I have had two different HTC Fuze devices now and have noticed that the WiFi performance seems to be rather slow. I have a 54mbps wireless network setup I believe (I use wired Gigabit ethernet for my PCs, WHS & Media Streamer), yet the only difference in speeds I notice between my WiFi network and AT&T's 3G seem to be better latency on WiFi. I have tried all 3 different WiFi settings in Windows Mobile, Performance/Balanced/BatterySave, and they don't seem to make much difference.
Now, as far as Opera Mobile goes, the poor speed can probably be attributed to the browser's rendering engine and the device's hardware, but my real complaint here is with the RSS reader I use, Spb Insight. I have 58 feeds set up, and it took it about 30-35 minutes to download 42.7~ MB of data over my WiFi network. I realize this isn't too bad, all things considered, but my Comcast cable connection is 20 mbps downlink, and if I were to download 42 megs of data on my desktop PC, we'd be looking at around 21 seconds (max transfer of ~2.11 MB/sec, tested on GigaNews USENET servers).
So my question is, assuming the bottleneck isn't the Spb Insight RSS Reader software, which I don't think it is, are there any registry changes/hacks or software I can use to get a bit better speed out of the Fuze's WiFi radio? I am running the stock AT&T ROM with the workaround that bypasses the AT&T BloatWare Install and my radio is stock also. I did a few forum searches and didn't come up with much of anything, and nothing Fuze related.
Is anyone else noticing slower-than-expected/desired WiFi speeds on their Fuze?
-- As an aside, I noted earlier I have a Media Streamer box - basically a dedicated small Shuttle brand PC box that I stuck a dual-core Celeron into that's only function is to transcode & stream videos via the Orb Software. I used a Seinfeld episode xvid @ 576x432 resolution that plays near-perfect, a frame-skip here and there (and looks gorgeous, I might add) on the Fuze using CorePlayer v1.2.5, but when I stream those same videos off my streamer box (transcoded into WMV) using Orb over WiFi, they're nearly unwatchable from all the hiccups and audio sync issues. I haven't even bothered trying it using 3G, since it can't even manage it over wireless. These videos streamed without any issue to my Archos 5 60GB Internet Media Tablet and Nokia N810 IT, both devices I've since sold, as the HTC Fuze replaces both without much issue, although the 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 + Graphics Chip in the Archos was a monster, eating webpages for breakfast & outputting 720p video to HDTV with nary a frameskip to be seen. They need to get those Cortex procs into mobile phones ASAP.
In any case, it seems like the WiFi is hindering me in this regard as well and I'd very much like to get this all ironed out so I can rest easy knowing my Fuze does everything I want it to. Sorry for the long-winded post, and a big thank you to all the contributors here for the amazing wealth of knowledge on these forums.
Try to change your radio stack, check for WLAN setup utilities to lock your transfer speed at 54 and try to make a WiFi connection with your PC to make sure it is not your router who makes lags
I noticed that the range of the Fuze's wi-fi is very limited. Anyone else notice this??
Having only used the Sprint TP, I didn't notice any specific issues with WiFi. Have you verified that all of the connection settings are properly configured? (wifi connects to internet instead of work network and your applications are set to use 'the internet' instead of 'MEdia Net') Then again, the stock Fuze ROM could very well just suck as most ATT HTC ROMs usually do
Ok, I could never get the "internet sharing" to work on x1 with my friends laptop cause i dont have the drivers...so always used Wifirouter.
I find it a little slow, but it works and does work well. However, I read that the x1 supports "HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps" ...but i dont get speeds like that.
If somebody has the files required for connecting the x1 to a laptop and use internet sharing instead of wifirouter...can you upload and post it here? I will then keep them on my storage card for safe keeping.
Also, how do you find internet sharing? Is there any difference in speed compared to wifirouter?

I think HSDPA is simply network dependent -when its there you get an H symbol on your signal strength (taskbar) ...when its not there you get the next best thing (3G) and if that's not available you're stuck with plain old slow GPRS (G)
Internet sharing works well for me (obviously depends on the connection you have on the X1 -as above) ...have not used wifirouter so can't say how they compare
7.2 Mbps is theoretical maximum. Your provider is not obliged to provide you with this speed. I get about 1 Mbps for download.
Actually you don't need special drivers for the X1 in order to use tethering. Just connect the X1 to a PC using an USB cable and start the "Internet Sharing" Application on the Xperia. Within the application select "USB Connection" and choose your preconfigured ISP connection profile - é voilà. You will notice that the Xperia appears as a network adapter on the PC. I use that a lot.
Regarding the speed: It really depends on your mobile network. Though my network provider (Vodafone Germany) has some spots where 7,2 MBit/s should be available, I have never had such fast download rates - it's more like 2-3 MBit/s which is still quite okay for me. And even if the network would be capable of such fast transfer rates, the speed will be reduced by the more clients use the same cell.
I also read somewhere (guess it was on SE offical site) that using HSDPA and HSUPA together will limit the download speed to 3,6 MBit/s. So you might want to switch HSUPA off and use HSDPA only - at least it's worth a try if you're sure that your operator provides such fast transfer rates. I always have both switched on.
Nice, 2-3mbps is a lot faster than i was getting...i guess i will need to try this out.
Regarding my friends laptop, maybe i should have said its win xp but it doesnt have active sync or any x1 soft installed...so maybe thats why its looks for the drivers?

