Hi, sorry if this has been asked, but I'm a follower of the entire Nexus One forum, and could not find it.
It drive me nuts I cannot find how to set synchronization for the Gmail account. I want to have it check for mail every 15 or 30 minutes, and not continuously as how it looks is happening now. I think this is one of the reasons my battery drains so fast in standby.
Is this possible? ( I almost swear I saw it once, maybe at initial setup of the Nexus), or it's just my ex WinMo thinking?
Regards,
Alin.
As far as I know Gmail is push, no?
I need the answer too, but it seems that it is pushed mail.. it draws the battery quickly.
I leave my sync on and don't seem to have any significant battery life problems... I mostly leave my phone in 2g mode though, activating 3g/wifi when I actually want to do something.
I charge once a day when I am sleeping usually, but it seems fine to me.
Someone please correct me if Im wrong.
Im under the impression that Push email allows Gmail to stay completely idle until a wireless msg is sent and activates the updating process.
Thuse greatly reducing battery since it only has to check when told to instead of periodically.
Unless of course your constantly getting emails in which case it may be ALWAYS being told to check.
Guys, how long does the N1 need have to last. I life in an area where I can charge the N1 every night while I'm sleeping. It is set to Autosync with GMail and I use it quite a lot, maybe around 40-60 min. Internet and a few minutes phone and a few SMS and (at least now to get used to my new toy) a lot of playing around and about 30 min MP3 a day. It's empty when I go to bed but who cares? I got power beside my bed and do charge it while I sleep. That's how it should be, or? If I'm away and maybe don't have a power grid (where the heck is this today, in the middle of a dessert or rainforrest?!) and need more than a day than I would switch off the Internet and syncing and put down to display brightness.

The topic has less to do with how long the battery has to last and more about how do you change the GMail app to poll for new mail rather than relying on push. Mail sent to GMail account is by no means urgent and I for one don't want to drain my battery for a feature that I do not need.
For those that are skeptical that push technology drains the battery - the following is a quote from GMail's blog regarding the GMail app for WinMo (sorry I can't post the link due to user restriction): "Once you're set up, new messages are normally pushed to your phone within seconds. While this type of speed is pretty awesome, push connections tend to use more power than fetching at intervals, so don't be surprised if your battery life isn't quite what it used to be."
Anyways, I haven't found a way to change the GMail application to a poll model rather than push so as an alternative I've setup K9-Mail against my GMail account and have it poll on a regular interval and disabled the GMail application altogether.
So you want your Gmail account to update at a predifined interval (like every hour?)?
This is simple: Open up the Email App (NOT Gmail), and enter your full gmail account ([email protected]) and password. It will set up your Gmail account in the Email app. In this app press Menu > Account Settings, and set the email check frequency to your liking. You can also set other options like delete emails from the server when you delete them on the Email App.
In this way you will use the Email app to check emails, meaning you can turn auto-sync off and save battery.
You could also sync your email account once. Then turn off sync. And manually sync your email anytime you want to check for new mail. Since it's not "urgent" as you said.
Or do as melterx pointed out.
Thanks guys for all solutions provided. I'll test them out and see what's happening
Answering to the guy who mentioned about how long should battery last, well, I'm simply not used to charge my phone daily. I had Touch HD before the N1, and with same usage (phone calls, gmail sync, internet) I had almost 3 days with a full charge.
Well, I'm still blaming the "new phone" factor for my battery draining problem, and I mean by this that I'm simply using it too much compared to a normal, "already used to it", usage.
But again, there are other topics for battery usage, so let's keep this only for email sync options
turn off auto-sync. when you want it to fire up, fire it up, then shut it down again. i went all day today, and ran less than half the battery off, because it wasn't polling over and over and over...
I'm not sure how much push drains the battery. One of my Gmail accounts is a work account. I have it and my personal email on push. Went for 10 hours, got about 40-45 emails with several calls and numerous text messages and still went down to 57%. I do have my phone on 3G most of the day(gotta love Atlanta).
Hi guys,
Just want to confirm with you that alarm doesn't work when phone is off. To me this is so stupid that I can't believe this is called "smart" phone. How come my prehistoric Nokia can do that?
It's so annoying to keep phone on all night for absolutely no reason, just for a sake of having alarm buzz in about 8 hours. Is this the same case with Android and iPhone?
Should your computer check for emails when it's turned off?
This is why android has deep sleep.
Sent from my x10, rocking Wolf's 2.3.3 + DooMKernel, overclocked to 1.2 GHz...
It depends what you mean by 'off'. If you mean a single short press of the power button (which actually puts the phone in Sleep mode), then, at least on my LGQ, the alarm goes off as I would expect. No probs.
If, however, you mean powered down via a long press of the power key and the display of the 'Goodbye' message, then you are truly turning off all functions of the phone and yes, the alarms would be shut off as well.
If you are putting the phone in sleep mode and the alarms are not working, I would try a soft reset of the phone, and if that doesn't fix it, maybe try a full reset then slowing adding applications to see if one is interfering with the alarm function.

