Password protection at boot time? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

I really really miss a feature in WinMo (at least, can't seem to find it) that lets you password protect your device at boot?
I don't want a pin-based lock each time I resume my phone, but preventing people from booting the device (and preferably accessing the data) without correct password would be great!
Any ideas?

i have windows mobile 6.5 and i have tweaked it so it'll autolock. In that way, every time i do a soft reset,i have to enter two passwords. My phone's password and my SIM password. But sometimes it's annoying me

BUG in HTC Password/Keylock Function, need advice on S2U2

I want to enable a password on my device (I already have the sim pin lock turned on) so if my THD is stolen someone cant remove the old sim and still gain access to my data, (8gb is a LOT of personal data).
When i go into the settings/lock and set it to 'ask a password' when the device goes on it seems to disable the ability to use the keylock function. It asks for a password at boot, but once its on if you try to do the long press of the end key, nothing happens (no matter how long you hold the END key for). It seems to be either.. Password protect at Startup OR the abitity to lock the keys while the phone is on. Has anyone found a work around, cos id love to be able to password protect it AND have the ability to use a keylock function because its a big touch screen and i dont really want my phone to start calling at random when its in my pocket.
Someone suggested using S2U2 as a keylock, is this gonna affect any Touch HD functions (iv heard it causes battery issues) cos i dont really wanna open a can of worms by installing software if its gonna cause problems, and can i use it with TF3D, Thanks.
using happily with touchflo3d myself. didnt notice any battery issues. but I set it to autolock when it comes out of standby so i don't really "use" it much. I guess you just try it by yourself and find if it suits your needs?
you can always uninstall
"Smart Protect" would be perfect for you - I'm too tired to write down what it can do (its 4:00 AM) but it's the only software you need to feel safe. When your PDA gets stolen it even sends an SMS with GPS coordinates as well as the number of the inserted SIM card to as many numbers as you like (so you can give them to the Police and smile 'cause they will have everything they need to find the thief). It has tons of options and every single one can be set as you like. Just remember - once installed it cannot be uninstalled (ever) - manufacture restore is the only solution.

[Q] Privacy issues on hd mini

I noticed that when I boot up my mini and I don't insert my code, I can still use my phone. As in browsing through my emails, sms, foto's, files, etc.
The code's only function seems to be making the connection with a network.
Is this a flaw on htc's side or is something not right with my phone?
PIN protects only your phone line.
You could enable the device lock, I believe setting a time out of 0 minutes forces you to input your chosen password when you turn the phone on. This means you'll then have two passwords/PINs to enter each time you soft reset (assuming you keep your SIM's PIN enabled), but if you're concerned about privacy, it is an idea. You may also want to consider encrypting your microSD card.
Excuse me butting in to a non-familiar sub-forum, I was attempting to find the wiki page for this device, attempting to help someone buy their first smartphone.
yeah i tried that, but then it asks you for a code everytime you unlock our device as well and that becomes a pain very quickly
It's not that this bothers me that much, I just think it's strange the phone's protection is this weak
If it didn't ask you to enter the PIN when you unlock your device or use ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Centre, then your data would be at risk if the phone was stolen whilst it was turned on. I see where you're coming from (I've stopped using device lock for this very reason), however all the HTC devices I've owned have behaved this way, possible it is a Windows Mobile behaviour?

Not a WinMo problem. This is specifically an HTC problem.
The WinMo locking feature is supposed to be able to set time criteria. For example, set it to 4 hours. When you boot up your phone, it goes to ask the password once. Then it won't be asking it anymore until you reboot your phone again, or until you didn't move your phone for straight 4 hours. You can set different number of hours for this effect.
All my other WinMo phones from 5.0 to 6.x does this thing perfectly. Only my first HTC unit, this HD mini, won't allow this simple feature to work correctly as intended. HTC somehow tweaked this basic WinMo feature, and broke it. So now, if you enable the lock feature, it ask for password each time you come out of standby, no matter what situation, no matter how long or short your phone was on standby. Very annoying. Making it useless.

Yeah sometimes you wonder how did they screw it up so much ?
I really think its better to build a Rom from scratch, I also miss the normal functioning windows start menu. They crippled so much... its almost pathetic...
HTC screwed up many of those simple and beautiful stock WinMo apps, features, and configurations. Not just this one.
I don't really get why they did this. Maybe to discourage you from using stock WinMo apps? Or maybe they're just plain dumb dumb and dumber?
Ah, now I understand the problem. Have you tried other locked apps? CHT's version / S2U2 etc. ?
I don't know exactly what you mean by using other apps, but if your question is if I can use apps or shells without entering my PIN my answer is yes.
If you were aiming at the unlock code popping up everytime I put my phone on standby, it's a hardware button so apps don't affect it I guess

you can still use the normal windows start menu, just disable sense in the settings
it makes your phone a hell of a lot faster and although it's not that spectacular to look at, it's much more functional than sense
i've been using spb mobile shell since a few weeks after i bought my mini and it's made my phone a lot nicer to use.

