Hi everyone
I've been searching for an answer to this for a long time now!
I need to do a hard reset to solve a niggling ActiveSynch problem (At least I hope it'll solve it!)
However when I did this before with the old XDA I I lost all my SMS messeges, both Received and Sent! Che pizza!!
As an incurable romantic I would hate for this to happen with my XDA II.
Is there anyone who can point me towards a method or a program that will securely backup and restore these precious utterances?
Sincerest thank in advance!
Conor
Sprite pocket backup allows backing up of email/sms to storage card.
Will it back up JUST the sms messages?
Thanks for that!
I've read the Sprite website and downloaded the trial version.
However, It's not too clear to me if the program will backup and then restore JUST the text messages.
I'm a bit out of my depth here but I'm guessing if I backup and then restore the entire XDA I'll lose whatever benefit the fresh hard reset might have given me as regards the underlying Activesych problem.
Can anyone confirm that Sprite can be used just for text messages alone? Everything else will resynch with outlook and my shared files etc. I can reinstall the other programs afresh. Just queasy about my vulnerable texts!
Best regards
You can do a partial restore of just messages.
Wait - Sprite Backup has problems with SMS
The current Sprite back-up CAN restore your SMS messages, but it kills SMS reception after a restore.
Your only option is to restore WITHOUT the SMS'es.
Sprite is working on a new version, don't rely on Sprite to back-up your SMS'es yet.
I am copying the content of the SMS'es from my girlfriend to a HPC Notes document. That way they get back-ed up to my PC automatically.

Michael
Do not miss this free software( SPStudio )...:
http://smartdev.51.net/
It can Backup all your SMS in any folder  ...
Do NOT buy Sprite Backup!!!!
Here I am again - almost 24 hours later - one whole day of my life gone - and I'm fairly sickened!!
I coughed up €30 or so for Sprite's Backup premium edition and - you know how long it takes - backing up restoring etc... - got through it in the end.
Everything looked good - SMS were restored. BUT my mid-afternoon had a strange feeling that something was wrong. NO SMS messages received all day!!!
Then I read Michael's advice which came too late for me!!! [Thanks all the same though Michael! ]
Sprite will take your money, allow you to do a nifty looking restore of everything including your SMS, BUT THEY TAKE AWAY YOUR ABILITY TO RECEIVE MESSAGES!!!
I am hopping mad!
There seems to be plans for a fix in a few week's time, and even a complicated interim workaround, but these are USELESS if the messages you are trying to save have already been trapped in a dodgy backup that neuters your SMS box!!!
Now I doubt I'll EVER restore those messages...
How can they be allowed to sell that junk? I will be insisting on my money back.
In the meantime, I don't suppose anyone knows how to salvage those messages from a knackered backup of my whole XDA II?
I know there are more important things in life than old text messages, but this is VERY annoying. Thanks for listening to this rant...
Thanks too to Alkandery75 but that program you suggest doesn't seem to work with Pocket PC, seems only for smartphones.
By the way, does anyone know why Microsoft doesn't integrate the Pocket PC SMS folder with Outlook? Seems like a glaringly obvious improvement to me!
Best regards to all
Conor
Sprite did work great for ppc 2002
Sprite really did Restore SMS with PPC 2002 but since 2003 you loose all further incomming SMS.
Solution to that is Cleanmail.exe from Spritesoft (which kills all your mail-folders ).
Sprite is working on that and has a pre-Release of Version 2.3 which you can get if you send them an email.
2.3 does restore SMS properly and you still can receive SMS. It has some other Bugs but i can live with them (as long as the final 2.3 comes out).
But i hope the final will be available soon 8) 8)

Fidl
Does anybody know by what mechanism there is a block on receiving sms after restore using Sprite?
Sprite Kills SMS - not just blocks them!
I should clarify that the Sprite Backup and Restore not only blocks incoming SMS but it actually finishes them off for good!
In other words, and I've verified this with another phone this, you will not get them all by later putting your SIM in another phone. And people who've sent messages to you DO get their usual instant notifications that you've received a message when in fact you haven't a clue!!
For anyone in business this could really create a poor show with clients.
Yes, it's been a bad day!
Thanks fellas!

