Tmobile G1/Warrenty - G1 General

So how does it work? If you say you lost your g1, what would be the processes? Like i know you have to file a claim through the insurance company with a deductible but not knowledgeable of anything after that? Ive had bad experiences with my MDA (HTC WIZARD) because i dropped it in the toilet. So i just want to be informed? What about those people who fake it and say they lost it but really have it?

Insurance for Cingular 8525

Hi,
Cingular will not insure this. Anybody can recommend a 3rd party insurance to cover this phone. Any experience in dealing with them as far as fast claims and other info is most welcome.

You're good for one year as far as Cingular warranty is concerned.
The only reason I'm get from phones from a carrier.
I've had three replacement HP6515 and one replacement 8125.
PDA phones just have problems, screen alignment, buttons not working, freezing, stuck headphone tips e.g.
Cingular told me the same thing. I believe this is new. They used to insure smartphones, but now they are not. I better be careful with my full priced 8525!!
cingular has never carried insurance on their smartphone, i remember not being able to get one for my moto mpx220. There is a 1 year warranty period but that only covers defects... HOWEVER there is a website that i know of and they are trustworthy that will sell sperate insurance on mobile devices, phones/laptops, etc..

Really? It must of been Sprint and Verizon only then. I know that for sure. They charge ~$6 per month for insurance. I guess Cingular never did that. I have recently switched back.

i have been with cingular since 2000 (swbell wireless back then) and they have never offered insurance for high end phones.. which i think is lame.. they only offer insurance on your low end phones and its like $4 a month. why in the hell would i want insurance on a $100 phone then pay $50 for a deductable.. doesnt make sense. your only options is a 3rd party, i know some homeowners insurance will cover it, but then you are talking an even higher deductable..
i havent personally used safeware.com but read some really good reviews on them somewhere. And i do plan on using them one of these days..

They were pokey, and I had to call them constantly to get updates, but they did do what they said they would. So I'll keep my insurance with them..
Pick up my 8525 tomorrow.. I dunno why, but it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack when it comes to the 8525 in the detroit area..

bout time you come join us over here Skot.. and from what i understand most retail outlets are hard to come by the 8525, i ordered mine online, was the easiest for me
Yeah, I've been without my PDA phone for far too long. Can any of you guys imagine getting stuck with using a bloody Motorola C139 for a month and a half? For a temporary use for phone, it's great, but long term use, no thanks..
I'm not surprised that the retails stores are having a hard time getting them. What I'm wondering is if it's a supply not meeting the demand problem, or online resalers just happened to be first in line in getting them.. I guess I was lucky.. The third store I called had one, and it was their last one. My buddy who bought one spent a Saturday calling like 10 different stores or something, no luck. Then he ended up calling a shop just south of where I live and managed to get one.. He loves it..
So, now, I can't wait to get it. I'm ready to start hacking it to bits the best I can.. And maybe this one I won't drop and break.

HTC the company gives u a 1 year warrenty on products as long as it is not "ur fault" PDA fones have alot of problems, most can be fixed with help from these forums alot can't be. I've had my 8125 7 months now and i just needed it to get replaced. I had these problems:
Screen alignment : (fixed by a patch of loosening screws on the back of the screen)
Stylus not staying in: (placing a towel ontop of the unit and putting alot of weight but not enuf to break the unit on it for overnight)
Unreponsive keys on the keyboard: ( i just got used to dealing wit em )
Touch screen gives out: (time for replacement)
Called up the number supplied by a cingular representative and they ensured me of HTC's warrently sent me a replacement fone and everything with no questions asked accept about my account and the IMEI number and some confirmation things you need to do on the fone. The only thing I didnt like about the replacement fone is that it didnt come with a battery or new battery case cover.

that sounds like cingular's warranty by mail (HTC wouldnt have asked about your account, maybe only proof of purchase). Yes the 1yr warranty is great if its not your fault.. but what do you do if it is your fault? That is what we are covering on this thread. Most cell providers offer some kind of insurance on the cheaper "dumb" phones but not the expensive smart phones (this still dont make sense to me). So in order to insure your device you need to seek a 3rd party such as safeware. They will also fix your phone or send you a check in the event your phone is damaged past the 1 year manufacturer warranty..

yes shogun your right, cingular pointed me to www.safeware.com
they have insurance there for the PDA fones but its quite expensive and i frankly think it isnt worth it at all.
im not sure how much it is now but it was like $25 deposit and if your fone is stolen you gatta pay some outrageous fee of like 250-350 dollars depending on the device instead of the norm 50 bucks.
i dunno how much it is now i havent bothered looking. heres a website tho since i kno thats what u lookin for. hope it helps.

