Does anyone know why my "G" icon is sometimes greyed?I mean, no problem it is a G, but why is it on gray background?
I don't see in the user manual anything like that..can it be because of my ROM?
In order to try to save a little battery and because i don't use data connections (wifi only), I set GSM only and deactivated HSDPA, does it have to do with it? Thanks
P.S. i've looked around for some nicer top-bar icons like some people have, but no success:any advice?link?
I'm not completely sure what icon you mean, but I think it is the icon that indicates that a GPRS connection is available (not connected).
To connect to the internet you can have different mobile wireless connections: GPRS (with a G-icon), EDGE (with an E-icon), 3G (with a 3G-icon) and HSDPA (with an H-icon). GPRS being the slowest, HSDPA the fastest, EDGE is not available in all country's and not every connection is available everywhere.

This is out of question, 3G is disabled with NoData.cab and HD Tweak.Furthermore, the name of my gsm operator changes when not in 3G.
@whizz: Thanks for your clear explanation, but as a matter of fact i have 2 "G" icons available (not at the same time), one is the white "square G" on black background (let's call it default, present in the manual) and another one wich is a normal G on grey background..curious..I'm sorry!I wish I could post a screenshot!
EDIT: Here's my guess, I am on a GPRS network but using only GSM..could it be?
Sualc, I can't answer your question but I have wondered the same myself. I also see the greyed out icons sometimes. I haven't bothered researching it becasue it doesn't seem to be a big deal but I would like to know as well.

Thank you for witnessing the same , I was afraid people could think I had hallucinations.Yeah you're right, compared to dozens of other REAL bugs this subject is really not important, just to know...By the way..I just left my bedroom and went down the stairs and now I've got the standard icon!!Tricky, hum?
Greyed out icons mean that type of connection is available, but not in use. It's white when in use.

Implausible - I have my internet connection APN deliberately mis-set to prevent any data connections at all. I still get both normal and greyed out icons from time to time.
Grey G icon means bad or no gprs signal I think. I have somewhere read about it.
Thanks, anyway there is already a signal strenght indicator near the G..but if you read it somewhere no reason to doubt.
I can confirm I get that grey G icon sometimes... it might be a rendering screen bug too....
i get a E for edge and a g for 3g
It may mean a bad signal but the device polls so infrequently as to make it pointless.
Behavior just observed.....
1 - I had an H (HSDPA) with a grey background.
2 - I connect to the internet and get an H with a white background.
3 - I disconnect from the internet to try and a grey background but it is still white.
4 - I walk over to the elevator (bad signal) to try and get a grey background
5 - The data icon goes from H with white background to G with white background
Conclusion ..... non informative and quite meaningless
I am 90% sure that the grey background means bad signal... When it shows in my device, it happens always in areas that reception is poor.
Not unique to the TD2. I get the same from time to time on my Touch HD. Have mildly wondered but never bothered to research.

It happens to me too, but not very often. It´s not about not being connected, because the white icon is there when there´s no connection.
The GPRS signal being too weak seems like a good explanation to me.

I'm afraid the G icon we're talking about is not among the ones lsted there..so until something "official" comes out could we say that "G greyed icon" = "GPRS band selected but not availabe "?

the G is there, the 2nd reply attached with the picture explains
G(dark color) = GPRS available
G(grey color) = GPRS unavailable.

Mmmm - just noticed this one...
My little square G for GPRS symbol no longer STAYS on the status bar at the top.
It appears as I soft reset, and find a network, but then disapears.
If I click my signal bar gauge however, the G symbol is shown there.
I know they have changed the Signal Status notification box to list Airline mode now, instead of Wireless off...
So is this another new change, or are the rest of you getting the G to stay on?
I ask, because I actually use my XDA2 on Orange UK, unlocked, but before the Upgrade last night, I still got a solid G stay on with Orange.
Thoughts or comments anyone?
I've actually never seen the "G" stay on the bar with mine, and have been thru several different roms, Qtek, I-mate, T-mobile.
It does exactly as you describe. Personally I don't need to see it all the time.
me too, ever since it never stayed on just popped up to indicate that you've connected to gprs but goes away after a while (started with a 1.52.00 rom)
Same goes for me. I always see the G appear at a start up but never have had the G remain on the screen for more than a few seconds.
On my unit after the Aisa update I can confirm the change in wording to "Turn on flight mode" from "Turn wireless off"
Ed
Aha...
I guess I have already sussed it, but can you guys confirm what type of devices and ROM's you had/have.
As i am certain as can be that my XDA2 USED to keep the G symbol on permanent, just like my SmartPhone Orange E200 does now.
But now, after the new UK ROM update, it doesn't stay on.
Now that I know this is by design, and that the initial appearance is to assure you you have a GPRS signal, and that you can check it any time by tapping on the signla bar, I have to say i much prefer this new method of informing you.
I just wanted to check it wasn't an error first - but I can happily send and receive MMS so it must be working fine.
my xda1 with 2002(org rom) dident keep the icon
my xda1 with 2003 dident keep the icon
and my
xda2 (qtek2020)(org rom) dont keep the icon
Does anyone know what the new icons mean?
I am now getting H and R, even though in the same place I used to get a 3G connection.
H is fine I can do everything, but when I am on R I get no internet.