Hello Conor,
I'm so sorry you face what I face long time back, and after a full week of researching, testing and HardResetting my XDA II, I found this nice free software (SPStudio). Also, I found that it is the only way for Safe Backup and Restore for SMS, as you said it has been designed originally for SmartPhones, but that does not mean it is not working for PPC WM2003 PE, it is working like charm, you have to give it a try  ... I'm sure you will never stop using it...
So Sprite is physically poking memory on the sim card and destroying the ability to use the sim for sms in any other phone too, man that sux. Is this only when you backup/restore just sms because if it does it when using full backup it means my sim is knackered too, has anybody found out if it is possible for the service provider to re-enable sms on the sim?
Too late. Just discovered my sim is bankaxed, cannot receive sms messages even though sender gets delivery report confirmed
Restoring SMS'es
Connor:
1. Make a fresh back-up, but don't overwrite the original
1. Restore your SMS'es using Sprite
2. Using Cut and Paste, copy the content to another application - i use HPC Notes Professional. This will create a back-up copy on your PC
3. Hard-reset and restore the backup minus SMS
You now have your working PPC back - and the text of the SMS'es saved. I use HPC Notes Proffesional to save those SMS'es from my girlfriend that I like to keep.
I actually like Sprite Backup, compared to x-Backup it is very fast and once the problem is fixed, it looks perfect. I have done a restore with Sprite from my SD card several times and it just works.
Sorry the warning came to late.
Regards
Michael
I wasnt too bothered about my old sms so I did as you said, hard reset, restore without sms option, now my sms messages are enabled again on my sim card.
SPStudio?

Hi again Alkandery75!
Thanks for that! I did try to install it but it didn't work. If it's working fine for you on an XDA II then I obviously didn't install it correctly. It seems complicated - CAB files etc. Out of my depth! Would you be able to spare a couple of minutes to post here the step-by-steps to get it installed and working?
Renewed thanks!

Can you tell me if you copy those SMS one by one with that program? Or will it actually copy the whole folder, dates, times etc.?
Cheers

HPC Notes Professional
No, this is a one-by-one cut and paste operation.
What I like by HPC Notes Professional is:
1. You have all notes in one database, not scattered in individual files.
2. It supports bullets, numbered lists, various fonts, colors etc
3. It can password protect individual notes as required
4. It syncronizes with the PC, offering you a very nice Windows GUI to view or edit notes. Edit in either end, and the other device will get the update immediately (if connected in the cradle/using USB)
5. They have a 30 day trial.

Yes! Yes! Yes! SmartPhone Studio is de BIZ!!!
Excellent! Thank you Alkandery75 for pointing me to it!
It's exactly what I was looking for! All I wanted was a simple safe SMS backup/restore utility. Could I possibly be the only one wanting this? Anyway SmartPhone Studio seems to be the cat's pyjamas.
It connects perfectly with XDA II. It makes backups [and claims to restore them too naturally, but after the last couple of days I think I can't face another hard re-set just to check it. And anyway all my old messages are finally let go - apart from a few classics that I just cut and pasted!! ;-) ]
SMS Cool! Is hardly worth paying for in my humble opinion because there's no backup and restore function. But this dude who created SmartPhone Studio should be paid. I can't believe it's free. Maybe Sprite should take him on!
Anyway my thanks to all who helped with this - especially Alkandery75. The whole sorry tale above might help a kindred soul somewhere. I have made a small contribution to this site in gratitude.
Best regards
Conor
Forumers,
I can't delete or move to archieve the sms at Inbox. I tried soft reset but it wont disappear. Tried to send it so it will go to Sent Items but still wont budge. The receipient of the undeleted sms receives nothing!
Please, help. It is annoying.
If you post to the forum, maybe you should articulate a bit more on what the problem truly is. What you wrote makes absolutely no sense (at least to me anyway).
Please describe the problem in a bit more detail.
This has almost no information:

Sorry for that ppc4,
I forgot to tell you that our country (Philippines) is a "Text Messaging Country" where most people communicate by Text instead of a call (Speak by phone). Text Messaging is technically called the "Short Messages" or SMS for brevity. While "Multimedia Messages" are called MMS for brevity.
Now here we go with the problem:
Text Messages (SMS for brevity) are automatically saved at the folder called Inbox of a Program called Messaging (with an envelpe logo). You can delete these SMS or saved them in the archieve folder. The problem is that i can not delete those SMS. I can't even move them to another folder which is, normally, not a problem.
We usually delete the SMS when it takes too much space in the memory or folder. In my case, i don't delete but move the SMS in the archieve folder for future reference.
Now, how can i delete them? Resgistry Tweak or something?
Please help.
PS. I hope these clears the doubts. If it does not, then i can't help it anymore.
hey emil:
I've experienced this before I think it happens when the messaging database is corrupted or something to that effect. Only happened once and I haven't been able to replicate it.
Try smsbackup v1.2 it's freeware and can backup messages to your storage card. then do the hard reset and fresh install. I know it's kinda brute force but I'm sure this will clear it up.
Thanks for the clarification on the problem.
I agree that the mail db's have become corrupt. Follow the suggestion of backing up all the sms messages but before you do a hard reset, try this little attached program first to clean up the mail databases. Sprite software originally wrote it to clean up a problem where the deleted items folder showed a count of messages but there was nothing there to even delete. It should take care of your problem without having to do a hard reset and reinstall. Just make sure you save all those messages first.
ppc4,
Thank you for this reply.
I will try tommorow and post the result for everyone to know.
More power man.
I've used it before. Be forewarned that any accounts that you have created on your ppc will be deleted. After the program is run, only the default email accounts will remain intact (ie. sms, mms, outlook). Any pop or exchange accounts that you created will go away and will have to be recreated.
It's a whole lot easier than doing a hard reset though!

Your warning was noted when cleaning. Thanks.
But the problem is when i tried to "restore" the Text Messages from "backup" through Sprite Backup, all Text Messages that were restored are corrupted (they can't be read anymore). Have you encounterred the same problem?
Your prompt reply is highly appreciated.
Haven't seen that problem but I don't keep sms messages. I know the mail db's on the ppc get messed up from time to time and I've learned to not really trust them when it comes to saving actual messgaes.
Did you try that smsbackup instead of Sprite to try and get the messages saved off somewhere? You may also want to try looking for a program that can read the databases on the ppc to see if they can parse the messages out again.
Basically as the title says.
There is an Outlook profile in my message, but I don't see anyway to remove it.
I don't use Outlook, I don't want it in there.
Anyone know of a way to hide/remove the outlook profile?
Removing Oyutlook..
Close messaging first .. properly..not just minimised.
In the registry.. navigate to :-
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\SVC
There is a key (folder) called "ActiveSync".. rename it to "zActiveSync"..
Now run messaging.. hey presto - it has gone....
Charlie Grillo
Perfect! I figured there was a registry edit to make, but didn't know what it would be.
Thanks a lot!
Woh! Not so perfect!
After I did this my phone completely stopped alerting me to text messages.
I had to change the key back to get it to alert me again.
Guess I'll just have to live with the outlook profile in messaging.

Perfect man!!! I didn't expect there was such an easy answer for GldRush98's question... It works exactly as I wanted to...
But the people here have a knack for surprising noobies like me... LOL!!!
THANKS A LOT!!!
Very strange...
Bro, I got a question though...
I `ve noticed that my device doesn`t play the notify tones after this tweak...
It took me many hard resets and restorings too find out this was the problem... But I still want to remove the outlook without stoping the notify sounds for the receiving of sms and e-mails... Any idea how to solve this???
Get DotFred's PIM Backup tool, backup everything but your email account. Do a hard reset, restore your PIM info, and reinstall the programs you use.

You did not do "hard" resets, or all of your customization and accounts would have been cleared. Hard Reset Sequence for a Wizard is described halfway down this page. If this is for your Touch, you're on the wrong boards.