Sorry, but for some poeple, it's worth it. I paid $60 a year for my 8125. Not even six months after taking out the policy, I broke my 8125 beyond repair. They gave me a check for $500 (as that's what I was insured up to when I crated the policy). Okay, sure, it took a little while, but considering I only spend $60 to replace it, it was worth it.
Eventually, when I become rich and can afford to drop $500 to replace my phone without thinking twice, it won't be a problem (hell, even if I were rich, $500 phone, $60 per year, it gets destroyed, I ultimately only end up paying $60 to replace it).. Until then, I like having that kind of protection that Cingular doesn't offer.
One of the claims to fame for Safeware is that there's no deductible, and that they cover your device.
I was thinking that someone had mentioned another site besides safeware.com in this thread, but now i don't see it. Was I seeing things or did someone edit their post?
I too had my 8125 insured with safeware and switched mid-year to my 8525 when I upgraded, but if you go to the safeware.com site now you won't find a selection for a PDA device like they used to have. I wonder if they are no longer offering new policies on equipment like ours? I thought the cost was reasonable for the coverage provided (about $60-70) for a year, but it would be a shame if they aren't offering insurance products any longer on PDA devices.

better than my homeowners could do. better than lockline (cingular) because no deductible. covers memory card too.

I just got my TYTN II and its great. Considering the amount i paid for the phone, and the fact that i bought it because i broke the screen on my 8525, im thinking i should get insurance for it.
Does anyone have insurance for the phone? If so how much does it cost? Have you replaced a phone with them before? Any recommendations would be great! Thanks.

Well you can get your device insured for $100-$200 I believe. That covers all drop and falls. Why dont you just call HTC and lie to them? It worked with me 100%. They sent me a brand new replacement ^_^

i contacted safeware to see if they would offer insurance for this phone... when i emailed them, i gave all the known names for the device, kiaser, tytn II, 8925 (TILT), etc.... and the response i got was scary.. see if you can catch the scary part!

I paid $829 for my TyTN II, SquareTrade's quote is $213.99 for 3 Years with ADP (accidental drop and spill coverage). I've never insured a phone and am now on the fence. I like this phone as it's just about perfect. I can't think of what model would make me jump in the next 12/24 months, well, if it was slightly thinner with a bigger Transreflective-VGA screen I'd go again

Really? I have two PDAs insured with them (the 8525 and 8125). Cost me about $60 a year for $500 coverage on each phone. Recently, I added my Tilt to the account. Haven't yet heard from them. I added the new phone online at their web site. I hope they haven't dropped this service.

WTB: 8525

Does anybody have an 8525 for sale? As long as it's not majorly damaged or missing anything and nothing is internally damaged; I'm interested. If you have Corporate access or any way to get a refurbed phone let me know and I'll buy that one off of you, I heard from the Corporate it's 99$ for a refurb, that's no problem at all and with ease I'd send that and more for just getting it for me. Let me know if you have anything you can do as my 8525 loses services so inconsistently I never know if I'll have a phone to use for the day.

[Q] Question about general insurance terms.

Two quick questions about the insurance terms an conditions.
1. If you report it stolen or lost or whatever, do they send you a brand new phone after you pay the deductible or is it a refurbbed one?
2. If report it lost and order a new one, and you find the lost one(or you never actually lost it) do they deactivate the original one somehow?..or track it somehow?....or do they just accept your deductible and let you do whatever you want with them?
They send you what they have in stock at the moment. The longer a phone has been out the more likely you are to get a refurbished one.
The insurance company can't track it or do anything with it, you can do what you want with it and T-mobile won't care.
I advise reporting it lost, if you say it's stolen you have to submit to them a police report.

I'm not sure but I'd be surprised if T-Mobile didn't blacklist lost /stolen phones.

I have not personally, but I worked at T-mobile up until a couple of weeks ago.
Your insurance isn't through t-mobile, so they don't care if you now have another one all of the sudden. Your insurance will only allow two phone replacements in a year because they can't actually blacklist or stop the phones.

Wrong! The phones can be blacklisted. Honestly if you do find its best to report it BC if you start using that old one or sell it then asurion can and will prosecute for insurance fraud.

How would Ausrion even know if you sold it?
I mean, I could understand you finding the phone and using it again..cause maybe that could be tracked. (Maybe.)
But what could be done about selling it? That makes no sense.
Unless you try to sell it by posting "Selling my supposedly lost phone" on the TMobile forums.

I am not sure what they actually do, but in theory it's pretty easy.
You claim the phone is lost
TMobile blacklists the phone's IMEI
Someone tries to register the phone on the TMobile network
TMobile and/or Asurion go after the account holder for the associated SIM
They show they bought it from you
No profit

The phone can be unlocked to use on any provider.
So...wouldn't selling it as an unlocked phone give you a better chance?
And you could sell it to a friend and have them say they bought it from off the internet or at a pawn shop or anything.
I just don't think it's that precise. (Who knows maybe it is.)
Anyway. I'm not trying to prove there's ways around it. I just wanted to understand the statement better.
And is blacklisting a phone's IMEI a new thing? Cause I've had phones stolen in the past that ended being in use by other people. Nothing ever happened there. (And I know that because I found out who stole the phone.)