H is HSPDA and R is roaming i believe. HSPDA is the 7mbps speed, so its equivilant to wifi speeds assuming you have an 8+mb line.
I've only encountered those speeds once when I was at the Atlanta airport waiting for my connection to Florida.
Thats what I was thinking.
So I should assume that HSDPA is my 3G connection.
I should have thought of that roaming.
In Aus with telstra I should be hitting 7mbps no probs in the cities with Telstra. Strange about roaming though I have never needed to roam before on anyphone before this update.

If you have no data connection while roaming go into your Setting>Wireless Controls >Mobile Networks then enable Data Roaming ONLY if you dont get charged for it. In the US, T-Mobile doesn't charge for data roaming as long as you're inside the country.

Wow thanks for even remotely offering help to him. How about instead of being an ass about it you can offer some help and mention to search next time?
(SEARCH) top right 3rd to last, has white letters and a white arrow pointing down, has brown background surroundings and it is spelled S.e.a.r.c.h
Ok, then, now what's the million dollar question? CAN WE SWITCH THE H ICON TO 3G?
Where is it located?

Thanks guys but it did use both the search buttom and also manually reading through the last few pages of threads in all 4 sub forums.
So next time F** off, if you want to be like that.
itt was mentioned in the 4million page thread of haykuros previous builds. H means same as 3G in this case- HTC just use H instead of 3G. and yes sometimes the search fxn sux. maybe not a new thread for it but ask in the thread about the actual build.
to replace you need to open update with 7zip, replace the H icons with 3G icons from another build (H icons i think are in system-framework-htcresources.apk if i remember correctly- from old haykuro build- i dont have new one). make sure the 3G icons have same name as wht the H ones did. close update, resign zip and you are right to go and flash it.

Thanks for that mate, it ok I dont mind it being a H as long as I know it is running on the 3G connection.
Hummm... you can do that but you guys are forgetting something. The H build shows G (GPRS), E (EDGE), 3G (UMTS), and H (HSPDA/HSUPA) icons. You could just copy the icons from system/framework/com.htc.rescources.apk/res/drawable and replace the ones in system/framework/framework.res.apk/res/drawable but they would be inaccurate. It would display a H icon where you might actually have UMTS connection. I wish I knew what else should be replaced (probably an extra script or lib file would be also be needed to include all 4 icons from H build.
Hi,
I wonder if anyone experience the same problem like me where the 3G icon sometimes look smaller and nice looking, but sometimes look bigger and ugly.
I have flash my rom with the latest shipped rom which i downloaded from HTC official website, and this problem still unsolved..
I have spb shell v3.0.1 installed in my jade.
Can anyone advise me please...
Thanks in advance.
Vincent
i think what you mean is this:
the icon 3g can change into a larger 3g- a G only- or an E. This happens according to the signal strength you recieve from your network (or so).
However, it is nothing bad. It happens automatically.
Hi Qabooz,
Thanks for your advise.
Cheers.

Actually sometimes, 3G can change to 3G of different graphics, especially when you customise the phcanoverbmp.dll. To understand where the graphics come from, follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441829
Hi Azahidi,
Thanks a lot for your advice!