My bad! I thought it would work for Elfin too... And it partially did...
What I meant by "hard resets" was that I had decided to format my device and restore all the configuration settings one by one to identify the problem. And I did... I was in the wrong thread... LOL!!!
Tks!
Hi, my JASJAM shows an unread SMS when there is no SMS there.
Not sure how to resolve.
I have the Windows Live WM6 cooked ROM installed, what info will i lose if i hard reset?
Any ideas on how to resolve?
Maybe the Message is in the SIM card, not in the phone...
Download and install SIM Message to browse your SIM card storage:

FixUnreadCount.exe
try this WM software "FixUnreadCount.exe" just made for this problem.
thanks
thank you a million. worked a treat . . . you made my morning.
I _think_ I've had this problem before, and I believe I solved it by using PIMbackup to backup my messages and then re-import them, chosing the option to clear down messages before impot.
thanks

Import messages from SIM to my phone
Hello,
I have an imate Jasjam. My SIM card has a few SMS messages that do not show up on my Jasjam. If I put the SIm in another phone, I can read those messages.
Any idea if there is a software that lets me copy text messages from SIm card to teh phone?
Jerry
fixunreadcount.exe didn't work for me either so here is what I did:
1) Backup using Sprite. Uncheck messages so they aren't included in the backup.
2) Hard reset the device
3) Restore using Sprite
4) Re-setup your email accounts
How to hard reset (from the wiki):
Hard Reset **NB** This cannot be performed while the device is connected/charging!**
* Press and hold both soft keys
* Using a stylus, press and hold the soft reset button at the bottom of the phone
* Keep all three buttons pressed until the keypad lights turn off and then flash
* Release the soft reset button while still pressing the soft keys
* Let go of the two soft keys once the message "This operation will delete all your personal data, to manufacturer default" appears on screen
* Finally, press the green call button to perform the hard reset, or press other key to cancel
will this work on an htc diamond? I have a pesky message that wont clear...
@willybean
I have a Sprint HTC Diamond and it's constantly showing me 1 unread email, even when there are none. I tried the FixUnreadCount.exe, did a soft reset and it didn't change a thing. It is an annoyance but I guess I can just ignore it. If you find/know of a fix tho.. love to hear it.
Thanks so very much
This worked great on my 8525. Copied the exe to the storage card, ran it and reset. Message cleared.

Thanks dude. Worked like a charm on my Tilt2.
If your sms is in threaded mode, you should read this, if not just ignore it:
"I have met this before, the fact is you have an unread sms in some thread , and this unread sms is relatively old. You need to find this sms in a lot of thread. Or you can switch to normal sms mode, in this way it will be easier to find the unread one."
Thanks to You!
This worked GREAT!
Thanks!
Worked perfectly on my Touch Pro running WM6.5 Energy rom.
It was drivin me nuts!
Worked great!! Thanks so much!!
same problem (fixed!)
hi, I'm new here. I've just bought my first PPC running WM 6.5 and I had the same problem, but this tiny program it's huge solving it! It took 3 seconds! Thank you!!!!
Thank You!

It was driving me insane too. This program saved me from throwing my phone against the wall as hard as I could.
Hi Guys,
My HTC Herald is giving me some application problems - running incredibly slow, applications not working, people calling me and I am unable to answer or see who is calling but hear it ringing and typing problems so I am considering doing a Hard Reset in hopes that it restores my HTC back.
I just have some questions regarding a Hard Reset if someone could please just answer it for me, I would kindly appreciate it.
I am aware a Hard Reset resets your phone back to manufacture status, so obviously you loose anything you add on the phone since. However does it erase Messages and Contacts?
I know how to back up my contacts using Outlook on my PC, but not sure how to do it to my messages and then if it does delete it, how do I put it back on my HTC?
Finally will Hard Reseting fix its bugs?
Thanks alot in advance!
Yes, it will erase everything on your device program memory. Well to back up your contacts, messages, appointments and tasks, use the PPCPimBackup.zip. unzip it and place it on the memory stick and then run file explorer and look it up. click on it and follow the instructions. Very easy. Remember to back up on your storagecard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When your done hard resetting, use this program again to restore your contacts etc...
Hardresetting will help you resolve your problems... I do a hardreset everytime I feel the phone gets a bit on the slow side.