The insurance companies are NOT as dumb as you think they are. Insurance fraud is a booming business and companies are always looking to minimize their losses against fraud.
I know this because one of my specialty fields includes loss prevention and fraud. They can and will blacklist your IMEI number and despite your noble efforts to sell to a friend who magically ends up buying that very same phone off craigslist [unbeknownst to you ] will get you in trouble.
Do the smart thing and heed the advice given here by people who know. Don't try to fool businesses or people who have been around the block way longer than your ingenious plan of trying to net an extra phone.
You're better off slipping in the Taco Bell parking lot and claiming an injury.

Asurion watches your account and tracks people down if they see someone you talk/text has the imei of your "lost" phone. Trust me don't lie to insurance companies
But if you sell it on Cl and report it lost at a bar...? What can they prove?

I'm not advocating fraud, but last time I checked the two big US GSM providers (AT&T and T-Mobile) don't utilize an IMEI blacklist. I checked because I had a phone stolen from me and I asked T-Mobile to blacklist the IMEI and they told me that they can't (or won't) do that. They said the best they could do was deactivate the SIM card to prevent the thief from running up my bill. After doing some digging, I discovered reports of many AT&T customers with the same experience.

that is absolutely true. USA gsm carriers have 0 interest in blacklisting for obvious reasons = more money in their pocket. You get to buy a new phone for more money and whoever steals/find the phone gets to pay the company even more money.
I have no idea what insurance companies will do, though, but I've reported a lost phone, which I'm sure someone is still using, got a replacement and never heard word of it being tracked down or something.
Best advice I have is call assurion and ask if, in case your phone gets lost, if they'll do anything to retrieve it. My guess would be a resounding NO unless you have a police report, a subpoena and a lot of time to waste on this.

Someone on ebay has an HD2 for sale for a good price that he claimed insurance on. I was thinking of buying it. Does anyone know if it'll work if I buy it?

my mystic ball tells me that he claimed insurance on it for a reason....
i would ask for the imei # & then call htc to see if it has any warranty still on it. if it does you could buy it & hope that what ever is wrong with it will be covered under the warranty but you might be buying a very expensive paper weight. I bought mine on ebay & made sure it was still under warranty before buying it & then shipped it out to htc for repair. they replaced my phone & shipped it back 2 me 4 free. i only had to pay for the shipping there.
His description says he only did it to get another phone and that its gauranteed working. But I'm wondering if T-Mobile would care about that and block your phone?
my only concern would be it having a bad esn which shouldnt be likely since he said he did the swap himself. normally that happens when you try 2 sell a stolen phone. i would call t-mobile with the esn# to see if its bad or not.
anytime you do an exchange through t-mobile you have 2 mail back the phone thats not working or you will get a huge restocking fee = to the phones price unless it was an upgrade which i think you then can keep your old phone.
I would check the completed auctions on ebay, its on the left hand side of the page. price what the htc hd2 has sold for & then if you can get it for cheaper then the average price i would go ahead & buy it. if you cant get it working on t-mobiles network then you can always resell it on ebay & since you did your homework on how much you can expect 2 sell it 4 you wont be out any/a lot of money. i wouldnt think that it would be an issue but i also wouldnt want to give you info on something im not 100% on, best bet would be to call.
I didn't know ESN's applied to phones that use sim cards.
So if the ESN is bad then it might not work and it would just be a paper weight?
Would applying a new OS such as android fix this at all and is the ESN changeable?

As I was writing that I was wondering it myself. Lol. I looked online at a few places and your right, t-mobile is not affected by bad esn #'s. I was with verizon till just last year so thats where I was gathering my info from, so I'm really sorry about that.
It seems as though everything should be fine then. Like I said, if you can get a good deal on it & think you'd be able to resell it around the price you paid then there wouldnt be as much risk because you'll be able to get your money back if for whatever reason you no longer like/want the phone. I don't like 2 tell ppl what they should do with they're hard earned money but as a pt seller on eBay myself I feel that papal/ebay buyer protection would have you covered if something was listed wrong or if it dont live up to the description he put in his listing.

cakinlife there are 2 options you can do. 1) As htccraze said yes you might want to call htc if it is still cover under warranty. 2) The HTC HD2 could be use under another network if the phone is unlcoked.
I would be suprised if there was no sting in the tail here
Insurance is not used just to get a new phone (most insurance phones are refurbs anyway) and the only reason it would be replaced without being sent in for repair/exchange would be if its reported lost/stolen, then the owner got it back (or it was not lost anyway)

If the IMEI is blacklisted, you need to provide proof of ownersip to unlock it (if you are not the original owner) in the UK that is

IMSI for the SIM