Smart phones are not meant to be turned off. The standby mode is for putting the phone to sleep, all apps go into dormant so that very little power is needed to keep the phone and messaging system functioning. If you do not want to be bothered at night by phone calls and messaging, then put the phone on silent (no sound, no vibration). The clock and alarm will still functions, and even though you put the phone into silent mode, the phone is smart enough to still sound the alarm to wake you up. I hope that this will help you.
Yup, by "off" I meant turning the phone off with long press. I'm aware I can turn phone to silent and still have alarm work but that's not convenient because I have to do reverse in the morning. Second, and more important is that while it's on the stand by phone is still checking towers for signal, waiting for a phone call, wifi is still working and phone is checking emails, etc. It's just completely unnecessary battery drain just for a privilege of having alarm sound in the morning.
My old Nokia would sound alarm when it's off and ask me if I want to turn the phone on so I was expecting the same from much smarter phone.
Does anyone know if Android or iPhone work the same way? Anyways, I'll check tomorrow morning with my colleagues. I'm eager to learn if this is WP behavior only because then I could expect update to solve the problem.

What you are describing seems to be a function of just Nokia phone, I have never seen this on any phone that I have. You are wrong about standby, it uses very little battery and all data are shut down. I have an android phone and off is off just like this LG quantum. I believe iPhone is the same. Like I said smart phone are not meant to be turned off.
@Otnos, I believe you are wrong about the stand-by. When my phone is on the stand-by (not off) I can clearly hear when email arrives on my Gmail account which means he's listening WiFi and checking emails while in stand-by. He's of course also waiting for call and sms so phone is draining battery for no reason. Also, if you set your phone to wireless sync with your laptop or desktop, and if happens they are on, phone will start syncing files even when it's in the stand-by.
I just check with colleague who has Blackberry. He set alarm at 10:47 and when he was powering off his phone he got message "Next “ON” time is 10:47am". I would say that's smart, that's how smart phone should behave.
Edit: Since I have data plan maybe my phone was checking email over 3G, not wifi.
Edit2: There is a feature request for this so if you would like to see this please vote here!

Actually, I suspect your Blackberry friend is also putting their phone in 'standby' mode, since power off means 'power is off' -- nothing is working any more, not even the alarms, etc.
You are right, the radios are still on during standby mode, but at a very low power consumption. If you truly do want to preserve battery by turning off the phone at night, the other option might be an inexpensive alarm clock..

i confirm that many old samsung phones that i had and the very recent samsung star S5230 can do that..specifically you could turn your phone off and the phone was automatically turned on from the alarm..you could snooze or dismiss..i miss that feature too..
the reason is that my battery last longer when i charge my phone while is off..

quite a few nokias do that and even a few LGs but I have yet to meet a Widows phone that would do that.
Shut down means a total shutdown. If alarm rings then there is something going on in background and it's not a true shutdown.
y don't you put your cellphone to offline & battery saver mode !
Thats the way it should be. How would you like if you shut down your phone & it rings in the middle of a meeting or an exam?!
Or when you are hiding in a closet, the husvand comes but your "shut down" phone raises an alarm!!!
Just cuz nokia did a mistake does not means it should be carried forward. Thank God this does not happens any more!