First post, bit of a lurker here. Just upgraded my XDA2 after (how long?).
So, got the touch HD. And I find it has a [E] or an [H] on the taskbar. I've checked previous posts, and the GPRS is disabled, but I really really dislike the icon being there. The XDA2 didn't have it there, although it also supported GPRS. Is there a reg hack, or a tweak, something I can do to hide the icon? I don't care about the connection, its the icon that's bugging me....?
Or is it that I'm asking the wrong question? Is it the case that if I can see the [G] icon, I must be connected to gprs, and so to hide the icon I just need to kill that connection (something i thought I'd already done)?
The G/E/H/3G icon just shows you what is available, doesn't mean you're connected.
It is possible, i had a taskbar on the diamond, called ahen by sunnyin that had no G/3G/H icon
Not 100% sure on this one, but I don't think you can actually get rid of the icon as that is a WM feature to show you what is available (if you're connected to GPRS/EDGE it will show it on the signal bars). However, what you can do is change the icon which 'G' and 'E' to just be black like the background so you won't be able to see it. Hence the actual icon notification will still be there (taking up space) but you won't see it.
I have the same problem. disabled GPRS and any way of my phone accessing 3G or 2G, but there is still an E in a gray square showing up at the top. This happened after I first installed cooked roms. My guess is that other apps are attempting to access 2G, because another problem linked to this was an error message, ""there is a problem connecting to the gprs service in your registered home network warning", which I've since then fixed (but the E problem remains)
Edit: lol I just realized this thread was years old. but if anybody has a solution, please comment
Hi everyone.
Since upgrading to 1.66, I have noticed something rather annoying and hope someone can provide a solution to fixing it.
When I was on 1.48, the H icon at the top of the screen would always be there. I was effectively connected to the internet all the time, and was able to leave MSN messenger etc open and I'd always be online.
When I upgraded to 1.66, the icon at the top of the screen is always 3G. It only changes to H when I'm actually using the internet. If I open the browser and check out a website, the 3G changes to H and the website begins to load. It changes back to 3G when any internet connectivity is idle.
I can only access the internet when H is displayed, but I want it connected permanently like it was on 1.48.
It's like the phone is disconnecting from the internet when I'm not using the browser. It's not very useful when I need to keep MSN messenger open all day.
Thanks.
It's not disconnected when it says 3G. It simply switches to the slower mode when nothing is being transferred to save resources. As soon as something actually needs to be transferred it goes to H again to get the fastest available speed.

Ah, okay. I can't seem to visit any websites when 3G is displayed though. Perhaps that could be to do with my operator settings or something?
i have had the same problem since installing the sms patches.... i have since hard reset to remove the patch... and testing it now... it is very anoying because it keeps my msn disconnected...
I'm using Dutty's 1.5 (it's a great ROM!) with a 2.07 radio and I've got the same problem..
When it says 3G, nothing seems to come through.. when it changes to H, the webpage starts loading...
Does anyone have a fix to make it not switch back and forth between H and 3G? It gets frustrating because it often takes 1 or 2 seconds to switch between the modes....

Let us know how to you get on because I need this fixed.
My MSN stays connected fine in 3G. Push email works perfect too.
The icons only show the available type of signal.
They don't mean you are connected.
When you do connect by opening an app that uses the appropriate signal then the icon changes to show the signal that you are connected with.
If H is not available in a particular area then it will stay on 3G and if that's not available then G with show.
Hey guys. I'm on my 4th HD2 handset now since upgrading my vodafone contract one month ago. First two handsets had similar probs as allot of you have had, i.e sms not working, alarm not working etc etc. I upgraded to the 1.66 rom when i got my 3rd handset from phones4u. I then started getting the same issues as you just described- internet only profficiently working when H coverage is active. When it goes below that then nothing happens at all. I returned the handset today and got a new one. This one already had the 1.66 Rom update installed and sure enough, had the same internet issues. I started fiddling with settings and changed the band setting from 'auto' to 'WCDMA'. ( just trial and error, so senior members please chime in if i have given bad advise!) This seems to keep the network coverage constantly in H and since changing it several hours ago i have not had any issues.
Start> Settings>Wireless controls>Phone>Band> Change Auto to WCDMA
Give it a go!

Wouldnt that make the phone stick to the 3G/HSDPA/WCDMA band only and cause the phone to have no reception around certain areas that still operate on 2G GSM?
Exact.
I rather tend to do the opposite for that reason if I have trouble (sometimes you're in areas where 3G reception is low and it keeps switching between 3G and EDGE all the time), I'll force EDGE only. It's slower, but at least the connection is constant.
When at work mine fights bewteen 3g and h and both are like 1 bar signals, i'd rather disable both when at work as G is full signal.
Is there a way?