Samsung Galaxy S - No Phone Lock (basic functionality missing)

I can lock my SIM Card and I can screen lock the phone (password, pattern, pin) but none of these actually lock the handset! am I being dim or is this basic function not available?
I want to lock my SIM (no problem) and lock my phone so that any time it is booted or rebooted it asks for a pin for the phone and one for the sim.
The only option I can find is to lock the lock screen, which would mean entering a pin/password/pattern every time my phone locks. I don't want to enter this 500 times a day just once when I power up.
This means my phone is completely unsecured, SAMSUNG please fix in next firmware release.
Every other phone I have had (including Samsung e.g. D780) can do this.
Are you serious? The phone auto locking after a set time or only when it is turned off then on? If I lose my phone when it is on I want it to time out and lock so no-one can easily access my info (there is a more serious security issue in that you can re-flash it to access). The auto lock may give me a little time to inform my network so they can ban the sim and then I can also use Samsung to remote wipe my data.
Steam Kernel in the dev section has partition encryption to lock the data away and it cant be accessed without a password - even if you flash a new kernal - if you do that - you cant mount the partition - so you can only wipe it if you dont have the password.
only works on 2.2 - not 2.2.1 according to the notes
if you cant install a kernel - then its not for you as he does mention its beta software pretty much - but he did do the original lagfix - so he knows what hes on about
go search in the dev section

[Solved] Weird lock-screen issue

Solved (how can I add that to the title?)
Verizon Galaxy S5, rooted and running 4.4.4
I had a weird and unsettling incident today. I had my phone set up for pattern unlock. I pulled my phone from my pocket and it was on a pin unlock screen. I was unable to get it to go back to pattern unlock, even with pulling the battery. As so often happens when I'm ambushed with a password requirement (the old pattern unlock didn't require a pin), I couldn't remember it. I'm sure I'll remember it eventually but I needed to have navigation right then so I had to do the reset, lost some stuff, nothing too important (old factory reset didn't used to wipe the SD so I lost some stuff there too). Mostly annoying but neither here nor there really. I always assume that anything on my phone is volatile.
So that was that. I assumed my phone had pocket-swiped and got caught in a pin fallback. Except I'm playing with my phone now and I'm unable to duplicate the effect. I have a pattern set and a pin behind it but playing with it and getting the pattern wrong doesn't lock me into having to enter the pin. If I get the pattern wrong several times, I get prompted with forgot pattern (which prompts me for my google account info) or backup pin (which prompts me for my pin but allows me to hit the back arrow to go back to the pattern).
If it helps, I did not have encryption on this device. It was not new when I got it so I had performed a factory reset so it should have been in exactly the same state. Can anyone help me understand how I got locked into this "having to enter a pin" state?
[Edit: I just tried enabling the pin lock screen and it is different from the screen that I saw which was more like the "backup pin" screen]
As an additional question, I see there is an option to disable the auto factory reset. If you disable it, what are your options for if you forget your passwords? How would you reset the device?
Edit2: OK, the clue was in there. If the auto factory reset is disabled, you are able to go back and forth between the pattern unlock and the pin unlock. If the auto factory reset is enabled, you jump to the pin unlock and then you get 10 chances at the pin and there is apparently no way to get back to the pattern unlock. I'll reserve comment on whether having the auto factory reset enabled as the default is a good idea or not.
Just as an additional note, I just checked and it is not possible to unlock the device from the android device manager when it has a pattern lock or pin lock screen set
This just happened to me after the tenth try and fail it wiped the whole internal and external cards and went in to boot loop I had to reflash the rom best thing to do is turn off the phone boot to safestrap and restore a back if you go through with the 10 tries at least pull your memory card before the 10th try
Sent from my SM-G900V using XDA Free mobile app
It looks like a good answer I found was that if you load up the play store on a browser on a PC, there is an app you can install that will unlock your device. Pretty smart (though not cheap [edit: actually pretty cheap, just not free]). I did need the nav but if I had known of this app, I probably would just have asked directions. I definitely should have pulled the sd card anyway.
Here is the link to the app. There is also a free version which does less. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.thomascannon.screenlockbypass.pro

How to disable required password on bootup

Ok so if your phone reboots or crashes, you will need to enter a password or pattern in order for the phone to work. Even alarms and everything won't work until you enter the password. That's pretty bad especially if you NEED an alarm
Some people mentioned turning it on and off and it would give you a prompt to disable it.
But for us rooted people, it doesn't give us that option. And our data is unencrypted right?
Is there a workaround if I install a custom rom?
The phone is only unencrypted if you unencrypted it. I didn't decrypt when I rooted, and a few days later TWRP was made to support the 6p without decrypting. I don't know about alarms not working when locked, mine works fine every morning and I usually after to enter my PIN or scan my finger when I tap on a notification. I was using Smart Lock with my Pebble Time, but even that still requires a PIN again after 4 hours (I'm not using it for Smart Lock anymore because the fingerprint scanner is so convenient).
If you're referring to the "please enter PIN to continue booting" part, go to security settings when tap your method (mine is PIN) and I am asked if I want to require a PIN to start the device. This will require you to put in your PIN while Android is booting up and won't proceed unless the PIN is entered. THIS would cause you to lose all ability to use the phone such as alarms or emergency calls. I would toggle this OFF ("no thanks"), and it will still require an actual PIN (fingerprint won't work) for the first unlock after a reboot.

I believe the OP is talking about how it requires pin on the initial lock screen after booting up. Not even finger print or any smart locks will bypass, you have to enter the pin. As far as I know, the phone is functional at this point, so alarms and calls/text etc should come through.

Correct, as I stated in the last sentence of my post. My phone is completely usable in this state. I can read and dismiss notifications, but if I tap on one to launch that app, I have to unlock with PIN. Imprint won't work. I have a Tasker profile to launch Spotify when I plug in my headphones at work and it runs just fine after a reboot and before I've unlocked.