I've used my X1 on a few machines with ICS, drivers have always installed automatically (Generic NDIS I think it says), and that's on XP, Vista and Windows 7. No setting up with activesync etc, just plug in and start ICS.
I've started using WMwifirouter now though as it's easier, I don't carry a USB cable with me all the time, and you never know when it'll come in useful!

How is the battery consumption when using WMWifiRouter, e.g. how long does the battery last? I can imagine this is the worst use-case at all, because you have WiFi active and HSDPA in parallel.
The big advantage when using an USB connection is that the battery is charging while it's connected, though the WiFi method is much more comfortable and flexible.
you do know that 7.2Mbps mega bits per sec? and not megabytes.

Actually you do not need a cable, you can have the phone to act as a bluetooth modem through the internet connection sharing , no drivers required what so ever, you will need to pair your phone with the laptop first make sure, that Bluetooth PAN client is checked on the laptop, then start the internet connection sharing on the phone and make sure that you are using bluetooth PAN, and you will have instant access on your laptop, No drivers, No cables
assuming the laptop has bluetooth
wifi is much more standard, so it's handy to have.
The best part here is non of these mrthods are mutually exclusive, so you can use whichever is best for the situation. USB is handy as ICS does drain power, using wifi for it makes my X1 extremely warm...

Yes, thats what comes up...but it wont auto install. Tried it on three laptops and they all wont work haha. I rebuilt the machines/laptops so even tho all drivers are installed (device manager)...maybe i left some out.
I was hoping somebody on the forum would know where i can find these drivers?

Generic NDIS is one of the system files in windows found under system32, windows will not boot even in safe mode if these drivers are not loaded, ICS works fine as far as i can tell with no extra drivers on any windows XP or later

Ive owned my x1 for about 6months, I have unlimited pda data plan but not tethering plan with my carrier. For some reason I can teather my x1 to my eeePC 901 via USB,but not BT,and get internet when Im not in a wifi spot. It does give me the BT PAN option and my devices are paired but cant get internet connection, only thru USB. Ive tried this multi times for over a month now and have not been charged any data usage or overage on my bill.
I was about to do the r3a update, but was wondering if there was any ninja fixes in this update. Id hate to lose this ability just for a little faster performance.

You DO need ActiveSync to be installed before you can use your X1 for ICS.
I tested it yesterday on my Windows XP SP3 laptop: When you connect your WM6 mobile with the ICS program running on it, WinXP demands for a plain Generic NDIS driver but won't find a suitable one. But during ActiveSync installation (version 4.5 worked for me), the USB drivers are updated, and afterwards my X1 got recognized as a "Windows Mobile Internet Connection Sharing Device" or something like that.
ActiveSync is not active during ICS session, but its prior installation is mandatory for it to work.

I've already known WM Wifirouter. It's very good SW. The Xperia has a fascinating WLAN antenna. I can have the phone in my cellar (Concrete) and I have GOOD SIGNAL on the first floor... I think it's just as good as a powerful WLAN Router, or even better... Wonderful!

Yhea i tried it its an nice software. it works nice with windows but i'm using linux and then the problems showed up. i couldn't make any connection with a linux machine.
i'm traviling a lot and would like to share internet with my laptop(linux) but nothing works even this one didn't work. thnx for the info JKingDev

It Works Great I used it for a while on my xperia. making connection wasn't hard either. but for me the connection looked a little bit slow. I even connected three laptops to my xperia just for fun but i wouldn't do that the connection is just tooooooo slow

And the resolution is not a problem? Cuz in the thread it says VGA.
Not clear from input above as to which working app people are referring to.
I tried both on my Xperia.
HTC WiFi Router (freeware) did not work, installs ok, screens fine, but laptop could not see the wireless router. Seems like there are a lot of similar problems elsewhere with this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538874
WM WiFi Router ($29), trial version, worked first time, seems to have a lot more connection options.

As above, just wifi. Use internet connection sharing for USB or bluetooth.
I have a problem with this program, i have an internet connection on my Computer and when i connect my X1 to it using USB, the internet connection is shared to the X1, then i open WMWIFI , use USB-WIFI connection, it creates the wifi access point and i can connect to it using other computers but no internet access and after 2 mints i get an erroe msg on my X1 saying , cant get server assigned Ip, try again later or go to network and assign one?