No, Nokia did it right. Android, iPhone etc. do it wrong. There are also lots of people who miss this feature with new smartphones. This was special for Nokia phones that you can totally turn off your phone but it still wakes you up - it wasnt a misstake at all. No battery consumption at nights.

My alarm does work in my Nokia x Android phone when its completely shut down.it turns on automatically at the time when alarm is set and ring ...
"not meant to be turned off" So what happens when you're in the woods with no chargers and need your battery life? Answer that, smart guy.
It's stupid as hell. I have a samsung S390G and the alarm turns on from a complete off. My smart butt stupid new lg doesn't.

An iPhone will turn itself on even if it has previously turned itself off due to low battery to fire the alarm off, and it will blast the alarm off as long as the battery allows it to—or if it is charged, as long as the event lasts. I think it is about half and hour, I really haven't counted the time.
I was expecting this the first day I was forced to switch to Android, I had insomnia that night and I did have to wake up early and ended up falling asleep for half an hour more, thankfully my inner worries were strong enough to wake up by myself, a little late though.

Got a weird problem with my AT&T stock non-rooted S4. About 4 or 5 times since I got it on release day when I charge my phone and I get the notification that it's fully charged the screen won't turn back off. I use a Belkin Conserve socket that is set to shut off after 3 hours and I've woken up after charging to find the phone dead. I've managed to catch this happen once and when the fully charged notification comes on the screen won't go to sleep, it just stays on and flickers a little bit. For all but one of these instances I had blocking mode on so I'm not disturbed by email or text notifications in the middle of the night. It did happen one time when I didn't have blocking mode on. I use a pin lock for my lockscreen and usually have BeyondPod playing overnight (only one hour long podcast while it's still charging) if that makes a difference. Is the function that enables the screen to stay on when you're looking at it malfunctioning? Any help? I've attached two screenshots of battery life when this happens.

So in settings under the Developer Options, there is a setting "Stay awake" if checked screen will never sleep while charging. Now I see that your Belkin shuts off the power but your phones still detects the usb plugged into a power source.
I think things happen in this order: you hookup your phone to charge and shut off your screen, phone charges to 100% and screen lights up saying fully charged, it stays on because of that setting, Belkin kills the power, it is still hooked up to USB so ... you get the rest.
I would find that setting and disable it.
if your next question is "I don't see developers option" it is hidden by default in android 4.2.2 so to make it available, go to Settings > About phone and tap tap tap Build number seven times. Return to the previous screen to find Developer options. Or Indiana Jones might pop up and give you the cup to get eternal life !!!
Thanks for the reply Commodore64 but I already checked that setting when it happened the first time and it's not checked.

I have this problem as well as my wife's S4. around 3am, I notice our room is bright with our two phones' screens on. It will stay on until the morning.
In the developer's section of the settings, the stay on when plugged in is NOT checked.
Also, on our phones, we notice the phones overheating because the screen is on for hours at a time at night.
I've just spent an hour looking through the internet, and while many report this, they are simply being dismissed by others as in having "checked" the setting in developer section.
Also, when the batttery does get fully charged, the "Battery if full, unplug the power" notification also rings the default notification ringtone. I've installed phoneweaver to set my phone to no sound overnight, but it only stops the sound, the screen still stays on and phone gets really hot.
This is turning out to be a huge problem for us.

