it start correctly !
I managed to do some backups, and now I hope that it won't break again.

Yeah, that happened before (automatically powering up, vibrating, going to samsung logo and then shutting down and doing it again until I removed battery - putting the battery back in with start it up without pressing the power button).
When it was in that phase, the one thing that did work was doing a soft reset (home+power+down vol, and then holding just power) - however that only worked for like an hour before it went back to the restart phase.
However now it doesn't respond to anything at all. (Any kind of response I got was when I put that mobo in another s4 and plugged in usb, which just gave a connected/disconnect sound on w7, no life on the phone itself).
Be very careful as to what you do, I suggest you do NOT leave the battery on it and charge it (which was the last thing I did before it went unresponsive) - my guess is phone went haywire trying to turn on/off continously.