When I first bought the touch HD I was thinking how good it would be to have this phone while having wifi with the lack of 3g for tmobile in the us, but it turns out that the wifi acutally suck! I have a iPod touch 2g And the wifi works great with blazing speed. I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod. I been very disappoint with this phone for simple fact that this phone recieves wifi poorly. Anyone can help me out with this problem would be much appreciated because despite the wifi problem I love the phone cause the 3.8 screen is so damn sexual lol.

Try to set wifi power options to performance. Also, Enabling G Mode (with SKTools is one of the ways) helps improve speed.
Thanks for the info but it might be the lack of range of my router cause I have been on my wifi with the phone before but I get disconnected frequently and most the time it doesn't even show up or detect it but I don't have that problem with the iPod. With iPod I seem to get wifi everywhere. I'm starting to believe the iPod is better might sell it and get a iPhone or maybe a hero but don't know if I'm willing to spend 600+ on another phone

My wifi connects well to open, WEP, and WPA connections. I tried numerous access points (at least 30), even 802.11n APs in mixed g mode. It even connects to Apple Airport (802.11g). The connection is stable both on power saving and best performance, but I think I get much better speeds on average with best performance.
Its wifi range is much better than my little HP 613 smartphone, but again worse than my notebook. I get 54Mbit connection with signal quality of about 50% at 10 meters through a wall and then it automatically finds another channel on another AP. It roams (handover) APs better than some Lenovo r61 laptops around!
But I am not satisfied with its speed (even on best performance) - it finishes copying a 700MB file on a 54 Mbit connection in 30-40 minutes using total commander and saving on storage card. That means average speed is around 300-400KB/s - laptop does the same (same AP, same file, same network settings) at 1.6-1.8 MB/s in around 7 minutes.
I also noticed that saving on storage card is slighty faster than into the main memory...
I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod.

Hmm, are you sure that you don't compare two different situations ? Did you also try connecting to Wifi with your iPod while already being connected with your Blackstone ?
My personal experience shows me that the Touch HD seems to have a better radio than the iPhone 3G. Have you upgraded to the latest Blackstone stock ROM and radio available on the HTC website or XDA Devs ? Whether or not the radio also affects Wifi unfortunately I don't know.
Moreover, use WifiMonster to monitor the strength of the signal, it'll help you discover the best spots for using Wifi. I even receive Wifi signals from the neighbors' houses in my own house (not speaking about appartments), of course that always depends on the room !
BTW I'm pretty sure that a Hero won't solve your problem, it's the same old hardware specs as on the Blackstone.
The Wifi on my device works perfectly and i have had no issues at all with signal or quality. I have had more problems with my ipod than the HTC, are you sure its not the WIFI AP you are trying to connect to? Also are you using stock rom or custom?
I'm using the Energy ROM. I'm assume its my wifi signal its very weak and my touch hd cant seem to detect it. With my ipod i shows up and i can connect to it...will updating the radio make a difference?
I came across a startling discovery the other day regarding the Touch HD wifi. I was also having issues at home with weak wifi signal. I didn’t seem to have this problem with public access hot spots.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse connected to my computer and very rarely turn that computer off. I found that when my computer was off I would get a rock solid connection to my home wifi, but when the computer was on it would drop in and out. I narrowed it down to the wireless mouse was interfering with the Touch HD wifi connection.
I tried all different channels on my router, but as long as the Logitech mouse was plugged it I would get wifi dropouts. But as soon as I unplugged the mouse and the radio dongle, I wouldn’t have any problems with the Touch HD wifi.
I can’t comment if this is your issue, but something might be interfering in the 2.4Ghz with wifi.

As Poison Wolf correctly pointed out, other household items can interfere with the wireless frequency. Try changing the channel that's being used to transmit from your box (This will involve changing some settings on your wireless router so do some research before you fiddle around with it) I have had to do this before and can confirm it can make a massive difference.

Everybody has this problem because the card seems not capable of more speed.
But it seems nearly nobody cares.

Hmm, interesting. The only reasoning I can think of is that perhaps there's a limiting factor in order to reduce the heat or something? I don't see why they would cap the speeds.

What if it is capable of connecting at 54 Mbit, but can actually do only 11 Mbit? Nice trick. I hope it is just a bad idea.

i have created a hotspot but it always hangs
anyway of speeding this up, on my tablet device its a lot faster and doesnt hang, so im guessing it could be an issue with my macbook 2013 retina 13' or is there something else i can try?

This makes no f:ing sense.
Try USB tethering, I think the WiFi chip in the z3c is **** and can't handle tethering at full speed. Install HoRNDIS for your Mac to enable USB tether.
Im on t-mobile here in USA.I tether to me Sony laptop and me ps4 streaming fifa at the same time zero issues

I often use the WiFi hotspot on my Z3C with my Macbook Air with no slow downs in speed. I do not tether it though.
Probably depends more on the speed or maybe I have a faulty unit. My LTE reaches around 50-60 Mbps when I use the WiFi hotspot it drops to 20-25 Mbps with both my Mac and PC. When I use the USB tether I get full speed.