Do you use a PIN (number) lock? I did but switched to the pattern unlock and it hasn't happened since. Also, I've been trying to charge only during the day or evening, not overnight. Maybe, since I charge during the day and I use it periodically while it charges it doesn't go into a "deep sleep" like it would if it charges while sleeping and the full charge notification would keep it awake. I don't know exactly why but it hasn't happened since. Hope this helps.

For whatever it's worth, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48871706#post48871706 - maybe that will be helpful.
I got the phone yesterday and during the initial set up, the phone got warm and dropped from 60% to 35% in less than an hour. Everything settled down but the battery was still draining quickly.
Last night, I charged the phone fully before going to bed and left it off the charger overnight. When I woke up 7 hours later, the battery had dropped to 78% which I think is completely uncalled for. Now for the past few hours, my battery is dropping faster than it should and my phone is getting warm just browsing Chrome or Facebook.
The other issues I am having are with sync. I got two emails overnight around 5am and just got the notification for them at 11am after I did a manual sync. I also haven't been able to get any Facebook notifications since I started using the app. I have the notification settings set correctly in the app and in the phone settings. The only thing I get is a Icon badge.
The apps I noticed that were sucking down a lot of power are the built in Amazon App and something called Access Cloud. I disabled the Amazon app but I can find the Access Cloud.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?
For notifications being delayed, go to Settings -> Advanced features -> Smart alert -> Off.
This feature waits for you to pick up your phone to notify you of notifications.... in my opinion should be off by default.
As for the battery I'm in the same boat, but it's only been two days so far and it's lasted me an entire day. Disable any tmobile bloat you don't use.
I had about the same amount of drain overnight as you. I had a horrible experience with the t-mobile app in the past where after disabling it I was seeing 15-20% more battery life throughout the day. But seeing as we can't disable this app out of the box, I downloaded an app called "Package Disabler" that allows you to disable pretty much anything you want. I disabled all these apps, let's see if it makes a difference today.

I already had Smart Alert off so I know that's not the issue.

I don't think smart alert waits for you to pick up the device to notify you.. I still get all my notifications right away. Smart alert just vibrates the phone as you pick it up to tell you that you have a missed notification. I could be wrong but that's how it worked on my s6 edge, why would it be any different now?

I ended up doing a factory reset being that the battery drain was so bad. I also can't deal with the delayed notifications and non existing Facebook notifications.
If this doesn't work I'll just exchange it for another. There's no reason why some people with the same phone are getting good battery life and others have to deal with piss poor battery life.
I'm in the same boat. Just woke up with the phone off the charger after being fully charged. 2 hours later the phone was down 2% with 100% cpu usage with the android system. Since browsing the Web for this issue, I'm down 10%. My s6 was way better on batter and only went down 1% since yesterday with no usage! How can I fix this ? I upgraded for better battery life

You're probably right, I just interpreted it as it would only notify you when you picked up the device, but then again I always disable it. Downloaded Package disabler as well after reading this thread, here's to disabling that pesky T-Mobile app! :good:
I bought my Zenfone 3 Zoom about 10 days ago and from the day I bought it, facebook app notifications have been behaving erratically.
First I wasn't getting any push notifications at all for a couple of days, so I went into notifications and basically reset all notification settings so that I would receive all notifications. No dice. After a couple of days suddenly I started receiving notifications late at night, around 1am.
I thought it was fixed, but then after 8am I noticed notifications had stopped again. That night, again, around 1am they started pushing again and continued through the night until 8am, then nothing the rest of the day. Then nothing for the next couple of days.
Now they push every night between 1am and 8am, but nothing the rest of the day. I haven't set any time schedule for notifications anywhere and I can't figure out how to fix it.
I have tried the app with a different facebook account and everything worked normally for the other account, went back to my account and this weird schedule again.
Any ideas?

It's that stupid auto-start manager app on the phone that's messing with you're notifications. First go into settings, then click power management and click auto-start manager, next under the downloaded tab of apps, find facebook and make it allowed on auto-start up, restart the phone and hood as new.
